Another PDP NASS Lawmaker Defects To APC

Another PDP NASS Lawmaker Defects To APC

Hon Emmanuel Ukoette
A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member of the House of Representatives from Akwa Ibom State, Hon Emmanuel Ukoette, on Wednesday, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a letter to the Speaker, Hon Yakubu Dogara, notifying the House of his defection, which was read at the plenary, the lawmaker said he was leaving the PDP because of “irreconcilable” differences in the party which has led to its factionalisation.

The PDP is currently broken into two factions led by National Chairman of the party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, and chairman of the party’s National Caretaker Committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

Ukoete, who represents Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency, said the other reason for his defection was “the string of legal battles”, trailing the leadership crisis in the PDP, which might end in “fiasco”.

Immediately the speaker finished reading the letter, APC members present at yesterday’s plenary swarm round Ukoete to welcome in into their fold, with chants of “APC, Change!”

As the APC members celebrated the new entrant into their caucus, the minority leader, Leo Ogor (PDP, Delta) raised a point of order.

While recognising Ogor, the Speaker, jocularly told the minority leader to specify which of the PDP faction, he belongs to before speaking.

Speaking on the defection of the former PDP member, Ogor said it was not true that the opposition party is factionalised.

Ogor said the defection of Ukoete would be challenged in court, so that the latter can go back for a fresh election and see if he could win an election on his new platform.

The minority leader added that “democracy is not about jumping ship”.

After the Ogor’s speech, shouts of “PDP, Power to the People!” by the opposition party legislators, rented the air.

Speaking on the defection, the majority leader, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila (APC, Lagos) admonished Ogor to accept the lose with equanimity.
“I understand the feeling of the minority leader. But I believe that he should accept the lose and more to come,” he said.

How Osinbajo Actually Emerged Vice President - Tinubu
The Daily Sun - The National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, yesterday explained how Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) emerged Vice President

According to him, Osinbajo was a product of religious balancing which became an issue in last year’s presidential election.

This is even as he said President Muhammadu Buhari may be slow, but he is steady, especially now that he is older and given his experience.

Tinubu spoke yesterday during the launch of a book; “Muhammadu Buhari: The Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria”, written by John Paden, a professor of International Studies. The event was held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja. He was one of the reviewers.

Tinubu noted that Paden succinctly explained the transition from the Buhari in uniform to one in civilian garb.

He notes that in terms of style of leadership, “Buhari, as a young military Head of State, was in a hurry. However, now that he is older and given his experience, he is ‘slow, but steady’ in his approach to governance.”

Tinubu noted that the choice of Osinbajo as Buhari’s running mate in the 2015 presidential election proved that the President was not intolerable to religious difference as it was insinuated.

“There was the issue of selecting a running mate and after a careful study and discussion, it was agreed that we should fill the religious balance ticket, given the sensitivity of the moment,” he said.

“Based on this conclusion, the name of a renowned professor, Yemi Osinbajo, the professor of Law and former Lagos State Attorney-General during my time as governor was proposed and accepted as running mate.

“Osinbajo was also a pastor in the largest church in the country, this is for those trying to paint Buhari as intolerant religious leader,” Tinubu said.

“During the campaign, he (Buhari) surprised many by his agility and the broad canvass on which he operated,” he said.

“In tracing the evolution of Buhari, the national leader said Paden’s assertion that military rule is based on the power its holders can wield, while civilian rule is based on the legitimacy derived from elections, is a point with which I dare not debate.

“Buhari’s career embodies this, hence, his transition from being a military ruler to being a civilian leader, who subjected himself to the rigours and uncertainty of elections four times. Thrice, he patiently went to court seeking redress from electoral manipulation.

The author, quite accurately, remarked on the Buhari victory equation, as flowing from Northern grassroots support and coalition-building with the South West as well as with other tendencies.”

In retrospect, the former Lagos State governor regretted the failed merger of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), his party, and the Congress for Progressives Change (CPC), Buhari’s party, saying: “In forming the ‘new’ party, we had three challenges.

