Chibok Girls: Group Urges Military Not To Relent

Chibok Girls: Group Urges Military Not To Relent
Following the release of 21 of the Chibok girls, the Global Excellence Foundation (GEF) has challenged the Nigerian military to build on the current success in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgency and ensure that every Nigerian held captive by the terrorist group is freed.

Addressing a press conference on Sunday, country Director of GEF, Professor Ola Yemi said there are people that are still held by Boko Haram that are not known to the public because they do not enjoy the kind of media attention like the Chibok girls.

While commending President Muhammadu Buhari for beginning to fulfil this specific campaign promise of securing the release of the girls who were abducted long before he came into office, Yemi reserved special praise for the gallantry of the Nigerian military.

He said Nigeria's military have proven to the world that terrorism can be defeated with the right approach and a determination to place national interest above all other narrow considerations.

According to him, at the time the girls were abducted no one dared think the girls would be released by the terrorists in this manner, adding that a degradation of Boko Haram's fighting capabilities has however ensured that they are releasing their captives as part of their acceptance of talks with the government.

He said, "we however want to appeal to the military to remain focused on neutralising the threat posed by unrepentant Boko Haram terrorist - those that have refused being part of the ongoing talks with the government. The ongoing negotiations must not be allowed to become a cover for those that are patently evil to regroup while we are rejoicing at the release of the captive girls.

"The reality is that the insurgency is not over until the last of the hardened terrorists has given up their weapons. Our challenge therefore is for the military to remain focused as victory is not secured until all is over.

"The military must, under the current development, reassess its promise to rescue the last person held hostage by the terrorist. We say this because there are people that are still held by Boko Haram that are not known to the public because they do not enjoy the kind of media attention around the released girls.

"This will be consistent with the more than 5000 persons troops have freed from Boko Haram’s captivity

Meanwhile, we want to appeal to the wife of the president, Mrs Aisha Buhari to galvanise women support for her husband. Her recent interview in which she alluded to withdrawing support for President Buhari in 2019 is a distraction that is not needed at this moment. The hectic fallout from her interview detracted from the joy the girls’ release."

Chibok 21: Group Commends The FG, Military; Wants Sunday, Friday as Thanksgiving Day
The National Inter-Faith and Religious Organisation of Nigeria for Peace has commended the Federal Government, especially the gallant Nigerian Military over it role played in the released of 21 Chibok girls held captive by Boko Haram for years.

The group has also called on Christian and Muslim faithful in the country to use this Sunday and Friday and offer thanksgiving for the release of the 21 Chibok girls.

The National Coordinator of the group, Bishop Musa Fomson while addressing journalists in Abuja today urged Nigerians to also pray to God to help bring the Boko Haram terrorism and all other forms of insurgency to an end in Nigeria.

Fonsom who is also the General Overseer of Spring of Life Assembly
said though more of the girls remain in captivity but the freedom of this first batch to be released has awakened hope.

He said, "We should pray for God to touch and soften the heart of those holding the remaining girls to also release them unhurt to their families."

"Our belief is that whatever efforts we make as humans it will make tremendous impact when we commit them to God. We must thus unite our faiths in making supplications to God for the safe return of the remaining school girls.

"Our hope is that this development marks the start of national healing. We understand how the collective anguish over the girls’ abduction led to tempers flaring up across various divides. A lot of hurt was felt, not just by the biological parents or guardians of the students but parents across the land.

"The lesson for all of us is that progress was made when we ceased hostility towards each other. A breakthrough came when President Buhari was allowed to focus on delivering on his promise to bring back the girls. Talks that made it possible for the girls to be released held only after the military recorded successes against the terrorists."

Fomson commended the federal government for the care and intervention they are providing for the girls, stressing that the team of medical doctors, psychologists, social workers, trauma experts and other professionals put at their disposal is a testament to the fact that a holistic approach is being adopted in their case.

He said "We salute the military and troops that made sacrifices that ensured that Boko Haram terrorists saw the folly of continuing to bear arms against the Nigerian state. The degrading of the terrorists' capabilities was definitely instrumental to their agreeing to seek peace with the release of the girls.

"Our appeal is that the euphoria of this development is not allowed to detract from the reality that there are other girls, children and women in IDPs camps, who must also be rehabilitated. They too have had traumatic experience. "

He acknowledged the efforts and contributions by the wife of Mr President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, who has made several interventions at various IDPs Camps.

