Why Nigerians Have Tortoise Mentality - TheGuardian

Why Nigerians Have Tortoise Mentality - TheGuardian

buhari
TheGuardian - The burning desire by Nigerians to see President Buhari succeed underscores the urgent expectation for change to manifest without delay. As it were, Nigerians are not disposed to being patient. Impatience is a norm. The virtue of patience is scarce and this is understandable.

Understandable in the sense that the country has been raped and bastardised and Nigerians denied the good things of life since independence. The desire for change started from October 1, 1960. That change did not come. Barely six years into independence, the country was plunged into a fierce fratricidal civil war that claimed over a million lives.

After the war ended in January 1970, and the military took over the reins of government, Nigerians continued to expect change. The civilian interregnum between October 1979 and December 1983, was a huge disappointment. The civilians re-enacted corruption and maladministration that brought back the military.

In a nutshell, from May 1967 to October 1999, a period of 32 years, Nigeria’s affairs were run by unaccountable military juntas that failed woefully to bring the expected change in the country. The country was put in a ruinous path that only a conscientious, patriotic and committed leader could reverse.

When a new democratic dispensation was birthed in October 1999 with former president, Olusegun Obasanjo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the helm of affairs, Nigerians re-enacted the desire for change. Obasanjo had the opportunity to bring change but failed after eight years of mesmerization. Obasanjo handed the baton to President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who unfortunately died early in his administration. Nigerians think that Yar’Adua demonstrated inklings of change with his 7-Point Agenda that never materialised.

President Goodluck Jonathan succeeded Yar’Adua but instead of continuing with the 7-Point Agenda, floated a transformation agenda, which Nigerians interpreted as another side of the same coin called change. Jonathan’s perceived personal desire to bring change failed due to the greed and avarice of the powers in PDP. Thus, for 16 years, rather than see change, Nigerians saw unthinkable sleaze and utter degradation of the country.

It is little wonder, then, that when President Muhammadu Buhari and his All Progressives Congress (APC) capitalised on the psyche of Nigerians, which is desire for change, and came up with the CHANGE mantra during the 2015 general elections, Nigerians overwhelmingly bought it. The thinking is that if Buhari, whom they already know to be a no-nonsense man, is the man who will bring the change that everybody wants, so be it.

Consequently, Buhari won the 2015 presidential election and no sooner was he sworn in on May 29, 2015 that Nigerians began to demand for the change he promised. But the change is not by magic. With the mountain of problems, he ground has to be cleared first and foundation laid upon which change would be built. But Nigerians are not ready to take excuses. They want instant change.

The proverbial tortoise is known to be the wisest animal in the animal kingdom. But sometimes, it fails to apply the wisdom when it is mostly needed. Once upon a time, the animals conspired and threw the tortoise into a pit and left him there. After one year, the animals decided to bring him out of the pit. They informed the tortoise that he would be brought out from the pit on a particular day.

Rather than be patient, knowing that his ordeal would soon end, the tortoise became restless and began to hurry the animals to bring him out without further delay, claiming that the stench in the pit was killing him. The question is, after spending one full year in the pit and didn’t die, why can’t the tortoise be patient and let the animals pull him out on the appointed day?

I see a similarity between the tortoise mentality and the attitude of Nigerians who are rushing Buhari to bring change immediately even when the administration has not implemented a single budget. Granted that we all desire change, wisdom dictates that it is unrealistic to assess a government that has four years in less than a year. I think it is more sensible to support the government and watch what it is able to accomplish in four years.

I would like to stress that the change that Nigerians want cannot be accomplished by the government at the centre alone. There will be no change in Nigeria without the involvement of the states. Unfortunately, the states are overlooked while everybody is focusing on the Federal Government, which is totally misplaced.

All the basic social amenities – water, hospital, roads, schools, health centres, etc, that we need are largely the responsibility of the state governments. Though, the Federal Government had taken it upon itself, over the years, to be in-charge of electricity, nothing stops any state government from getting involved in power generation as an independent supplier.

If each state government gets serious with power supply, the power from the centre would be negligible.