“The first was learning the right lessons from the aborted attempt at political cooperation in 2011. Fortunately, both the ACN and CPC regretted our inability to conclude a pact in 2011.

“We agreed that there would be no recrimination over what did not happen before. We agreed there would be an intensified effort to forge the united effort that eluded us in 2011.

“In 2011, both parties wanted cooperation, but became stuck whether that should take the form of an alliance or outright merger. This difference gave rise to another one, regarding how the vice presidential candidate, who would run with the presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, would be selected.

“Despite numerous good-faiths demonstrated in attempts to resolve these issues, time ran out on finding a solution. In retrospect, we all were perhaps a bit too inflexible and did not realize the extent to which cooperation and flexibility were needed to establish the reform we all wanted.

“The result: each party went its own way in 2011. However, the talks of 2011 would foreshadow the discussions, beginning in 2013, which led to the successful merger forming the APC.”

Earlier, Tinubu and the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun met for the first time yesterday, eight days after the former wrote letter accusing the latter of carrying out a coup during the September 3, 2016 Ondo State governorship primary of the party. In fact, Tinubu urged Odigie-Oyegun to resign over alleged anti-party activities.

Both leaders sat side-by-side, while emissaries took turns in conferring with the APC national leader, perhaps appealing to him to take things easy as regards the recent happenings in the party.

Rather than use the occasion to settle their differences, the two leaders tactically avoided each other.

At the event, Odigie-Oyegun and Tinubu were invited to the podium for the presentation of the book. With Odigie-Oyegun on the far left, at least five persons separated him from Tinubu.

At the end of the presentation, the chairman walked past Tinubu before exchanging handshakes with other guests, including former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon.

Most Nigerians No Longer Fancy You, APC Chairman, Oyegun 'Knocks Buhari' In Admittance

Most Nigerians No Longer Fancy You, APC Chairman, Oyegun 'Knocks Buhari' In Admittance

All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and Buhari
National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has admitted that President Muhammadu Buhari is no longer popular like he was during the 2015 general election.

“All governments worldwide in between terms lose some degree of popularity; no question about that,” he told Punch.

“We are having harsh economic times, no question about that and that does not increase the popularity of any government. It only diminishes it to some extent. What is different is that, in our case, in spite of the harsh economic realities, the people still have full confidence, trust.

“I think that is the proper word, in President Buhari, that he will do his very best to improve their lot and I think the proof of that was the reaction to the threatened strikes by the labour unions. You can see that even though people are unhappy, they refused to come out because they understood.

“They are in pain but they understood why the pain was there and they trusted the President that he was doing everything within his power to ameliorate their pain. So yes, there is a lot of grumbling all over the place, but also there is a lot of trust in Mr. President”, he added.

On internal crisis in some states, including Kano, Bayelsa and Kogi, Oyegun said APC was attending to each of them.

“In every case, we are making progress. Bayelsa should be concluded in a matter of weeks. Kano is basically a personality thing and we’ve got everybody to sheathe their swords for now.

“And I think that has happened. Kano has cooled off. We also have issues in Kogi State which we are also attending to. That is the only way you know a government that is in power.

“If we were in opposition, there won’t be skirmishes in these states because there would be nothing to skirmish over but since we are in power, people are still struggling for relative importance within the system with an eye on tomorrow.

“These things are normal, they are expected but we’ve developed that habit of democratic consultation and reconciliation and it is working”, he added.

Why Buhari Won't Probe APC Members - SGF Opens Up
Engr. Babachir David Lawal, secretary to the government of the federation has revealed why members of the the All Progressives Congress (APC) will not be probed by the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

Speaking during an interview session with VANGUARD, Lawal said, “Let us be very sincere and reasonable. Obviously, to my mind, the preponderance of corrupt people would be in the PDP for one reason; they have been in government for 16 years and they were the only ones enjoying the booty, and they were doing it in a flagrant manner. Tracing my own (political) genealogy for instance, from ANPP to CPC and now APC, we were not getting anything.

“Nobody was giving us contracts. PDP were the ones in government; they were the ones the president was approving money for sharing; they were the ones that took government money to fund their election.

