2019: Bisi Akande, Okupe, Fasehun Other Yoruba Leaders United In Ibadan Again, May Float New Political Party

Yoruba leaders meeting in Ibadan again to form a unify political front
Barely 15 days after the Southwest leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC met in Ibadan to seek peace among warring leaders, another Yoruba Leaders have also met to discuss the political future of the region.

It was gathered according to The Sun Newspaper that the Yoruba leaders in the Southwest geo-political zone may float a new political party ahead of the 2019 general elections with a view to demanding a new order for the country.

The indication emerged yesterday at a national colloquium organised by a pro-Yoruba political organisation, Yoruba Patriotic Movement (YPM) entitled “Resetting the Yoruba Nations Agenda for Rapid, Systematic and Sustainable Development”, held at Jogor Event Centre, Ibadan.

The colloquium, chaired by former Acting National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Bisi Akande, a former governor of Osun State, had in attendance Yoruba leaders from across various political parties in the country. The leaders agreed that if a new party would not be founded, most of them could move en masse into an existing party.

It was gathered according to Sun Newspaper that the Yoruba political leaders across various parties might come together and form a political party. The YPM wanted all political leaders and their followers, which cut across

APC, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Accord Party (AP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Labour Party (LP) and others, to be in the only one political party that would be established.

The meeting agreed that there should be a Yoruba summit, Yoruba economic agenda and that all Yoruba groups should register under the YPM.

In his address, Akande said the focal point of the programme centred on unity in politics among the Yoruba, irrespective of party affiliation.

He said: “After this, whenever and wherever we will meet, even if not in my house, wherever we will meet, I must be there. However, we must understand our languages.”

Former Chief of Staff to ex-governor Adebayo Alao-Akala in Oyo State, Dr. Saka Balogun, who is the interim chairman of YPM, said: “We want as many as possible Yoruba politicians to be in the same political party. It might not be possible for all of us to be in the same party, but if most of us are in the same party, it would be more convenient for the agenda we plan to set to work out well.

“We are not seceding from Nigeria, but we are maintaining that we don’t want a situation where Yorubas will not be given the due respect or honour it deserves in this country. It is not compulsory that we establish a new party; it is possible that we all move en mass to an existing party. Such a party definitely won’t remain the same again.”

Former Senior Special Assistant on Political Matters to former president Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Doyin Okupe, also noted: “We cannot but have a Yoruba agenda as long as we are in Nigeria. We must have an agenda. And it is not that we can come up with that here (at the meeting). But we must note it that we must have one.

“On restructuring of Nigeria, most people are misinterpreting us (the Yoruba) that we want to secede; that’s why we are clamouring for restructuring, but it is not true. Yoruba believe in our hard work. In the days of Awolowo, we can see what they made of the Western Region. Till today, both state and federal governments have not matched up with that standard.

“We are clamouring for restructuring so that we can have independence to harness our sweat, hard work and intelligence for the development of our people. You can’t compare educational setting in Ibadan, Ile-Ife and other parts in the Southwest with what is in practice in Maiduguri or Kano. One legislation cannot guide education throughout Nigeria, that is impossible.”

Okupe added: “In our agenda, we must re-echo it that education should be the bedrock of the agenda. Whatever it will cost us, we should be ready to give it. If we say we should wait till when Nigeria is ready to determine where Yoruba is heading to, it may spell doom. The constitution of this country accepts that we are a federation. And as a federation, we have the grace to call all Yoruba nation that this is the path we wish to tread as Yoruba people.”

Present at the meeting were former ambassador to the Philippines, Chief Yemi Farounbi; a leader of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Dr. Fredrick Fasehun; former aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Doyin Okupe; and former military governor of Lagos State, Gen Raji Rasaki (retd).

Others were former Super Eagles chief coach, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde; former President General, Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Chief Bayo Oyero; a chieftain of Accord Party, Senator Femi Lanlehin;  Aare of Efon Kingdom, Dr. Kunle Olajide; Secretary to Oyo State Government, Alhaji Olalekan Alli, who represented Governor Ajimobi; Prof Soji Adejumo; and Mr Tunde Adejuyigbe, who represented Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State.

APC Crisis: Drama As Angry Aregbesola Walks Out On Journalists At Abeokuta Secret Meeting With Amosun, Ajimobi, Akande

Ajimobi and rauf aregbesola
There was a mild drama at Ogun State Government House Isale-Igbehin as Osun State Governor, Ogbani Rauf Aregbesola walked out on Journalists who were trying to quiz him on a closed door meeting help between him, the Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, Abiola Ajumobi; the Oyo's and the former interim national Chairman of the crisis-ridden All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief Bisi Akande,

The meeting, which according to Punch Newspaper came after they left the ‘Tributes Day’ held by the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, in honour of the late Sir Olaniwun Ajayi, an Afenifere chieftain, at his Isara-Remo home.

