Gen. Bamaiyi Opened Can-Of-Worms: Abdulsalami, IBB, Olanrewaju Open Up

Ishaya Bamaiyi Babangida and Abdulsalami
Daily Sun - Barely 48 hours after former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi, released a book in which he revealed what could pass for the secrets of the 1999 presidential election, those he said played big roles in the emergence of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, have opened up.

Reacting to the content of the book, former Head of State, General Abdulsalamni Abubakar; former military President, Ibrahim Babangida and ex-Minister of Communication, General Tajudeen Olanrewaju, have commented.

Bamaiyi had, in his book entitled: Vindication of a General, whose public presentation held in Abuja at the weekend, alleged that former military Generals, including Abdulsalami, who was Head of State at the time; former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida; ex-National Security Adviser, Gen. Aliyu Gusau, and former Minister of Defence, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, plotted the emergence of Obasanjo, who was released from prison then, as president.

He said owing to his opposition of the General’s plan to make Obasanjo president and his preference for Chief Olu Falae, who was a joint presidential candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and the All Peoples Party (APP) in the 1999 election, he fell into trouble.
Bamaiyi told a story of how Abdulsalami allegedly held meetings with Babangida and Gusau, wherein they agreed on Obasanjo’s return to power.
He stated, “Unknown to me, Gen. (Abdulsalami) Abubakar had already committed himself to Generals Babangida, T. Y. Danjuma and Aliyu Gusau on General Obasanjo’s coming in to take over from him (Abdulsalami). A proposal I totally objected to, which I told Generals Abubakar, TY Danjuma and Aliyu Gusau in very clear terms. My stand did not go well with the generals and General Abubakar started feeling unsafe.”

Speaking with Daily Sun last night, Abdulsalami said he had been inundated with telephone calls from people who had read Bamaiyi’s account.
The former head of state said he had not seen or read the book, as he was abroad, but said when he returned in two weeks, he would  tell his own side of the story, if there is need for it.

General Abdulsalami said although it was against the military tradition for senior officers to comment on what their juniors have said, he could speak in details if situation demanded such, after he would have studied the book.

Said he: “I am currently out of the country. Since today (yesterday) I have been receiving calls from Nigeria and across the world, from people who read the news item on the book. I have not seen the book or read it. I hope to return in about two weeks.

“I must say, in any case, that it is against military tradition for senior officers to join issues with their juniors, but if it becomes imperative that I should make full comments on the content of the book, I will do so.” Also reacting to the allegation, former Edo State Commissioner for Information and General Babangida’s spokesman, Prince Kassim Afegbua, said Bamaiyi had not said anything new. He confirmed that Babangida was part of those who helped Obasanjo emerge as president.

Said Afegbua; “That’s not a new song. It is true that IBB was part of those who helped former President Obasanjo to stage a come back. That is no news at all. We had said it before; it is nothing new. But they did not impose him. They ensured that he scaled through the primaries of the PDP in Jos and was made to face Nigerian electorate at the election.

“Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is aware of this. What is General Bamaiyi trying to achieve? We have repeatedly said this. A lot of Nigerians are also aware. The reason for the support was altruistic because they felt Chief Obasanjo was in a better position to heal the wounds in the land at that time.”

Also speaking on Bamaiyi’s book, General Olanrewaju said the former Chief of Army Staff’s position was misplaced facts about what transpired in the 1995 and 1997 attempted coups.

General Olanrewaju, who was also a former General Officer Commanding (GOC) Third Armoured Division of the Nigerian Army, Jos, said, in a release he personally signed yesterday: “The point to note is that student of history must know what transpired in the 1995 and 1997 coup saga for posterity sake as against the misplacement of facts contained in the excerpts reported from the Bamaiyi’s new book.

“Ironically, the new book can open the eyes of all Nigerians to see the footprint of an ambitious soldier that Bamaiyi epitomises, as detailed in every account of power play, which appears unfavourable to him, but favourable to both General Abdulsalaam Abubakar as Abacha’s successor and General Olusegun Obasanjo as 1999 civilian president. He lost out in the power play.

