Group warns UNICAL Ex-Bursar to stop blackmailing constituted authority

A Civil society group, the Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJET)has warned those it said are attempting to destroy the peace at the University of Calabar to desist from doing so or risk being exposed.

The group accused the ex-bursar of the institution, Mr Peter Agi of being behind various attempts to blackmail the University's constituted authority after he was fired for alleged corruption.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja, CESJET Executive Director, Joyce Adamu said the ex-bursar should hide his face in shame after being disgraced for his numerous underhand dealings that took the righteous posture of the current Vice Chancellor and the Governing Council to expose.

She said there have recently been reports that some persons are mobilizing hoodlums for the purpose of posing as protesting students of the UNICAL to cause mayhem.

According to her, these fake protesters will then proceed to cause maximum damage to infrastructure at the university while also attacking the genuine students if they should dare question the destruction of their institution.

She said the plot may not be unconnected with the embattled former bursar of the university, Mr. Peter Agi, who has remained bitter after being relieved of his post over corruption related charges.

She said, "He is a confused man who has soiled his hands with public funds and afraid of approaching equity since his hands are clean.

He should face the Police in Calabar to explain his complicity in the criminal allegations leveled against him before a competent court.

"His recent attempt to blackmail the leadership of University to us is an attempt to divert attention from his unholy acts which set both students and members of the institution on a collision course with Mr. Agi's ego and penchant for mischief which is known everywhere in the University.

Christians-Muslims Forum Preaches Tolerance, Says Patriotism Is Key To Survival Of Our Nationhood

Christians-Muslims Forum Preaches Tolerance, Says Patriotism Is Key To Survival Of Our Nationhood

Youths from the two dominant religion in the country, Christianity and Islam have called for religious tolerance among the various religious groups in Nigeria, while also urging Nigerians to pray for the country and her leaders.'

This was the resolution reached by participants at the end of a joint session of Christian/Muslim Intellectual Forum (CMIF) organized by the Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJECT) in Abuja on Wednesday.

In a Communiqué issued at the end of the conference, the participants agreed to hold an inter faith praise concert to celebrate the achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari over some of the hydra headed monsters such as terrorism and corruption which confronted the nation before his ascension to power.

They also agreed to hold a prayer session to pray for the quick recovery of Mr. President to enable him continue his good works of rebuilding the nation.

The Communiqué was jointly signed by Rev. Steven Onwun Chairman, Communique Drafting Committee and Alhaji Garba Shehu Secretary and Patriot Dan Enyi

Member, Communique Drafting Committee.

The seminar witnessed participants and guest speakers painstakingly dissecting the concept of religion and its applicability in the context of Nigeria and resolved on a series of actions and measures to douse the unnecessary tensions and conflicts the practice of religion often impose in the country.

The CMIF said patriotism should instead become the new religion, emphasizing that henceforth, state interests and goals should be placed above religious inclinations of individuals.

According to the communique, the forum recognized the Constitutional freedom of Nigerians to the right of conscience and to subscribe to any religion of their choice and worship.

However, the participants bemoaned the frequent abuse of this liberty by some clerics and adherents and sued for restraint.

The communique reads in part, "The forum also reviewed and described as unhealthy the sustained frosty relationship between followers of different faiths and the need for internal soul-searching by adherents of the various faiths to evolve positive measures that would stimulate cordial and friendly inter-faith interface for peace, unity and harmonious co-existence in Nigeria.

"The young intellectuals of both faiths accepted and elected upon themselves to become vanguards and crusaders of mutual inter-faith relations in their respective communities and places of worship through enlightenment campaigns and conduct opposed to the exacerbation of religious issues/tensions throughout the country.

"The youths of Christianity and Islam in Nigeria agreed to start action to begin a joint annual national religious feast/carnival where worshippers of both faith would intermingle to collectively beseech God Almighty in prayers, songs and dances for the peace and development of Nigeria. The gathering will also offer a platform for interactions, dialogues and discussions of issues/problems afflicting the practice of both religions and proffer solutions. With time, the scope could be expanded to include quarterly joint conferences and seminars to discuss emerging religious issues, affairs or trends.
"The Muslim and Christian youths reached a consensus that henceforth matters of religion shall not reflect in our social interactions, workplace, homes and anywhere Nigerians converge. And that the practice of religion shall be perceived more as something very personal to the believer or worshipper and shall never be reason for strained relationships, unnecessary politicization and incitement to anarchy.

