Governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, yesterday told Nigerians that the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, should not be taken seriously.
The governor stated that with the antecedent of Sheriff, he was bound to work for the All Progressives Congress (APC) to win elections. Sheriff had, at an event in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, stated that the PDP would defeat the governing party, APC, at the federal level in 2019.
Ganduje, who spoke to journalists in Abuja on the utterances of Sheriff, said: “About the utterances of the chairman of the PDP, I wouldn’t like to engage in crossfire, but what I would like to tell you is that it is the usual utterances of those who want to impress their followers; but I believe it is an empty threat.
“Looking at the antecedents; looking at the history of the chairman himself, I think he has been to many parties. He is always on the move, changing from one party to another. Even when he was in the defunct All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) for eight years, he was working for the PDP and even the APC started with him and then he went back to the PDP.
Also, the APC has told the PDP to stop dreaming of taking over power in 2019. APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie- Oyegun, stated this in Abuja, in response to Sheriff, that PDP would sack the APC at the federal level in 2019. Oyegun stated that it was another dream of PDP, which will fail just like the dream that PDP would rule Nigeria for 60 years.
Oyegun said: “The PDP believes in capturing power. We believe that service to the people will keep us in power and that is what we have started doing and we don’t have any date on it.
That is the important thing. We will not put a timeline on how much we are going to lead. “PDP is dreaming by saying that they would take over power in 2019. They had said they were going to rule for 60 years and it didn’t come to pass.
So, their present dream would not come to pass.” Also, APC National Secretary, Mai Mala Buni, in a statement issued in Abuja, said: “The APC is reluctant to join issues with Ali Modu Sheriff ’s idle 2019 postulations and would rather join issues that will bring about all-inclusive development in the country.”
He, however, stated that the APC, and indeed Nigerians, seriously hope the touted “master plan” includes how the PDP and its cronies would return public funds stolen under the PDP’s watch for 16 years. He said: “Nigerians are aware that the current economic hardship and institutional rot was caused by the PDP’s 16-year misrule and pillage.
“President Muhammadu Buhari has been working assiduously to correct the PDP’s years of damage and bring about people-centric governance. It is baffling how the PDP expects Nigerians to abandon APC’s smooth sailing ship for a sinking and rudderless PDP ship, come 2019. “The 2015 elections has been won and lost.
The priority of the present APC administration is to deliver on election promises made by the party to Nigerians who long-desired change of political leadership at the federal level and in many states.
“Happily, Nigerians can look back with relief and attest that since the APCled administration took over governance, Nigeria is back on the right track – economically and security- wise – and has taken its right of place among the comity of progressive nations.”
