Three men have made history by becoming the first trio to wed in a same-sex ceremony in Colombia.
Manuel Bermudez, Victor Hugo Prada and Alejandro Rodriguez tied the knot in a romantic ceremony on Saturday in the city of Medellin, in the north-western Colombian department of Antioquia.
Three people are legally allowed to marry each other in Colombia, where it is known as a ‘trieja’ – a word derived from two others: trio and pareja: trio and couple.
The trio became the first same-sex trio to tie the knot after spending years in love.
Newlywed Victor Hugo Parada said: ‘We wish to have an economical system based on the ‘trieja’ relationship that we already have.
‘This issue is not banned by international laws, neither by Colombian laws’.
He explained further that they decided to marry ‘for love but also for taking care of their common heritage’.
The relationship between the three men started four years ago and originally included a fourth man named Alex Esneider Zabala, who sadly died from stomach cancer in 2015.
The death of Alex caused several difficulties for the group as because they were not married, they had to fight the legal system to gain access to his pension and belongings.
The remaining three then decided to get married, so that there would be no problems in the future.
Manuel works as a social communicator, while Victor is an art student. Alejandro has a degree in physical education and the group say they work in perfect sync with each other.
Alejandro said: ‘We base our relationship on a coexistence and solidarity issue. Here we do not have powers, we do not have roles, we try to reach an agreement. We are all in the same condition.’
In Colombia, gay and lesbian couples have the right to adopt. It is not known if the trio are considering trying to become parents.
