2018 FIFA Best Award: Luka Modric Beats Ronaldo, Messi; Declared Winner

Luka Modric
Luka Modric
Luka Modric has been crowned the 2018 FIFA Men’s Player of the year, after defeating fellow finalists Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohammed Salah at the London’s Royal Festival Hall on Monday night.

His emergence follows his exploits with Croatia who reached the final of this year’s FIFA World Cup in Russia and with Real Madrid who retained the UEFA Champions League.

This year’s edition brings an end to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s 10-year domination of the most prestigious award. Both Ronaldo and Messi failed to show up at the awards.

‘It was an unbelievable season, the best season in my life,’ said Modric, 33. ‘I’m very proud of everything I achieved this year. It will be remembered, for sure, forever,’ said Modric after receiving his award.

Nine different categories were decided with the Goalkeeper of the Year going to Belgium goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, while Didier Deschamps won the Coach of the Year for guiding France to win the World Cup in Russia.

In doing so, Deschamps becomes the third man in history to win the World Cup both as a player and a manager, joining Brazil’s Mario Zagallo and Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer.

Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah won the Puskas award in recognition of his strike against Everton last season in the English Premier League which saw him wriggle past three defenders to score. Interestingly Salah’s goal was adjudged the best ahead of Gareth Bale’s bicycle kick against Liverpool during the UEFA Champions League final.

Olympic Lyon manager Reynald Pedros was voted the Women’s Coach of the Year after leading the French side to a league and UEFA Women’s Champions League double last season. The women’s player award went to Brazil’s Marta who beat Lyon duo Ada Hegerberg and Dzsenifer Marozsan. Marta had previously won the-defunct FIFA World Player of the Year award five years in a row between 2006 and 2010.

The voting system is decided by national team managers, national captains, media representatives and an online vote.

Chelsea Signs Jorginho
Chelsea has completed a deal to take Napoli's Jorginho to Stamford Bridge, the club have announced.

The Italy international has penned a five-year deal with the Blues, becoming Maurizio Sarri's first signing for the club

Earlier on Saturday, the Blues confirmed that they had appointed Maurizio Sarri as their new manager for the next three years following the sacking of Antonio Conte on Friday.

Chelsea will pay £57m (€65m/$86m) for the player, with Jorginho having signed a five-year contract with the club, where he will earn £102k per week.

Jorginho played 33 times for Napoli in Serie A last season, scoring two goals and creating four more from his deep-lying position in the midfield as they finished second behind Juventus in the standings.

Speaking to the club's official website, Jorginho said: "I am absolutely ecstatic to be here at Chelsea. It is not easy to become part of such a big team so I am very, very happy.

"I am excited to play in such an intense league, for a team that gives everything to play and win."

The Italy international was an important member of Napoli's squad under Sarri and the Blues expect him to have a similar influence in London.

"We are delighted Jorginho has chosen to join Chelsea," club director Marina Granovskaia said. "He was one of the most coveted midfielders in Europe and will become an important member of the playing squad.

"He has demonstrated his quality working under Maurizio Sarri and we are convinced his signing will help bring further success to Stamford Bridge."

City were previously interested in the 26-year-old Italy international but it is Sarri's side who have won the race to sign the player.

SOCCER FRAUD: 8 Men Discovered in Iranian Female Football Team

SOCCER FRAUD: 8 Men Discovered in Iranian Female Football Team

8 Men in Iran Female Soccer Team
A TOTAL OF EIGHT able body men has been detected in Iranian soccer team

They were reportedly fielded by officials of the Iranian football organization.

Iranian soccer officials are accused of taking advantage of a sports policy which allows biological men to play on women’s teams if they believe they are women trapped in men’s bodies. This policy was announced by the International Olympic Committee and allows men to participate in Olympic events without undergoing sex change procedures.

When the policy was announced, people worried that some countries would take advantage of the policies and replace their female athletes with men and just as feared, it happened, starting with Iran.

Iranian official, Mojtabi Sharifi, admitted that the men were waiting for sex change operations.

Reacting to this, soccer authorities have ordered that all 8 men undergo gender testing to determine their levels of testosterone. This isn’t the first time the Iranian women’s team has fielded men. There were rumors that the players were men in 2011 and random gender checks in 2014 revealed some of the supposed women were men.