According to him, She also did not give up on providing succour to Chibok parents, saying her support for the President has helped to achieve the rare feat of freeing the first set of girl.

He said, "We urge her not to relent her efforts in pushing for the release of other in her capacity as a mother and a woman."

THE UNTOLD: How FG Actually Struck The Secret Deal To Free 21 Chibok Girls
Premium Times - The release of 21 Chibok girls by the terrorist Boko Haram group Thursday was the culmination of more than two years of negotiation and perseverance by a team which first assembled about two years ago, PREMIUM TIMES can report.

The key actors who first initiated the process made their initial attempt to rescue the girls around July 2014, during the Goodluck Jonathan administration, but that effort floundered in the last minutes, PREMIUM TIMES learnt.

The initial team comprised Shehu Sani, now a senator; rights activist, Fred Eno; a lawyer, Mustapha Zanna; the Nigerian Army, then led by Kenneth Minimah; the Swiss government; and the International Committee of the Red Cross, which was called in to play a neutral intermediary role.

Mr. Sani, the sources said, began the process when he reached out to the Swiss Government through its Embassy in Nigeria and then linked them to Mr. Zanah who in turn connected the Swiss authorities and the International Committee of the Red Cross with the leadership of Boko Haram.

Mr. Jonathan appointed elder statesman, Edwin Clark, to liaise with the team and government.

After a few weeks of work, the team nearly secured the release of the girls in 2014.

Highly placed sources familiar with the negotiation told PREMIUM TIMES at the time that the deal fell through due to the clumsy manner in which the Jonathan administration handled it.

“It boils down, basically, to three key issues: inflexibility and lack of realism on the part of the insurgent forces; lack of support for a negotiated settlement to the insurgency on the part of security forces; and what appears to be government’s acceptance that the security forces were right,” the sources said.

“The president desperately wanted the girls released, but politics of positioning stood in the way of progress,” Mr. Eno told PREMIUM TIMES at the time.

After the initial effort failed, according to our sources, Messrs Sani, Eno and Clark moved on to other things.

But other members of the team remained tenacious and kept exploring available options for the release of the girls, this newspaper learnt.

The State Security Service (SSS) led the fresh negotiation with the team using the existing line of dialogue established in 2014.

The Nigerian military was left out of the initial negotiation after the Boko Haram leadership reportedly insisted it would have nothing with an organisation that had been killing its members, and had killed some of the Chibok girls in aerial bombardments.

PREMIUM TIMES learnt that the SSS was therefore enlisted to lead the negotiation, gather intelligence regarding the reliability of the release window and provide other support services essential to the operation.

After a deal had been struck, the Red Cross was called in to meet the leadership of the sect as well as sight the girls.

A date and location was then agreed for the release of the girls.

On Wednesday, October 14, the military was contacted to deploy some of its men to a particular location in Banki, a border town in Bama local government area of Borno State, to pick up the 21 girls, officials said.

The girls were released at 5:30 am on Thursday and immediately flown to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, in a chopper.

The Nigerian government announced the release of the girls on Thursday morning, hours after they were successfully received from insurgents in the highly confidential operation.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, dismissed reports that the girls were rescued in exchange for top-level suspected Boko Haram detainees across the country.'

The release was a “product of painstaking negotiations and trust on both sides,” Mr. Mohammed said at a world press conference Thursday afternoon. “Please note that this is not a swap. It is a release.”

Mr. Mohammed’s comments that the girls were not released based on a prisoner swap deal immediately sparked speculation that the government may have paid ransom.

However, presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina, denied that any ransom was paid.

Mr. Buhari had repeatedly stated his willingness to rescue the girls even if it required swapping them with suspected terrorists in custody.

A government source said negotiations for the release of the remaining girls was continuing

Presidential Spokesman Garba Shehu, in a statement, said: “The release of the girls, in a limited number is the outcome of negotiations between the administration and the the Boko Haram brokered by the International Red Cross and the Swiss government. The negotiations will continue.

“The President welcomes the release of the girls but cautioned Nigerians to be mindful of the fact that more than 30,000 fellow citizens were killed via terrorism.

