The lawmaker representing Ado Okpokwu/ Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, Hon Philip Agbese, has described as "barbaric and worrisome'', the reported ongoing gang violence and cult killings in Ugbokolo, the host town of Benue State Polytechnic in Okpokwu Local Government Area.
Agbese expressed grave shock and sadness to learn through preliminary reports that not less than eight young men have been brutally butchered in the last six days as a result of fierce violence that broke out between two rival cult groups.
The Honourable Member, who also serves as the Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, lamented that these ongoing attacks also led to the wanton destruction of properties as houses of suspected cult members have been reportedly burnt down by rival groups.
He added that the serious manhunt and reprisal attacks have caused unnecessary tension and unrest in the community, with residents prevented from going about their daily duties.
Agbese, therefore, appealed to law enforcement agencies to quickly step up and rise to the occasion of restoring peace and order in the town.
He also charged operatives to launch a full investigation into the matter and those responsible should be apprehended and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to other cult members or intending members terrorizing the town.
The Enone Servant tasked patriotic members of the public and traditional rulers to collaborate with security agencies in safeguarding and weeding criminal elements out of their communities through intelligence gathering and sharing, adding that no town witnesses appreciable development and progress in the face of insecurity and public unrest.
On his part, Agbese promised to provide support and logistics for security personnel to achieve this purpose.
He, however, reiterated that his immediate focus is for his constituency to become the ICT hub of Benue State and one of the nation's foremost educational centers.