"The forum also condemned in strong terms the penchant of some clerics for hate speeches; inflammatory or inciting sermons and resolved from now onwards not to tolerate preachments. Instead, preachers who undermine the essence of love, peace and unity, which are the cardinal values of all religions shall be deserted."

The seminar drew participants and discussants from various Faith Based Organizations (FBOs), NGOs and CSOs. It also had six guest speakers invited from various Nigerian Universities who extensively discussed the negative effects of hate speeches and religions intolerance.

Hate Sermon:Urgent Need For Prayers and Understanding - Group Writes Open Letter, To Fr. Mbaka, TB Joshua, Others

  • The Spiritual Director, Adoration Ministry, Enugu State, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka,
  • The Founder, Synagogue Church Of All Nations, (SCOA) Pastor TB Joshua and
  • Other Anointed Men of God in Nigeria
The Topic; “Hate Sermons: Urgent Need For Prayers and Understanding,” In the Light of Prevailing Religious Tensions In Nigeria.

My Dearest Lordships;

1. We send you fraternal and warm greetings from our secretariat in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and pray Almighty God to keep blessing you with strength and wisdom as you serve the quest of Nigerians and the rest of mankind for salvation.

2. By way of brief introduction, Center For Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJECT) is a Non-governmental, Non-Profit, Non-partisan and Non-religious organization based in Nigeria. We are basically concerned with advocacy for social justice, equity and fairness as well as monitor ethics of transparency in public governance.'

3. We have observed with bewilderment recent events in our dear country, Nigeria and after a thorough analysis, we have come to the painful conclusion that current happenings in Nigeria are quite unpleasant. And there is the imperative for collective actions to nip in the bud, any possibility of potential mass conflicts and crisis likely to sprout from it.

4. My Lordships, you are already aware Nigeria is on the cliffhanger at the moment; burdened by agitations, mutual distrust and suspicions, viral criminality as well as crises of all dimensions, which in some cases, have mutated into violent conflicts.

5. The Federal Government of Nigeria led by President Muhammedu Buhari has been strained and overstretched in its attempts to contain the crises in different parts of the country in the face of dwindling economic fortunes. Therefore, we were perplexed to notice the infusion of a delicate and extremely sensitive issue like religion into the troubling afflictions of the country.

6. We consider it particularly very urgent to write you this open letter based on our understanding of your respectful status in Christendom in Nigeria. We are equally encouraged by our implied assumption that you are aware of certain supposed “Men of God” who have stoke the fire of discord and overheated the polity with bile sermons, utterances and discussions from the pulpit which have a strong potency to spark religious crisis of genocidal magnitude in Nigeria.

7. Initially, this organization was not too worried with the divisions publicly manifest in the disorderliness, in-fighting and leadership tussles which have characterized the Body of Christ in Nigeria in recent times. We had hoped the concerned leaders would devote time and energy to resolve these internal squabbles in the nearest future in the interest of Christianity.

8. But we cannot pretend not to know that this negative trend has not only spiraled outside of the Body of Christ in Nigeria, but pulling the strings very hard in attempts to destroy Nigeria by pitching members of one faith against another.

9. On the front burner of national issues today is the acerbic sermons and utterances credited to Apostle Johnson Suleiman of the Omega Ministries, which has generated very fearful and deadly interpretations between adherents of Christianity and Islam across the nooks and crannies of Nigeria. He is not alone in these hate and inciting sermons from the altar.

10. But Apostle Suleiman’s inciting comments happen to be the trouble at the moment. Initially, he opposed the Bill on prohibiting extreme religious views or preachments sponsored in Kaduna state and placed a curse of death on Governor Nasir el-Rufai. But it never bothered anybody because it had personal effect. But invoking the powers of God Almighty to herd Christians into killing and beheading all Fulani herdsmen at sight is not only ungodly, but mocks the thinking of orthodox Christianity and reflects more the thoughts and actions of Nigeria’s external enemies bent on destabilizing the country by causing crisis of genocidal proportion in Nigeria, worse than Somalia or Sudan. In his latest outing, we can see a nexus in his still opposition to the Bill.

11. Calling for the mass killings of members of an ethnic group- the Fulani herdsmen, who pasture their cattle because of the transgressions of a few criminals suspected to be their kinsmen, is tantamount to exterminating a whole race. This action would also be interpreted in Christian ethos as battling against flesh and blood, which true servants of God, (including you) have repeatedly warned us that we cannot win any war against the spirit.