Explaining how they were released, Alhaji Mohammed said: “We can confirm that 21 of the girls were released, safely, to us by 5.30 this Thursday morning and they were flown to Kaduna from the location of their release. This is the most glaring manifestation to date of the unwavering commitment of Mr. President to secure the safe release of the girls and reunite them with their families.

“It is also a result of the round-the-clock efforts by the Administration to put a closure to the sad issue of the kidnap of the girls.”

Mohammed gave insights into how the girls were released.

He added: “Gentlemen, as we have always said, we have been working on the safe release of the girls and following all the leads available. In this instance, the moment we had a credible lead, Mr President gave the green-light to the DSS to pursue it.

“We can confirm that the DSS pursued the lead in collaboration with a friendly European country and a renowned international humanitarian organization. The DSS was supported by the military.

“As soon as the necessary confidence was built on both sides, the parties agreed on the date and the location of the release of the 21 girls. Please note that this is not a swap. It is a release, the product of painstaking negotiations and trust on both sides.

“We see this as a credible first step in the eventual release of all the Chibok Girls in captivity. It is also a major step in confidence-building between us as a government and the Boko Haram leadership on the issue of the Chibok Girls.

“We want to thank all Nigerians for their support and for never losing confidence in the ability of Mr. President to secure the safe release of our Chibok Girls.”

The minister said the release of the girls could mean a new phase to the conduct of the war against terrorism

He added: “Whatever it will take to get Boko Haram insurgency under control, we will do it through military operation, peace talk, dialogue and whatever. I think all in all, when you are fighting insurgency, it is a combination of carrot and stick. The Federal Government will continue to adopt carrot and stick approach.

“The release of 21 out of the Chibok girls does not mean the end of military operation it could mean a new phase to the conduct of the war against terrorism.

“These negotiations are very delicate bearing in mind that we still have more girls in captivity we must not do anything to jeopardize their release.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has made it clear that what it will take to get the girls in captivity from the Boko Haram insurgents we will do it.

“We have always been looking for leads. This time around, we were able to have a credible lead.”

On the insinuations that some members of Boko Haram were swapped to secure the release of the girls, the minister responded: “That is not true.”

“If you listen, I said this particular release is significant because it is a first step in what we believe will lead to the eventual release of all our girls in custody.

“And it is significant also because we have been able to establish ever than before a kind of confidence in the core leadership of Boko Haram and Nigerians.  And I am not aware of any monetary transactions.

“This is not a swap. This was a release effected because over time we succeeded in confidence building.  This is unique because we also used friendly approach and friendly organization and friendly countries.  I repeat this is not a swap.”

He expressed confidence that the government will work towards the release of other girls in Boko Haram custody.

“This particular release is significant because it is just a first step in what we believe will eventually lead to release of other girls in custody.

“The Federal Government will not relent until the whole girls gain total freedom,” he said

How FG, UN Secured Freedom For The 21 Chibok Girls Last Night
Premium Times - The Nigerian government has given an insight into the negotiations that led to the release of 21 Chibok school girls.

A confirmation the girls had been freed came Thursday morning.

The girls –nearly 300 – were abducted by the extremist sect Boko Haram on April 14, 2014, from a secondary school in Chibok.

Some 50 of the girls managed to escape and about 218 of them are still missing.

Previous efforts by two Nigerian administrations to free the girls were not successful.

The latest success came after the intervention of the Red Cross and the Swiss government.

“The release of the girls, in a limited number is the outcome of negotiations between the administration and the Boko Haram brokered by the International Red Cross and the Swiss government,” a statement issued by presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, said.
He said the talks will continue.

Separately, officials briefed about the deal told PREMIUM TIMES that the girls were swapped for four Boko Haram insurgents. Names of the militants were not released.

Boko Haram demanded the release of its members held by the government, as condition for freeing the girls.

The officials told PREMIUM TIMES that the exchange took place Wednesday night when Nigerian military officials, alongside personnel of United Nations, Red Cross and National Emergency Management Agency, conveyed four Boko Haram militants by a chopper to Banki, a border town in Bama local government area of Borno State.

There, 21 released girls were picked up. The girls were brought into Maiduguri Air Force base at about 8.30a.m.

A source said most of the girls had babies.

They were immediately flown to Abuja at 9a.m.

Many residents of Maiduguri were woken by the sounds of aircraft hovering in the air Thursday morning.
