Agatu Massacre: David Mark Attacked

Suspected daredevil Fulani herdsmen, yesterday, at Akwu- Agatu, shot at the convoy of former Senate President, Senator David Mark, during his visit to Agatu to assess the level of destruction in the area.
The former Senate President escaped unhurt along with other key officials in the convoy even as the suspected herders repeatedly fired at them. Senator Mark was in company of the former Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro; member House of Representatives for Ohimini/Otukpo, Hon. Ezekiel Adaji; security aides, newsmen and party supporters while embarking on the tour of the eight communities.
The communities affected include: Aila, Akwu, Okokolo, Adagbo, Akwu, Ugboju and Odugbeho which are completely destroyed by Fulani herdsmen. The convoy of the former senate president was approaching Akwu community when some fleeing herdsmen sighted it and shot at it leading to a stampede, which brought the convoy to a halt.
Security men on the convoy of Senator Mark were ordered to remain calm and refrain from exchange fire until the former minister ordered that the convoy should continue to move.
All the eight communities attacked by the herders were completely destroyed and deserted except Odugbeho which was again attacked last Thursday evening.
Speaking to few persons in each of the communities, Mark expressed shock at the level of destruction and assured that the incident would be the last, carried out by the herders. He urged the youths to remain calm and refrain from embarking on reprisal attacks since two wrongs do not make a right, stressing that the senate would soon embark on public hearing on the matter to find a lasting solution to it.
An angry youth leader in Aila, Michael, lamented the porous security in Agatu local government and angrily told the former senate president to tell the President to remove the soldiers, as ‘we are competent now to defend ourselves’. However, Senator Mark appealed to the youths to maintain peace and remain law abiding as he promised to convey what he had seen to the government for prompt action.
