The Role Of Alumni Relations In Advancement And linkages: A Note To Those Demarketing Benue State University In The Name Of Alumni Association

The Role Of Alumni Relations In Advancement And linkages: A Note To Those Demarketing Benue State University In The Name Of Alumni Association

By Elijah Terdoo Ikpanor (Ph.D)
Director of Centre for Advancement and Linkages
Benue State University, Makurdi

The reputation of an educational institution lies on the shoulders of its students – Past and present. The reputation grows when it keeps producing successful graduates continuously i.e. intelligent, innovative and effective in their fields. Recently, Alumni members have helped institutions’ sustenance through their donations and voluntary help. Alumni members are helpful in providing valuable financial, intellectual and human resource base for their alma mater.

In the post covid-19 era where resources for research and infrastructure development of Universities were affected directly, it is generally agreed by stakeholders that if a big chunk of money that Universities require comes from alumni, it will help in the area of competitive quality education. Therefore, so many Universities have re-engineered and positioned their Alumni Associations for effective service delivery in funding research and critical infrastructure. The Advancement and Linkages or Advancement and Global Affairs offices have focused their attention to identify, mobilize and provide enabling environment for past students’ support to their alma mater.

Unfortunately, Benue State University Alumni Association has passed through turbulent times over the years. This has denied Benue State University the opportunities therein her past students, affecting the increasing quest for the role of the Alumni Associations in the development of the University in the 21st century University governing system. As a result, the global metrics in rating Benue State University is also affected by the activities of the Alumni Association.

Comparatively, Benue State University Alumni Association today is more promising to be robust in policy and actions if managed efficiently. One conspicuous fact is that, the University is growing and progressing extraordinarily in terms of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Studies. This means that the population has also astronomically grown at the moment. This population increase therefore, translates to the increase of the membership of the Alumni Association. With large membership, the activities of the Alumni Association should have also been visible in terms of home-coming/reunion, scholarship/support to students, career mentorship/opportunities for Alumni members, fundraising and contributions to the University’s infrastructure and policy drive.

Unfortunately, at no time the resourcefulness of the Association is harnessed. There has been proliferation of national officials, all scavenging for the financial subscriptions of fresh graduates. Instead of seeking for support from graduates of the University to contribute immensely to the development of the university, they rather scramble for the little resources that fresh graduates raise for the Association’s intervention to the development of the University. In other Universities, funds raised by fresh students are used for a particular project and credited to such a graduating class. In University of Jos, fresh graduates raise funds from every graduating student and put it in what they refer to as a “legacy project”. In Benue State University, the Alumni Association struggle over the funds raised by fresh graduates for their personal benefits. Regrettably, the desperation of members of the factions have not only mortified graduates that are highly placed in the society but have also brought the University to disrepute. While Degree is awarded in character and learning, some graduates have disappointedly shown lack of character in their quest to gain access to fresh graduates’ funds in the guise of involvement in the Alumni Association. Sadly, Benue State University has so many court cases that are instituted by these factions. They have also at different times, blackmailed and assassinated the character of Vice Chancellors and sometimes, other members of University management. It is regrettable that some past Vice Chancellors are still appearing before the court over issues of Alumni which are largely, driven by the personal interests of some past members of the Exco.

The office of advancement and linkages where I superintend is greatly affected by the crisis in the Alumni Association. Recent outings by some factions are not aimed at building our university’s reputation and brand, securing donations and funding but are targeted at tarnishing the image of the University and this must be resisted by well-meaning graduates of Benue State University. Press releases and media campaigns by these groups are continuously carried out against the Vice Chancellor and University in the past one week. This is not healthy for the recent efforts of the advancement and linkages office in bringing graduates of Benue State University together for the development of the University’s infrastructure and scholarships to students. The advancement and linkages’ efforts are targeted at reaching out to responsible former students who have not adequately participated in the activities of the Alumni to come together and develop the University just like past students of other Universities. Some of these past students though highly connected and blessed with resources to impact on the University are apathetic to the activities of the Alumni Association. This is largely because of the embarrassing outings of the factions in the Alumni. This has affected class reunions, Alumni week, homecoming, in-person social events, alumni chapter meet-ups, and networking opportunities where funds could have been raised for the development of the University. It is interesting to note that none of those who have claimed to have loved the Association and are on rescue mission has brought innovations on how to source for funds for the development of the University.

