Dino Melaye Certificate scandal: See 7 Incontrovertible Facts That Nailed The Senator

Dino Melaye Certificate scandal: See 7 Incontrovertible Facts That Nailed The Senator

Dino Melaye
The embattled Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye was on Monday 27 cleared by Vice Chancellor, Ahamadu Bello University, Prof Ibrahim Garba on certificate and graduation controversies.

The Senator has since slammed a N5billion legal suit against SaharaReporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore.

But despite Dino’s clearance by ABU VC, criticisms have continued to gather momentum as to the authenticity of his certificate.

In reaction, a Facebook user, The truth said: “Dino has dug his own grave, and only him shall be buried inside it. Omoyele Sowore does not go to press with gibberish and balderdash. He seeks neither fame nor wealth. And while he may not have 100 percent credibility in all situations, he surely has some concrete proofs at his disposal whenever he takes on anyone.

Here are 7 incontrovertible facts that nailed Dino Melaye:

1. Inconsistencies in his names

What exactly are the names of Mr. Melaye? There are five possibilities for this:

  • Daniel Jonah Melaye (This was on his statement of results issued by ABU and signed Feb 3, 2000);
  • - Melaye Daniel (NYSC certificate, July 8th, 2001); .
  • - Daniel Dino Melaye (Diploma certificate from UNIJOS, Aug 3, 2006);
  • - Melaye Daniel Jonah O (SSCE Certificate, 1992};
  • - Dino Melaye (Official name, NASS website).
  • - Dino, what exactly is your name and how did you come about changing your names 5 times!

2. Harvard and LSE
In a video that went viral, Dino claimed that he holds a degree certificate from Harvard University and London school of Economics and political science respectively. However, in an email letter to Sahara Reporters, both institutions denied ever admitting any student by the name Melaye not to talk of graduating same.

3. Ghost graduand
Sahara Reporters published the list of ABU 99 set with Dino Melaye's name conspicuously missing. Who graduates from a University but does not make the graduating list?

4. No show on the alumni site
I have personally tried to search for Dino Melaye's name on the ABU alumni site to no avail. I have typed all of his names and their variants; nothing came up. I have also typed each of his names separately, still, no show. How is that possible?

5. Deficiencies in O level certificate
Sahara Reporters revealed that in his SSCE which he sat for in 1992, Dino Melaye had only 3 credits in the following subjects: Agric, CRK and Biology. Now, the question is, how did he gain admission into ABU in spite of scoring P8 in core subjects (Maths, English and even geography)?

6. B.A. Geography?
A dig into ABU's website revealed that the department of Geography was once in the faculty of Arts before it was later added to the faculty of Sciences. However, Dino's statement of results leaves more questions than answers. For instance, between 1973 and 2011,the department graduated the following students with BSc in Geography:

  • -Bawa Jonah Seth Besanhi (BSc Geography; graduated in 1973);
  • - Abin Daniel John (BSc Geography; graduated in 1978);
  • -Dada Daniel Adefila (BSc Geography; graduated in 1979)
  • -Beshiru Daniel (BSc Geography; graduated in 1980);
  • -Daniel Bosede Biddy (BSc Geography graduated in 1983);
  • -Atenji Daniel E. (BSc Geography; graduated in 1986);
  • -Ndasala Jonah (BSc Geography; graduate in 1987).
  • -Birga Jonah (BSc Geography; graduated in 2007);
  • -Kaigama Jonah Ishaku (BSc Geography; graduated in 2011).

So where did Dino who graduated in 1999 get his B.A. result?

7. Conflicting dates on the statement of results
At least, Dino Melaye's statement of results has 3 different dates: on the top right corner of the paper is 26th June, 2000; somewhere in the middle is 3rd February, 2000 and down left is 22nd September, 2010. What happened? Dino, if you find yourself in a pit, stop digging. This is your Waterloo. We are keenly watching.

ABU Certificate Fraud: Melaye's Name MISSING On Graduation Brochure As Multiple Whistle-blowers Fault VC's Claim

ABU Certificate Fraud: Melaye's Name MISSING On Graduation Brochure As Multiple Whistle-blowers Fault VC's Claim

Sahara Reporters - A combination of Examination of Officers and Librarians at Ahmadu Bello University on Monday repudiated claims by the university's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibrahim Garba during his appearance before the Nigeria Senate Ethics Committee that Senator Dino Melaye graduated from the University.

Shortly after the Senate committee ended the carefully choreographed hearing, more documents from the university, including the Joint Convocation Brochure, surfaced.

