Speaker, State of Osun House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Najeem Salaam has asked politicians to comport themselves on democratic tenets, saying it is high time politics of bitterness got replaced with ideological wavelength that would champion the cause of common good.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Goke Butika, Speaker Salaam asserted that this democracy nurtured by the sacrifice of winner of June 12, 1993 Presidential election, late Chief MkO Abiola and his slain wife, Kudirat and the struggle of thousands of others must not be messed up by hate speech and intertribal conflict, corruption and misgovernance.
He said: "We did not realize this democracy on a platter of gold, people of substance like MKO Abiola, his wife, Kudirat, Pa. Alfred Rewane, Comrade Ola Oni, Late Dr. Bala Usman dedicated their lives to the struggle, while hundreds of people led by late Gani Fawehinmi, late Beko Ransom Kuti, Wole Soyinka, Femi Falana, Femi Aborishade, Gen. Alani Akinrinade and others were made to suffer incarceration and forced exile in the cause of struggle to realize the de-annulment of the most credible and freest election in the history of Nigeria.
Speaker Salaam then said that the only way to compensate Nigerians who stood firm against the military rule was to guide and guard this hard earned democracy jealously and quickening the process of improving the lives of the masses.
He declares that, "the authentic democracy day is June 12, because of its iconic struggle to bring back the civil rule.
