Adeyeye Olorunfemi, a 400 level student of the University of Lagos, UNILAG today got more than what he bargained for as he was reportedly beaten to pulp during today's convocation ceremony of graduating students of the institution.
An eyewitness, Omoyele Sowore, the Publisher of Sahara Report accounted that Olorunfemi was "tackled and roughly handled" as he advanced to protest his rustication during the convocation of his colleagues.
Sowore said in a post on his face page: "Folks: I was at the convocation of the University of Lagos today to witness the graduation ceremony of one our top citizen journalists."
"Towards the end of the gathering, a University of Lagos student activist, Olorunfemi Adeyeye, tried to protest his rustication by the University. He was immediately tackled and roughly handled, I protested the treatment meted to the young activist but was also tackled by a combined team of security agents."
"Our cameraman who tried recording the scene was viciously attacked by a police officer who dragged him and Femi Adeyeye on the floor all the way to the UNILAG Security Post."
"Shortly after we arrived to get him released, we were told that the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni had ordered them brought before him, bloodied, they were driven by a team of police vehicles to an unknown destination and we are yet to have any contact with them as I write this update."
"This is the second time in a week that the Nigeria police would attack my crew and I in Lagos."
In a similar post, Sowore posted again:
FLASH: Citizen reporter with @SaharaReporters @segun_olawoye arrested by @PoliceNG shortly after his graduation. Our cameraman and UNILAG student activist, Olorunfemi Adeyeye also detained. They were stripped, beaten and detained on the orders of the Police Commissioner of Lagos state, Fatai Owoseni
Another eyewitness, one Edafe Oghenebrume also giving his accoun of a facebook post below:
Before now, precisely in September last year the management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has trailed and arrested Adeyeye Olorunfemi; a vocal student recently victimized over Facebook post accusing the school management of incompetence.
Adeyeye’s arrest today follows his rustication over a critical article he posted to his Facebook wall about on the poor handling of management affairs in the institution under headship of its current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rahman Bello.
Mr. adeyeye was arrested by the campus security and taken to its " Alpha Base" a temporary detention centre operated by the UNILAG campus security unit.
Adeyeye was cornered and arrested alongside three others; Tomi Aina, Lateef Olawale, and another student only as "Olufela." Details later
