2019: 7 Parties Join PDP Merger Talks; Falae, Balarabe Musa, Others Names Filter
Seven political parties reportedly in merger negotiation with the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of 2019 general elections, News Punch understands.

The PDP leadership, last night, towards forming a formidable political front to capture power in 2019, met with leaders and selected delegates from the seven parties, report earlier published by New Telegraph says

Though names of the parties are yet to be disclosed, but our source revealed that that Labour Party (LP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) are among the parties PDP might be forging an alliance with.

About two weeks ago, Chairman of the PDP Strategy Review and Interparty Affairs Committee, Prof. Jerry Gana, met with the SDP leader, Chief Olu Falae in Lagos.

The meeting might be in connection with the moves to merging with the SDP. At the submission of the committee’s final report to the PDP leadership yesterday, Gana announced that the initial contacts made by the committee “have yielded positive responses from seven people-focused and social democratic parties.”

He, however, said the meeting between the PDP National Caretaker Committee and leaders and selected delegates of the seven parties has “nothing to do with the rumoured mega party, but a separate and highly principled initiative of the PDP.”

According to Gana, “Our desire is to have all genuine democrats and friends of the people to flow together and provide a fresh and trustworthy leadership to promote and ensure a people-friendly process of national development.”

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, confirmed the meeting later at a press conference.

A source, who confided in our correspondent yesterday, said that PDP and PRP met penultimate Saturday and have raised a six-man Contact Committee each, for further negotiations.

“Professor Jerry Gana will head the PDP six-man committee, while the National Leader of PRP, Alhaji Balarabe Musa will head his party’s team,” the source confided in New Telegraph.

Although details of the maiden meeting, which held in Abuja about 12 days ago, remain sketchy, the source said that PRP had insisted on an alliance and not a merger because it wants to maintain its unique pro-masses ideology.

When contacted, Balarabe, a former governor of Kaduna State, confirmed that a meeting between his party and PDP actually held, but didn’t divulge the details.

He, however, told New Telegraph that: “PDP has approached us even before the 2015 elections. And we had an understanding that in the event that they lose the presidential election, we will come together to strengthen democracy in Nigeria. That time, they will be in the opposition.”

The chairman, National Caretaker Committee of the PDP, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, was specifically mandated to get across to Balarabe in order to sound him out on the possibility of working together.

It is still not clear what kind of alliance will exist between PDP and PRP, but another source said that the working relationship is aimed at making inroads in the North, the stronghold of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“In spite of the failure of the APC-led government, the masses still love President Muhammadu Buhari. Balarabe and PRP are also very popular in the North, so we intend to slice into Buhari’s heartland,” he revealed.

PDP had maintained that it is not part of the rumoured mega party and does not want to change its name.

Meanwhile, the submission of the Gana report attracted many founding fathers of the party. Among PDP elders present at the occasion included former Minister of Finance, Mallam Adamu Ciroma; businessman, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu; former Jigawa State governor, Dr. Sule Lamido and Ambassador Aminu Wali.

Chairman of PDP, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, said the party’s leadership does not want to be distracted by the plan of people who want to make PDP remain irrelevant.

“We have been facing challenges. One of the ways evolved to hold PDP down and destroy opposition party in the country  was to tie us down and make us irrelevant by using the court to tie us down,” he added.

Makarfi said the party has realised its mistakes, which he stated include imposition of candidates and taking people for granted, which the report identified. He apologised on behalf of PDP leaders for these mistakes, and described the Gana report as “excellent”, which he added, would help in repositioning the PDP.

Ciroma, who felt elated at the gathering of members of the party since PDP lost the 2015 general elections, said he was convinced that the party is still alive.

“I feel very proud of being here. I feel proud of being involved with the PDP. I feel very proud of being one of the members who initiated the formation of this party.

And I can say today that the party is alive and well,” he said. Iwuanyanwu, who dismissed the report that he has left the PDP, described the Jerry Gana’s report as a very important milestone in the rebuilding process of the party.

Even if Buhari rigs 2019 elections, he will still lose - Balarabe Musa

Balarabe Musa
Alhaji Balarabe Musa, a former Governor of old Kaduna State and National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), has said that even if President Muhammadu Buhari rigged 2019 elections, he will still lose because not only the opposition, even his supporters have lost confidence in him.

"As the president, Buhari has the means of transforming everything but obviously, it is quite clear that Buhari's popularity before 2015 elections and now have gone down drastically ," Balarabe said.