12. Similarly, we deem it extremely bad faith the tendency of some anointed and venerated clergy, who are advocating for the extra-judicial killing of Boko Haram terrorists in the presumption that they launched war against Christianity. But the same Boko Haram insurgents also slaughtered fellow Muslims in their rage of raids. The bickering in the aftermath of the split in Boko Haram leadership between Abubakar Shekau and Abu Musab Al Barnewi sufficiently placed this notion in public domain. But in all, does it not betray the essence of being a good brother's keeper, love of neighbor and respect for sanctity of human life as decreed by God Almighty for anointed men of God to mount the pulpit to preach internecine wars with the religious card?

13. We believe Apostle Suleiman is acting the script of external enemies by inciting Christians in Nigeria into a religious war. And he goes further to blackmail the Federal Government into shielding himself by instigating Christians to perceive his impending arrest and interrogation by security agents to unearth the masked forces behind his actions as persecution of the church and Christians in Nigeria.

14. My Lordships, may you understand that it is germane for Apostle Suleiman and all other such “Men of God” to know they are not above laws of Nigeria and should be humble enough to submit themselves to security scrutiny. His confessions would either enable security agencies investigate and track people who are destabilization agents in Nigeria for external forces or exonerate him.

15. We plead your understanding in using your respected positions and statuses in talking to your congregations, adherents and followers not to be hoodwinked by the likes of Apostle Suleiman and such “Men of God” into deploying the anger they have deliberately instigated in Nigerian Christians to shield themselves from probe of their suspicious and ungodly acts.

16. We feel compelled to write you because of the respect, honour, integrity and acceptance you have earned amongst Christians and Muslims alike, within and outside Nigeria. We perceive in you, anointed men of God with the best credentials and wisdom to save the body of Christ at this crucial time on this sensitive, but potentially explosive religious incitement. We are further encouraged by your non- discriminatory roles as father to both the orphans, the vulnerable and the widows, much as banking on your vast knowledge of humanitarian complexities countries face when such religious matters are allowed to explode in violent clashes to promptly.

17. If you kindly devote attention to this cause, you would save Nigeria from a clearly masterminded plot to destroy our country by enemies waiting in the wings to fuel genocide in the country on the platform of religion. Acting thus, you shall also save the entire body of Christ from disintegrating and embarrassing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who laid down His life for us.

18. My Lordships’ would wish to remember that the break-up of Nigeria was predicted for 2015, but the Almighty God saw us through the trying times, but the same forces have not relented. Having studied the sociological psychology of Nigerians on religion, they have realized sparking a religions crisis would instantly actualize this prophesied break-up. The devil is surely at work and we must put on our shield of prayers and not guns to overcome this moment of torment to defeat the devil and his agents.

19. My Lordships, God Almighty has bestowed the onus of avoiding the looming calamity in the land in your hands, as His ordained servants. Please, do not let His children down, to inspire the Western world to laugh and mock us, by allowing the crisis to erupt. Your congregations and Nigerians indeed, listen and heed your words and advice, which beckons to your immediate intervention to save your dear country from ruination. It will be unfortunate if Christians allow themselves to be used as the vehicle for bloodshed that would lead to genocide, hunger and suffering of the ordinary masses of Nigeria who are already pauperized and burdened in several ways.

20. We appreciate you for the time you have spared in reading this open epistle and we pray that may Almighty God give you the wisdom, foresight and strength to keep serving him and humanity in His Grace to the best of your ability.

21. Thank you very much and May Almighty God continue to bless you, Christians and the Church in Nigeria.

CESJET Condemns Maiduguri Bomb Blasts, Urges Military Not To Be Deterred

CESJET Condemns Maiduguri Bomb Blasts, Urges Military Not To Be Deterred

CESJET
The Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency  (CESJET) has condemned Monday's suicide attack on a mosque at the University of Maiduguri in Borno state, describing it as desperation on the remnants of the Boko Haram terrorists to remain relevant.

CESJET in statement made available to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday by its Executive Secretary, Isaac Ikpa however urged the Army and other security agencies not be deterred but to redouble their efforts in ensuring that the remnants of the terrorists who fled the Sambisa forest are apprehended.

He said the attack was apparently orchestrated to be a major distraction to the ongoing operation to apprehend fleeing Boko Haram fighters and to create the impression that the group remains formidable even when the last of its known bases has been captured by the Nigerian Army.

He said, "As it was during the group's ascendancy to the basest form of evil, in its final decline Boko Haram remnants are again turning on a places of worship because they are no longer able to stage any daring attacks and must therefore seek soft targets. It speaks volumes that a group that had hinged its insurgency on a demand for the strict application of Sharia law could attack a mosque where Muslim worship.