Benue State University will be celebrating thirty years anniversary of existence along 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th combined convocation ceremonies. During this time, some Benue State University graduates that have distinguished themselves in their chosen career will be celebrated too. This is what Benue State University wants from its graduates. Those that are good ambassadors will be celebrated while those that have deviated from the character upon which their degrees were awarded can be called to order. Some members of a particular faction has even threatened to stop the convocation from holding. This the height of it and security agencies should be made to watch out for the members of the faction. Universities have zero tolerance for falsehood. Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho withdrew the certificate a graduate for spreading falsehood. Kwara State University, Abia State University and Enugu State University of Science and Technology have all taken such steps in the past. Therefore, it is important for graduates of Benue State University to be of good character to account of themselves as graduates of Benue State University and not the spread of falsehood against the Vice Chancellor and Benue State University. Those who wish to lead the Association should think outside the box for the development of the University. They can consider so many approaches including the following;

Scholarship/support to students

The recruitment of members into the activities of Alumni begins at the level of studentship. Those students who benefit from the activities of their former students can become more committed to the Alumni after graduation. There are various ways through which the Alumni associations impact on their students and it could be through Department and Faculty Scholarship programmes, support in getting them to settle down as new students, interventions in their utility needs on campus and several others.

Career mentorship/opportunities for Alumni members

An alumni association brings former students together to maintain a connection with their university and fellow graduates. Fresh graduates get connected with professionals from their former schools. Without Alumni network, reunion and home-coming activities, these opportunities are lost. Our Alumni is still lagging behind on this situation.

Fundraising and contributions to the University’s infrastructure and policy drive

University alumni can make strong contributions to the welfare of their alma mater but one of the most important ways they contribute is through financial donations. Last year, the University of Lagos Alumni Association attracted a massive building to their alma mater. We have seen Ahmadu Bello University Alumni, University of Ibadan Alumni Association raise huge amount of money for their Universities through their members. This is what we also expect from those that want to lead the Association in Benue State University.

Alumni Network and Annual Week: Home-coming/reunion Activities

Benue State University Alumni Association can introduce a homecoming event that will bring all the former students back to the campus. Both alumni, students, and friends will participate in the many festivities that will take place on campus in every December. The aim will be to connect former students back to the university where they can have some fun, be a part of something bigger than themselves, and stay connected to their University family.

Alumni Scholarship/support to students

Cultivate the policy of enlisting students who are prospective Alumni members into the benefits of the Association even as students. Members of the Alumni who are doing well in their chosen carriers can be encouraged to institute scholarships and tuition support in the Departments and faculties. Alumni can institute career guide and mentorship sessions for the students where members of the Alumni will feature from time to time to engage the students. These interventions will knit the alumni members together with the students and the benefit therein will continue to sustain the bond and in turn will contribute to the development of the University generally.

My dear Benue State University graduates, Benue State University needs all of you for critical infrastructure development and scholarships to students. We will reach out to you soon for your cooperation in setting up an enviable robust Association. As a link person between the University and Alumni, I assure you that we will achieve success with Unity. Benue State Alumni Association must rise above local sentiments. We must flourish as a vehicle that will drive development in Benue State University, Makurdi.

The Board is poised to see that a reasonable percentage of candidates who take this examination and are qualified find placement in tertiary institutions.

In the cause of conducting admission exercise, many institutions have admitted candidates on merit only for them to discover that such candidates do not have qualified O’levels results or the right combination for admission and had to delete and start the process all over again. With this, they would have denied other qualified candidates the opportunities for admissions.

This we are addressing by ensuring that no candidate is henceforth recommended without his O’levels result being supplied. To achieve this, JAMB will insist that candidates supply their result on its website during registration or later, but before admissions commences for them to be considered for admissions. We believe this will allow only qualified candidates to be considered for admissions.

We have designed a Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) where the Board will interface with the institutions and ensure the compliance of this reform. The summary is that no candidate will be admitted with awaiting result. Candidates and their parents are also to note that the Board has restructured the registration platform to allow for only one choice of Public University. The new registration platform will now be first choice, second choice, third choice and fourth choice and not most preferred, preferred etc as it was.

Candidates’ first choice can be a College, University, Innovative Enterprises Institutions or Polytechnic/Monotechnic. However, if a candidate makes a Public University his first choice, he will not have any public University to choose for 2nd, 3rd and 4th choice. He will have on the remaining three choices, a College, a Polytechnic, Private University and IEI’S.

However, candidates for the 2017 UTME can now select NCE (College) or ND (Polytechnic/Monotechnic) as their 1st choice up to 3rd choice and the 4th IEI. They can select the IEI (Innovative Enterprise Institution, ND) as their 1st choice up to the 4th choice, but can only pick a public university once.

This restructuring is to expand the opportunities available to candidates as almost all the public universities do not consider candidates on the second choice list because they hardly exhaust their first choice.

The registration of UTME this year will go side by side with the Direct Entry and during registration, candidates 10 finger are to be captured using Biometric Verification Machine (BVN).

