Below is the State issued by the authentic NANS President, Comrade Chinonso Obasi
NANS IS NON PARTISAN AND DISTANCES ITSELF FROM THE ACTIVITIES OF PAST LEADERS: CHINONSO OBASI
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) notes with dismay the purported 72 hour ultimatum issued to the Distinguished Senator Andy Uba to withdraw a statement said to have been made by him as it relates to political development in Anambra by a faceless and unknown group in the name of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) or face the wrath of Nigerian Students.
The Students Body wishes to use this opportunity to state categorically that the National Association of Nigerian Students is not a political association and does not dabble into partisan politics.
For the purposes of emphasis, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is the umbrella body of Nigerian Students and only advocates for the wellbeing and welfare of Nigerian Students and speaks only on issues of National concerns as it relates to and affects Students.
The canons and charter that established NANS is instructive and the requirements for recognition of membership of the National Association of Nigerian Students is studentship with a valid admission letter and ID Card. NANS as a responsible organization however holds its former leaders in high esteem and recognizes them as Stakeholders.
Accordingly, the only group of persons authorized to speak for the National Association of Nigerian Students is the prevailing Student Leadership led by the duly elected and recognized President. Anything short of this is null and void.
The attempt of the faceless group that has no locus to drag the Students body into political issues is not only an absurdity but outrightly not acceptable.
No doubt, NANS is a responsible organization and holds eminent Nigerians in high esteem; and so the attempt by the unknown group no matter the position they previously held in NANS to leverage the respected name and platform of NANS to rubbish the person and personality of the Distinguished Senator Andy Uba and in indeed any Nigerian of high repute is not acceptable.
NANS therefore calls on all former members and leaders of the Body to be responsible and desist from using the name of the organization for political purpose and also warns those who engage some members under the guise of NANS to desist forthwith or face the full wrath of the law.
NANS calls on past leaders to close ranks on issues that concern members and mobilize resources to support each other in times of need to sustain the bond and affinity that the organization is known for as opposed to the nonchalant attitude of past leaders as it affects the welfare and sustainability of our dear organization.
Comrade Chinonso Obasi
National President, NANS