“This is the truth. APC had no access to government money to fund the president’s election. It got to a stage when PDP saw it clearly on the wall; you remember they even shifted the elections; it was so clear they were going to lose, and so they thought they could buy it.

“Throughout the last tenure of the Goodluck Jonathan campaign, their goodwill among Nigerians was on the decline and they were spending, and it got to a stage that they did not care about following the due process anymore because they thought they were in power and they thought they could buy their way through and remain in perpetuity.

“So, they became even careless about the manner they were taking the money. Remember Nigeria even borrowed $100million from the international market to fund the war on Boko Haram and they simply shared it. APC did not go to borrow anywhere. We were not sharing oil wells. We had no access to NNPC funds. So, if these agencies were converted into agencies for looting and pilfering, it is obvious that even if we had corrupt men in the APC, they did not have the opportunity to steal, and that is assuming we had. I cannot, in all honesty, say that all of us in APC are saints, but the truth is, we did not have access to funds to steal in the first place, and so we did not have opportunity also to reject the stealing. So, let them roast in their stew. Let them carry their cross.

“They can make all the noises and try to deflate APC, but our hands are clean by providence. Look, let us face it. If they arrest you, why don’t you say, ‘I shared the money with so and so persons’ and then let him turn out to be in APC?

“Those that they are arresting, it is from the interrogation that the information burst out. Let them leave us alone. This is just the beginning. They will return our money by the time we finish digging their soak-aways and bringing down their (overhead) tanks; we would recover our money."

SENATE FORGERY SCANDAL: TENSION In Aso Rock; Oyegun, Saraki In Secret Meeting

SENATE FORGERY SCANDAL: TENSION In Aso Rock; Oyegun, Saraki In Secret Meeting

SARAKI AND OYEGUN
Report according to SignalNG suggests that serious tension has gripped the Aso Rock presidential seat of power over a threat by senators of Nigeria’s leading opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to withdraw support from the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Our source revealed that frantic efforts were being made by President Muhammadu Buhari through proxies to assess the extent to which the threat by the PDP senators may affect his government and to consider the possibility of lobbying the leadership of the Senate to broker a truce.

“I can authoritatively tell you that there is palpable tension in Aso Rock right now over the threat by PDP senators to withdraw support from President Buhari’s government. Because, what this means is that if the PDP senators make good their threat and withdraw their support, it practically becomes impossible for President Buhari to get any confirmation of key appointments like that of the new IGP, the EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu and of course, there will be no screening of ambassadors. I think the Presidency just realized the reality they have to grapple with and now they are running helter skelter. It’s a dicey situation for the Presidency”, one of the sources who did not want to be named, told SIGNAL.

Meanwhile, according to an informed source, President Buhari has already reached out to the leadership of his party, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to assist with a solution out of the festering crisis with the PDP senators. Lending credence to this development, APC National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun was sighted at the Abuja residence of Senate President, Bukola Saraki on Wednesday. Oyegun has come under fire within the APC for reportedly endorsing the CCT trial of Saraki, further fueling concerns that the Senate President’s trial is politically motivated through the connivance of the APC leadership and President Buhari’s government.

A cold war between the Nigerian Senate and Presidency has been brewing for months, with the Saraki trial, marking a watershed in a battle royale that has seen the Executive and Legislative arms of government at loggerheads over several issues of national interest including the 2016 budget and some key political appointments.

Recently, the testy relationship between the Senate and Presidency has deepened with President Buhari’s focus on members of the opposition PDP, many of who are allegedly being hounded by anti-graft agencies for criticizing the government of President Buhari. The opposition PDP has accused the Buhari government of masking its persecution of the PDP with the war against corruption.

Senators of the PDP on Tuesday formally resolved to totally withdraw their support for the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government.

The Senators said it was time to end their one-year romance with the government, noting that the APC led government actions toward their party members so far, since taking over the central government were enough agonies to withdraw their support.

The resolution was taken following the court summons on the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, along with the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, over alleged forgery of the Senate Standing Rules.

