The Ag. Chairman of the Benue State Internal Revenue Service, (BIRS), Mr. Emmanuel Agema, ACTI, has charged Management staff of the service to bring to bear innovative ideas that will help generate more revenue for the state.

The Chairman gave the charge during a meeting held on Wednesday, July 5th, 2023 with the Management staff that lasted several hours.

While congratulating some of the staff that were recently appointed into the Management team, the Chairman called on all the members to redouble their efforts so as to improve the revenue profile of the state.

He also solicited their support and cooperation to help achieve the mandate of generating optimum revenue for the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia.

Mr. Agema who expressed his displeasure at the presence of multiple security checkpoints on the highways in the state, noted that the security checkpoints often operates side by side with the notorious operators of illegal checkpoints who harass and extort traders and other road users.

To address the menace, the Chairman said in addition to the collaborative engagements with the security agencies in the state to effectively tackle this ugly trend, he has inaugurated a task force team under the supervision of the Director Enforcement with security agents attached to the team to sanitize the state of all illegal checkpoints, and arrest the perpetrators of such checkpoints.

While reacting to the briefs presented by the Heads of the various departments and units, the Chairman said he is determined to restore the service on the path of professionalism by ensuring adequate training and re-training of staff as regular as possible so as to keep abreast with the trends in taxation.

The Chairman further added that as someone from within the service, he is open to suggestions and contributions from the Management staff and other staff of the service to optimally actualize the mandate of generating revenue for the development of the state.

Responding on behalf of the Management staff, the Director Compliance and Monitoring, Mr. Adejo Abu pledged the support of the Management staff to the Ag. Chairman, and also made suggestions about untapped and under tapped areas that can be harnessed to boost the state revenue.