Akande in company with the governors of Oyo and Osun states, Abiola Ajimobi and Rauf Aregbesola, visited the Ogun State Government House, Abeokuta and held a closed-door meeting with the Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun.

As reported by Punch Newspaper, the meeting, which lasted for one hour, was not unconnected with the crisis rocking the APC.

Emerging from the Government House, both Akande and Ajimobi, while fielding questions from journalists, however, denied that there was crisis in the APC.

When asked by journalists on the alleged rift among  some leaders in the party, Akande merely replied, “There is no crisis in the party, we are one.”

Ajimobi also said the party was crisis-free.

When asked  why he was not at the APC governorship rally in Ondo State, Ajimobi simply replied, “Some of us were out of the country. Me, for example, I was in China.”

There was however a mild drama shortly after the closed- door meeting,  as Aregbesola  walked out on journalists who tried to get his comment.

Why I Actually Snubbed Akeredolu's Campaign Rally - Chief Bisi Akande

Why I Actually Snubbed Akeredolu's Campaign Rally - Chief Bisi Akande

Bisi Akande
A former Interim Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Bisi Akande, has said he did not shun the campaign of the party for its governorship candidate in Ondo State, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, contrary to reports in the media.

Akande, who spoke through his media aide, Mr. Lani Baderinwa, in a statement issued on Friday said he had been going abroad for medical treatment.

The former governor of Osun State, said he decided to stay away from stress in line with the advice of his doctors.

Apart from Akande, President Muhammadu Buhari; Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Governor Rauf Aregbesola were among those who were absent at the rally.

The statement read, “Chief Bisi Akande has no reason to shun APC campaigns and rallies in Ondo state because every APC aspirant that contested the Ondo state governorship primary in September has always been his close associate and knew so well that he (Bisi Akande) is being treated from one hospital to another in the USA, the U.K. and in Nigeria since last April.

“He, according to medical advice, is being asked to take things easy in the time being. Despite that, as an APC respectable leader, he has been working behind the scene to reconcile differences among the warring tendencies in the party.”

Buhari's Secret Talks With Tinubu's Men REVEALED; Pencils Down Tinubu's Men For The Looming Cabinet Shake-up

Buhari tinubu
The feud that has polarized the ruling All Progressives Congress national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and President Muhammadu Buhari may soon be resolved should a report according to Punch Newspaper is to go by.

The Sunday Punch reported that the prolonged cold war between President Muhammadu Buhari and his erstwhile close political associate and South-West political strongman, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, may soon come to an end.

The two sides, according to our source began planning to bury the hatchet during a recent meeting that President Buhari held with some of Tinubu’s loyalists in Aso Rock.

The President had met with the trio of Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, former Osun governor, Chief Bisi Akande, and Senator Olusola Adeyeye last week Sunday. The sources also said both parties agreed that the President needed to take some confidence-boosting measures to restore Tinubu’s faith in him.

The two men reportedly fell out following what Tinubu and his loyalists saw as attempts to diminish his contributions to President Buhari’s victory at the 2015 poll and erode his political capital in his South-West base. Some supporters of the former governor had also complained that the President rejected Tinubu’s ministerial nominees, and worked against the ex-Lagos governor’s candidates in the Kogi elections and Ondo governorship primary, among other ills.

A reliable source who was privy to the events that culminated in the meeting said its seeds were planted during President Buhari’s three-day state visit to Germany. Prior to that time, Buhari and Tinubu had not had any private communication in a while. But the source said the President contacted Akande, who is one of Tinubu’s closest associates and a former Interim Chairman of the APC, asking him to see him in Aso Rock.

The President’s call reportedly came barely 48 hours after the controversial interview the President’s wife, Aisha, granted the British Broadcasting Corporation. In the interview which went viral, the president’s wife accused her husband of neglecting those who helped him to power in 2015. Mrs. Buhari also threatened not to support her husband in 2019 if the President did not change tack.

Sources said although both men’s relationship began to sour almost as soon as Buhari won the election, it deteriorated when Professor John Paden, in his book titled ‘Muhammadu Buhari: Challenges of Leadership,’ claimed that Tinubu was against the emergence of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as Vice President.  Both Buhari and Tinubu were present at the book launch.