At the time of filing this report, the details of a possible truce between Buhari and the Senate were still sketchy. But inside sources familiar with the details told SIGNAL on Friday, there would be no going back in what may well become a messy showdown between the Executive and Legislature should the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami SAN proceed to arraign Saraki and Ekweremadu next week.

PDP Crisis: Atiku, Northern Cabals FINGERED, You'll Be Shocked At This Revelations

PDP Crisis: Atiku FINGERED, You'll Be Shocked At This Revelations
The current crisis bedevilling the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has been narrowed down to tussle of who picks the party's presidential ticket in 2019 as the ambition of some notable Northern politicians including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is at the root of the leadership tussle confronting the erstwhile ruling party, the Saturday Sun Newspaper has revealed.

The findings, which is contrary to claims by the Senator Ahmed Makarfi caretaker committee that the ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC) was instigating the leadership tussle in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the root of the leadership tussle confronting the erstwhile ruling party.

Former Minister of State Works and spokesperson of the Ahmed Makarfi team, Dayo Adeyeye, addressing newsmen on Tuesday had alleged that the APC-led Federal Government was using the former Borno State governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff to destabilise the main opposition party ahead of Edo State governorship election and the 2019 general elections.

But it was gathered that political gladiators smarting to pick the PDP’s 2019 presidential ticket, have lined behind the factional chairmen and are now pulling the strings.

Ahead of his speculated return to the party, former Vice President and APC chieftain, Atiku Abubakar is believed to be giving moral and financial support to the Ahmed Makarfi committee, a creation of the party’s highest organ, the national convention.

But Atiku has denied involvement in the PDP crisis. Speaking through his media aide, Paul Ibe, the former Vice President said he remains a national leader of the ruling APC and was in no way involved in the leadership tussle rocking his former party.

He said: “It is ludicrous. The Turaki remains a member of APC and he is fully committed to the party and working with other stakeholders to deliver its programmes to the people.

“What has changed to generate an interest? He has no interest in foisting any leadership on PDP. He remains a bonafide national leader of APC. So, it is wrong for anyone to link him with PDP crisis.”

Saturday Sun also gathered that the two PDP governors in the Northeast, Gombe State governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo and Taraba State, Darius Ishaku are also backing the embattled former Borno State governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff whose national working committee was dissolved at the Port Harcourt convention.

While the motive of Governor Darius Ishaku for supporting Senator Ali Modu Sheriff is yet to be known, Gombe state governor is believed to be eyeing the party’s presidential ticket for the 2019 general elections.

The Makarfi committee was mandated at the Convention held in Port Harcourt to administer the party for three months and conduct a convention that will produce substantive national officers for the party.

A Saturday Sun source revealed that the two known contenders are positioning themselves ahead of the national convention, to enable them plant their loyalists in the new national working committee that would emerge and ultimately conduct the presidential convention that would produce the party’s presidential flagbearer.

Checks by our source revealed that the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) had upheld the report of the Senator Ike Ekweremadu Post- Election Review Committee which recommended the zoning of the party’s 2019 presidential ticket to the North. Honourable Inua Bwala, media aide to Senator Ali Modu Sheriff could not be reached for comments as his line was switched off, as at the time of filing this report Friday evening.

PDP Crisis: 2 The Secret Powerful Forces Behind Sheriff REVEALED

PDP Crisis: 2 The Secret Powerful Forces Behind Sheriff REVEALED

PDP Crisis: 2 The Secret Powerful Forces Behind Sheriff REVEALED
The All Progressives Congress, APC and the Presidency have been identified as the secret powerful forces behind Senator Ali Modu Sheriff faction of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, who are head bent and has vowed to  clinch to the leadership of the party till 2018, despite his acclaimed ouster at the Port Harcourt Convention.

The Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the party made alleged that the Presidency and the APC are stoking the leadership crisis.

But the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday denied having anything to do with the leadership crisis rocking the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Reacting to the allegation, the APC said the PDP is suffering from the sins of the past.

The National Secretary of APC,  Mai Mala Buni, in a statement said: “For the umpteenth time, the APC wishes to state that instead of joining issues with the baseless and laughable allegations, the APC would rather join issues that will bring about-all-inclusive development in the country.

