Much Ado about Derby, Chadian Rebels And Boko Haram, By Evang Sunday Attah

Much Ado about Derby, Chadian Rebels And Boko Haram, By Evang Sunday Attah

By Evang Sunday Attah

Last week, Chadian soldiers,  angered by an offensive on their men by the terrorist Boko Haram group, launched an onslaught on the insurgents and almost totally annihilated the remnants of the Boko Haram from their territory.

This is good given the bestiality of the insurgents, their recidivism and enormity of terror on innocent citizens.

Since the Chadian expedition, the Nigerian social media space urged on by a particular online publication that had made it a duty not to see anything good about the Nigerian armed forces,  began to sing the praises of the Chadian troops to the extent of giving the impression that the Chadians have done what Nigerians have not done in the fight against insurgency.

This was also worsened  by comments credited to the Chadian president, Idris Derby, that gave the impression that Nigerian troops are not playing their part on the war effectively.

But a pertinent question to ask is, how did the neighbouring Chad come to have such a high population of the insurgents in the first place when it started in Nigeria?

For anybody that has followed reports of the war against insurgency in Nigeria, they are two simple reasons Chad surged with the influx of the insurgents.

One, the insurgents are renegades of the terrorists who fled Nigerian territories and crossed over to the Chadian side after been mauled by Nigerian troops in the renewed wave of operations since Lt. General Tukur Yusuf Buratai took over the command of the Nigerian army.

Since 2015, the insurgents have been wiped out and their bases destroyed and it became difficult for them to operate in Nigeria and many of them ran to countries that share borders with Nigeria including Chad.
The second reason in that due to the proximity of Chad to Nigeria and shared affinity with many communities in Nigeria, many Chadian citizens and rebels who had nothing to do had joined the ranks of the Boko Haram and found a safe haven to operate during the previous administration.
But with the renewed onslaught on the terrorists after the appointment of the current Chief of Army Staff, many of them decided to relocate to their country as they could no longer continue with the acts of banditry and for fear of being killed by Nigerian soldiers.
Nigerian troops in the last four years have done much more than the social media space is willing to admit in terms of defeating insurgency in the landscape.
For more than four years since the coming of the current administration, the terrorists have not found it easy operating on the Nigerian side the way they were used to.
Boko Haram terrorists under fire from Nigerian troops, run to take shelter in neighbouring African countries like Niger, Chad and Cameroun which they found less dangerous.
This has at several times frustrated the efforts of the Nigerian troops due to the diplomatic issues involved.
There was a time the insurgents came under intense fire from the Nigerian side that they had to blow up the bridge linking the communities on the border to make it impossible for Nigerian troops to cross over and continue the onslaught.
It would also interest people to know that the Nigerian government had in the past, tried to work out various arrangement for military cooperation with other African countries but these have  collapsed due to lack of trust and inadequate synergy for the joint effort.
At a point, the other countries quietly withdrew from the joint exercise leaving Nigerian troops to prosecute the war. But Nigeria was able to up the game and degraded the terrorists to the point where they could no longer launch attacks on Nigerian communities at will.
The fight became so successful that Nigeria no longer needed to wait for inspiration from other countries but trudged on till it began to win the respect of other nations.
In no time, Nigeria took back its leadership position in the fight and other nations began to watch keenly and copy from its strategy.
The success Nigeria recorded within the period, encouraged the other countries to begin to reconsider their positions on the war and began to once again mobilise troops for the fight.
It is within this period that Nigerian troops took the fight to the theatres of war and were able to penetrate the base of the insurgents at Sambisa Forest, took out a great number of them and destroyed their armoury and established a base at Camp Zero.
Nigerian soldiers also went after the insurgents and retook  military bases they had seized in towns like  Bama, Monguno and Gwoza.

Troops were also able to recapture territories captured by the terrorists which they severed from other parts of Nigeria and hoisted their flags.
The 14 local government that came under the authority of the insurgents were recaptured and liberated.
Internal security improved as many roads that were declared impassable due to the activities of insurgents were liberated and open for use.

