Ondo governorship: PDP professionals congratulate Jegede, Makarfi, urges Sheriff, Ibrahim to support them

JEGEDE
The National PDP Professionals and Business Group (NPPBG) has congratulated the National Caretaker Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi and the party’s flag bearer in this weekend’s governorship election in Ondo State, Eyitayo Jegede over the land mark victories it got in both the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.

In a press statement Thursday, the National Coordinator of NPPBG, Dr. Arome Salifu said the confirmation by the Court of Jegede as the party’s candidate for the Ondo election is a reflection of the wishes and desires of millions of party members and supporters worldwide.

While reiterating the confidence of the NPPBG in the ability of the Makarfi led caretaker committee to get the party out of its current crises, Dr. Salifu urged Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, erstwhile party flag bearer, Jimoh Ibrahim and other members of their faction to collapse their structures in support of the wish of the people.

The NPPBG which is an arm of the party has not spared any effort in trying to restore peace and harmony back into the erstwhile ruling party.

Dr. Salifu also congratulated Governor Olusegun Mimiko and millions of party faithful in Ondo State on the hard earned victory. He urged them not to be discouraged by the time spent pursuing the court victory but to mobilise voters en-masse and ensure Jegede’s victory on Saturday.

“We cannot afford to lose Ondo State to any other party and so no effort should be spared to ensure victory for the PDP at the Ondo governorship poll,” he said.

Ondo PDP Governorship Appeal Against Jimoh Ibrahim, Here Is What The Court Says Today

eyitayo jegede
The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Wednesday reserved judgment in the appeal filed by the substituted governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, challenging his replacement with Jimoh Ibrahim who belongs to a rival faction of the PDP.

Acting on the orders made by Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja on June 29 and October 14, 2016, the Independent National Electoral Commission had dropped Jegede who belongs to the Ahmed Makarfi-led faction and replaced him with Ibrahim as the party’s flag bearer of the party in the forthcoming November 26 election in Ondo State.

Ibrahim belongs to another faction of the PDP led by Ali Modu Sheriff.

The Justice Ibrahim Saulawa-led appeal panel allowed Jegede’s counsel, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), to adopt his client’s appellant’s brief, despite stiff opposition put up by the counsel for the first to ninth respondents in the case, Mr. Ben Nwofor (SAN).

PDP Offered Me N500m To Rig Election - Undaunted Ondo INEC Chief Opens Up

Olusegun Agbaje,
The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ondo State, Mr. Olusegun Agbaje, yesterday, while denying bribery allegation made against him by one of the candidates contending for the governorship ticket of the PDP in Ondo State, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim, said he had repeatedly spurned invitations from a serving governor, adding that Ibrahim’s grouse against him was that he refused a request for them to meet in London.

Agbaje said Ibrahim approached him through one of his friends who is currently residing in London. Agbaje, who is the Ondo State’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, also revealed how he was at a point offered N500 million to rig the last governorship election in Osun State in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, when he was serving there.

Agbaje, who spoke at a dialogue session with a coalition of over 60 Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, led by the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre, PLAC, said he rejected the money, which he said was brought in a van at night by certain chieftains of the PDP.

The Ondo REC, who said he was a former Director of the Department of State Service, DSS, revealed the money was offered to him at the IBB Golf Course in Abuja, after one of his former colleagues in the DSS, hoodwinked him into following him to the venue.

“So it baffles me now to see allegations being raised against me. I have never met Jimoh Ibrahim in my life. I have never spoken with him in my life. There is one of my friends, an old friend, Mr. Austin Obiagwu who was a former Managing Director of Broad Bank which later merged with Union Bank. He called me sometimes in April this year and said Segun how now, long time! He said when will I come to London, that he has been there for some time. I said ok, that I might be in London later in that April for the ceremony of one of my children and that I will see him then.

“He then told me that there is a friend of his that would want to meet me and that his name is Jimoh Ibrahim. I think he said he was in Accord Party. Either Accord or Alliance Party, I can’t remember. That was in April this year; he was certainly not in PDP then.

“I told my friend that I don’t know him (Ibrahim) and that I have never met him in my life and that I don’t think it is proper for me to see him because I made it a personal policy not to have such interaction with politicians.’’

Speaking on the Osun bribery attempt, he said; ‘’One of his colleagues “picked” him at the end of a conference he attended in Abuja and took him to the meeting where the bribe was allegedly offered. Agbaje said he was shocked and immediately berated his friend.”

“I told them that all my children have been trained and they are all married. I have a house in Lagos and another in Ekiti where I come from. So I don’t know what I will use money for at this age. I told them politely that I would not be part of their deal.”
He said: “The governor in my state had wanted to see me in the government house and I told him that this year, I am not coming to that Government House. He wanted to come to my house and I said you cannot come to my house.”

“I was the ICS of Anambra State, the then governor, who was a candidate, came to my office, he brought money to my office and I said Sir, we do not accept money, that my headquarters had provided all we needed for that election and as Director of the SSS in that region we don’t need the money.”

