Nigeria Has Never Been This Divided Since Biafra War - Obasanjo Warns

buhari and obasanjo
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed concerned over the continued threats of disintegration resulting from the activities of armed groups in the different regions of the country.

Obasanjo said Nigeria has never been as divided in history, except for the country’s civil war period between 1967 and 1970.

Obasanjo who spoke yesterday at the maiden edition of the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ national summit held at Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, said the media should not fan the embers of disunity but rather take the lead in the marching towards greater national integration and development.

The former president, who was represented by Peter Okebukola, a professor lambasted those calling for the breakup of Nigeria, arguing that the activities of the Niger-Delta Avengers, Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen had fractured the country.

“At no time in our history, except probably during the civil war, has Nigeria been so fractured in the feeling of oneness and belongingness by the citizenry,” he noted.

“In the last four months, we have an average of twenty hotspots across the country with huge potential for national disintegration.”
He urged the media to support the efforts of government in fighting internal security challenges.

“The press should mobilise the masses to strengthen the democratic process and play a crucial role in promoting a culture of tolerance, non-violence and mutual co-existence,” he said.

“For me, this Summit will only be successful if we find a niche for the press in our march to ensuring greater national cohesion, especially at this time in our history,” he said.

“Our strength as a nation lies in our unity and national cohesion and I want to entreat you (the media) to begin to preach the gospel of unity in diversity and unity of purpose and cohesion.”

Obasanjo also charged the Nigerian media to pay close attention to investigative journalism, as most news headlines lacked credibility and were based on rumours.

“It is unacceptable that a number of media organisations place low premium on investigative journalism,” he said. “These days, many news items that are used as headlines lack credibility and are based on rumours.”

The Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, while declaring open the conference, said it was important for journalists as professionals to always be on guard against forces to take advantage of their power for selfish interest.

In his own remarks, Minister of Interior, Bello Dambazau said the power and significance of the media rest on their role of watchdog, stressing that the media through their reports help Nigerians in making informed decisions.

Buhari's Administration More Clueless Than Jonathan's - Kidnapped Chibok Girl Mother Blasts

Buhari's Administration More Clueless Than Jonathan's - Kidnapped Chibok Girl Mother Blasts
A mother of one of the abducted Chibok girls, Esther Yakubu, has described the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration as “more clueless than Jonathan’s government.”

Esther made the remark after sighting her daughter in the new video released by the Boko Haram insurgents demanding swap of their detained members with the Chibock girls.

The emotionally laden mother told the Punch, “The Chibok girls must be rescued, they must have their lives, the future that Boko Haram tries to truncate,” adding that Buhari’s administration was “more clueless than Jonathan’s.”

Boko Haram had in its new video use the girls who were abducted in 2014 from their dormitory in Chibok, Borno State as bait for the release of its members held in prisons across the country.

Speaking further, Esther said though she wanted the best educationally for her daughter, but regretted putting her in boarding school.

“I wanted her to have the best of education, I planned to sponsor her education to whatever level she wanted, but she could not sit for her final examinations because she was abducted.

“Boko Haram in the video asked the government to release their members so that they could release our girls. If the government knows that it cannot handle the insurgency, it should invite other countries. It is not a crime to seek assistance in a war. It is a shame for them to allow our daughters to languish in captivity for over two years.

“I don’t regret sending her to school, but I regret putting her in boarding school. If she was a day student, she would be home with me that night. The abduction affected her because she was in boarding school,” she said

Members of the #BringBackOurGirls (#BBOG) advocacy yesterday identified the Chibok girl who spoke on behalf of her mates in the Boko Haram video as Dorcas Yakubu.

Dorcas, who was abducted over two years ago with her school mates, was identified by a member of #BBOG and spokesperson of the Kibaku Area Development Association  (KADA) Dr. Allen Manaseh.

This was in the presence of her parents in Abuja.

The campaigners told reporters that the recognition of many of the girls leaves no room for doubt that they are the Chibok girls.

In a statement signed by leaders of the group, former Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili and Aisha Yesufu, the #BBOG said: “After listening to the call of Dorcas Yakubu, we demand an immediate, transparent, action and results-oriented response plan by the government.

RELEASED YESTERDAY BY BOKO HARAM
“Today, 853 days since the abduction of our #ChibokGirls, we woke up to a video on the state of our girls. We are left with mixed feelings of grief and strengthened hope as the chilling words continue to sink in.

They gave a direct translation of the Kibaku dialect spoken by the girl in the video as follows:

“Our parents please exercise patience. We are suffering here. There is no kind of suffering we haven’t seen. Our sisters are injured; some have wounds on their heads and bodies.

“Tell the government to give them their people so we can also come to be with you. We are all children and we don’t know what to do. The suffering is too much, please endeavour as we also have exercised patience.

“There is nothing you, or we can do about this but to get their people back to them, so we can go home. Exercise patience as we also have endured.”

The interpreter, Dr. Allen Manaseh, who is the Spokesman of the Kibaku Area Development Association (KADA) in Abuja, identified the speaker as Dorcas Yakubu, whose parents Esther and Yakubu live in the Abuja area. They were present at the conference.

Manaseh said: “Since we last met with the President in January, we have continued to call on him to be responsive to the needs of our Chibok parents, our movement, and the Global Community for timely updates on the rescue operation. In the aftermath of an earlier video, we repeatedly called for the Government to treat the information as the missing piece of “credible intelligence” it was seeking. Not even the return of Amina Ali a #ChibokGirl, inspired the sort of response we demanded.