"The haste with which some people gleefully used this attack to justify their claim that Boko Haram is undefeated calls for concerns as it appears that they were in agreement with the terrorists to strike so that they will have justification to continue insisting the terror group is still relevant.

"Boko Haram was never relevant and should be discussed only in context of what punishment is befitting for its members, their sponsors and sympathizers."

Ikpa therefore urged the military to remain focused, ignore distractions, and speed up its pursuit of these terrorists so that their capacity to attempt causing havoc in any part of the country.

He said the pursuit should be expanded to include identifying and prosecuting those that offer support to the terrorists as their crime is no lesser than those they empower to blow other Nigerians up.

According to him, Nigerians must remember that the key stopping these remnants of Boko Haram from regrouping remains vigilance, stressing that better results would be achieved if the nation act as one to rid the soceity of the last of these killers.

He said, "We cannot continue to present a divided front regardless of our religious, ethnic or geo-political differences. The security agencies and the military should be supported to succeed in fishing out those who  escaped from the various camps that were captured in Sambisa Forest.

"We appeal to the Federal Government to improve on intelligence gathering now that the war on terror is in a different phase following the defeat of Boko Haram."

Alleged Corruption: Right Group Exonerate JAMB Boss Of Wrongdoing

Alleged Corruption: Right Group Exonerate JAMB Boss Of Wrongdoing

Ishaq Oloyede
An Anti Corruption Group, CESJET has exonerated the registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede of any wrong doing in an alleged N2 billion fruad by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), describing it false.

Addressing journalists in Abuja CESJET Convener/Executive Secretary, Comrade Ikpa Isaac said the petition against Professor Oloyede signed by several ASUU officials including 49 Unilorin lecturers that were sacked for embarking on an illegal strike in 2001 when the JAMB Registrar was the institution's vice chancellor showed that it was self serving

It would be recalled that ASUU had last Decembet written a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against the Registrar of the JAMB, Prof. Isiaq Oloyede, accusing him of N2 billion naira fraud.

But the CESJET executive director said it is on record that JAMB has been firm about the admission processes since the new registrar came on board.

According to him, the Board has also taken a tough stance against the questionable courses that some lecturers have introduced without the necessary approvals.

He said while the group clearly supports the anti-corruption fight of President Muhammadu Buhari, said the anti corruption war must however not be trivialized or subjected to ridicule by being converted to a tool for settling personal scores, committing institutional blackmail or for extorting undeserved concessions.

He said, "We further have it on good authority that the union members are not comfortable with the reforms already being initiated by Professor Oloyede at JAMB since these changes would deprive some corrupt lecturers of the money they would have made from admission racketeering.

"The petition to the EFCC is therefore part of a wider plan to get rid of Professor Oloyede and reverse the gains that the Board has made. If the reforms he is implementing at the examination body are disrupted then the future of tertiary education in the country is in jeopardy. For us it would be a sad situation if unionists from a few universities can deprive other universities, polytechnics and colleges of education the opportunity to get quality candidates just for their own selfish gains.

"To the extent that all the allegations that ASUU and its officials have made against Professor Oloyede have been found to be false, malicious and mischievous we are calling on the union to without further delays tender an unreserved apology to the man."

Instead of maligning Professor Oloyede for his exemplary qualities the ASUU unionists would do well to emulate him and become better persons that can contribute to the nation in meaningful ways.

CESJET Commend Buhari Over Payment Of N5000 To Unemployed, Says best way to end indoctrination of youths
The Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJET) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari over the commencement of the payment of N5000 by the Federal Government to Nigerians living below poverty line.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja, CESJET Executive Director, Joyce Adamu said the implementation of the Conditional Cash Transfer programme is a further testament that President Muhammadu Buhari is a leader who keeps his promises having similarly began the N-Power project that is paying N30,000 monthly to enrolled graduates as well as the home-grown school feeding programme.

According to her, the various empowerment programmes introduced by the President Buhari led administration is the best way to end radicalization of youths by extremists groups.

Adamu also appealed to the President to issue a directive that the anti-fraud component of the Conditional Cash Transfer programme and the other initiatives are scaled up to check abuses.

According to her, it is unprecedented that 10,173 households are benefitting from this intervention that would make a difference in their quest to improve their standard of living.

She said, "The programme is a confirmation that the administration is committed to safeguarding the interest of the vulnerable in the society.

