Oluwo of Iwo,HIM Oba (Dr.) Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, condemned slavery as another direction to combating corruptions in the traditional system to free Nigerians from poverty of mind. As a first class paramount ruler, Oluwo, on behalf of other ancient kings tendered unreserved apology to the past and existing victims of slave trading for crowns relative participation.
Oluwo regretted involvement of traditional institution in selling the blacks to slavery for minute gifts, displaying remorse on behalf of his colleagues for the costly mistakes and stigmatization incurred on victims till date.
He stated establishing and apologizing for a weakness is an acknowledgement of readiness to progression, saying his remorseness is to establish the damage incurred by slavery for us to move forward. He added It's time to tell our children about our roles during slavery of which innocent blacks were sold by the Africans for peanut.
The statement made available by the monarch`s press secretary, Mr. Alli Ibraheem, related the prosper of slavery to the ignorance of stakeholders majority of whom were kings. The release notes “I regret the involvement of traditional institution in slavery. Monarchs are one of the stakeholders that promoted slavery. We sold our children for a wall clock, tobacco, alcohol, guns, glass cup, wine, necklace, food plate, sweet and other unmerit peanut such that, today, many Africans are permanently loss to suffer the stigmatization and unfair treatment till date"
“I take the bull by the horn to apologize for the role kingship played in slave trading because of material life. Many black Americans are yet to recover from the wound of slavery. I`m apologizing to the accidental blacks in Cuba, Brazil, Caribeans, America and other part of the world. I want the victims to acknowledge our regret for the past and we move forward”
"White men never forced us to sell our children as slave. Our fathers voluntarily released their children on excitement for peanut. Then, there was no means of payment. Human were offered in exchange for glittering material gifts. Such ignorance shouldn't have survived without monarchs consent, who by then were the heads. We owe past and current an apology. I'm leading in tendering that"
It could be recalled that Oluwo has vowed repeatedly to arrest the corruption in traditional institution without disrespect to tradition just as president Muhammed Buhari is fighting corruption in the government cycle.
Just early this week, Buhari, on behalf of the federal government, apologized to the family and victims of MKO Abiola, the winner of the annulled 1993 presidential election.
Oluwo pointed admittance of past ills of the office is one of the qualities of a good father, praying for a collaborative synergy with major stakeholders to curtail the survival of modern slavery in Nigeria. He condemned the frequent reported cases of lives loss to seas in Libya, warning slave traders to be holistic in their engagement with intending travellers.
Oba Akanbi called for the cooperation of the blacks to decimate rampancy of slavery, tasking the federal government to enact strict penalty against whomever culpable.