Saharareporters was first to release Mr. Melaye's 400 level statement of results last week, where we revealed that unscrupulous professors at the Geography Department manipulated and forged school records to help Melaye "graduate."

It has now been revealed that despite efforts by those professors to get away with the crime of forgery, they were still stuck during Mr. Melaye's final year, unable help him graduate because he could not pass Geography 307 Long Field Trip, a compulsory course required for graduation. A copy of the department handbook made available to SaharaReporters shows that Geography 307 was a compulsory course that couldn't have been waived.

What the late Professor D. O. Ogbonna did was to add 2-course units to Melaye's Total Earned Course Units without recourse to the teacher, Dr. A.L. Bello, who was the supervisor of the course.

SaharaReporters further learnt that after a major academic scandal broke out in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Ogbonna was quietly eased out of ABU, along with some other professors who had engaged in grade inflation.  The university allowed Ogbonna to retire and he found another job in Kogi state University, Melaye’s home state, before he died a few years ago of an undisclosed illness.

Several lecturers who reached out Saharareporters after the VC gave his testimony today said the VC had in the past week been coming to them to force the department to endorse Melaye's graduation, but that they explained to him that they could not sustain a public declaration based on their records.  According to the lecturers, the Vice Chancellor then took the tainted 400 L third semester results with him to Abuja before the Senate.

As soon as the VC declared that Mr. Melaye did graduate, a copy of the Joint Convocation brochure, with pages related to the Bachelors of Arts in Geography was also sent to Saharareporters, with the Senator’s name clearly absent.  A source at the university told SaharaReporters that there was sufficient time for Mr. Melaye's name to have appeared in the Brochure as the excuse of a printer devil or university crises on campuses could not explain away the obvious fact, during the convocation two sets of graduates from two academic sessions were merged together. Convocation took place in the year 2002, two solid years after Melaye reportedly graduated from ABU, but his name was absent from the brochure.  His name was also absent from the Alumni directory of ABU.

Apart from the scandal concerning whether or not he graduated from ABU, Mr. Melaye also claimed that he graduated from Harvard and the London School of Economics, claims that have now been debunked by the two renowned institutions.

A diploma Melaye said he received from the University of Jos is also suspect as the Examinations Officers there said they never prepared transcripts him because of [his] course deficits.

Mr. Melaye also claims he graduated from the University of Abuja and has done two higher degrees at ABU. Those claims fly in the face of the fraud associated with his academic background, as Mr. Melaye's classmates who reached out to Saharareporters after the scandal broke said he spent at least 7-8 years studying at ABU before he left under questionable circumstances, unable to fulfill his course work.

Melaye Multiple Certificate SCANDAL: At last UNIABUJA Vice Chancellor BREAKS Silence

Melaye Multiple Certificate SCANDAL: At last UNIABUJA Vice Chancellor BREAKS Silence

DINO MELAYE
Multiple The certificate scandals rocking Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi has finally attracted the attention of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Michael Adikwu.

Dino Melaye had also claimed he earned a degree from University of Abuja aside the Ahmadu Bello University's and several other degree now questionable.

An online new medium Sahara report has raised alarmed that the ABU degree certificate of Melaye could be fake as the Senator reportedly did not graduate from the university

The Vice Chancellor of UNIABUJA, Prof. Michael Adikwu, according to Punch Newspaper said; “Issues of certificates should be directed to the registry. I heard that (allegation against Dino Melaye) also, but I will find out later.”

Meanwhile, The certificate forgery scandal rocking the senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye took a messy dimension on SUNDAY as fresh report according to Punch Newspaper suggests his name is not on the Ahmadu Bello University alumni website.

Sahara Reporters, an online news medium, has claimed the senator did not graduate from ABU for his first degree. a claim Melaye has rebuffed vehemently, saying he authentically obtained his B.A.  in Geography from the institution.

The Kogi Senator on the floor of the senate plenary had boasted that he was currently a student in ABU pursuing his seventh degree, adding, “Go round all the UNIS (universities) I attended in digging more.”

On Saturday,  an exhaustive online search conducted by our correspondents – from the 1998/1999 alumni set to 2007 – for Melaye’s name on the website of ABU Alumni Association did not give any result that shows that the embattled lawmaker is a graduate of the school., Punch Newspaper reporting

His name, Daniel Jonah Melaye, as it appeared on a statement of result by the university, when searched, returned with zero result.

According to to Punch Newspaper, when it searched for ‘Daniel,’ ‘Jonah’ and ‘Melaye’ separately, different names came up.

A search for ‘Melaye’ brought up only one result: Melaye Sunday Ola (Biology Education), who graduated in 1980.

