The Director General, National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies NILDS, Professor Abubakar Olarenwaju Sulaiman said the routine and continuos training and retraining of federal lawmakers will remain the bane of a sane democratic environment in Nigeria.
Professor Sulaiman bare his mind during the closing ceremony of a dinner organised for the newly elected Senators, House of Representatives members and returning members at Transcorp on Thursday in Abuja.
He expressed worry at the current development were the 10th Senate will only contained 30@% of the returning members, while the new members takes 70% , stating that to mitigate and address the present gap in the next Assembly, routine and aggressive capacity building template will be adopted.
Professor Sulaiman maintained that the institute will be open for all categories of programs at all levels, asking the new and returning lawmakers to avail themselves of these opportunities.
He asserted that NILDS will not relent in it's efforts to continue to reorient the federal lawmakers through training and retraining in line with it's mandate.
Professor Sulaiman corroborated that the only ingredients for smooth operation of the activities of the Assembly, foster working relationship with the Executive and the judiciary in the administration of justice and running of government, will be constant reorientation and shaping of knowledge of the lawmakers.
The Director General said NILDS will not relent in this onerous assignment to ensure the dividends of democracy are deployed to constituents by the federal lawmakers.
"Very soon in August, we shall be meeting with the Senate committee Chairmen and their counterparts in the House of Representatives to fine tune on the activities of the National Assembly, with a view to guaranteeing optimum performance." Professor Sulaiman said.