“There are two main issues I want to correct, the first of which was the arrest of Gwadabe. In his book Bamaiyi stated that General Olanrewaju briefed the meeting called by the then Chief of Army Staff General Alwali Kazir (retd), which was factually incorrect.  What is correct is that the only person who briefed the meeting was the DMI (Directorate of Military Intelligence), General Sarki Mukthar, whose duty it was to brief the meeting about security situation in the country. “Following this, I was instructed by the meeting to facilitate the arrest of Gwadabe, whose brigade in Yola was under my command, while other commanders were similarly instructed to effect the arrests of others under their own commands. The instruction to arrest Colonel Bello Fadile was also given in the meeting.

“Fortunately, General Kazir and General Mukthar are alive today to testify to the truth of this matter.”

Olanrewaju said the second issue to be cleared is on the 1997 Diya’s coup, where Bamaiyi said “other meetings took place at a guest house with Gen. Diya, Gen. Olanrewaju, CO 7 Gds Bn, Gen. Diya’s security officer, Major Fadipe and me. Of course, General Abacha was always briefed after the meetings.”

On this, Olanrewaju said he was not in the said meeting. According to him, “the said CO 7 Gds Bn and Major Fadipe, if called upon, will testify to the truth. I met Ishaya on two occasions; he met me in my house and I met him in his house, both times in Abuja.
“For avoidance of doubt and for students of history, the first time I heard about the Diya’s coup was when Bamaiyi told me and Aziza confirmed it.”

Bamaiyi had also claimed that members of the defunct National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) merely paid lip service to the late Chief Moshood Abiola’s travails in the hands of the General Sani Abacha regime. Bamaiyi also accused NADECO of misleading Abiola into rejecting a conditional release granted him by Abacha: “If they were sincere and actually supported him, they would have accompanied him to where he declared himself President.”

“It is also obvious that Abiola was abandoned after his death, which some people suspected that it had the support of some NADECO members. After Abiola’s death, one would have expected some reactions, at least, from Lagos, but there was no reaction anywhere.” Bamaiyi noted that following the failure of NADECO members to strongly make a case for the release of Abiola, he, former president of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Pascal Bafyau, and Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI) had to meet and resolved to take up the initiative of working for the release of the politician.
“There are some Nigerians who made efforts to get Abiola released. After Abiola’s arrest, the late General Ibrahim Gumel – then the Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI), the late Mr. Pascal Bafyau, then the President of NLC and I met at Headquarters, Lagos Garrison Command on Kofo Abayomi Street. We discussed the implications of Abiola’s arrest.”

Gen Bamaiyi's Revelations: How Obasanjo Betrayed Accord To Handover To IBB In 2003 After Being Made President By ...

Obasanjo and IBB
A former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi, has shed light on the strategy allegedly deployed by former generals to ensure the emergence of a former military Head of State, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, as the country’s president in 1999.

Bamaiyi’s new book, Vindication of a General, claimed that a former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), who was in power at the time; former military dictator, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida; ex-Minister of Defence, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd.); and a former National Security Adviser, Gen. Aliyu Gusau, developed and executed the plan that helped Obasanjo to return to power as a civilian president in 1999.

The former army chief, who was detained for years during the Abdulsalami regime, attributed his travails to his opposition to Obasanjo’s candidacy and his support for the Alliance for Democracy’s  presidential candidate in 1999, Chief Olu Falae.

He further revealed that the plot to return Obasanjo to power started shortly after Abdulsalami got into power. He alleged that Abdulsalami, on becoming the head of state, started holding secret meetings with Babangida and Gusau, on the future of the country.

He stated, “Unknown to me, Gen. (Abdulsalami) Abubakar had already committed himself to Generals Babangida, T.Y.Danjuma and Aliyu Gusau on General Obasanjo’s coming in to take over from him. A proposal I totally objected to, which I told Generals Abubakar, TY Danjuma and Aliyu Gusau in very clear terms. My stand did not go (down) well with the generals and General Abubakar started feeling unsafe.”