Again, we want to inform candidates that no cyber café will be registering candidates for our examination. On no account should any candidate patronize any cybercafé for our registration. It is important to note that the Board will not deploy the use of any SCRATCH CARD for the 2017 UTME registration exercise.
JAMB Scraps Awaiting Result Option; Includes 4th Choice, BVN RegistrationPRESS STATEMENT:

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has concluded all restructuring, transformation, reforms and other preparation for the 2017 UTME and is now set to commence the sale of its application document in March 2017.

FG Abolishes Pre-Degree, Diploma Programmes In Nigerian Universities

National Universities Commission (NUC),
Nigerian universities are longer allowed to offer degrees in Pre-degree and diploma programmes.

The National Universities Commission (NUC), which took the action, instructed them to leave the running of such programmes for polytechnics and concentrate effort on producing human capital in the core undergraduate, part-time and post-graduate courses.

Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, gave this order at meetings held between October 10 and 12 with vice chancellors of the 143 universities in the country, according to a statement by the NUC yesterday.

He also directed that the research directorate of NUC be strengthened to work with those of universities. This is to co-ordinate research activities in universities and ensure relevance of their outputs. He said the NUC, would engage a mix of old, experienced and young vibrant academics to come up with curricula that would not only be dynamic and responsive to national needs, but also conform to global trends.

The statement continued: “A comprehensive review of the entire university curricula (the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS)) and ranking of Nigerian universities have also been scheduled for 2017, while two of the cardinal activities of the commission, accreditation of programmes and resource verification, will now take place only twice and thrice a year, respectively: May and November for accreditation as well as March, July and December for resource verification.”

NUC also warned that any university that failed to present its programmes for accreditation promptly without satisfactory reasons, given well in advance, would be denied same and the relevant agencies (JAMB and NYSC) duly notified.

SHOCKER: Ogun Popular Public School Issues Students Result On Sheets of Paper, See Photo
Schools owned and run by the Ogun State government are now issuing their students report cards written on plain sheets of papers; SaharaReporters has found out. “This is a ridiculous development,” said a parent of one of the pupils in a state-run school. She was one of several parents who criticized the practice, voicing deep concern for their children’s academic future.

Among the schools in Ogun State that issued such report cards, obtained by our correspondent, is Abeokuta Grammar School, a venerable institution attended by numerous prominent Nigerians. Our correspondent obtained a sample of a report card showing a student’s percentage in an examination, the class the student was promoted to, and school resumption date. The school stamp is conspicuously displayed on the sheet of paper.

An administrator at one of the state’s public schools told our correspondent that schools had to resort to writing reports on sheets of paper “because of the lackadaisical attitude of top officials in the Ministry of Education.”

Another parent, Olanrewaju Adeoti, described the development as a sign that education had taken a nosedive in the state, adding that it was regrettable.

He said that a large percentage of students whose parents cannot afford tuition fees at private institutions were likely to have their prospect of receiving quality education jeopardized.

Several parents told our correspondent that the embarrassing development was a symptom of a crisis in the state’s educational sector, adding that state officials were toying with the future of innocent children.

Rotimi Farounbi, the principal of Abeokuta Grammar School, located in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, admitted that the college issued the controversial 'report‎ card' on a sheet of paper. He claimed, however, that the result was just a notification, adding that the school would issue proper report cards to all students. But one of the parents said he remained doubtful, drawing attention to the fact that schools in the state are due to resume classes in about two weeks, after a prolonged holiday.

When our reporter reminded the principal that classes would soon resume, he simply reaffirmed his position, declaring, “It is not report card [that was issued], but the notification for the parents. We are still going to issue report cards to the students.”

Contacted by our correspondent, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Kola Fagbohun, said the government would investigate the issue, adding that it was a shocking development.

“We heard about it, and we are investigating because that is ‎strange,” he said.

CRUTECH Alumni Urge Govt to Set Up Education Endowment Fund for Varsity

CRUTECH Alumni Urge Govt to Set Up Education Endowment Fund for Varsity

Inyali Peter, Calabar
 Eyam Abeng
Alumni association of Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) has urged the state government to set up an Education Endowment Fund (EEF) where one per cent of profits before tax of all the firms operating in the state will be devoted to the development of the institution.

National President of the association, Mr. Eyam Abeng stated this on Tuesday, during the institution's annual stakeholders forum which held at the main campus of the university in Calabar.

Abeng who was represented by the National Secretary of the Association Mr. Tony Sylvers noted that with the current economic situation of the state and country, it is necessary for government to be creative and think outside the box on how to generate funds for the university.