“However, it should be put on record that the PDP foisted on them whatever crisis it is troubled with today due to its politics of imposition and other undemocratic practices which the APC abhors.

“The PDP should put its house in order rather than playing to the gallery and blaming others but themselves for their sins which have come to hunt them. Also, it is evident that the PDP has chosen to employ diversionary tactics because of its inability to produce credible candidates for the forthcoming elections in Edo and Ondo states”.

The caretaker committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of hiring “ousted” PDP Chairman Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff to destroy the PDP.

Sheriff was removed as party chairman at the May 21 botched national convention in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, where a caretaker committee was told to take charge of the party’s affairs.
But Sheriff on Monday stormed the party’s Abuja headquarters to take charge of its activities. He declared the caretaker committee as an “illegal” body and vowed to continue as chairman till December 2018.

At a media briefing yesterday, held at a private residence, spokesman of the  caretaker committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said the aim of the APC was to scuttle the chances of the PDP in the upcoming governorship election in Edo State.

Said he: “The All Progressive Congress (APC) has contracted Sheriff and his cohorts to scuttle the chances of the PDP in the Edo governorship election.

“We have credible intelligence that Sheriff had a meeting on Sunday night with an APC governor from the Northwest, where it was agreed that he would be given full security and financial support to exacerbate the crisis in the PDP with the objective of preventing the PDP from presenting a candidate for the Edo governorship election, or in the very least, to prevent the PDP from offering a serious challenge to APC whose electoral fortunes have continued to nose-dive.

“What we are however very certain about is that Sheriff and his fellow renegades are being used by the enemies of the PDP to destroy our party and to prevent it from reorganising itself so as to provide a credible opposition and alternative platform for the forthcoming Edo State gubernatorial election and the 2019 general elections.”

Adeyeye also faulted the police for allowing Sheriff and his group access to the secretariat, saying the police could hardly justify the action.

“While we are still trying to understand the role of the police in the entire saga, it is curious that the police made no arrest of the thugs who openly brandished various dangerous weapons in and around the premises of the secretariat in full glare of the police.

“It is also curious that the police claimed to be acting on ‘orders from above’ in allowing Sheriff and his cohorts to gain entry into the secretariat. If we may ask, who is the authority that issued the ‘orders from above’?, he queried.

The committee spokesman dismissed the court orders on the strength of which Sheriff took control of the party’s secretariat, saying they were non existent.

According to him, the court order restraining Sheriff from parading himself as chairman is still subsisting until the determination of the motion on notice, which he said would come up for hearing on Thursday (tomorrow).

Adeyeye continued: “The motion on notice will come up for hearing on Thursday. Only three of the members of the defunct national officers are still parading themselves but constitutionally they cannot form a quorum for any legitimate business of the party.”

Adeyeye recalled that Sheriff was not elected but appointed by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the PDP to complete the tenure of erstwhile chairman Adamu Mu’azu, which terminated on February 14.

He pointed out that Sheriff was given an extension of three months by the NEC to organise a national convention but that his appointment was not ratified at the Port Harcourt convention.

Adeyeye said: “So, constitutionally, he has no other mandate which can extend beyond May 21, 2016. The national convention is the supreme organ of the party under Article 33 (02) of the PDP constitution.

“In the exercise of its power under Article 33(5)(b) & (e) of the constitution, the national convention removed all officers of the party and set up a caretaker committee to plan and organize a national convention within 90 days.

“The national convention of the PDP can only be called by NEC and once that is done, it is only the national convention that can cancel or postpone its proceedings.

“No individual or other organ of the party can postpone or cancel the national convention. The national convention, therefore, took place legally and constitutionally.”

The spokesman said the committee would not be distracted by the activities of fifth columnists in the party.

APC Leaders Move Against Gov. Bello As He Appoints 13 PDP members, 3 APC As Commissioners

APC Leaders Move Against Gov. Bello As He Appoints 13 PDP members, 3 APC As Commissioners

Yahaya Bello
Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, may have more huddles to cross after his victory at the Governorship Election Tribunal that upheld his election.

