The member of the House of Representatives representing Vandeikya/Konshisha Federal Constituency of Benue State, Rt. Hon. Mrs. Dorothy Mato said it is only strong democratic government that can represent the best interests and goals of its people irrespective of their religion, ethnicity or demographic factors.
In a statement issued through her Media Department on wednesday, January 24, 2018 she said Nigeria should continue strengthening its democracy and institute election reforms to hold free and fair elections in 2019 and beyond, and rely on its constitution and constitutional processes, especially during difficult times.
According to her, promoting and strengthening democratic institutions and the rule of law; encouraging long-term development and growth; assisting in the prevention and resolution of conflicts; and working closely together with all the states to address both old and new challenges are the basic recipe for strong democratic government. And Nigeria should strive to make strong democratic government possible.
"The former President of the United States, Barack Obama in 2009, challenged leaders all over the world saying that a government of the people and by the people sets a single standard for all who would hold power: You must maintain your power through consent, not coercion; you must respect the rights of minorities and participate with a spirit of tolerance and compromise; you must place the interests of your people and the legitimate workings of the political process above your party. Without these ingredients, elections alone do not make true democracy", she said.
