I have read some posts by some PDP and APC members who criticize the announcement of salary, pension and arrears payments in Benue State by the Benue State government.
I disagree with them on this. Ordinarily, salary, pension and arrears payments shouldn't be things that should be announced or even celebrated. But because of the nefarious, abysmal and amorphous governance of the former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom; it has been necessarily for these announcements to be made.
Ortom subjected civil servants in Benue State to perpetual sufferings and excruciating pains by his refusal to clear the backlogs of salaries, pensions and gratuities. He also refused to make payment of salaries regular.
During the gubernatorial campaign of the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, he promised to clear the backlogs of salaries, pensions and gratuities and also promised to make payment of salaries and pensions regular.
As a result of these, it is very important that once payment of salaries and pensions are made, they should be announced so that Benue people and those of other states will know that he is keeping to his promises.
Once the payment becomes regular and the Benue people are used to it, the payment announcement will not be necessary again.
So those criticizing the announcement of these payments are wrong, hence, I support it and encourage Fr. Alia to do even better by increasing the salaries of state government workers.
