The Executive Secretary, Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), Sir James Iorpuu, on Tuesday, June 20th, 2023 represented the executive Governor of Benue State, His Excellency, Rev Fr Dr Hyacinth Iormem Alia at Ikyogen Refugees Camp, in Kwande LGA of Benue State, on the Occasion of World Refugees Day.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Mrs Beatrice Onoja, from Civil Society Network on Migration and Development, sensitized the Refugees on the plight of the Refugees and tempting areas such as human trafficking, child labour, arms dealings, illegal business etc.
Mrs Irene Donation Babu Head of Adikpo Office - UNHCR, in her separate speech, said, Today is the day the UNHCR from the office of Secretary General of the United Nation, reflect on the courage and the resilient of the Refugees, she said the UNHCR is commemorating Cameroonians refugees that today is a day for them humanitarians to reflect on the impact they have made to the refugees, challenging all who have not impacted positively to the lives of Refugees to take it as a task, she also advised the refugees on cross border activities, stating that there are mechanisms in place if they want to visit there place nor go back to their ancestral homes.
The Governor of Benue State, through his representative BSEMA ES, thanked the UNHCR and other partners for their constant support to the refugees, he appreciates the good people of Kwande for giving out their land for Refugees settlement, he further plead with the people that the governors absence at the occasion is due to other unavoidable engagements, the ES assured the refugees to always see Benue State as their home and enjoy the hospitality of Benue people.
During the presentation of items made by the Refugees from their skill acquisition programs, the ES commended them for making a judicious use of their stay at the camp, he promised to give them five shewing machine to encourage them and enable them to have access to multiple skills.