"As we salute this feat by Mr President, we see meaningful interventions like these by the federal government as going a long way to de-radicalize youths who fall pray to the wicked hands of terrorists and extremists who usually come from other parts of the world to indoctrinate them into ways that are alien to our culture and tradition as a people."

Speaking further, Adamu said, "Our view is that these programmes are too vital to the populace to be allowed to collapse owing to the capacity of corruption to derail them.

"We count it fortunate that the National Identity Number, BVN and other identity data bases are assets that can and must be deployed to ensure that the bloodsucking demons that had stolen even from pension funds using multiple or ghost accounts are not allow to repeat their trickery with these laudable programmes."

She urged Nigerians to engage in self policing and to be whistle blowers to expose officials or individuals that attempt to steal from the poor under any guise as any money stolen from the programme would amount to snatching food from the mouth of hungry children and condemning them to starvation.

"Law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies must treat any fraud uncovered around the conditional cash transfer programme as heinous crimes that must be prosecuted to conclusion," she said.

Right Group Urges Nigerians To Help Prevent Terrorists From regrouping

Right Group Urges Nigerians To Help Prevent Terrorists From regrouping

Following the defeat of Boko Haram terror group in the aftermath of the capture of Sambisa Forest, the Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJET) has called  on Nigerians to ensure that fleeing members of the terror sect are not allowed to regroup under any name just as no other extremist group is allowed to take up its place.

CESJET Executive Secretary, Comrade Ikpa Isaac in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja urged Nigerians to be their brother's keeper by reporting any suspicious movement of unknown persons to the police or other relevant security agencies.

He said given the desperation with which the terrorists sympathisers have tried to convince themselves that their fleeing members are potent, Nigerians must be cautious to help foil suicide bombers who he described as "lone wolf attacks by those who would rather kill themselves and take others with them.

Isaac also urged the security agencies not to spare any efforts at tracking down and apprehending the last of the fleeing terrorists.

He  commended the efforts of the Nigerian Army whose leadership from the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General TY Buratai to the last troop of Operation Lafiya Dole spent sleepless nights in the trenches to achieve the rare feat that has united Nigerians irrespective of political or ethnic affiliation.

He said, "We appeal to traditional leaders and religious leaders to see now as the moment to scale up the performance of their roles in ending the menace of terrorism which the Nigerian Army through a decisive leadership has brought to a halt in Nigeria.

"Even as we urge vigilance on the part of members of the public, it must be noted that membership of Boko Haram terror group is not written on the face as only security personnel are able to investigate and interrogate suspected persons to determine their culpability.

"Nigerians must therefore not hide under the cover of suspected Boko Haram membership or affiliation to lynch anyone or dispense mob justice. Anyone suspected of being a fleeing Boko Haram member must be handed over to the police.

"We further appeal to social commentators, especially the online community, to make analysis based on fact and to be wary of amplifying alarmist views aimed at sustaining a regime of fear in the heart of citizens. There is nothing to be gained from helping defeated terrorists to achieve the campaign of fear at which they had failed woefully in the past.

He also called on the government to collaborate with foreign security agenciesto ensure that terrorists who may have fled the country are apprehended.

He said, "CESJET urges the Federal Government not to slow down activities geared towards the total eradication of terrorism simply on account of the capture of Sambisa Forest and the defeat of boko Haram noting that the inertia of 2009 after the death of Boko Haram founder, Muhammed Yusuf, allowed members of the sect to flee to other countries where they got training and were further radicalised. It is on this account that any escaping terrorists must be apprehended before they exit the boundaries of Nigeria.

"We further underscore the importance of activating the necessary international instrument necessary to go after any known Boko Haram suspect in other countries. This terror group is a cancer that must be excised to its very roots."

Human Rights Group Wants IMN Designated A Terrorist Organizations
A human rights group, Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJET) has called on the United Nation mission in Nigeria to prevail on the United Nations General Assembly to designate the IMN as a terrorist organization.

The right group described the penchant of the IMN to attack security agents and destruction of lives and properties as similar to a terrorist organizations.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, Executive Secretary Comrade Ikpa Isaac, urged the UN to quickly intervene on the incessant attacks on police and other security agencies by members of the Shiite movement also known as

According to him, the numerous atrocities being committed by the IMN against the Nigerian state can no longer be ignored by the world.

He said, "It is now obvious that the recent clash in Kano where the sect had the boldness to open fire on innocent Nigerians is a clear indication that they are anarchists who may soon declare their own version of Islamic State."

