Aisha, the 25-year-old bride of a Boko Haram commander, who was recently freed from the terrorists, has fled her home in Maiduguri to join up with the terrorists in Sambisa forest.

She is one of the 70 women and children who finished a nine-month deradicalisation programme in February. She also took along with her the son fathered by the terrorist, whose name is Mamman Nur.

“Before she left, she had received a phone call from a woman who was with her (in the programme),” her 22-year-old sister Binta Yerima said according to the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

“The woman said that she had returned to the Sambisa forest.”

Since leaving, phone calls to Aisha went unanswered, and her mobile has since been switched off.

Earlier this year, Aisha said women kidnapped by Boko Haram were given to her as “slaves” because she was married to a leading militant.

Reacting, Fatima Akilu, a psychologist and head of an anti-extremism group, the Neem Foundation, said Aisha isn't the only one who has gone back to Boko Haram. According to her some other women under her care went back to the terrorists.

She said some of the girls wanted to go back because they felt powerful there, adding that another reason could be the shame and trauma that comes from the society.