Members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the National Assembly from the state, House of Assembly members, executives of the party in the state and prominent party leaders from the state, held a crucial meeting in Abuja on Monday, accusing the governor of engaging in anti-party activities.

The meeting after deliberating for over three hours, set-up an 11 member Disciplinary Committee headed by Senator Dino Melaye, to look at various allegations leveled against the governor, and report back within seven days.

The APC elected officers and party executive also accused the governor, among other things, of appointing card-carrying members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state as commissioners, special advisers, and councils’ caretaker committee members.

The meeting, which was attended by the APC Chairman in the state, Alhaji Haddy Ametuo, in its resolution that was read to journalists by Melaye after the meeting, said Governor Bello allegedly made all the appointments without carrying the party along.

They Kogi APC leaders alleged that “Out of the 15 Commissioners he (Bello) appointed, PDP has 13 card-carrying members while APC has two. Out of the 105 members of the Caretaker Committee members for the 21 Local Government Councils, PDP has 72 while APC has 33.

“Out of the 28 people he appointed as Special Advisers and Senior Special Assistants, PDP has 24, APC has one, APGA has one, Labour has one, Accord has one.”

According to the party leaders, its action is based on Article 12 (8) of the APC constitution and it has agreed to set up the committee made up of members from the three senatorial districts of the state to invite the governor for necessary questioning.

They also said their action became necessary after the Governor rebuffed all attempts to hold a meeting with the State Working Committee of the party since he was sworn-in as governor,
threatening to invoke all necessary disciplinary actions against the governor in accordance with the party constitution, in case he chooses to disregard the party resolution.

The resolution reads in part: “After much deliberations, the House noted that Governor Yahaya Bello, has substantially, breached the provision of Article 21of the constitution of the APC.

“The House, therefore resolved to constitute a disciplinary committee of 1 members to invite Governor Yahaya Bello and give him the desired fair hearing”

“Members of the disciplinary committees are, Senator Dino Melaye ( Chairman), Hon. S.T.Adejoh (Secretary), Senator Mohammed Ohiare, Senator Abubakar Abdulrahman, Senator Nicholas Ugbane, and Alhaji Haddy Ametuo, the APC Chairman in Kogi State.

“Others are, Hon.Buba Jibril, Hajia Hajara Aliyu, Hon. Folasade Joseph, and Hon. Suleiman Ali”, the resolution stated.

Ambassadorial Designates: How buhari Shunned APC Leaders Nominees, Appoints Career Civil Servants Only
The Authority - President Muhammadu Buhari has dumped the political class in the list of ambassador-designates he sent to the Senate on Thursday for confirmation.

In the all-career Foreign Service officers’ list, 11 women were in the 47 names the President plans to appoint as Ambassadors or High Commissioners, depending on the countries of their assignment.

This is the first time in recent years that any Nigerian leader will appoint only career diplomats as the country’s envoys.

Buhari’s action may not go down well with politicians, especially from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), who have been lobbying for ambassadorial positions.

The move will however open up the space in the foreign service for the elevation of other officers to the positions being vacated by the nominees.

Last night, Foreign Service analysts described the President’s action as a major compensation for the diplomats and a big boost for the Service.
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, who disclosed the President’s list on Thursday, said Buhari wants the Upper House to clear the nominees promptly.

Buhari had on July 9, 2015 recalled Nigerian ambassadors on the Foreign Missions and since then the nation’s embassies have been operating without Ambassadors or High Commissioners.

Saraki, who read the letter dated June 6, 2016, explained that President Buhari had requested the Senate to approve the list of the nominees at the shortest possible time.

The letter read in part: “In accordance with Section 171(1) (C) sub-section 4 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), I have the honour to forward the attached list of 47 career foreign service officers as ambassadors-designate for consideration and confirmation by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The nominees are: Obinna Chukwuemeka Agbugba, Salisu Umaru, Inyang Udoh-Inyang, Okeke Vivian Nwunaku, Liman Munir, Ndem Jane Ada, Mohammed Hassan Hassan, Martin Nyong Cobham, Janet Omoleegho Olisa, Itegboje Sunday, Olatunde Adesesan and Lilian Ijeukwu Onoh.