Another search for ‘Jonah’ came up with four different names: Bawa Jonah Seth Besanhi (BSc Geography; graduated in 1973); Birga Jonah (BSc Geography; graduated in 2007); Kaigama Jonah Ishaku (BSc Geography; graduated in 2011); and Ndasala Jonah (BSc Geography; graduate in 1987).

There were 10 results when ‘Daniel’ was searched: Abin Daniel John (BSc Geography; graduated in 1978); Adamu Kantsan Daniel (Institute Of Education Geography; graduated in 1992); Aniro Daniel Rabo (BSc Geography; no graduation date indicated); Atenji Daniel E. (BSc Geography; graduated in 1986); Beshiru Daniel (BSc Geography; graduated in 1980); Dada Daniel Adefila (BSc Geography; graduated in 1979); Awubra Daniel Akinkwe (Geography; graduated in 2002/2003); Daniel Bosede Biddy (BSc Geography graduated in 1983); Daniel Dogara Garba (BSc Geography; graduated in 2010); and Daniel Ezra Jatau (BSc Geography; graduated in 2011).

When our correspondent called the ABU Public Relations Officer, Mr. Adamu Mohammed, about 8pm on Saturday to find out why the senator’s name was not on the alumni website, his line rang out. On the second trial, the line was switched off.

A text message also sent to his mobile line on the matter had yet to be replied to as of press time.

When SUNDAY PUNCH contacted the President, ABU Alumni Association, Prof. Ahmed Tijanni-Mora, he said only the university could confirm if Melaye graduated from the institution.

He said, “The registrars of universities are in the best position to provide information about who attended their universities or not.”

Last week, ABU’s spokesman, Mohammed, when contacted by The PUNCH promised that the institution would come out with its position on Wednesday, which it failed to do as of the time of filing this report.

Saturday PUNCH’s March 25 edition had obtained a document which revealed that the senator got a statement of result with the logo of ABU.

The statement of result read, “This is to certify that Daniel Jonah Melaye having completed an approved course of study and passed the prescribed examinations as, under the authority of the Senate been awarded the Bachelor of Arts (Geography) with Third Class honours.”

The statement, issued by the Office of the Registrar, Academic Office, was dated February 3, 2000, and signed by B.B. Mshelthlila.

It was, however, observed that while the statement of result had the name “Daniel Jonah MELAYE”, the senator’s National Youth Service Corps discharge certificate, which was issued on July 8, 2001, read “Melaye Daniel;” his diploma certificate issued by the University of Jos on August 3, 2006 read “Daniel Dino Melaye”, and his Senior School Certificate in 1992 read ‘Melaiye Daniel Jonah O’ with Melaye being wrongly spelt.

Similarly, the University of Abuja, which Melaye claimed he had also attended, refused to comment on whether the senator obtained a master’s degree from the institution.

The Vice Chancellor of UNIABUJA, Prof. Michael Adikwu, responding to an inquiry by one of our correspondents on Saturday, said, “Issues of certificates should be directed to the registry. I heard that (allegation against Dino Melaye) also, but I will find out later.

Certificate Scandal: The Worst Melaye Can Do Is To Kill Me Like His Mentor, IBB Did To Dele Giwa - Sowore, SR Publisher

Omoyele Sowore, the publisher if the renown online news media outfit, Sahara Reporters has likened the embattled Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye to the former military dictator, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, saying the worst the Senator could do is to kill him like his mentor did to a journalist, Dele Giwa, several years ago.

Sahara reporter has been in forefront of reports alleging that Senator Dino Melaye's degree certificate allegedly obtained from Ahmadu Bello University could be fake, citing so many infractions on the certificate.

Sowore, the Publisher of Sahara report in a press statement seen by News Punch said he is was pertubed in any way to hear Dino Melaye had approached a court in a libel suit against him over the certificate fraud report.

Below Is the Full Text Of Omoyele Sowore Press Statement:

It was brought to my attention earlier that Nigerian Senator Dino Melaye promised to 'send me to jail' over the recent unraveling of his questionable educational background. While some are worried, appalled, alarmed and concerned and even scared about this declaration, it had me thinking differently. I am a Nigerian citizen who had been through torture, humiliations, and incarceration by dictators in uniform between 1992-1999 before I eventually left Nigeria. I have never doubted the power of justice over legalities.

That a Nigerian Senator in a democratic era could make this proclamation is indeed a sign that our democratic transition was a farce, particular when you've now noticed that Mr. Melaye was sitting at the feet of one of Nigeria's worst military dictators, Ibrahim Babangida just a week ago.
One of Babangida's worst crimes against humanity was the assassination of notable investigative journalists of our time, Dele Giwa, by way of a parcel bomb. Another thing Melaye shares in common with Babangida and his killer squad was using libel lawsuits to silence inquisitions In the 80's Gani Fawehimi was found liable of libeling the killers of Dele Giwa and asked to pay damages to Halilu Akilu.

