BREAKING: Saraki, Ekweremadu, Others Granted Bail

BREAKING: Saraki, Ekweremadu, Others Granted Bail

Justice Yusuf Halilu of a Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court, Abuja on Monday granted the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, former clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Salisu Maikasuwa bail.
Saraki, Ekweremadu, former clerk of the National Assembly, Salisu Maikasuwa and the Deputy Clerk, Benedict Efeturi are facing charges of alleged criminal conspiracy and forgery of the senate standing rule‎s, 2015. The charges were brought against them by the Federal Government.

The prosecutor, Joseph Daodu had filed an application before the Halilu-led court seeking that the accused persons be denied bail because they may tamper with the course of investigation and may likely jump bail.

But counsel to the first accused person, Salisu Maikasuwa, Ikechukwu Ezechukwu argued that there was need to admit his client bail because his client conducted himself properly all through the investigation.

He said, “All through his investigation, he was never detained, and he also made himself available for investigation.”

Ezechukwu urged the court to dismiss the application of the prosecution and grant his client bail on self recognition.

Counsel to the 3rd defendant, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Paul Erokoro, SAN, contended that the affidavits filed by the prosecution “never made mention of Saraki and the police in the course of its investigation and the police never invited him for questioning.

“It’s a fact that my client who has being standing trial at the CCT for more than one year will not run away.”

Erokoro prayed the court to admit Saraki bail on the ground of self recognition as he will not run away.

Diri, however, stated that the prosecution was not opposing the bail application of Saraki because it may affect his official duties as the Senate President.

He, however, opposed “vehemently” the bail application of the other accused persons because the “charges against them are devious which if they are convicted may attract a prison term of 14 years.”

Diri contended that others, apart from the Senate President if granted bail may evade trial.

On this ground, Diri urged the court to discountenance the bail application of the first, second and fourth defendant.

Justice Halilu in his ruling granted all accused persons bail.

“Considering the submission of the counsels of the accused person, I allow all the accused persons to go home.

“They shall present two reasonable surities who should be Nigerian, owned landed properties in Asokoro, maitama, Wuse 2 and Garki.

“If they fail to meet the bail condition, they shall be remanded in Kuje prison.”

The judge consequently adjourned the matter till July 11 for continuation of tria

BREAKING: Sheriff Incurs EFCC Invitation Over Diezani's Bribe For Election Spree
As if the recent unceremonious ouster from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party national Chairmanship, not enough, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has invited a factional Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, for questioning on the 2015 presidential campaign funds of the PDP an unconfirmed report by TheEagleOnline report suggests

Sheriff was believed to have benefitted from the funds released by the Presidency for the reelection bid of the then President Goodluck Jonathan.

News Punch has learnt from source that the EFCC, which has been inviting and retrieving huge sums voted for the 2015 presidential election from various political actors, asked Sheriff to report to its Borno State Office in Maiduguri. The invitation, it was gathered, was extended to Sheriff on Tuesday.

Our source revealed however that, there has been no official confirmation of the development by the EFCC.

But a top notch of the commission told our source that Sheriff is being expected at the Maiduguri office of the Commission.

This, the source explained, was because the funds so collected was picked up in Borno State.

Most of the funds traced to political gladiators involved in the presidential election had been picked up at the Fidelity Bank Plc branches in state capitals across the country.

The money has been traced to a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Deziani Alison-Madueke, who deposited $115 million in Fidelity Bank Plc, through its now sacked Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Nnamdi Okonkwo.

Th money was then changed into Naira for distribution to top chieftains of the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The former Borno governor currently battling his party to remain as chairman following his sack recently.

The former international football player and coach had lost his wife of 33 years, Kate, last year after a prolonged battle with cancer.

His death has been confirmed from a member of his family as well as one of his close associates according to TheCable

Keshi, the only Nigerian coach to have won the Africa Cup of Nations, achieved a rare feat in 2013 by becoming only the second person to win the trophy both as a player and a coach.
The only other person to have achieved the feat is Egypt’s Mahmoud El-Gohary.

He represented Nigeria from 1982, at age 20, till 1994, most of the time captaining the Super Eagles and scoring vital goals from his position as a central defender.

He also coached Togo and Nigeria at the World Cup, as well as Mali.

Keshi, nicknamed the “Big Boss” for his leadership skills, is the fifth member of the all-conquering 1994 team to die, following Uche Okafor, Thompson Oliha, Rashidi Yekini and Wilfred Agbonavbare.