He stated, “He (Abdulsalami) was supported by some northern generals, who believed one of them would take over from Obasanjo after one term of four years. It was alleged that Obasanjo had promised Gen. Babangida that he would succeed him.”

To buttress his claim, the Bamaiyi said, “General Abubakar prepared and handed over his (handover) report to Gen. Obasanjo’s team, dated June 1998. This means that he prepared the report as soon as he was sworn in as the commander-in-chief in June 1998.”

Bamaiyi noted he insisted on Falae when he discovered that those who annulled June 12, 1993 election wanted to ‘arrange’ a president for the South-West.

“I decided to take Chief Olu Falae to Gen. Abubakar and only Abubakar and I discussed this issue.  I do not regret that action because I was and I am convinced Falae would have done better as president of our great country. I am glad those behind Obasanjo knew (sic) better,” he said on page 120 of the book.

Bamaiyi said the entire plot was mooted by Babangida who was desperate to return to power. Bamaiyi  stated, “This was not done because they liked Obasanjo, but because of the ambition of General Babangida to return as president after Obasanjo’s tenure.

“I believe that they saw Obasanjo as a political novice they would manipulate. They never thought they would meet a different Obasanjo from the one they had known in 1979.”

He added that Gusau and Danjuma put pressure on him to support Obasanjo, but he told them that Nigerians were tired of military rule.

“When I discovered that some people were pushing for a president from the South-West, I asked a friend, Dr. Frank Adejuwon, a minister in the Abacha cabinet, to contact Chief Falae and bring him to Abuja.

“I took Falae to Gen. Abubakar and told him that Falae was a very good candidate, if the presidency had to go to the South-West. I believe Gen. Abubakar briefed Obasanjo, which led to an unforgiving Obasanjo developing actual hatred as far as I am concerned.”

On page 125, however, Bamaiyi also revealed that his support for Falae was a last resort. He pointed out that narrowing the search for the next president to the South-West did not make sense to him.

He stated, “When Gen. Abukakar took over, he and I had a discussion about the military and how Nigerians hated it. We agreed we should make a clean break by ensuring the next president would be someone without a military background.

“I was later told that for some reasons, others involved wanted someone from the South-West, which did not make any sense to me. I stood for an open election for Nigerians to decide who ruled them.”

Certificate Scandal: The Worst Melaye Can Do Is To Kill Me Like His Mentor, IBB Did To Dele Giwa - Sowore, SR Publisher

Omoyele Sowore, the publisher if the renown online news media outfit, Sahara Reporters has likened the embattled Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye to the former military dictator, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, saying the worst the Senator could do is to kill him like his mentor did to a journalist, Dele Giwa, several years ago.

Sahara reporter has been in forefront of reports alleging that Senator Dino Melaye's degree certificate allegedly obtained from Ahmadu Bello University could be fake, citing so many infractions on the certificate.

Sowore, the Publisher of Sahara report in a press statement seen by News Punch said he is was pertubed in any way to hear Dino Melaye had approached a court in a libel suit against him over the certificate fraud report.

Below Is the Full Text Of Omoyele Sowore Press Statement:

It was brought to my attention earlier that Nigerian Senator Dino Melaye promised to 'send me to jail' over the recent unraveling of his questionable educational background. While some are worried, appalled, alarmed and concerned and even scared about this declaration, it had me thinking differently. I am a Nigerian citizen who had been through torture, humiliations, and incarceration by dictators in uniform between 1992-1999 before I eventually left Nigeria. I have never doubted the power of justice over legalities.

That a Nigerian Senator in a democratic era could make this proclamation is indeed a sign that our democratic transition was a farce, particular when you've now noticed that Mr. Melaye was sitting at the feet of one of Nigeria's worst military dictators, Ibrahim Babangida just a week ago.
One of Babangida's worst crimes against humanity was the assassination of notable investigative journalists of our time, Dele Giwa, by way of a parcel bomb. Another thing Melaye shares in common with Babangida and his killer squad was using libel lawsuits to silence inquisitions In the 80's Gani Fawehimi was found liable of libeling the killers of Dele Giwa and asked to pay damages to Halilu Akilu.