The barricading of major roads by organizations and in worship centers in state capitals and other places was also reduced as people no longer fear conducting business within their premises.
Nigerian troops also put a stop to the  penetration of the hinterlands by terrorists  who were going as far as Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Kaduna and even to the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, with their bloody campaigns.
Currently, Nigerian troops have put the terrorists in disarray.
They have made it impossible for them launch any attack on communities as they constantly repel them whenever they attempt to do so by destroying their bases and sending them fleeing in all directions.
This was the case in Biu, Michika, Maiduguri Garkida and other places where the insurgents had attempted to launch attacks in recent times.
So while we should commend the Chadian troops for how well it has performed in its latest effort to rid the sub region of terrorists, the Nigerian troops should be commended for setting the pace.

It takes more than one onslaught for the war on terrorism to be brought to an end hence the recent attack by the Chadian troops only comes as complementary to the efforts of Nigerian soldiers.
Many of our soldiers have died in this fight.  Many are in various hospitals with various degrees of injury.
The least we could do to appreciate them is to commend them.
We should not extend the kind of cynicism Nigerians display whenever their national team is playing another country and seems to be losing to issues of security.
We should learn to stand by our  own to the very end.

Update On Olusola Oke, Ondo AD Gov. Candidate's Reported Arrest

Update On Olusola Oke, Ondo AD Gov. Candidate's Reported Arrest

Update On Olusola Oke, Ondo AD Gov. Candidate's Reported Arrest
The governorship candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Chief Olusola Oke, has denied being arrested, saying his rumoured arrest was devised by his detractors to score cheap political goals.

Oke accused the PDP of being the sponsor of the rumour, saying that the campaign of calumny peddled against him only made him more popular.

The governorship candidate who spoke through his media aide, Mr. Kolawole Olabisi, said he was not arrested at any time by any law enforcement agent, adding that he has since his formal declaration been moving round all parts of the state to solicit for support of the masses.

“As I talk to you now,Chief Olusola Oke is in Mahin in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State canvassing for the support of the people of the area in the forthcoming gubernatorial election.”

He said both the APC and the PDP in the state are intimidated by his rising popularity, hence their resolve to blackmail and other mischievous acts aimed at soiling his reputation.

“Oke is a responsible citizen of Nigeria and he has been moving round the state since he launched his campaign. He left Akure this morning for Ilaje Local Government and he had met with different people there.

“By the way, why would Oke be arrested when he did not commit any offence? He did not carry arms, neither did he carry ammunition. The rumour was the handiwork of his detractors whose aim was to soil the good reputation he has built over the years,” he added.

“The PDP resolved to peddle the rumour of Oke’s arrest and use the social media to circulate the rumour as a result of the court of the indefinite adjournment given by the Court of Appeal in Abuja.

The PDP led by Governor Olusegun Mimiko is afraid of Olusola Oke, especially with the court decision which did not favour them, hence the baseless rumour.”

Olabisi noted that the rumour was baseless and have no iota of truth, and therefore enjoined members of the public, especially residents of the state to discountenance it in its entirety.

“Oke is a free Nigerian and he will return to AKure to meet with his co- coordinator. This is to tell you that he was not arrested by any agency of government.”

Meanwhile, the Aketi Media Group of the Oluwarotimi Akeredolu Campaign Platform has commended the military for its professionalism and vigilance in the arrest of gunmen allegedly on the campaign trail of Oke.

The men were allegedly accosted by military men at a checkpoint in Okitipupa where pump action guns, machetes, and a digital camera were found on them. The men, who first claimed to be journalists but they had no means of identification.

They merely used the camera to disguise as journalists before the military men discovered the guns inside their vehicle. Director of Communications of the Akeredolu Campaign Platform, Mr Soji Alakuro, berated Oke for allegedly harbouring armed thugs to terrorise innocent citizens in order to precipitate violence before, during and after the election.

“Oke is a desperate politician seeking power at all costs by jumping from several political parties before berthing in AD to clinch the governorship ticket.

“It is baffling that after that political flirtation, he is not yet content with the civil manner of seeking power, but has gone ahead to recruit thugs to unleash violence on the citizens while seeking political power at all costs.

Ondo: Tinubu, Oke, AD Secret Power Sharing Deal LEAKED; See Details of Who Gets What
There were strong indications yesterday, that, ahead of the November 26 governorship poll in Ondo State, former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has sealed an alleged power sharing deal with the candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Chief Olusola Oke, Daily Sun report suggests

The APC National Leader, Senator Bola Tinubu, is said to be rooting for Chief Olusola Oke, the candidate of the AD, following the edging out of his preferred candidate in the party primary, Chief Segun Abraham.

