I Grew Up With The Sound Of Music - Tolulase Oyemomi, A Gospel Musician, Instrumentalist

BY Adewale Emerald Owoola

Tolulase Oyemomi
INSTRUMENTALIST, GOSPEL MUSICIAN
AND STUDIO OWNER
After many years of playing good music and listening to others in his own studio producing Artistes, an Owu Prince and Prince of the Most High as he is called, Tolulase Oyemomi comes out with his own single, Psalm 124.

TOLULASE Oyemomi, a Debutante with the single track titled, ‘PSALM 124’ could be described as a young man of many parts and achiever per excellence.  A singer, instrumentalist, studio owner cum manager, music director, all in one; the need to make a note for the world through gospel song and as well as to satisfy his dream of praising God in a way and manner it would be acceptable to the general populace is what pushed him to release his single which is currently  being played on the airwaves.

The Abuja based Tolu who released his single few days ago revealed that music to him is what water is to life. Asides from playing at churches, he also makes melodious sounds for families and close relations at key occasions.
In a chat with him, he confessed that just like many other notable artistes out there, he too started from the cradle, by making sound with any object he could lay his hand upon as a child, so far it would made lyrical sounds! Here is an insight into his musical history.

“Writing music, singing and playing   instruments are just like my own passion. It is more than a hobby now. From the way things are going on, it is now becoming a business that can earn me an income”. Tolulase declared during the interview.

“From a tender age I love sound and could identify sounds,  and as a result was fascinated by whatever produces sound. My father who has also been into music from his teenage age, brought his music home through the instruments he bought for the house.  He had a keyboard and accordion and I grew up with the sound of music. And music has never been far from me. I learnt how to identify what key produces. This is not to forget that I made noises at home with any object that caught my fancies as I said earlier. From the cooking utensils to the dining chairs. Just name it.

“My favourite drums were our tables and stools. The plates and spoons became my percussions at home till I joined the choir in church and then began to groom my music professionally”. He retorted with happiness written all over his face.
Despite having a studio, the idea to come out with his own album never came up to him until recently. And the result is now ‘Psalm 124’

“By the Grace of God, I run a studio so I had access to recording songs. But I didn't think of coming out with an album. I preferred to be on the lead and not just because I wanted to, but because leadership ability is rooted in me.  This I have learnt to be a gift or talent from God.

“I was rehearsing on the keyboard one day and the (inspiration) tune came to me and God gave me words to fit into the tune and after a while I felt okay to record and I did. Here we are ’’ Tolulase said with seriousness as he tapped with the accordion besides his piano.

Many artistes of his age are turning into Afro pop  or secular music, but the need to make the necessary change in a troubled environment might have been one of the reasons for going into gospel music.

To this he said: “First of all, I grew up with parents that imbibed the words of God in me. I grew up also in a Godly environment. So you don’t expect me to look into the other way. I am at home with my kind of music. I am making positives change in peoples’   live through it. And this is a plus to our Nation, Nigeria and to my peers as a whole.

“The 'Gospel' is the message of Grace. What better thing/genre could I sing of? I have listened to a wide selection of music from almost every genre and I appreciate good music and instruments; but I realised even more that I find satisfaction in doing Gospel Music. In doing my Heavenly Father's will, hence the title, Psalm 124. The reflection is to show the whole world that God can, and he will, because he is able to do wonders irrespective of your need or environment. If not for God, what would have been our testimony?  That's why the title 'Psalm 124' was chosen” He stressed again in between playing Piano.

On a parting note, the soft spoken star who is basking in the euphora of making the needed impact releasing his  single, Tolulase as he is fondly called by his teeming admirers revealed the choice of the beat that accompanied the song.

“Yes it is cool, the music beat is good to dance and groove, but it's also good to enjoy soft, soul lifting and reflective songs that would make you appreciate how far God has brought us and all He has done for us”

Looking straight into his eyes, the Reporter asked, where do you hope to be in the next ten year with your musical talent?  He paused for some seconds and answered with a smile:

“By God's Grace, God would announce His work in my hands to all Nations. I expect to have affected lives across borders, from my local church to the world at large. I see God taking me beyond borders to share this and many other Great songs having touched lives and families”. He concluded as he went back to what he enjoys doing best; singing good music and playing instruments.
