Employ your products, LASU Medical students and Alumni cry out

By Bode Ekerin

Students and Alumni of the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) have come out on social media to register their displeasure with the way the issues of housemanship placement popularly called housejob is been handled in LASUTH. LASUCOM which was established in 1999 uses LASUTH as it “clinical laboratory”.

Ideally in other medical schools in Nigeria, priorities are given to their graduating doctors while employing house officers. This has made it difficult for doctors who graduate from LASUCOM to get jobs in other medical schools. It was gathered that over 50% of graduated doctors in the 11th set who graduated in November haven’t gotten jobs and the college will be graduating the 12th set soon.

It was also gathered that the highest LASUTH has employed between 2014 and 2016 is 40% of the total number of the LASUCOM graduating doctors. LASUTH has 80 slots for house officers as approved by the medical and dental council of Nigeria (MDCN) but it was discovered that this has been underused as LASUTH only employ 50 house officers of which this number includes some who are supernumerary house officers.

It was also gathered that Lagos State Government has approved that the housemanship slot be increased to 120 and 60% of the slots be given to LASUCOM but all these have not been done making these doctors jobless.

The 12th set of LASUCOM who will be graduating in the next couple of months and 11th set of doctors pray the Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode to ensure that something is done concerning this pressing situation.
