The reason why President Muhammadu Buhari now perform his official duties from his house has been attributed to serious damage done to the office by rats while he was in the United Kingdom for medical leave.
According to New Telegraph, the presidency yesterday confirmed that President Muhammadu Buhari’s office has been seriously damaged by rodents. With this development, the President will have to operate from his official residence also situated within the precinct of the presidential villa for an undisclosed period to allow for full renovation.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, according to New Telegraph said that the President’s office was ravaged by rodents during his medical trip to London, United Kingdom (UK). Buhari travelled to London on May 7 after handing over power to his vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, through a letter to the leadership of the National Assembly.
He returned to the country on August 19 after spending 104 days there. The President, on Monday, transmitted a letter to the National Assembly informing the lawmakers that he was back and ready to resume duty.
The presidential spokesman told New Telegraph that: “Because of the period of his absence, rodents have caused a lot of damage to the furniture, electrical cables and the air conditioning units.”
Garba explained that it was impossible for the President to operate from the office in that condition and will also resume at the official office when renovations works have been completed. He, however, said the renovation would not affect the effectiveness of Buhari’s work since he has well equipped office at the official residence annex to the office.
“The President has been carrying out his duties from home since he resumed,” Garba noted. Investigations revealed that the renovation work was being carried out by construction giant, Julius Berger.
It is uncertain when or how long the renovation would last. At the residence, Buhari met with Osinbajo and the Governor of Nasarawa State, Tanko Al-Makura, at separate meetings on Monday.
The President also signed his resumption letter to the National Assembly from home.
