Tuface Protest: APC, PDP Unites Against FG

Tuface Protest: APC, PDP Unites Against FG

Tuface
In an unusual and rare manner, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have united in voice by criticizing the move to stop a nationwide peaceful protest spearheaded by a pop musician, Tuface Idibia, billed to take place this weekend report according to ThisDay Newspaper suggests

The protest rally which is being planned to take place simultaneously in some major cities across the country, including Lagos State, Abuja and Asaba, is seen as an avenue provided  by the organisers to enable Nigerians voice out their worries over hardship in the land.

However, against the background of reports yesterday stating that police authorities in Lagos had warned that it might not allow the protest to hold, both the APC and PDP were in agreement on opposing the police move, saying it would amount to a breach of the constitution to carry out such an order.

The National Publicity Secretary of the  APC, Mallam Bolaji Abdulahi, said there was nothing wrong in people holding peaceful protest under a democracy, ThisDay Newspaper report

He said the party was not opposed to any form of expression of opposing view point by anyone so far it is done in a peaceful and non-violent manner and did not constitute disruption of public peace.

“For us, it is about the constitution of Nigeria, Tuface or any other citizen of the country has the right to stage a peaceful protest, that is the position of our constitution. We as a party will not be part of anything that will abridge or take away the right of citizens to protest, especially in a democracy.

The APC spokesman justified the party’s position by saying it would be wrong to stifle peaceful protest since APC benefitted from such citizen’s right to expression of dissent during its days as opposition party.

“We have as a party benefited greatly from citizen’s right to express their democratic rights and our being in government is not going to change that orientation to promote the liberties and right of citizen hold dessenting views,” he said.

On what the party would be advising the security forces and the organisers of the protest to do under the circumstances, the party spokesman said: “Well I don’t know exactly what the police are saying about banning the protest.  I think what the police will probably be saying is that they are concerned about the issue of safety and threat to lives and property in the course of the protest.

“There are always fears that hoodlums might hijack a peaceful protest and use the opportunity to perpetrate violence on innocent citizens. I suspect this might be the consideration of the police.  But this should not be good enough reason to deny citizens the full enjoyment of their constitutional rights however they wish to express them.”

Speaking on the motive of such protests and whether it  would  impact negatively on the image of the federal government controlled by his party, Abdullahi said: “ We believe that protests are a form of feedback, although we may not agree with the grievances but at same time, it may be an opportunity for us to communicate more about what we are doing that the citizens may have had sufficient information on. It may an opportunity for us to give better clarification on what our government is doing.

But fundamentally, it will be a form of feedback for us to do more in citizen’s engagement and enlightenment and to focus more on our commitment to the promises we made to our people. I do not see it as anything that is antithetical to our democracy.
But on its part, the PDP described the reported ban of the protest as an undemocratic act which should be resisted.

The PDP spokesman, Dayo Adeyeye, who spoke with THISDAY on the matter, urged the protesters to defy any such order by the police, adding that stopping people for engaging in peacefully assembly is not only undemocratic but against the spirit and letters of the country’s constitution.

“It is illegal and very undemocratic, the people have the right to protest, the freedom of assembly and freedom to protest are two strong ingredients of a democracy. In America, people have been protesting everywhere and nobody has made any effort to curtail it or to ban them or prevent them from holding.

“People have the rights to peaceful assembly and people had the right to protest under the previous regimes of Presidents Goodluck Jonathan, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Olusegun Obasanjo, how could these people now want to stop peaceful protest. These were the same people organising protests in those days against PDP governments.

“This shows clearly that we are now under a dictatorial regime. It is an illegal ban and I will urge the organisers of the protest to go ahead with it and defy the police ban because it is wrong.
In an effort to shore up, the federal government yesterday approved a new tax regime, just as it announced its intention to raise taxes on luxury goods.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) also approved the pursuit of an initiative to force down the prices of food in the country.
But the PDP spokesman reacted to the move to force down food prices as attempt to bring back an archaic economic policy that didn’t work many years ago.

“This is part of the archaic economic policies of President Muhammadu Buhari that he implemented during his first time in power as a military man. We are back to that again. It never worked  and can never work.

“We are not in a communist country, prices of goods should be determined by demand and supply, market forces simple. You cannot force it, there is no way to force it. So the Minister of Finance should be better educated, it will not work and the policy is dead on arrival. You cannot force me to sell at prices below my cost price,” he said.

Rivers Rerun: Gov. Wike's Leaked Audio Tape of Bribery And Threatening of INEC Officials Sparks Fresh Thong-War

Rivers Rerun: Gov. Wike's Leaked Audio Tape of Bribery And Threatening of INEC Officials Sparks Fresh Thong-War

Wike's Leaked Audio Tape of Bribery And Threatening of INEC Officials
Controversy has greeted a leaked audio recording in which a voice bearing a striking similarity with that of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, was heard admitting bribery and threatening to kill electoral officers in the December 10 rerun elections in Rivers State.

The All Progressives Congress on Thursday said the leaked audio recording confirmed its worst fears that the elections were rigged.

It noted that revelations contained in the said recording, made public by an online newspaper, Sahara Reporters, on Thursday, provided evidence of alleged unwholesome practices.

The party also said the audio recording was a pointer to the fact that the governor might have compromised the integrity of the electoral process and the integrity of his office as Chief Security Officer.

This was contained in a statement signed by the APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, in Abuja.

He said, “The leaked audio recording showing the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, admitting to bribing some electoral officials and threatening to kill them if his instructions were not followed, has confirmed the fears raised by the All Progressives Congress in the countdown to the recently conducted December 10, 2016, legislative rerun elections in the State.