The same applies to roads. Available statistics shows that there are about 200,000 kilometres of roads in the country, out of which the total federal highways is about 34,340.90 kilometres. The states and local governments have responsibility for 165,660 kilometres of roads. If the states and local government councils do their roads, the federal roads will pave into insignificance.

It is ironic that while people lament over the dilapidated inter-state federal highways like the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Lagos-Shagamu-Ore Expressway, Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, etc, no one mentions the intra-state roads that really serve the people. I can’t understand why the attention of Nigerians is always focused at the president while the governors are left out. Virtually, all the administrations that have presided over the affairs of Nigeria since independence passed through this unfortunate syndrome.

The worst set of Nigerians is those calling for the return of corruption with the hash-tag “Bring Back Our Corruption.” The promoters of this demented and crazy campaign argue that under corruption, food was cheap and life was better.

Across the civilised world, progress is made when there is rapport and understanding between the people and their leaders. There can be no progress when the leaders and the people are heading in opposite direction.  Buhari’s anti-corruption war, if it succeeds, is big change that this country badly needs.

APC Crisis: Buhari Endorses Oyegun's Sack As Pressure Mounts, His Many Sins Revealed

APC Crisis: Buhari Endorses Oyegun's Sack As Pressure Mounts, His Many Sins Revealed

John Odigie-Oyegun and Buhari
Ripples - Prominent forces within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may have secured President Muhammadu Buhari’s backing to dispense with national chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, Ripples can exclusively report.

Investigations revealed that the Board of Trustees (BoT), National Executive Council (NEC) and most members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party as well as leading National Assembly members have decided to do away with Oyegun.

Oyegun, it was gathered, has become a dispensable commodity according to the forces against him because of his mishandlings of several issues in the party.

The national chairman is being accused of committing serious infractions that have created needless troubles for the party.

It was learnt that all these infractions have been collated and explained to the Presidency, which has since decided to go with the Oyegun-must-go project.

Sources said President Buhari was initially opposed to the campaign to send Oyegun packing because their relationship dated back to 2007 when the President contested under the defunct All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) with Oyegun playing prominent, visible roles.

Buhari was said to have balked at the idea, according to findings, because of the suspicion that the move was just a campaign of calumny against the former Edo State governor.

He was however swayed over after the infractions committed by Oyegun and how they have affected the fortunes of the party were tabled before him.

The President was said to have told the party chieftains that with all the evidence against the national chairman, he was no longer fit to continue in office.

Buhari however reportedly insisted Oyegun should be given a soft-landing to avert a major backlash that will trail a forced resignation or sack.

Prominent among the infractions the anti-Oyegun elements presented was his handling of the Kogi governorship supplementary debacle that produced Yahaya Bello.

It was learnt many NWC and NEC members actually endorsed James Faleke to fly the party’s ticket but they were allegedly shut down by Oyegun.

Oyegun, many of them alleged, was bought over by Bello, a wealthy business merchant, with a whopping N300million “as fuel money” after a visit to the chairman in Abuja.

This ‘fuel money’, APC chieftains alleged was why Oyegun stuck out his neck for Bello even when some prominent members begged for Faleke to continue the inconclusive election.

It was learnt that the party’s leaders succeeded in proving this allegation to Buhari at a meeting last week in Abuja.

The national chairman is also accused of hobnobbing with Senate President Bukola Saraki, who is facing trial at the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) over charges of false declaration of assets.

Oyegun was said to have angered party chieftains when he recognised Saraki few days after his emergence in defiance of the APC’s directives.

His enemies were believed to have told Buhari it was despicable for the chairman to have recognised Saraki even when it was obvious the President was livid about his emergence and avoided him for months.

“If our chairman could recognise a rebellious Senate President when the President was still angry with the process that produced him, it shows he was throwing his weight around.

“Look at how the mess has created troubles for the anti-corruption war. The National Assembly is clearly obstructing the President’s policies and programmes.'

“By recognising him without clearance from the Presidency, Oyegun compromised the party. He boasted Saraki’s defiance and slighted Buhari,” a
source privy to the Oyegun-must-go project confided.

The source added that the March 22 NWC meeting in Abuja will be the beginning of the end for Oyegun while his fate might be sealed on March 23 when the BoT meeting holds.

