Alia Placing The Collective Interest Of The People Of Benue Above Personal Interest

By Terfa Naswem

Martin Luther King Jr. (born Michael King Jr.; January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American Baptist minister, activist, and political philosopher who was one of the most prominent leaders in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968.

One of his messages was: "I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits."

The Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia shares the same social, political and economic ideologies of Martin Luther in his governance of Benue State.

Alia was moved by the plight of the people of Benue State to become governor so that he would bring hope to their despair. Upon winning his election and resuming work as governor, he has prioritized the collected interest of the people of Benue State over his personal interest.

The regular payments of salaries, pensions and gratuities including numerous infrastructural and agricultural development, and various empowerment programmes are indicators of his selfless service to the people of Benue State.

Just like Luther, Alia believes that Benue people everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits, and these are being felt by the people of Benue State through his people-oriented governance.

Gov. Alia has been in so many ideological, political and financial battles because of his selflessness to prioritize the collective interest of the people of Benue State. If he was a selfish governor with no empathy to the people, he would have had little or no battles to fight. Serving the people of Benue sincerely with commitment and determination to propagate spontaneous human-capital development and capital projects comes with various sacrifices and Alia has made such sacrifices and is still making them for the common good of Benue State since the welfare of the whole is the proper purpose of the state as established in Thomas Jefferson's philosophy of governance.