The problem is complicated by the Iranian culture which prohibits women from traveling unless they are given permission by their husbands or fathers. For example, Niloufar Ardalan who was recently prevented from accompanying the soccer team to a game in Malaysia because her husband would not allow her to travel.

Russia 2018: See The New Lovely Unveiled Super Eagles Kits

The Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi says the national team players would fall in love with the dazzling new jerseys for the Russia 2018 World Cup.

Mikel yesterday led the younger generation of Eagles players to the unveiling of the kits by Nike in London.

The dazzling bright green and white home shirts was launched by Arsenal forward Alex Iwobi, alongside the duo of Leicester youngsters, Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi.

In the 1 minute 20 seconds clip, Ndidi, Mikel, Iwobi and Iheanacho were shown giving their verdicts on the attire.

“I can see the players going crazy over this one,” Mikel said when he was shown the national side’s home shirt, in Nigeria’s famous dark green with an eye-catching neon logo.

Arsenal star Iwobi, told Nike’s official website; “ I grew up in England, but Nigeria is my homeland. When I scored that goal, the players were dancing, the fans were playing trumpets and beating drums… there was just so much passion and energy.

‘It is always an honour to wear the white and green. To compete this summer is not just our dream, it is also the dream of our fans. Together, we all represent Naija.’

The kit manufacturers Nike said they wanted to ‘tap into the attitude of the nation’ with the design and aimed to build the kit based on the identities of the players.

Nike’s Nigeria shirts are part of a collection which features Fast Fit Vapotknit technology to aide the athlete’s performance.

Despite the mixed reaction, the kit’s similarity to the iconic shirts worn by the nation’s Golden Generation in their maiden World Cup campaign in the United States in 1994 should earn it major points for nostalgia among Super Eagles supporters.

“A constant in Nigeria is an endearing love of football,” NFF President Amaju Pinnick, told Nike’s official website. “When football is on, everything stops. The new Nike kit designs honour our federation’s rich traditions. Moreover, they celebrate everything we relish about our culture.”

Iheanacho Creates First English VAR Goal Record, Scores Brace In FA Cup Match

Iheanacho Creates First English VAR Goal Record, Scores Brace In FA Cup Match

Iheanacho Scores First VAR Goal In England
Kelechi Iheanacho became the first player to score a goal awarded by a video assistant referee in English football as Leicester beat Fleetwood in an FA Cup third-round replay.

Iheanacho opened the scoring - with a routine strike - from Islam Slimani's pass.

The big talking point of the game came when the former Manchester City striker initially had a goal disallowed for offside from Riyad Mahrez's through ball.

But referee Jonathan Moss liaised with video official Mike Jones, who told him Nathan Pond's trailing foot was keeping Iheanacho onside, and the goal was awarded 67 seconds after it hit the back of the net.

Leicester striker Jamie Vardy, who missed the 0-0 draw in the initial tie, came on late on to face his former club, who are mid-table in League One.

This is the third time the video assistant referee (VAR) has been used as a trial in English football, all this month, after Brighton v Crystal Palace in the FA Cup and Chelsea v Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.

The video referee was consulted in both those games, but never used to reverse a decision.

So 16 January 2018 and the first VAR decision becomes a landmark date for English football, like the first substitute to come on or the first game to be played under floodlights.

Moss had briefly spoken to the video official when Iheanacho had an earlier goal ruled out because the ball had crossed the byeline before Demarai Gray crossed it.

Nigeria striker Iheanacho, 21, has been disappointing since his £25m summer move from Manchester City.

He has not had many chances - only playing a total of 403 minutes before the game against Fleetwood, but he has rarely impressed during that time - one goal against Leeds in the EFL Cup in October aside.

But he did a good job against Fleetwood, opening the scoring with their first shot of the whole tie after converting a pass from fellow bit-part big-money forward Slimani.

He then played in Slimani with a good ball over the top, but the Algerian - who did not look impressed to be replaced after 55 minutes - volleyed wide.

Iheanacho did well for his historic goal, when he ran on to captain-for-the-day Mahrez's through ball before clipping the ball over keeper Chris Neal.

Fleetwood played their part in the first half, with Ashley Hunter forcing a diving save from Eldin Jakupovic and Conor McAleny going close on several occasions.

But in the end the quality of Iheanacho was too much for them.