The March 24 NEC meeting, according to the plan, will serve as the platform to push Oyegun out.

Already there are pressures on him to turn in his resignation so as not to give the impression that he was edged out.
Oyegun, who returned from a 10-day leave on Monday, it was learnt, has been lobbying to save his job.

But sources said the party has suffered greatly under him.

“We are drifting. There is no discipline and we are not in charge. We need a chairman who can rein in things for the President so that Buhari can concentrate on the business of governance,” a NWC member told our correspondent on Monday night.

APC Candidates In Abuja Remove Buhari's Picture From Posters - Abuja Inquirer

Muhammadu Buhari
Abuja Inquirer - Ahead of the March 19 area council poll in the Federal Capital Territory, candidates of the All Progressives Congress, APC, have removed the picture of President Muhammadu Buhari from their campaign posters.

Prior to now, most of the candidates featured the picture of the president as a means to boost their electoral fortunes.

However, our correspondent observed that in AMAC, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Bwari, the posters bearing the pictures of the president have all being replaced by fresh ones without him featuring.

Efforts to speak to party officials of the APC in the FCT was met with a brick wall as none of them was prepared to offer any explanation for the sudden change.

Some residents argued that the dire situation of things could be reason why the APC candidates decided to take the ‘safer route’ of not featuring the president as it could serve as reminder of failed promises.

Speaking on the issue Ismaila Bala, a businessman and resident of Gwagwa, said; “which politician will want to associate with somebody you want to vote for and you are crying about his style of governance? Voting is done mostly at the grassroots and that is where this economic hardship is biting more.

“A mudu of rice that was sold for N250 is now N450, and that is how it is with other commodities almost 100 percent increase, meanwhile there is no money in circulation to buy the items. So I think they are being wise to have removed his picture from their posters, because people are hungry.”

Reacting to the allegation, the Candido Campaign Organization spokesperson, Mr. Dayo Lawal, said there are many posters with some having Buhari's picture. President Buhari is our leader, we are proud to identify with him.”

But he could not show any of the posters with the president’s picture.

“When the hired crowd was denied access to the airport premises, they climbed over fences, breaking the iron barriers and destroying the Security scanners. All the pictures are available for confirmation.

“Also, the hired thugs were busy distributing presidential campaign posters, car stickers reading

‘Kwankwassiya 2019, Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for President, among others,” he said. The APC chairman said when other dignitaries from all walks of life – including those from the opposition party – came to condole with the governor, none of them made their visits violent. He said despite the fact that the funeral rites of the governor’s mother were conducted with decorum, humility, civility and decency in keeping with religious and cultural values of the people, Mr. Kwankwaso dishonoured the dead by holding a “violent rally”.

“During the senator’s visit, there was a violent rally and open show of thuggery as his supporters were seen openly wielding machetes, swords and other dangerous weapons,” he said. Mr. Doguwa also said the party frowned at Mr. Kwankwaso’s supporters’ call for replacement of Mr. Buhari with Mr. Kwankwaso by 2019.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has beaten former Lagos State Governor and National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and former United Nations Secretary General, Koffi Anan, to clinch the African Leadership Magazine Person of the Year, 2015.

Ex-president Jonathan also defeated the founder, ECONET Wireless, Strive Masiyiwa; the Chairman, Heirs Holding, Tony Elumulelu and the President, African Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwumi Adesina.

This was disclosed by former Pro Tempore President of the Liberian Senate and Chairman of the 2015 African Leadership Person of the Year selection committee, Cletus Wortoson, In a letter to ex-President Jonathan, Wortoson said:

“There is no one best suited at the moment than your excellency, to advise the continent’s leaders on the merits of good governance and enduring democracy.

“Your popular mantra of ‘one man one vote’ and ‘my ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian,’ is a message that must be preached loud and clear on the continent, hence our endorsement.

“It is with great pleasure that I bring you the news of your selection as the African Leadership Magazine Person of the Year, 2015.”

The committee applauded Jonathan for his “uncommon characteristics” in deepening democracy in Africa, adding that “In adopting you as our choice, we placed a very high premium on your commitment towards deepening democracy on the continent – a characteristic which is uncommon among most African leaders at the highest level today.

