The House of Representatives member representing Badagry Federal Constituency of Lagos State, Rt. Hon. Babatunde Hunpe has tasked the Nigerian Customs Service and it's counterpart at the immigration, the NIS on synergy with other relevant security agencies to checkmate porosity and illegal migration in all land borders across the nation.
The lawmaker, according to a statement released by his media team-lead, Prince Sunday Oke, made the call at the House plenary session on Thursday 3 December, 2020, while moving a motion at on the need to address the porosity at the country's land borders to stem the rising security challenges in the nation.
Hunpe urged the Federal Government to constitute an ad-hoc Committee and organise a security summit that would involve all military and para-military agencies as well as indigenes of border communities.
The lawmaker said, such committee would be charged with the responsibility of finding lasting solutions to socioeconomic, multiple checking point, create public relations among the agency and border communities and security challenges posed by porosity of the country's borders.
He said the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari has done alot to improve the security lots of the nation; but , however, lamented that the country's international boundaries have not been adequately secured due to insufficient resources and manpower.
"This posed great implications on the economic, security and social development of the country."
"The porous nature of the borders have precipitated several crimes which pose serious threat to national security and causing hardship because it leads to illegal check points being mounted in and around border communities.
"The proliferation of arms, illegal immigration and smuggling of expired goods into the country are due to the porosity of Nigeria's borders.
"This has made it easy for terrorists to carry out their nefarious activities especially in border state like Lagos, Ogun, Sokoto, Katsina, Yobe, Taraba, Jigawa, Adamawa among others.
"The volatile situation of the country's borders have greatly hampered the efforts of the government towards ending insurgency as terrorists have continued to carry out their attacked unabated," he said.
The motion is to correct the aftermath indiscriminately chasing and searching contrabands, which have already passed through our borders to local markets and homes, this he said has usually been leading to indiscriminate shooting of innocent citizens at border communities.
The motion, which was seconded by Alhaji Sulaiman Samaila, a member representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency in the house and supported by the majority at the floor will also create good relationships between the border communities and government agencies if eventually made as a law.