Speaking further, he said "even as we wait for international community to act, we call on the Federal Government to arrest the leaders of the sect found to have been behind the Zaria protest and should subsequently be prosecuted as warning that the life of every single policeman in Nigeria counts."

He called on Nigerians both at home and in the diasporas to come out en mass to condemn what it described as the new low that the IMN has sunken to.

Isaac said the silence of Nigerians and the international community over the conspiracy of IMN and the Iranian authorities against constituted authority in Nigeria is no longer golden.

It described the incessant attacks on police by members of the INN as sad, adding that the avoidable loss of any human life diminishes our humanity irrespective of whether they are fanatics or not.

He said, "in this case, not only did IMN members embarked on what amounted to induced suicide they also saw to it that they killed policemen drafted to keep the peace."

He expressed the group's condolences to the families of the deceased policemen, saying, "we pray that God consoles those they left behind particularly dependents who now have to go through life without the support of their breadwinners."

He commended in strongest terms possible condemn "the unwarranted attack on policemen that were drafted to contain the IMN protests that was reportedly held as a cover to forment trouble."

He said, "The attack is an attack just not on the Nigeria Police but on every law abiding citizen of this country who now feel threatened by a rampaging sect that has continued to place its stamp of lawlessness on several of our major cities. The police were reportedly drafted to that protest upon receipt of intelligence that the protest was meant to be bloody and it turned out to be just that.

"One can only shudder at the thought of what would have happened at the protest had the police not been present to maintain the peace. At the risk of sounding judgemental, the outcome would have been a repeat of the past when IMN members use their various processions to inflict untold hardship on other citizens – considering that they had the dark intention of causing violence, the absence of the police would have led to persons of other sects and faiths being massacred in their scores.

According to him, the Kano incident marks an escalation in the pace with which the Shiite group is challenging the Nigerian state, saying they had repeatedly taken on the military, including instances during which they killed military personnel.

He said, "As we have seen in the aftermath of the Kano incident, IMN has launched a propaganda blitz with which it is presenting as the victim instead of the aggressor. It has started a campaign of making policemen that were on official duty to appear like criminals and murderers. This absurdity would only stand for as long as Nigerians delay in calling IMN to order."

Nigerian Governors Responsible For National Failure - CESJET

Nigerian Governors Responsible For National Failure - CESJET

Governors
The obvious national failure in virtually all facets has been attributed to the poor performance of all Nigerian Governors, the Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJET), has said

CESJET in a Press Statement this afternoon and made available to News Punch observed that with concern the growing trend whereby state governors abandon their mandate in pursuit of ventures that have no bearing on what they were elected to do. This trend has resulted in an obvious failing of governance, worsened the economy of the country at large and has created the risk of a citizens' uprising if not immediately addressed.

The centre believes that this trend came about because the governors have a poor understanding their roles, which is why they spend more time out all the 36 governors, irrespective of party affiliations, are guilty of non-performance in this regard. It is pertinent that they immediately retrace their steps if they want to regain relevance in the country.

A situation where they persist in this no performance and exploiting the poor understanding of the responsibilities of the three tiers of government on the part of the citizens to cover up for their failings cannot continue indefinitely. The fact that Nigerians blame either the federal or local government is no license to continue fooling the populace.

The state governors have reduced themselves to fulfilling the roles that would have been expected of local government chairmen while leaving the issue of their people's economic empowerment to the federal government knowing fully well that it is their responsibility.

Their excuse that states are broke is untenable since they are still able to undertake expensive foreign trips at the expense of their respective states. The claim that the states are broke would be acceptable if they can prove that they are no longer able to fuel their convoys from their states' capitals to Abuja. But to the extent that they can afford expensive flight tickets and extotic hotels abroad they must stop lying that their states are broke.

We therefore challenge the governors to tell their citizens what cost cutting measures they have implemented since the recession was declared. They must also prove the result that such cost cutting measures have yielded. We make these demands because we know that not only have the governors been lazy in coming up with winning economic ideas to turn their states around, they have also been wasteful even in the management of funds designated as bailout intervention by the federal government.

It is depressing that governors are continue to live lives of opulence while the long suffering people that elected them are wallowing in bitter poverty that they have no hope of exiting if the states continue to operate like casinos and ATMs for the ruling class.

We advise the governors to take heed and return to fulfilling the mandate for which they were elected as the growing hardship and discontent in the land will consume them first if the people do not immediately begin to see a seriousness to turn the situation around on their part.