Insiders say this did not go down well with Tinubu and his men, as the All Progressives Congress national leader’s camp saw it as yet another attempt by the President and his men to reduce his contributions to the emergence of the APC government and also rewrite history.

Shortly after, Tinubu in a scathing open letter asked the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, to step down, after alleging that the chairman doctored results of the Ondo State APC governorship primary. Odigie-Oyegun, a former Edo State governor, who had been cautious in his initial response to Tinubu’s letter, paid a visit to Buhari in Aso Rock and thereafter launched an attack on Tinubu, describing his letter as ‘reckless.’

Seeing that he was fast losing at the centre, the APC chieftain, popularly known as the Jagaban (of Borgu), started reaching out to his political foes in the South-West in order to consolidate his influence in the region. With several meetings held, Tinubu’s most vocal critics such as Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Sir Olanihun Ajayi, among others, began to drum up support for him publicly.

A source in the presidency told our correspondent that Akande, who cut short his trip abroad to see the President, did not mince words during the meeting.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Akande told Buhari that despite the roles Tinubu and the South-West played in making him President, he had relegated the APC national leader and the region.

The source said, “Baba Akande told the President that they were not happy with him. He told Buhari that apart from not giving Tinubu sufficient consideration during the ministerial appointments, everything that played out in the Kogi and Ondo elections showed that the President was supporting Asiwaju’s enemies.

“Baba also said Paden’s book was a major slight and that they believed the President was aware of the content of the book before it went public. He further said some of the people around Buhari were hell-bent on ensuring that the President and Tinubu became enemies because of what they would gain from the crisis.”

The source stated that Buhari countered that he was unhappy with the acrimony in the ruling party and that he had tried to be fair to all parties. But Akande was said to have disagreed with the President in his response, and cited further examples.

SUNDAY PUNCH further gathered that Akande told the President to take practical steps to show that he was not fighting Tinubu and the South-West. While listing their demands, Akande and others told him that they needed to see more representation of those that helped him to power during the next cabinet reshuffle.

There have been reports that a cabinet change is imminent.

Akande, who travelled abroad after the meeting with Buhari, could not be reached for comments, but a top APC member close to him confirmed details of the meeting, saying, “They want Buhari to accept Tinubu’s list when he makes changes in his cabinet. They specifically told him that they are only in support of one of the South-West ministers in his cabinet. They also asked him to get the party leadership to hold the National Executive Council meetings regularly while also facilitating the constitution of the party’s board of trustees.”

A source close to the South-West leadership of the party disclosed to one of our correspondents that Akande and Aregbesola had met at the former’s residence in Ila-Orangun two Wednesdays ago before meeting the President.

Akande had been honoured by the Catholic Diocese in Otan-Ayegbaju, Osun State, where a school was inaugurated in his name. The late mother of a former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, who hailed from Otan-Ayegbaju, was also honoured by the church, which inaugurated a multipurpose hall in her honour.

APC leaders, members and supporters, including Aregbesola, who thronged the venue of the ceremony, accompanied Akande to Ila-Orangun as a mark of respect.

It was gathered that Aregbesola and Akande held a meeting at Akande’s residence, where they discussed the face-off between Buhari and Tinubu.

The source said, “We were at Otan-Ayegbaji together. We later accompanied Baba Akande to Ila-Orangun after the Otan-Ayegbaju ceremony. When we got to Ila-Orangun, both the governor and Baba Akande went inside for a very long time. I’m sure that was where the decision to intervene in the matter was taken.

“When they met Buhari, they complained about the marginalisation of Tinubu’s men. At the meeting, Aregbesola said they (Tinubu loyalists) were not out to fight Buhari, but that the President should consider the Tinubu group in terms of appointments.

“Buhari told them that he was not out to undermine Tinubu’s group and that things would change in the coming days.”

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in an interview with one of our correspondents, said he was not aware of what transpired during the meeting between the President and the APC chieftains.

He said, “I am not aware of what was discussed with the President in the said meeting. As a matter of fact, it is not the nature of the President to disclose what people discuss with him in confidence during meetings.”

APC Crisis: Buhari In Closed Door Meeting With Tinubu's Men
President Muhammadu Buhari, in a move to resolve the crises currently ravaging the All Progressives Congress, APC, met with some close associate of the party’s National Leader, Ahmed Bola Tinubu behind closed at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Buhari who returned from a three-day working visit to Germany over the weekend immediately went into the meeting with close associates of the former Lagos State governor, who included, former Interim National Chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande; Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola and Senator Sola Adeyeye from Osun Central.

APC has been in crises since the conduct of the Ondo State primary election that saw the emergence of former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu  as the party’s flag bearer in the November 26 governorship election in the state.