Here is how I am different and also not different, I am not going to run away from criminals running the Nigerian political space until they are defeated, and their ideologies of greed, bloodiness, and avarice are entirely abandoned and discredited forever (Apology to Bob Marley).

If it takes my life, so be it. If it means another unjust ruling asking for damages for thieves. So be it. We must take our space back from the 10 percenters, drug dealers, certificate forgers, money launderers, political manipulators, and assassins.
Thanks you

CERTIFICATE FRAUD: Dino Melaye's Name MISSING From ABU Alumni Website

DINO MELAYE CERTIFICATE FRAUD
The certificate forgery scandal rocking the senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye took a messy dimension on SUNDAY as fresh report according to Punch Newspaper suggests his name is not on the Ahmadu Bello University alumni website.

Dino Melaye Certificate
Punch Newspaper - The qualification scandal that has enveloped the senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District at the upper chamber of the National Assembly, Dino Melaye, has deepened.

Documents obtained exclusively by Saturday PUNCH through painstaking and thorough investigations showed that the embattled senator has a Bachelor of Arts certificate in Geography from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State.

The senator, apart from bagging a third class, also possesses a diploma certificate from the University of Jos.

However, the senator only has a statement of results from ABU. And not only that, checks at the university revealed that it only offers B.Sc. Geography and not B.A. Geography as reflected on Melaye’s statement of results.

Melaye’s trouble began on Monday, March 20, 2017 when an online news medium, Sahara Reporters, in a tweet alleged that the senator did not graduate from ABU for his first degree, against his claim that he studied Geography in the prestigious institution.

The news medium also alleged that Melaye, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory, bribed his Head of Department, who assisted him to forge his transcript.

In a series of tweets via its Twitter handle, @SaharaReporters, the online news medium said some lecturers in the Geography Department insisted that Melaye did not graduate from the department and that his name was not on the graduation list because he failed five compulsory courses.

Following the report, which gained traction speedily, Melaye dismissed the allegations, daring the news medium to sue him if it had authentic evidence to back its claims.

He took to his twitter handle and wrote, “Sahara Reporters, please sue me and ABU if it is true that I did not graduate from Zaria. Tell Magu (EFCC Chairman) to arrest and prosecute me.”

Melaye also boasted that he was currently a student in ABU pursuing his seventh degree, adding, “Go round all the UNIS (universities) I attended in digging more.”

A day after the news broke, Melaye, while speaking on the floor of the Senate, also addressed himself as an “authentic graduate” of ABU.

Meanwhile, when The PUNCH contacted ABU to verify the conflicting information, the institution’s Information Officer, Adamu Mohammed, promised that the institution would come out with its position on Wednesday, which it failed to do as of the time of filing this report.

Amid the controversy, documents obtained by Saturday PUNCH revealed that the senator had a statement of results with the logo of ABU.

The statement of results read, “This is to certify that Daniel Jonah Melaye having completed an approved course of study and passed the prescribed examinations as, under the authority of the Senate been awarded the Bachelor of Arts (Geography) with Third Class honours.”

The statement, issued by the Office of the Registrar, Academic Office and dated February 3, 2000, was signed by B.B. Mshelthlila.

There are, however, certain discrepancies that beg for more clarifications. For instance, in the statement of results, his name was given as “Daniel Jonah MELAYE.” However, checks by one of our correspondents on https://abu.edu.ng/ revealed that Geography is in the Faculty of Science and not the Faculty of Arts as reflected in the statement of results.

Also, in the senator’s NYSC discharge certificate, which was issued on July 8, 2001, his name read “Melaye Daniel” and not Daniel Jonah as shown in the statement of results.

Also, in the diploma certificate issued to him by the University of Jos on August 3, 2006, his name read “Daniel Dino Melaye.”

He was issued an Advanced Diploma certificate in Law, Security and Conflict Resolution. He finished with ‘Lower Credit’ on August 3, 2006.

However, in his Senior School Certificate in 1992, his name read ‘Melaiye Daniel Jonah O.’ with Melaye being wrongly spelt.

In the result, he had P8 in English Language, P8 in Mathematics, P8 in Geography, P8 in Chemistry, C5 in Christian Religious Knowledge, P7 in Economics, C6 in Biology and B3 in Agric Science.