“After listening to the call of Dorcas Yakubu, we demand an immediate, transparent, action and results-oriented response plan by the Government. We state categorically that the excuse of a split within the terrorists’ ranks or a period of validation of the authenticity of their claims will not suffice this time. We shall press these demands with a march to the Villa in the next few days.

“Nothing short of the Nigerian state being in contact with the parents, confirming identities of our girls, providing psychosocial support where necessary, and most importantly, articulating an action plan will be acceptable.

“Today, 28 months since the abduction, we call on the Governments of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, China, Australia, Israel, agencies like the United Nations and African Union, and all who previously expressed intentions to support the rescue efforts, to reengage and adopt a strategic rescue position. As global citizens, this is the least our #ChibokGirls deserve.

“We appeal to all citizens empathetic to the cause of our girls to hold them and their parents in prayers, and commit to joining our march to the Villa in the coming week. Our government, and the World, cannot continue to fail these innocent young women whose only crime is their decision to be educated. If we do, we would have failed to defend our civilization and shared humanity.”

26 Hard Facts Buhari Inherited Excessively Mismanaged, Plundered Nation From GEJ; PMB Transforming Nigeria, By Dr. Bunmi Awoyemi

THE HARD FACTS: PMB inherited an excessively mismanaged and plundered nation from PDP/GEJ and he is clinically and methodically transforming Nigeria.

You are entitled to your opinion which includes regretting that you asked people to vote for PMB. But I also have the right to my own opinion and I have the right to explain to you why I think you are wrong. The reason Nigeria is currently in the state in which it is are the seeds of bad governance, lack of planning and vision and corruption that characterized the PDP's governance of Nigeria for 16 unbroken years. PMB is cleaning up the mess created by 16 years of PDP rule.

THE HARD FACTS:

1. It was the PDP not PMB that ruled Nigeria for 16 years and never bothered to diversify the Nigerian economy

2. It was not PMB that squandered over 4 trillion naira on the alleged purchase of military equipment that was later found to have been embezzled by GEJ and his gang of rogues.

3. It was not PMB who allowed Boko Haram conquer 30% of Nigerian Territory within 4 years of the commencement of their insurgency, it was GEJ.

4. It was not PMB who squandered over $20b in the excess crude account. It was GEJ.

5. It was not PMB that allowed oil theft of over 500,000 barrels per day for 5 years at the rate of $50,000,000 per day when crude oil was selling for $100 per barrel, it was GEJ.

6. It was not PMB who was in charge of governance in Nigeria when the Chibok girls were kidnapped it was GEJ.

7. It was not PMB that was in charge for 16 years when the Nigeria's health care systems was allowed to degenerate to a comatose state it was the PDP.

8. It was not PMB that was in power for 16 years when over $54b was squandered on a so called power infrastructure development, it was the PDP.

9. It was not PMB that was in power when the the government failed to arm the armed forces with modern weapons and military hardware which gave insurgency a free ride, it was GEJ.

10. It was not PMB who watched and danced azonto and skelewu while over 25,000 Nigerians lost their lives to insurgency, it was GEJ.

11. It was not PMB that was in power when over 2,500,000 Nigerians were internally displaced by insurgency in their own country, it was GEJ.

12. It was not PMB that was in charge when over 30 people were killed at the NIS recruitment exercise of 2014 after over 600,000 unemployed graduates were charged N1k for the filling of 5k vacancies, it was GEJ.

13. It was not PMB that budgeted trillions of naira for capital projects to fix Federal Roads and the roads were still in a horrible state of disrepair 16 years after the people's votes wrested power from them. The trillions of naira ended up in the private bank accounts of PDP chieftains across Nigeria.

14. It was not under PMB that the rate of unemployment rose from 24% to 65% within 6 years. It happened under GEJ.

15. It was not under PMB that massive failures were recorded in NECO and WAEC exams in Nigeria it was under GEJ.

16. It was not under PMB that disobedience of court orders became the norm in government it was under the PDP.

17. It was not under PMB that Nigeria's Foreign Reserve crashed from over $60b in 2008 to $32b as of May 29th, 2015 when GEJ handed over power to PMB

18. It was not under PMB that the rate of crime in Nigeria rose astronomically, it was under GEJ.

19. It was not under PMB that the standard of education in Nigeria fell sharply, it was under GEJ.

20. It was not under PMB that the we had a Federal Ministry of Water Resources that produced zero water and failed to encourage private investment in water generation and distribution,it was under the PDP.

21. It was not under PMB that Nigeria's stature and status in the comity of nations became dwarfed and Nigeria become a pariah nation used as an example of corrupt nations, it was under GEJ.

22. It was not under PMB that strike actions by ASUU and ASUP became a recurring decimal in our educational sector for 16 years, it was under the PDP..

23. It was not under PMB that Nigeria lost N30 trillion to corruption at the federal level in just 5 years it was under GEJ.

24. It was not under PMB that the Nigerian treasury and the treasury of a political party became indistinguishable from each other because government funds were hijacked by the PDP and used for electioneering campaign while lots of people were wallowing in abject poverty.

25. It was not under the PMB that MEND whose insurgency shook Nigeria to its foundation was created and funded. It is widely acknowledged and alleged that some PDP Governors from the South South created and funded them before they got out of control. This happened under the watch of a PDP government at the centre.

26. It was not under the PMB that BOKO HARAM was allegedly created by some forces within the PDP as alleged by the late NSA General Azazi.