“Chief among the many factors we considered was your efforts towards promoting good governance in Africa through the promotion of free and fair elections across the continent.

“Your recent assignment to Tanzania received accolades and international acclaim, because you discharged the responsibility most creditably.

“We resolved that there is no one best suited at the moment than Your Excellency, to advise the continent’s leaders on the merits of good governance and enduring democracy.

“The board is fully persuaded that you have served your country, Nigeria, meritoriously, conducted a free and fair election, in which you lost and yet conceded defeat, a development seeing by many in the continent as historical.

“Your popular mantra of ‘one man one vote’ and ‘my ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian,’ is a message that must be preached loud and clear on the continent, hence our endorsement.”

Recall that the award has been previously won by Liberian President and Nobel prize winner, Johnson Sirleaf; former Ghanaian President, John Kuffour; Founder of Mo Ibrahim Foundation, Dr. Mo Ibrahim; Chairman, Honeywell Group, Oba Otudeko and lawn tennis goddess, Serena Williams.

Recall also, that ex-President Jonathan also became the first African leader to win the Martin Luther King human rights award.

APC Crisis Deepens; Oyegun Probably 'SACKED', Oni Occupies The Chairman's Office; NWC Shun Office

Silent crisis rocking the leadership of the ruling All progressives Congress becoming messy as members of members of National Working Committee, (NWC) staged a walk out, insisting that the national Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun resigns, the Authority Newspaper says.
Last week, News Punch reported that Chief Oyegun handed over the mantle of leadership of the party to former Ekiti State Governor and the Deputy National Chairman of the Party, Chief Segun Oni, stating that he, Oyegun was going on 10 days vacation.
According to our sourceThe development has grounded activities at the APC National Secretariat as all the National Working Committee (NWC) members have continued to stay away from their offices.
The AUTHORITY learnt that the APC had been facing a silent leadership crisis as some top members have fallen out with Odigie-Oyegun over his leadership style and have demanded his resignation.

It was reported that Chief Odigie-Oyegun was forced to proceed on a compulsory leave to pave the way for the resolution of the feud, but his critics have insisted that he must not return to the seat after the expiration of the holidays.
Odigie-Oyegun, however, debunked the claims, stressing that he was proceeding on a 10-day leave to have some rest as demanded by his doctors after a hectic period of activities since he emerged as the APC national chairman.
“I have been chairman for how long now? Going to two years, and it has been a very intense period building the party and a very intense period putting the government together up to this point.
“All that has happened is that I think I deserve a bit of a break and that will start effective Monday and in my absence my deputy here, Chief Segun Oni, will cover my beat. It is that simple, it is that straightforward. Any speculation about not being in office is of no consequence. On Tuesday, I was down with malaria; I managed on Wednesday to attend that crucial meeting at the Presidency; yesterday I had to go to the hospital just to be sure and today I am at work, full stop”, the APC national chairman noted, while reacting to reported crisis over his leadership of the party. But it was a more confused situation yesterday when it was noticed that the national chairman’s absence has crippled activities at the party’s secretariat, with only the acting chairman, Segun Oni and the National Youth Leader, Dasuki Jalo, who came in briefly on Monday and Tuesday.
A staff member of the Secretariat, who pleaded anonymity, told newsmen in confidence that “all the national officers are staying away because they don’t want to answer questions as regard the running of the party.”
Another source who raised concerns over the future of Odigie-Oyegun as the national chairman of the party, revealed that the acting national chairman, Segun Oni, has already moved into Odigie-Oyegun’s office, saying “that is an indication that the APC chairman might not come back because if he is acting as chairman, he is supposed to do that from his own office, not Odigie-Oyegun’s office.”
The APC National Caucus will meet on March 22, ahead of the March 23, 2016 Board of Trustees meeting, while the party’s NEC is billed to meet on March 24 to tackle most of the crises facing the party.
Several attempts made by The AUTHORITY to get the reaction of the APC National Secretary, Mai Mala Bunu, who is also acting as the party’s Publicity Secretary, proved abortive as he did not pick several calls that were put across to him.
When Oni was contacted on the issue, he said that he was in an APC campaign rally ahead of the March 19 council election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