When contacted again by one of our correspondents on his mobile telephone on Friday evening, the Information Officer, ABU, Mr. Adamu Mohammed, sounded hostile.

“Please, this is not official time; call me tomorrow, thank you, goodnight,” he said and hung up.

It will be recalled that in furtherance to his defence, Melaye had reportedly claimed that he obtained degrees from the prestigious Harvard University, London School of Economics and Political Science and a post-graduate degree from the University of Jos.

But in a swift response to an enquiry, Harvard University, in a statement from the Registrar’s office, on Thursday noted that Melaye was not a graduate of the institution as he only completed a week-long leadership seminar in November 2016.

The London School of Economics equally responded on Thursday, saying there was no proof on the institution’s database that Melaye obtained any degree from the school.

But on Thursday, he filed a N5bn libel suit against Sahara Reporters at a FCT High Court. Meanwhile, given the Senate’s decision to investigate the allegation and the uproar the report had generated, Melaye had since taken to the social media to exonerate himself of all the allegations.

Moments after he filed the suit, he took to the social media to post pictures of the cover and certification pages of his Master’s project, and a group picture of his days as a corps member, even though he was the only one not in uniform.

He wore a white T-shirt and blue shorts, adding that he served in Kaduna State in 1999. The caption on the picture read, “ABU 99 set at NYSC camp in KD. Me in blue shorts.”

Also, on Friday, Wikipedia, had edited Melaye’s profile to include ‘Certificate Scandal’, which briefly chronicled the issues surrounding the ongoing certificate brouhaha.

Melaye Certificate Scandal: ABU Stirs Fresh Controversy, Makes U-Turn Keep Mum

DIno Melaye
Punch Newspaper - The authorities of the Ahmadu Bełlo University, Zaria, are still meeting over the alleged certificate scandal against Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi-West senatorial district in Kogi State.

The Information Officer of the institution, Mr. Adam Mohammed, had told our correspondent on Tuesday that the management would take a decision on the matter and make its finding public on Wednesday.

“We are gathering all the facts from the faculty and department and will make a press statement tomorrow. Thanks,” he said.

But the entire saga took a twist on Wednesday as the Information Officer rebuffed repeated calls to his cell phone.

When he was called with a number not known to him, he picked the call, but as soon as he discovered that the call was from The PUNCH, he became hostile.

He said, “ABU is not a motor park institution. We have ways of checking our systems for facts and records on such an issue. If your newspaper wants any information on the Melaye issue or any issue at all, you can write the vice-chancellor,” he said.

When reminded that he had promised that the university’s management would meet on the matter on Wednesday and give its position on Melaye’s academic status concerning his BSc degree in Geography, Mohammed declined and hung up.

But feelers from ABU indicated that the authorities were still meeting as regards the Melaye case.

A top source at the institution, who pleaded not to be named, said there appeared to be a problem with the senator’s Bachelor’s degree in Geography, adding that the management was being careful because of the political implication of the matter.

Another source, however, told our correspondent that the ‘social media’ report on the issue was unreliable.

“What I can tell you is that I know that the senator in the eye of the storm, I think, he did his Master’s in International Relations and Diplomacy (MIAD) in the university and ABU, as an organised university, cannot admit any student without a first degree to study for a postgraduate degree.

“But I don’t know whether he used the BSc degree in Geography to apply for admission or not. For me, I don’t see anything wrong in the university issuing a statement to clear the air on the matter,” the source stated.

Meanwhile, Melaye has expressed his intension to drag an online news medium, Sahara Reporters, before a court on Thursday.

Melaye wants to sue for defamation and will be demanding N5bn compensation from Sahara Reporters.

This is despite that the fact that the Senate, on Tuesday, decided to investigate the allegation based on a point of order raised by a former Majority Leader of the Senate, Senator Ali Ndume, calling for a probe into the scandal.

Melaye’s intension to take legal action against the news medium was made known on Wednesday when he invited the Senate Press Corps to a Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Abuja to cover the filing of the litigation.

Sahara Reporters had, in a report, alleged that Melaye did not graduate from the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Kaduna State, adding that he was parading a fake certificate.

But Melaye had, on Tuesday, said he was ready for the probe by the Senate.

He said, “I am here to respond to the issue raised by Senator Ali Ndume. I want to say, to me, it is a welcome development. Democracy is about investigation and no senator is above investigation. To me, it is a welcome development and it will finally clear the air on all the malicious and vindictive allegations.

“To say that I did not graduate from ABU is to say that I am not a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. ABU is a very prestigious university in this country and it is not possible for one to be running a master’s programme in the university when one did not graduate from a university. I have successfully completed one and I am doing the second one.”