Oke had, like Abraham, lost out in the same exercise but opted for the Action Alliance (AA) before he moved to the AD allegedly on the directive of Tinubu.

According to ThisDay Newspaper, Tinubu has sealed a power sharing deal with Oke. Among the terms of the deal is that for bankrolling Oke, the Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, would nominate the secretary to the state government.

Among other things, the power sharing deal involves the distribution of cabinet slots and other strategic positions if Oke wins. But there is a caveat: the APC leaders must mobilise enough resources and voters to first ensure the victory of the AD candidate.

Although details of the power sharing deal were still kept secret, a source close to the deal disclosed that Oke had agreed to concede some positions to the APC national leader and Aregbesola.

They include: Secretary to the State Government (SSG), chairmanship of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC), Commissioners for Finance, Works, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Health and headship of the Ondo State Board of Internal Revenue. Others include six caretaker committee chairmanship positions, that is, two per senatorial district as well as four special advisers.

The source said: “You know that the circumstances that led us to the AD are very peculiar. At first, we wanted Action Alliance but when the national leader suggested that we need to test the ground with AD in lieu of the zone’s interest ahead of 2016, we had no choice than accept the AD proposal.

“But what I just told you is not abnormal in politics especially when you view it from the prism of the need to cut down the APC candidate. I can assure you that the arrangement will work perfectly well and we will have no problem about that.”

Meanwhile, the leadership of the AD has approved a waiver to enable Oke fly the party’s flag in the election.

In a statement by its National Chairman, Chief Joseph Avazi, yesterday, the party said that it had rectified the waiver for Oke at its National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja.

He said: “After a careful and exiting deliberation during the NEC meeting which took place on the 17th day of November, 2016 at Afri Hotel Abuja, in bid to move the party forward, the NEC hereby adopts the following resolution as issued in this communiqué.”
He said that the AD NEC meeting was monitored by INEC officials, Mr. Ifaladu Saadu and Mrs. Bola Adewon.

The Grievous MISTAKE Tinubu Made, Why He Can't Be Yoruba Leader - Afenifere Chieftain, Pa Olaniwun Reveals 48 Hours To His Death

The Grievous MISTAKE Tinubu Made, Why He Can't Be Yoruba Leader - Afenifere Chieftain, Pa Olaniwun Reveals 48 Hours To His Death

Sir Olaniwun Ajayi, a chieftain of the Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, former Commissioner for Education in the defunct Western Region, a foremost lawyer has said the embattled national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu cannot be the face of Yoruba nation due to some grievous political mistake he has made in the past

Pa Olanihun who died on Friday, but 48 hours to his death revealed to Nigerian Tribune in a no hold barred interview why Tinubu cannot be the face of Yoruba Nation, among other burning issues of national interest

"I don’t see him as such. It’s a bit intricate, in the sense that if Tinubu had behaved in the way expected by Yoruba people, the politics of Nigeria wouldn’t be as it is now."

"What I mean is this. Alliance for Democracy (AD) came in and through the party, Tinubu became governor. However, when he was well seated comfortably as governor, he rubbished the leaders of the party and in any case, brought the AD into problem, until the party more or less, collapsed. Then, he was looking for alliances from various parties until they formed the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). From that, they jumped to APC."

"Tinubu was, more or less, promoting self-interest as opposed to the interest of the Yoruba people. If he had been consistent in promoting the interest of the Yoruba people, what is happening to him today would not happen because AD would have become a very formidable, strong political party. Of course, he was not alone. With the other governors elected in 1999, they all connived and brought AD to an end. So, that is it."

"But Tinubu could not say that he was not warned about allying with the Fulani. He was warned. Those who were, at that time, sounding notes of warning about Fulani coming into power."

On the perceived poor treatment meted on Tinubu in the APC, Pa Olahun said:

'Really and truly, Tinubu should not be rubbished because he, Buhari and others worked for the success of APC. So, for him to be sidelined and ignored in the affairs of government and administration is unfair."