While maintaining that subventions from government and the university internally generated revenue which is majorly from fee payment cannot sustain the institution, he stressed that setting up the EEF would be a more sustainable, proactive and forward looking way of supporting the government in addressing challenges of funding infrastructures in tertiary institutions in the state.

The President lauded what he described as "uncommon" achievements of the current management team led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Anthony Owan Enoh in areas of infrastructure, academic as well as the current university ranking which placed CRUTECH above other renowned universities in the country.

He urged stakeholders and well-to-do Cross Riverians to see CRUTECH as their personal project stressing that quality education is the only viable antidote to the many challenges confronting the state and country at large.
According to him, "We want to passionately appeal to all stakeholders on the need to always assist CRUTECH to realize her set goals and objectives through greater synergy, collaboration and partnership.

"CRUTECH graduates are everywhere in the universe and they are also contributing effectively to the socio-economic development of Cross River State and Nigeria at large. Let’s assist to improve and sustain the dreams of the founding fathers of CRUTECH.

"The monumental achievement of this present management are self-evident and written boldly on every wall in CRUTECH and shall continue to be remembered. It is therefore cogent that we should continue to give them our support.

"I want to appeal to the state government to set up an Educational Endowment fund (EEF) which will be used to support CRUTECH and other state own tertiary institutions in the state. All firms operating in Cross River State should be mandated by law to contribute at least one percent (1%) of their profit before tax as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)".

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Anthony Owan Enoh stated that while it is cogent for government to play her parts, students and parents must support the efforts of government to actualize the dream of the founding fathers of the institution by promptly paying their school fee.

"Before we blame government, we as stakeholders must devise measures to make our students pay school fee. A university that cannot even collect school fee has no moral justification to ask government for anything so we want stakeholders to empower management to introduce strategies that will make students comply with fee payment", the VC said.

At the end of the meeting, a communiqué was issued granting the management the permission to publish a week to exams, list of students who have paid school fee as the only qualified people to write exams and those who don't pay before the exams, their scripts be separated and burnt.

STAKEHOLDERS REVIEW FRENCH LANGUAGE ACTIVITIES IN NIGERIA

STAKEHOLDERS REVIEW FRENCH LANGUAGE ACTIVITIES IN NIGERIA
The need to re-position the study of French Language   in Nigeria   with total focus of making the major reason of introducing it to the Nigerian academic world a reality, came to the fore at the just concluded forum between the Heads of Department of French in Nigerian Universities, Degree Awarding Institutions and   the Management of the Nigeria French Language Village (NFLV), Badagry respectively.

In his  welcome address, Prof. Raufu Adebisi, the Director General /CEO,Nigeria French Language Village, who was the chief host opined that the need to review the  impact of French language in Nigerian universities and the  compulsory language immersion programme.

“It is the customary of the village to  invite Head of Departments of French in Nigerian Universities  and Colleges  of Education to Badagry for interaction towards improved delivery of our  services. As major partners in this business, we of the Nigerian French Language village hold you in high esteem and hope that our existing cordial relationship will grow from strength to strength” Prof. Adebisi opined.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, top on the agenda at “The Annual Meeting” were the need to review the activities of the French Village for 2015/2016 academic session and deliberate on other matters of interests to French Studies in Nigeria.

The forum notes the level of infrastructural development and high academic standard in the Nigeria French Language Village and commended the hard work and commitment of the Management and Staff of the Village.

Going further, the forum decried the non-promotion of eminently qualified academic staff of the Village to the professional cadre, which has led to the exodus of scholars from the Village; and  particularly disturbed by the stagnation of colleagues at the Senior Lectureship grade in the French Village.

"We  therefore urge the Federal Ministry of Education to give approval for the promotion of qualified colleagues as it obtains in sister institutions like The National Institute of Nigerian Languages (NINLAN), Aba and The Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Lagos".
Continuing "we are  worried about the dismay of  de-listing of Nigeria French Language Village, Badagry, from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) intervention since 2010 in spite of the growing student population in the Village" the communique revealed.

The forum, therefore, calls on the Federal Government to relist the Nigeria French Language Village, Badagry , as a matter of necessity, to increase the funding of the Nigeria French Village to a level that will  enable it to carry out its mandate adequately.

In conclusion, the communique issued and  signed by the duo  of  Professor Raufu A. Adebisi, the Director/CEO,Nigeria French Language Village, Ajara-Badagry and Dr. Umar Muhammad DOGON DAJI,(Head, Department of French),Usman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto, respectively noted with delight the large participation of Universities and Colleges of Education in the French Language Immersion Programme, and urges them and all others to Patronise the Nigeria French Language Village for the Language Immersion Programme of their students.