Here is how I am different and also not different, I am not going to run away from criminals running the Nigerian political space until they are defeated, and their ideologies of greed, bloodiness, and avarice are entirely abandoned and discredited forever (Apology to Bob Marley).

If it takes my life, so be it. If it means another unjust ruling asking for damages for thieves. So be it. We must take our space back from the 10 percenters, drug dealers, certificate forgers, money launderers, political manipulators, and assassins.
Thanks you

Action for Democratic Party IBB
At last, the much-talked about new mega party, has been christened as Action for Democratic Party Association (ADPA) and vowed to sack the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019 if eventually registered as a political party by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

It said that the current pathetic and weak state of the existing major political parties in the country, coupled with the hardship Nigerians are passing through, have jointly bolstered its chances.

Addressing a press conference at its National Headquarters in Asokoro, Abuja, shortly after submitting registration forms at INEC headquarters, National Chairman pro tem of ADPA, Mr. Yabagi Sani, said they were making history having complied with all the constitutional requirements for registration as a full-fledged political party.

He explained that the political association has interim structures in the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

Yabagi, a well-known ally of former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, noted that the frustration and pains in the land have made the people yearn for an alternative political party comprising credible Nigerians.

He said if registered, the party would chart a new course that will put the nation on the path of sustainable development and national cohesion.

He regretted that despite the enormous human and material resources available in the country, “the nation still wallows in abject poverty and lack of direction”, but declared that it was poised to rebuild Nigeria to achieve greatness as envisaged and desired by all and sundry.

More Shocking Secrets Of $2.1b Dasuki Scam: IBB, Emir Sanusi, Others, 'MENTIONED' As Beneficiaries; Why Dasuki Wants No-secret Trial

Sanusi lamido and IBB
In a veiled manner, former Military Head of States, General Ibrahim Gbadamosi Babangida, Popularly known as IBB, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, now Emir of Kano, Emir, Sanusi Lamido II may have been mentioned as prominent Nigerians who have benefitted from the arm slush fund allegedly misappropriated by former National Security Adviser to ExPresident Goodluck Jonathan, Colonel Sambo Dasuki.

Though the names of IBB and Emir Sanusi were not directly mentioned as beneficiaries of the slush fund, but the description of a certain ex-Head of State flown to Germany for medical attention pointed at IBB in yesterday's Punch Newspaper's report pointed an obvious direction at the former ruler . The Former President was sometime 2015 flown to Germany when he was serious ill.

Also, the same Punch Newspaper described another beneficiary as a certain monarch, whose coronation was funded with Dasuki's scam fund; the description which could be said to have matched Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi's, who also coincidentally had his coronation shrtly before the ouster of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Well, the above mentioned may not be the beneficiaries, but Punch Newspaper's description of the fresh beneficiaries pointed to them arguably.

Below is the Full report according to Punch Newspaper:

There were indications on Thursday that former Nigerian leaders, traditional and religious leaders from across the country were listed as beneficiaries of the $2.1bn arms funds in the final report of the Presidential panel which probed military contracts from 2007 to 2015.

It was gathered that the report, which had been submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari, recommended the retrieval of undisclosed sums of money from some indicted persons, while in some cases, it recommended their prosecution.

A highly-placed security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said some former Heads of State, were listed as having received various sums of money from the Office of the National Security Adviser under  Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.).

The source added that a prominent northern traditional ruler was provided funds from the NSA’s office for the monarch’s coronation.

Giving further insights into what some of the funds were used for, the source explained that some were spent to pay the medical bills as well as travel expenses of some of the ex-leaders, who had to travel abroad to seek medical help for undisclosed aliments.

In one of the most notable cases, the report stated that the ONSA shouldered the cost of the medical trips of one of the ex-Heads of State to Germany.

The source added, “The list of beneficiaries from the ONSA under Col. Sambo Dasuki is very long.

“The list comprises very prominent Nigerians, including former Heads of State, many traditional rulers from the North and the South.