“Going by the revelations from the leaked audio recording, it is obvious that Governor Wike might have engaged in unwholesome conducts that might have compromised the integrity of the electoral process and undermined his office as the Chief Security Officer of a state.

“The only logical conclusion from this, therefore, is that the electoral victories of the Peoples Democratic Party might have been achieved through underhand dealings and intimidation of officials.”

The statement recalled that the APC alerted security agencies to reports of massive arm build-up and sinister plots by Wike and the PDP.

It said, “On December 6, 2016, the APC alerted security agencies to reports of a massive arms build-up and other sinister plots that Wike and the PDP planned to execute on the day of the legislative rerun elections in Rivers State.

“Nigerians have watched with grave concern how the process of the just concluded legislative rerun elections has led to the deaths of ordinary citizens in the state, including security officers. The statement that Governor Wike appeared to have made on the record has now pointed directly at where responsibility should be placed for the violence that attended the election.”

The APC also argued that the audio recording provided evidence that the allegation by the Rivers State Government and the Peoples Democratic Party of an assassination threat on Wike and the allegation by Wike that APC governors funded violence in the state during the election might have been deliberately contrived to hide the role the governor played in the violence that attended the election.

It also urged security agencies to do the needful and ensure that the sponsors and perpetrators of violence, no matter how highly placed, were brought to justice.

But the Rivers State Government has denied the allegation that Wike threatened to kill an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Austin Tam-George, said on Thursday that the governor never made any contact with INEC officials in person or through the telephone.

Tam-George argued that the online outfit, Saharareporters.com, engaged in an audio impersonation of the governor, using a voice changer technology.

“We categorically deny these latest allegations as a sick fabrication, an outright lie. Governor Wike never made any contact with INEC officials in person or by telephone.

“Saharareporters.com is the online propaganda bullhorn of the All Progressives Congress. Their publications are typically false and the writers are professional hawkers of fiction.

“No one would have thought that the APC and its cowardly media allies would resort to an audio impersonation of Governor Nyesom Wike, using a voice changer technology.

“The voice changer technology is often used by teenagers mainly in South Korea and Japan to launch innocent technological pranks at each other, mainly for laughs.

“The APC and Saharareporters.com are inmates in the prison of their own lies. We reject the latest blackmail by the APC,” he added.

APC Picks Jonathan's Ex-Minister As New National Spokesman Today

Bolaji Abdullahi
A former Sports Minister under the former President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr. Bolaji Abdullahi will today be formalised as the new spokesman of the ruling All progressives Congress, APC, at a mini-convention scheduled  to hold at Abuja for the purpose, barring last minute change.

It was gathered that a former Sports Minister, Bolaji Abdullahi, from Kwara State, was being tipped for the job.

News Punch had since October 25th published that the ex-minister has been picked to replace Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who had resigned from the position to take a ministerial appointment from President Muhammadu Buhari's Government.

Bolaji Abdullahi, an indigene of Kwara State served as Minister of Sports under former President Goodluck Jonathan. He is also said to be a stooge to the Senate Presdent, Bukola Saraki.

The embattled Deputy National Publicity Secretary, of the party, Timi Frank, tried but failed to act in that capacity.

He has taken the party to court when it announced that he has been suspended.

It was however gathered that the leadership of the APC had concluded the plans to elect another spokesman from the North-Central geopolitical zone, with Kwara State emerging the preferred candidate.

The source said Abdullahi might emerge the new spokesman for the APC at a mini-convention expected to hold at the New Chelsea Hotel, Abuja at 11am.

It was also confirmed that delegates from only the six states of North-Central would attend the convention, while the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, members of the National Working Committee as well as governors from the states were billed to attend the convention.

Abdullahi, who is believed to be a loyalist of the senate president,  Dr Bukola Saraki would replace his Kwara kinsman, who is the Information and Culture minister,  Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on the National Executive Council (NEC) of the party, Guardian Newspaper reports

Mr. Abdullahi who joined the APC, alongside the Kwara State governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, in the build up to the 2015 poll was first appointed Minister of Youth Development in 2011 and later asked to supervise the Sports Ministry before he was appointed substantive minister of sports in May 2012.

Tt was gathered from a reliable source that Abdullahi’s appointment would be ratified at a zonal convention of the party in no distant time, adding that the party settled for him due to his pedigree as a former journalist and the fact that he hails from the same Kwara State as Lai Mohammed, Guardian Newspaper says

The source ruled out the possibility of convening a national convention of the party as canvassed by the deputy national publicity secretary of the party,  Mr Timi Frank.

Frank who had been having a running battle with the national chairman of the party,  chief John Odigie-Oyegun over the replacement of Lai Mohammed had maintained that APC NEC meeting was over due according to the party’s constitution, which states in article 25 b( i) that “the National Executive Committee shall meet every quarter and or at any time decided by the national chairman  or at the request made in writing by at least, two-third of the members of the National Executive Committee, provided that not less than fourteen (14) days notice is given for the meeting to be summoned.”

The APC spokesman also listed pending issues, which arose from the last NEC meeting, but were yet to be addressed as follows:

“It was agreed at the last meeting that there should be a mini- convention to fill some vacant positions of the National Working Committee (NWC), but nothing has been done almost six months after. The issue of Board of Trustees (BOT) is still pending and some other issues, including crisis all over the state, but the only thing our national chairman can do is to conduct primaries. As a governing party, I believe Nigerians expect more than this from us.”