RESTRUCTURING Nigeria: Presidency, APC Shuns Atiku, Afenifere's Call

RESTRUCTURING Nigeria: Presidency, APC Shuns Atiku, Afenifere's Call

The Presidency and the ruling All progressives Congress, APC have shunned the idea to restructuring Nigeria despite calls from well-meaning Nigerians, the latest from the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, as a means to tackle the ongoing challenges, Punch Newspaper reports on Sunday.

The APC Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun reportedly said restructuring the nation not a priority of the party at this trying time, rather, the administration is currently focused on rebuilding the economy, creating jobs and ensuring the security of lives and property, he said to Punch Newspaper.

Also, the Presidency through the spokesman of President Muhammadu Buhari, Mr. Femi Adesina on Saturday, in an interview with Punch Newspaper buttressed the party's stance saying it was on the same page with the Party.

Odigie-Oyegun noted that there were several challenges the administration was currently grappling with.

He said, “To bring this additional issue (restructuring) – is not the wisest thing for a nation that is struggling to stabilise to go into an unnecessary diversion at this point.

“Nothing is wrong with the idea but at this time, it is best for us to concentrate on our priorities. As a party, our priority right now is to rebuild the economy, create jobs and deal with the security problems at hand.

“And with what is happening in the Niger Delta you can see that there is so much to do. We must get our priority right some day we will come to that.”

He pleaded with Nigerians not to lose hope because the current challenges were temporary while appealing to them to continue to give unwavering support  for the Buhari-led administration to enable it to deliver on its mandate.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar had, on Tuesday, advocated the restructuring of the country to ensure the development and growth of the federating units.

“Agitations by many right-thinking Nigerians call for a restructuring and a renewal of our federation to make it less centralised, less suffocating and less dictatorial in the affairs of our country’s constituent units and localities,” the former vice-president had said at a book presentation, “We are all Biafrans”, in Abuja.

Eminent Nigerians such as a former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, and an ex-Chairman of the Nigerian chapter of Transparency International, Maj. Gen. Ishola Williams (retd.), as well as groups such as Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, and the pan-Igbo umbrella body, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, had also supported Atiku’s call.

When asked about the Presidency’s position on the calls, Adesina referred our correspondent to the ruling party’s roadmap for the country.

He said, “The governing party, the APC, has a position on restructuring in its roadmap for the country. Please consult the document.”

Our correspondent’s online check of the party’s document titled “Roadmap to a new Nigeria” showed that the closest information to the issue of restructuring was contained in a section titled “Strengthen peace, security and Foreign Policy.”

Under that section, the APC listed its roadmap for peace, security and foreign policy to include; to enable states to have their own local police forces that address the special needs of each community, including community policing initiatives that restore trust among local citizens; establishing a serious crime squad with state-of-the-art training and equipment to combat terrorism, militancy and ethno-religious communal clashes; and to provide a comprehensive compensation plan for victims of ethno-religious crisis, communal clashes and terrorism.

Presidency Shocked, Rattled As Abuja Court Throws Out Buhari’s Application in Certificate Case

Presidency Shocked, Rattled As Abuja Court Throws Out Buhari’s Application in Certificate Case

Presidency Shocked, Rattled As Abuja Court Throws Out Buhari’s Application in Certificate Case
SignalNG - The Honorable Justice Ademola Adeniyi sitting at the Federal High Court 7, Abuja on Thursday 26th, May 2016 dismissed the Preliminary Objections filed by President Muhammadu Buhari in the case instituted against him, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/110/2015 by an Abuja based Legal Practitioner, Barr. Nnamdi Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe challenging his competence to stand election into the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria when he lacks the basic educational qualifications set out in the Constitution.

The development has reportedly thrown the Nigerian presidency into disquiet as President Buhari and his handlers greeted the ruling with shock, as very few Nigerians including members of Buhari’s government realized the case was still in court.