“Several religious leaders from the two dominant religions in the country also got funds from the ONSA.

“A former President of the country, who was sick, was flown out of the country to Germany for medical treatment. In fact, the former ONSA paid for the three trips the former leader made to Germany.”

It was learnt that the prosecution team was opposed to an open trial of Dasuki as this could result in disturbing revelations on how the $2.1bn under probe was disbursed.

The arms panel also established that the procurement processes adopted for the purchase of military hardware were arbitrarily and generally characterised by irregularities and fraud.

The highly-placed security official said the panel had interrogated some of the indicted officials, serving and retired officers, and some contractors.

The PUNCH learnt that the Federal Government would soon make public the final report just like it did with the interim report.

Barely three months after he assumed office in 2015, Buhari inaugurated a 13-man panel to probe procurement of arms and related military contracts between 2007 and 2015.

The panel had submitted two interim reports, where several serving and retired military officers were indicted.

Those indicted in the first two reports included Dasuki; a former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh (retd.); two former Chiefs of Army Staff – Lt. Gen. Azubike Ihejirika (retd.), and Lt. Gen. Kenneth Minimah (retd.) – and ex-Chiefs of Air Staff, Air Marshal M. D. Umar (retd.), and Air Marshal Adesola Amosu (retd.).

Others indicted were Maj. Gen. E. R. Chioba (retd.), AVM I. A. Balogun (retd.), AVM A. G. Tsakr (retd.), AVM A. G. Idowu (retd.), AVM A. M. Mamu, AVM O. T. Oguntoyinbo,  AVM T. Omenyi, AVM J. B. Adigun and AVM R. A. Ojuawo.

Among those also indicted were AVM J. A. Kayode-Beckley, Air Cdre S. A. Yushau (retd.), Air Cdre A. O. Ogunjobi, Air Cdre G. M. Gwani, Air Cdre S. O. Makinde, Air Cdre A. Y. Lassa and Col. N. Ashinze.

Several contractors, former ministers and government officials are currently being prosecuted for the roles they played in the disbursement of the funds.

In one of the interim reports, the panel said, “The procurement processes were arbitrarily carried out and generally characterised by irregularities and fraud.

“In many cases, the procured items failed to meet the purposes they were procured for, especially for the counter-insurgency efforts in the North-East.

“A major procurement activity undertaken by ONSA for NAF was that concerning the contracts awarded to Societe D’ Equipment Internationaux Nig. Limited between January 2014 and February 2015. NAF awarded 10 contracts totalling $930,500,690 to SEI Nig. Ltd.

“Letters of award and End User Certificates for all the contracts issued by NAF and ONSA respectively did not reflect the contract sums.

“Rather, these were only found in the vendor’s invoices, all dated March 19, 2015.”

A statement credited to the presidential spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina, had said the Ode-led panel “comes against the background of the myriad of challenges that the Nigerian Armed Forces have faced in the course of ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the North-East, including the apparent deficit in military platforms with its attendant negative effects of troops’ morale.”

He added, “The committee will specifically investigate allegations of non-adherence to correct equipment procurement procedures and the exclusion of relevant logistics branches from arms procurement under past administrations, which, very often resulted in the acquisition of sub-standard and unserviceable equipment.”

It was not clear on Thursday if the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had received a copy of the report or not, which was said to contain a list of those for further investigation and prosecution.

The spokesman for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, said he did not have information on the subject.

When asked if the commission had received the report, he simply said, “I don’t know.”

Babangida received Jonathan in his private living room as against the common visitors’ room located downstairs where he usually received ordinary visitors.

The details of the discussions between the former Nigerian leaders were not made known to journalists.

But it was gathered according to Punch Newspaper that IBB and Jonathan held a closed-door meeting for about 50 minutes. While the meeting was going on, it was gathered that  Yuguda and Oghiadome were left at the living room downstairs.

Sources hinted that despite the fact that the details of the meeting with IBB was not disclosed,  the discussion might not be unconnected with the President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption war and how it had been affecting Jonathan’s relations, particularly his wife, Patience.