He said, "If he (Buhari) thinks he is still popular as he was before winning the last presidential election, then he must be deceiving himself. He has betrayed those who voted for him by abandoning his promises and instead, inflicting pains on the masses. Since he took over as president, the country has suffered from one hardship to another.

"In one of my recent interviews, I made it clear that unless this government focus on its primary responsibility which is the welfare of the people, Nigerians may soon be forced to rise against his government should things continue the way they are.

"I don't know if the President intends to continue beyond 2019, but with the current state of affairs in the country, Buhari certainly should not expect the masses who managed to survive to 2019, to still go to the polls and vote for him. I don't think that will happen even if the APC rigs the election.

"The President should not allow himself be deceived by those around him. He should listen to Nigerians and do all within his power to alleviate the sufferings of the masses," he said.

FUEL HIKE: FG's Decision STUPID, SENSELESS - Buhari's Friend, Prof. Tam David-West Blasts

FUEL HIKE: FG's Decision STUPID, SENSELESS - Buhari's Friend, Prof. Tam David-West Blasts

Prof. Tam David-West, a historical ally of President Muhammadu Buhari has described the Muhammadu Buhari-led federal Government's decision to hike the fuel price from N86 to sudden N145 per/liter as 'stupid' one, report according to TheEagleOnline suggests.

Our source says, Tam West banded with a historical adversary to rail against the new pump price of fuel, which caught consumers by surprise on Thursday, May 12, and scattered family budgets with the ripple effects.

Transport fares have gone up everywhere as a consequence, speeding off with the prices of everything from foodstuff, other household items, plus school fees, to the cost of a hair cut in small shops, and grinding pepper in open markets in Kano and Calabar.

Buhari’s right hand man, Tam David-West, picked holes in the hike in fuel price from N86 to N145 per litre.

The professor of virology and former petroleum minister argued from Ibadan that the increase announced by Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, does not make sense.

His view resonated up North with Buhari’s traditional critic, former Kaduna State Governor, Balarabe Musa, who accused the president and his All Progressives Congress (APC) members of fleecing Nigerians to amass a war chest for the general election in 2019.

Importing at N86, selling at N145

“It is stupid for two reasons. First, the same NNPC (Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation) a few days ago was filling petrol stations and selling fuel for N86. How can you turn around a few days after to say N145?” David-West asked.

He said the stock now sold at N145 per litre had been imported before the announcement.

“No new petroleum has come in. It takes two weeks for vessels from Europe to arrive Nigeria. There is something wrong with the logic.”

Deregulating, fixing price

The second abnormality with the increase, David-West insisted, is the directive to marketers not to sell above N145.
“How can you say people should import fuel and you tell them how to sell it? It is stupid. You cannot tell a private man to import fuel into the country, and when it arrives the government will now tell him how much to sell it.
“It is stupid. It negates basic economic principles. When I see Buhari, I will make a formal statement. I cannot see how they can justify it.”

Other queries

David-West said he has noted 12 areas to take Kachikwu on, not only on fuel price, but also how the NNPC is run.

“But if I say it now, they will misunderstand me. They would say I want to be minister. I don’t want to be minister. My record there is clear.

“Okay, look at what [Kachikwu] said – that there is hydrocarbon in every part of Nigeria; which is not possible. He is saying a lot of things that are outrageous.

“When the time comes I will take him on. I don’t want to say it now so that it is not misunderstood. I want to see Buhari first.”

David-West said he believes that Buhari does not know what Kachikwu was cooking before the hike.
“Buhari is not in the country. They rushed it because they knew that if he was around he would not allow them. You increased petrol price to N145, and you said immediately, like a military dictator.”

David-West argued that he was wrongly quoted that fuel was going to sell for N40 per litre once Buhari got into office.

“I said if they removed 14 items they are adding to pump price which should not be there, petrol would sell for N40 per litre.

“There are a lot of things they added to inflate it. That is cheating.

“They are adding NPA (Nigeria Ports Authority) charge, jetty depot price, storage payment, margin for retailers, bank charges, transportation from Europe, bridging, and all sorts of things.

“If they remove all these, petrol price will come down to N40. A Nigerian professor of petroleum in Texas has confirmed my figure.

“Let me tell you about bridging. When I was minister, bridging was paid by the government, not by consumers.

“I met N400 million in the bridging account when I was minister. If you take petrol from Port Harcourt to Sokoto, the government pays for the haulage, not consumers.”