Following Akeredolu’s emergence, Tinubu had demanded the resignation  of the party’s National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun for allegedly overruling the party’s National Working Committee, NWC’s recommendation asking for the cancellation and conduct of a fresh primary poll  in the state.

Meanwhile, both Tinubu’s men and the President were said to have discussed the alleged strained relationship between Buhari and the APC National Leader and the internal wrangling within the ruling party in regards to the Ondo State election, Vanguard reports.

While Buhari was in Germany, his wife, Aisha had lamented that some people who did not work for the President’s emergence were occupying sensitive positions  .

Aisha’s comment was perceived in certain quarters to be referring to the apparent sidelining of Tinubu.

UNBELIEVABLE: Tinubu, Wife Split Over Ondo Gov. Race; Bisi Akande, Aregbesola Too Oppose Jagaban's Choice?
NEW TELEGRAPH - The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has split into five major political camps ahead of the August 27 governorship primaries in Ondo State. The election for Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s successor holds on November 26.

The arrowhead of one of the groups and probably the most formidable is the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has pitched his tent with Dr. Olusegun Abraham from Akoko North East Local Government.

The support given to Abraham by Tinubu has, however, led to sharp disagreement with the group headed by former Interim National Chairman of the APC and erstwhile governor of Osun State, Chief Adebisi Akande, who has thrown his weight behind the candidature of Prof. Ajayi Boroffice, the Senator representing Ondo North Senatorial district. Interestingly in the camp of Akande is Tinubu’s wife, Senator Remi, who is an unrepentant supporter of Boroffice.

Mrs. Tinubu addresses Boroffice as ‘My Governor’. Impeccable sources told New Telegraph that Tinubu, Akande and National Vice Chairman of the APC (South-West), Chief Pius Akinyelure, had in one of their meetings in London, agreed on Boroffice’s choice for Ondo governorship ticket until the trio disagreed and now sponsoring three different candidates for the election.

In a bid to pacify Tinubu to back down on his support for Abraham, a meeting was held in Bourdillon Road, the residence of the APC leader, at the weekend in Lagos. Tinubu, his wife and Boroffice were in attendance.

A source said that Tinubu reeled out a catalogue of allegations against Boroffice and why he is withdrawing his support. One of the issues raised is that Boroffice would turn out a “difficult governor” to relate with.

It was learnt that Borofmay fice denied all the allegations. Another formidable group is that of Abuja headed by Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasiru el-Rufai.

El-Rufai’s group is supporting former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and governorship candidate of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in 2012 election in the state, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN).

In the camp of el-Rufai are prominent ministers from the South-West and a minister from the South- South. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar is said to be sympathetic to this group.

New Telegraph learnt that the Abuja group is not in support of Boroffice because of the role he played during the party’s presidential primaries leading to the emergency of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari as the presidential candidate of the APC. Boroffice had supported former Kano State governor and now senator, Rabiu Kwankwaso, with the intention of being his running mate.

The fourth camp is that of Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State. Aregbesola is pushing for Chief Olusola Oke from Ilaje Local Government in Ondo South Senatorial District of the state. Aregbesola’s strategy is to pair his Special Adviser on Environment, Hon. Bola Ilori, with Oke, the former National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Oke’s albatross is that he is a new entrant to APC from the PDP.

New Telegraph learnt that Akinyelure is also supporting Mr. Boye Oyewumi, a new entrant into the political firmament of the state. Akinyelure has an alternative; Mr. Awodehin Akinsehinwa, popularly called Apata, from Owo Local Government Area of the state.

Although there are five major formidable groups contending for the sole ticket of the party, there also other splinter groups including that of Chief Segun Oni, erstwhile governor of Ekiti State and the Deputy National Chairman of APC who is supporting his godson, Prince Ademola Adegoroye from Akure in Ondo Central Senatorial District.

Another splinter group is the state chairman of APC, Hon. Isaacs Kekemeke who is supporting Dr. Bode Ayorinde, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ose/ Owo federal constituency. Despite the existence of the camps, the APC national secretariat cannot rein in the groups because of the weak national leadership of the party.

The camps within the party, New Telegraph learnt, are threatening the chances of the party at the polls as the groups that lost out in the party primaries may work against the interest of the candidate at the polls.

This development made the chairmen of APC in the 18 local government areas of the state to warn against the imposition of any candidate ahead of the primaries fixed for August 27.

The chairmen said the party would lose the November 26 governorship election in the state should they impose any candidate on the party as the people would prefer the ruling party in the state, the PDP, ahead of any imposed APC candidate.