"What ought to be done is that Tinubu should be treated decently because he was more or less the champion of the politicians who brought Buhari to power. He shouldn’t be ignored or maltreated or rubbished. That is not to say Tinubu is a holy man. He has his own weaknesses, no doubt about that. At the same time, he has worked for the party and should benefit from what goes on in the party. But for him to be neglected or relegated to the background, I think it is improper."

SHOCKER: INEC Defies Court Order As Jimoh Ibrahim, Olusola Oke Names MISSING On Final Guber Candidate List, See Full List
It appears the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has shunned the court order that asked it to recognize business mogul, Jimoh Ibrahim of the Senator Sheriff’s faction of the People’s Democratic Party as the authentic governorship candidate of the party ahead of the November governorship election.

On the list, Akin Enoch Zerubabel Olowookere and his 72-year old running mate, Yahaya Ipinloju was listed.

Similarly, the former legal adviser of PDP, Olusola Oke also lost out in the power tussle within the Alliance for Democracy (AD) as his name was missing in the list released by the electoral body. Oke who had last year pitched his tent with the All Progressives Congress (APC) came distance third in the governorship primary of the APC behind Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN and Tinubu’s loyalist, Dr Abraham, but had to abandon the progressives train again to pick the AD’s ticket.

Though the state executive of the AD allegedly gave him the ticket the national working committee of AD rejected him, hence his failure to make the eventual final list of governorship candidates.

The released list according to INEC is the final list of the candidates participating in the November 26 governorship election in Ondo State.

On the list, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) is seen as the flag-bearer for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Rotimi Akeredolu as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Conspicuously, the names of Jimoh Ibrahim and Olusola Oke were omitted from the final list released by the commission.

Ibrahim is the factional candidate of the PDP while Oke is the candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD)

It would be recalled that a Federal High Court had ordered INEC to recognize Ibrahim as the PDP candidate in the Ondo election.

Ibrahim had on Sunday accused an INEC official of demanding $1 million bribe from him before his name can be accepted

OLUSOLA OKE
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), on Friday, rejected the candidature of Chief Olusola Oke for the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo State.

The NEC, which held an emergency meeting in Akure, the state capital, condemned the withdrawal of the party’s candidate, Akin Olowookere, to pave the way for Oke’s candidature.

The meeting passed a vote of no confidence on the national chairman of the party, Chief Joseph Avazi; national secretary; Akin Fasogbon; national auditor, Ayodele Ismail and the West Zonal chairman, Chief Tayo Onayemi, for not following the due process before adopting Oke as the party’s candidate.

The NEC claimed that the national chairman and the three others unilaterally adopted Oke as the party’s candidate, contrary to the provision of the party’s constitution.

The committee said, “Oke’s adoption as a flag bearer on the platform of the AD is just known to Chief Avazi, the national chairman, in connivance with three others who constituted themselves as the NEC of the party.”

Speaking during the meeting, the Deputy National Chairman (North), Mallam Musa Loyi, alleged that the national chairman had not called NEC meeting since he was elected into the position in December 2015.

He also accused Avazi of denying the party the opportunity to take part in the just-concluded governorship election in Edo State by failing to endorse and submit to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the name of the candidate of the party, Ibrahim Garuba.

A communique issued at the end of the meeting, read by Ibrahim Abdullah and supported by all the 44 members in attendance, read: “This meeting condemns in its entirety, all actions of the four officers in the emergence of Chief Olusola Oke as the flagbearer of the party in Ondo State.

“The action in this case runs in total contradiction to the party’s constitution. They have no vested power to usurp the powers of the national executive of the party. Olusola Oke is hereby not adopted as the flagbearer of the party in the gubernatorial election of Ondo State, scheduled for November 26, 2016,

“The national chairman and the secretary must convene the NEC meeting in Abuja within 21 days with effect from 14 October, 2016.”

The meeting stated that failure to comply with its directive would lead to employing the constitution of the party in settling the impending crisis but said it was open to negotiation if the due process was fulfilled.

Reacting to the development, the media aide to Chief Oke, Rotimi Ogunleye, said there was no official reaction to all the allegations. He said the party’s executive in the state should be in the best position to react to the allegations.

Oke defected to AD after losing the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket to Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) in the September 3 primary of the party.
