There are indications that Goodluck Jonathan is meeting with militants in the Niger Delta region in a bid to put an end to the bombing of oil and gas pipelines.
This is coming following a statement on Friday, August 5, by a splinter group of the Niger Delta Avengers called “the Reformed Niger Delta Avengers” of the alleged sponsors of the militants.
The group had named Jonathan as one of its sponsors although the former president has come out to deny this claim.
TheGuardian however, reports that a group, Niger Delta Peace Agenda, which is based in Bayelsa state, confirmed that Jonathan was secretly meeting with militants, especially the Avengers, and cautioned all Niger Delta militants to listen to the former president and Ijaw leaders to give peace a chance in the region.
The group said that any “deceptive peace process would be rejected by the people”.
It would be noted that the list of alleged NDA sponsors by Cynthia Whyte, a spokesperson for the breakaway Reformed Niger Delta Avengers group, included:
Goodluck Jonathan, the former president (grand patron)
Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state
Governor Seriaki Dickson of Bayelsa state
Senator Godswill Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom state
Government Ekpemupolo (alias Tompolo), ex-militant turned contractor
Raymond Dokpesi, the founder of the African Independent Television
Kingsley Kuku, an ex special adviser to Jonathan on Niger Delta