According to an informed source on the development, the ruling has caught the Buhari presidency unawares and has posed a big distraction for government activities at the Villa. “Nobody even knew the case was still on. The story was not even reported in the mainstream media. No paper carried the Thursday ruling. But I can tell you the Presidency is rattled and seriously hoping that the case does not resurface again in the public domain because of the huge embarrassment it could cause the President. But more importantly, there are concerns about the safety of the judge and the plaintiff”, the source disclosed.

Recall that in February 2015, Nnamdi Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe, Esq. filed an Originating Summons at the Federal High Court, Abuja praying the Court to among others declare that Buhari is unqualified to aspire to the position of President not having sat for the Secondary School Certificate and also deposing to a false affidavit about his educational qualifications contrary to the Electoral Act.

Buhari and the APC instead of entering a defence on the merits and exhibiting any educational certificates obtained by Buhari, tried to frustrate the hearing of the case by filing several objections to the competence of the action.

President Buhari reportedly retained over twenty SANs led by Chief Wole Olanipekun, Chief Akin Olujinmi, Femi Falana, etc., who for over one year now have failed to file any defence for Buhari or APC but instead used every trick in the book to delay the case.

But on Thursday, the Hon. Justice Ademola Adeniyi in his ruling on the case, dismissed all applications by the defendant as totally lacking in merit. He held that the suit filed by Nnamdi Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe was competent and the service on Buhari and APC was also competent.

He thereafter adjourned the case to the 16th day of June 2016 for hearing of the substantive Originating Summons to determine whether Buhari’s educational qualifications meets the minimum standards required by the Constitution.

According to reports made available to SIGNAL, only the counsel to INEC was in Court, the plaintiff was absent but wrote to the Court explaining that he received notice of the date for the ruling the previous night and was out of town and could not make it. APC (2nd Respondent) and Buhari (3rd Respondent) were absent, were not represented and did not write to Court.

It will be recalled that there were claims by online handlers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that the Nigerian Army  located President Buhari’s “missing certificate” after the elections. The missing certificate saga raised contention as to the eligibility of Buhari to contest the presidential election. However, it is on record that there was no official statement by the Nigerian Army up till this day corroborating claims that the certificate has been found.

It was gathered that following the three divisions that emerged in the Party on last Saturday, APC leadership reportedly directed its leaders in the affected states to everything possible to bring the PDP lawmakers into its fold since the electoral law allows defection once there is a division within a political party without losing one's seat.

A member of the PDP in the National Assembly who confirmed this development to the Nigerian Tribune in Abuja yesterday said that this might forced the party members  to come together to resolve their   problems

"The pressures are just too much; the leaders of the APC are mounting serious pressures on us to come over to them, following the latest development in our party, the pressures are coming with various promises and am afraid some of our members may bow to the pressures since they will have nothing to lose," the source.

According to our source, "we cannot continue to waste our time and resources; we are tired of the ending crises, there are factions here and there in all the states and the zone and all fighting for selfish interests, we thought the coming of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff would unite the party but alas, look at what is happening now, PDP is supposed to be providing a credible opposition to the ruling APC.

This came just as the National Secretariat of the former ruling Party, popularly known as "WADATA Plaza" in Abuja remained sealed on the orders of the Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase.

The Plaza was sealed off in the early hours of Sunday, following the three divisions that emerged in the Party on Saturday with the three factions threatening to take over the party secretariat on Monday.

The road leading to the Plaza were barricaded with two trucks belonging the Nigeria Police Force, while the staff of the secretariat, journalists and visitors were politely turned back by the stern looking mobile police personnel.

The staff and journalists covering the party were seen in groups discussing the lasted development in the Party.

The Caretaker Committee headed by the former Haduna State governor, Senator Ahmed Markarif, put in place at the Port-Harcourt convention to oversee the affairs of the party did not show up as expected while the Ali Modu Sheriff-led National Working Committee, which rejected the Caretaker Committee and vowed to take over the secretariat was said to be attending a crucial meeting at a location in the city and the third faction led by Senator Ibrahim Mantu was nowhere to be found.

As at press time, the Board of Trustees of the party was said to be meeting on the crisis in the Party
