2023 Elections : Focus on your Ambition and Leave Government officials Alone - CSO Cautions PDP, Opposition

By Dansu Peter

Angered by the jittery and juvenile acts being used by the People's Democratic Party (PDP), the main opposition party as momentum builds towards the 2023 general elections, the Conference of Harmonised Civil Society Organisations in Nigeria (COHCSON) has cautioned the opposition to  stop throwing childish tantrums and face the task ahead of them.

The groups warning came on the heels of  calls by the APC Youth Movement , a non existent group created and funded  by the opposition to heat the polity.

In a joint media briefing on the 22nd of April, 2022 at the Charity House Abuja, by the Executive Director of COHCSON, Solomon Semaka, the CSO expressed sadness that the PDP has become obsessed with the All Progressive Congress (APC) and her appointees including those who have not even declared to contest next year's general elections by sponsoring protests and causing political tension and chaos in the country.

The group took a swipe at the sponsored  rally calling for  the resignation of

"Some PDP governors especially Nyesom Wike of  Rivers State has become obsessively involved in calling for the resignation of Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Ameachi, Chief Emiefele and Abubakar Malami without first of all resigning his position as Governor of Rivers State. If he has issues with Ameachi in particular, he should wait for him in Rivers and stop polluting our political space with  vain talks", the statement cautioned.

While accusing the PDP of being threatened by the best brains and super achievers who are likely  Nigerians favorite candidates, the CSO challenged the opposition to come to equity with clean hands by first of all asking all PDP governors and appointees to resign first before asking other people to resign if they truly care about due process and the rule of law

"All politicians in Nigeria are guided by the electoral act and the opposition can not start proselytizing when they are more guilty of the crimes they accuse others of commiting. The PDP should ask Wike, Tambuwal and Okowa who have abandoned their jobs to resign before contesting the Presidency and stop throwing childish tantrums", the CSO insisted.

The CSO frowned at the focus the PDP has placed on some purported candidates such as Mr.  Emefiele, Rt. Hon. Ameachi, Mr. Malami and several others who have not even declared their intention to contest, describing it as baseless fear that the All Progressives Congress may present outstanding personalities who will give them a run for their money. Stating further that the PDP should rather focus on producing a candidate that Nigerians will accept the way they have accepted   and are even urging APC members to contest.

"The PDP is scared of imminent defeat at the polls come 2023 and are shamelessly looking for who to blame for their failure to provide  credible alternatives by sponsoring street protests, media smear campaigns and embarking on character assassinations Instead of allowing Nigerians to decide who their next leaders will be. The PDP is mounting a campaign of calumny to discredit people who are likely to give them a run for their 16 years of stolen and squandered wealth".

The CSO equally challenged the opposition party to show any evidence that the person's they have been slandering have declared their intention to contest next year's general elections,  insisting that it is uncharitable to distract government appointees who are doing everything in their power to make Nigeria a better place for all.

"It is appalling that the PDP will resort to mudslinging in their desperate attempt to tarnish the image of people who have not indicated their intention to contest any election. Contrary to their speculations, it is indeed Nigerians who are calling on these distinguished  Nigerians  to contest so as to continue with the good work of Mr President.  Comments from the camp of the opposition are just a hoax with no evidence to back up", the statement added.

Nigerians, the CSO noted will never allow the doomsday when PDP will take back power. The carnage, corruption and embezzlement that Nigeria suffered under PDP can't be allowed to repeat itself. The PDP should remove the log in their eyes before attempting to remove the speck in the eyes of the APC and her possible candidates.

The PDP as a party should be ashamed of themselves and should show remorse for their actions before the APC came to rescue the country. They should not constitute themselves as a stumbling block to the progress of the country by trying to destroy every good thing that Nigeria has ever enjoyed", the statement added.
