New UTME Cut-Off Points: Groups Faults Varsities For jettisoning JAMB's Directive

Mr. Yusuf Abubakar

'Education For All' has faulted the decision of Nigerian universities to drop the new cut of points of 120/100 approved for prospective candidates seeking for admission into state, private and federal institutions, asking Jamb and authorities to stem the situation before getting out of hand

A statement issued on behalf of the body by the protem secretary,Raji Nuhu decried the glaring defiance of some federal, state and private institutions to accept the cut off mark set out by the Unified body as the regulatory agency, saying this is a clear clase of policy somersault

Raji made particular references to the University of Lagos,Abuja and Kogi state university whose statement clearly stated that candidates for post ume screening to this institutions must be with a score  from 200,180,160 in contradiction to the Jamb and Education ministry's ratification

He warned the management of JAMB‎ not to allow universities to usurp it's statutory and constitutional roles of regulating university exams, stating that  the reversion of post-ume is a glaring show of lack of confidence in the body's conduct of qualifying university/polytechnic examinations

Comrade Raji cautioned the ministry of education not to ‎muddle up education policies, saying it scrapped the post ume last year from this institutions only to reverse it having succumb to pressures from VCs/Rectors/Provost to short change prospective candidates

Mallam Raji restated that the idea of reducing Jamb scores to tertiary institutions admission was a wise decision that will guarantee educationally disadvantaged  area to bridge the gap, but not a ploy for institutions to arrogate the right of admission of candidates, urging the regulatory body to direct institutions to return to statusquo of 120/100 cut off points

The body decried the glaring lack of policy direction on the part of Education ministry that often introduced policies without due consideration especially the recent controversy surrounding the  ‎Religious studies education by NERC and now JAMB

The group challenged the admission regulatory body to sanction any university that disregard the new cut of point across board as minimum requirements for admission into it's programs by rejecting the admission list sent to it for ratification, saying the tertiary institution authorities should not hold Nigerians and JAMB to ransom on policy directives

Nuhu Raji said the body will mobilise a joint protest of prospective jamb candidates of various institutions,Federal Ministry of Education and JAMB headquaters  to ensure compliance to the 120/100 new cut off points for admission into institutions in Nigeria