Unconfirmed sources added that the meeting might have discussed the postponed Edo State governorship election, the 2019 general election as well as the state of affairs in the People Democratic Party.

It was also learnt that the duo of IBB and Abdulsalami in the separate meetings with Jonathan raised concern over the spate of bombings going on in the Niger Delta by the Niger Delta Avengers and the need to stop the trend.

It was observed that while the meeting lasted at both residences of the two former leaders, visitors were not allowed into the houses.

Jonathan left Minna at about 1pm.

2019: A Battle Of Old Foes? IBB Campaign Posters Filter Online

IBB, Ibrahim Babangida
Though the former military leader, Ibrahim Gbadamosi Babangida has said in different fora that he would not delve into any elective political position in Nigeria again due to his age, but his 2019 presidential posters have filtered on social media.

Some facebook users shared the poster with the opposition Peoples Democratic Party's logo and the inscription, 'CHANGE THE CHANGE'

In Nigeria, our leaders often say something in the morning and in evening say a contrary. This is a country where anything goes.

We would not be surprised if the aged Babangida, popularly known as IBB is being recalled from political retirement to vie for the Presidency.

Nigeria in deep economic mess, funny enough, some desperate political  gladiator my call on the ex-military leader to face an old foe, the incumbent, President Muhammadu Buhari

Could this be a kind of PDP joker of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP for the 2019 Presidential election? Let keep our fingers crossed, time will definitely tell.

Why IBB Actually Overthrew Me - Buhari Opens Up After 31yrs

Why IBB Actually Overthrew Me - Buhari Opens Up After 31yrs

Why IBB Actually Overthrew Me - Buhari Opens Up After 31yrs
President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed the major reason he was overthrown as head of state in 1985 by the Ibrahim Babangida led coup.

In an exclusive interview published in the current edition of The Interview magazine, Buhari said senior military leaders ousted him in August 1985 to save themselves from his wrath owing to his crusade against corruption in the military

After himself coming to power in 1983 via a coup, Buhari was deposed two years later by a coup led by Ibrahim Babangida, a retired general and former military president, Aliyu Gusau, former director of military intelligence (DMI), and other members of the ruling supreme military council (SMC) , and he was detained in Benin until 1988.

Recalling the incidents that happened 31 years ago, he challenged Babangida and Gusau to tell the truth on why they carried out the coup against him.

“I learnt that Aliyu Gusau, who was in charge of intelligence, took import licence from the ministry of commerce, which was in charge of supplies and gave it to Alhaji Mai Deribe,” he said.

“It was worth N100,000, a lot of money at that time. I confronted them and took the case to the Army council in a memo…I wanted Gusau punished.”

In a statement on www.theinterview.com.ng, Azu ishiekwened, managing director/editor-in-chief of The Interview, said “this is one edition that won’t let sleeping dogs lie”.

He recalled that Babangida had told The Interview in its December edition that there was nothing in the memo that Buhari said he submitted to the army council.

“Don’t forget that I was one of Buhari’s closest aides. I was the chief of army staff. So, I had an important position, an important role to play within that administration. I don’t think it had to do with a memo,” Babangida said back then.

But in a tone which revealed that the past may neither have been forgotten nor forgiven, Buhari challenged Babangida and Gusau to come clean on why they removed him, asking The Interview to choose whose story to believe.

He also fielded questions about his health, the 2016 budget, the pace of his government, former President Goodluck Jonathan and why he handed three ministerial portfolios to Babatunde Fashola, former governor of Lagos state.

Buhari’s current anti-corruption crusade has claimed its biggest casualties in the military, with Sambo Dasuki, former national security adviser having been in detention since 2015 over the $2.1bn arms scandal.

Earlier in the month, said after receiving the third interim report of the committee auditing the procurement of arms between 2007 and 2015, the president ordered the investigation of Azubuike Ihejirika, former chief of army staff, and Kenneth Minimah, his successor .

In all, 18 serving and retired military personnel, 12 serving and retired public officials and 24 chief executive officers of companies, were recommended for investigation.
