Fashola A Mere Figure Head At Power Ministry - Emir Saunisi of Kano Reveals 'Cabals' Behind Electricity
News Proof 14.7.16 No comments Edit Post
The Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, has reiterated his stand that the position of power minister in Nigeria has no weight.
According to him, virtually all arms of the electricity value chain had been taken away from the control of the minister, leaving the occupant of the office with nothing to control.
The Emir stated this during a stakeholders’ workshop on Road Transport Management and Mass Transit Operations in Nigeria, organised by the Federal Ministry of Transportation in Abuja yesterday.
He said, “Very often in this country, we do not give as much focus as we should to the organic link between the objectives, our strategies, processes, procedures and our results.
“And one example I’ve always given is the power sector in Nigeria. I used to ask this question that, ‘please what really is the Power minister responsible for?’ And it sounds like a silly question.
“But the truth is, I don’t know about now, but as of the time I was in government, could anyone legitimately hold the Power minister responsible for delivering power? The PHCN (Power Holding Company of Nigeria) was privatised by the Bureau of Public Enterprises; the Ministry of Petroleum Resources is responsible for gas; regulation and pricing is done by the NERC (Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission), which is an independent body.
“By the time you took out everything you need in power, the minister has nothing. He controls nothing. The Power minister cannot boast that I will deliver 1,000 megawatts because he can actually build a gas powered turbine and not have the gas. This is because the gas is under the control of a different ministry.
“Also, for hydro, the dams belong to the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and the sites around the dams belong to the state governments. The water turbines belong to the Ministry of Power, but if you want to use hydro, the Ministry of Power does not have the dams. The point I’m making is that one of the reasons why we’ve not made much improvement on power is due to a lack of coordinating mechanisms.”
He added that “I kind of think that we can have a similar problem with transport. We need to have some framework for coordination and harmonisation for a clear division of roles and responsibilities, and also for ensuring that everything is mainstreamed into one strategic objective. So, whoever is responsible for any part of the transportation chain should have a forum where you come and coordinate activities.”
APRIL FOOOOL! But Power Generation, Indeed, Dropped To ZERO Megawatts
News Proof 1.4.16 1 comment Edit Post
In what the authorities attributed to system failure, Nigeria’s grid system totally collapsed yesterday, leaving millions of citizens in utter darkness.
Although, Power, Works and Housing Minister, Babatunde Fashola said it was because “four turbines stopped working,” the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) did not state any reason on its website.
Statistics obtained by Daily Sun from its website indicated that power allocation to all distribution companies across the country dropped to 0 Megawatts (MW).
This happened when President, Muhammadu Buhari was in far away United States of America (USA) to press that the country be allowed to exploit its nuclear energy resources to boost power infrastructure.
Load statistics from the System Operator website indicated that as at 12.58.00 hours yesterday, Ikeja Disco, Ibadan, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Benin, Jos, Kaduna,Yola, Eko and Enugu, got zero allocation.
Daily Sun investigation across Lagos indicated that many areas were in darkness as at 9.20pm and the situation was same for Ogun, Ibadan, Benin, Ilorin and Lokoja.
Early this week, Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) said businesses, especially MSME’s have lost over N30 billion through the unavailability of energy supply.
Speaking in the same vein, Mr. Nnamdi Okafor, Managing Director of May & Baker (M&B) Plc lamented that the the cost of doing business in the country is very high. “To provide power, we spend about N350 million every year; just to provide electricity for our plants to run. In advanced countries, even in some other developing countries, they are the things you take for granted. As I speak to you, I am not sure I will run my factory because I was not able to access foreign exchange to buy raw materials we need. It is as bad as that.”
General Secretary of National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN), Issa Aremu said the situation would further worsen Nigeria’s industrial situation as it would make Nigeria’s products less competitive. “The situation had always been bad, but, this time around, it would further impoverish Nigerian workers whose income would be worsen further. There is no doubt our government needs to put an end to all these crises,” he said.
Aremu insisted that it is high time the Minister of Power, Housing and Works, Babatunde Raji Fashola, address Nigerians on the reasons why the whole country have been in darkness for almost two weeks with no visible solution in sight.
He noted that the Power Minister was always ready to speak for the Gencos and Discos on why they should increase electricity bills, but has never, for a day since he took up appointment, addressed Nigerians on his plan to improve electricity.
Culled from The Sun Newspaper
Only four months have passed since President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated his cabinet, but some of the ministers have already been advised to resign by the dissatisfied Nigerian public and civil society organizations.
Buhari, who was elected partly on a pledge to tackle corruption and insecurity, promised to select competent and clean personalities. Nigeria received its long-awaited government after 166 days when the president swore in his “saint ministers” on November 11, 2015.
But when the list was released, many were disappointed, asking whether the wait had been worth it, and whether those selected were the best in Nigeria.
Below is the list of ministers that have been asked to go:
1. Kemi Adesoun
The Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders has defined Adeosun, as a misfit for the task if eventually confirmed by the Nigerian Senate.
The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) once called the minister of finance to resign due to the padded 2016 budget.
Ifeanyi Ubah of Capital Oil also wants the minister to vacate her position because of the FOREX crisis in the country.
She was also criticised for her arithmetic goof when the minister said that the addition of 16 billion and 6 billion would amount to N24billion
2. Lai Mohammed
Nigerians said that Mohammed has established himself as an instrument of cheap propaganda and disinformation.
Every time the minister speaks, Nigerians call for his immediate resignation.
3. Ibe Kachikwu
APC south-south called for the resignation of petroleum minister after his “no magic wand” comment.
The Nigerian Labour Congress wants Kachikwu to resign for saying that it was cheaper to import refined petroleum products than refine locally.
Nigerians are not satisfied with his activities due to the incessant fuel scarcity in the country.
4. Babatunde Fashola
Fashola has emerged under the Buhari government as one of the most important, if not the most important president’s men.
However, both the NLC and Trade Labour Congress, TUC ask the minister to resign for increasing the electricity tariff.
5. Heineken Lokpobiri
Members of his home chapter of the APC ask Lokpobiri, who is the minister of state for agriculture, to relieve his post.
6. Rotimi Amaechi
There were indications that President Buhari is under pressure from the foreign community to sack his minister of transport following his indictment for corruption.
Amaechi is one of the most controversial ministers in Buhari’s government.
