The sustained fight against illegal checkpoint operators in the state by the Ag. Chairman of the Benue State Internal Revenue Service, (BIRS), Mr. Emmanuel Agema, ACTI, has recorded another achievement as 5 operators of the notorious illegal Federal Haulage in Otukpa have been arrested.
The recently inaugurated Task Force team by the Ag. Chairman, comprising staff of the service and the Nigerian Police Force, made the arrest yesterday, 14th July, 2023, during a special operation in line with the resolve of the Chairman to clear the highways in the state of all illegal checkpoints and also stamp out all forms of illegalities associated with revenue collection in Benue State.
It will be recalled that Mr. Agema during his visits to heads of the leading security agencies in the state to interface with them and seek their collaboration, stressed that road taxes are collectable by the state government as enshrined in the extant laws, and the law has no recognition for the operators of Federal Haulage, which he added is completely illegal.
The arrest of the five operators yesterday brings to a total of thirteen persons so far arrested. And shall be charged to court.
Meanwhile, the Task Force team in the late hours of yesterday and early hours of today dismantled and burned some illegal checkpoints found at Amaafu and in Katsina-Ala, while the operators took to their heels upon sighting the team.