“The man was annoyed. He said whether I have seen the other people in the other party and I said Sir you don’t know me, that I knew him when he was Permanent Secretary at Dodan Barrack, that if not because he was a very old I would have known what to do. But very politely told him that we didn’t need his money.

“These are some of the circumstances in which I found myself in the past. I was so much flabbergasted when I was reading Punch of upper Sunday and saw that Jimoh Ibrahim mentioned a lot of things against me. I have written to my Chairman on this whole issue to clear my name, as well as asked for two prayers- to address the press and to also go to court.  The Chairman has approved the two. ”

“Ladies and gentlemen, I have never met Jimoh Ibrahim before, the allegations are false and at the appointed time I will take action. Like I said, politicians think that they can always buy everybody, but I told them that the Chairman did not send me to Akure to go and be in favour of a particular candidate.”

Ondo Election: We're Tired Of Your Cases - Appeal Court Judge Blasts PDP

Ondo Election: We're Tired Of Your Cases - Appeal Court Judge Blasts PDP

Olusegun Mimiko
A Justice of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ignatius Agube, who is on the panel examining the Peoples Democratic Party’s ticket for the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo State, said on Friday that if PDP members had resolved their issues internally, they would not be washing their dirty linen in public.

He said the party’s failure to internalise democracy within its fold over the years was the cause of its problems; saying that ordinarily, the court had no business resolving its internal disputes.

Agube called on the party to put its house in order and stop belabouring the court with its problems.

He said this while reacting to issues generated during the Friday’s proceedings, when two lawyers representing the Ahmed Makarfi and Ali Modu Sheriff factions of the party rose to make conflicting prayers in respect of the appeal filed by the Makarfi camp.

Agube said, “I have stressed this fact before now. I said in Kwara and Yobe that there was need for the PDP to internalise democracy.

“If they had resolved their issues internally, they would not be here washing their dirty linen in public. Ordinarily, the courts have no business resolving your internal disputes.”

Acting on the orders made by Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja on June 29 and October 14, 2016, the Independent National Electoral Commission had dropped Eyitayo Jegede, who is of Makarfi’s faction, and replaced him with Jimoh Ibrahim as the PDP’s governorship candidate in the state.

There are now about six pending appeals filed by the Makarfi-led faction, and Jegede and others seeking an order compelling INEC to drop Ibrahim and reinstate Jegede as the governorship candidate of the party in the state.

During the Friday’s proceedings, Adedayo Adeyeye and Ben Obi of the Makarfi faction announced that they were representing the PDP, while another set of people, including Cairo Ojougboh (Modu Sheriff camp) also claimed to be representing the PDP, a development that infuriated Justice Agube.

The panel headed by Justice Ibrahim Saulawa of the Calabar division of the Court of Appeal, adjourned all pending applications in the appeals to November 7 for hearing.

The panel adjourned till Monday despite requests by lawyers to the appellants, including Wole Olanipekun (SAN) and Ahmed Raji (SAN) that their preliminary applications be heard promptly in view of the urgency required by the matter.

Ondo PDP Guber Brouhaha: Uncertainty As Judges Withdraw, Suspend Ruling Indefinitely; You'll Be Shocked Why

Ondo PDP Guber Brouhaha: Uncertainty As Judges Withdraw, Suspend Ruling Indefinitely; You'll Be Shocked Why

Mimiko Jimoh Ibrahim
The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Tuesday suspended indefinitely its hearing into motions brought by the Ahmed Makarfi faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The appeal court said its decision followed a petition filed by one of the parties in the matter on Monday.

A panel of three judges led by Jumai Sankey said that its integrity was compromised by a petition filed against it by Biyi Poroye, a member of the PDP faction led by former Borno State governor, Ali Sheriff.

Ms. Sankey said the petition was forwarded to the President of the Court of Appeal, Zainab Bulkachuwa. She said the petitioner alleged that the court, under her leadership, was prone to being compromised for financial gains.

Subsequently, the three judges on the panel withdrew their participation in the case, pending the determination of the petition by the judicial body responsible for the investigating such matters, the National Judicial Council, NJC.

Ms. Sankey said a copy of the petition was also sent to the NJC.

She said her panel would return the case files to the President of the Appeal Court.

The court was scheduled to decide on the validity or otherwise of previous judgements from lower courts on the crisis within the PDP.

A faction of the party led by former Kaduna State governor, Ahmed Makarfi, and another by former Borno State governor, Ali Sheriff, have for months battled in court over the leadership of the PDP.

As part of that battle, the faction led by Mr. Makarfi had approached the appeal court to seek nullification of previous decisions by a Federal High Court presided over by Okon Abang which has affected that faction’s candidate for the November 26 governorship election in Ondo State.

Mr. Abang had on October14 given an order in furtherance of his June 29 decision where he had asked the Independent National Electoral commission, INEC, to recognise the faction led by Mr. Sheriff.

In his October 14 ruling, Mr. Abang nullified the listing by INEC of the candidate of Mr. Makarfi’s faction, Eyitayo Jegede, for the Ondo State governorship election.

The judge said the decision was premised on his June 29 judgement where his court declared as null and void the proceedings of the PDP convention which appointed a caretaker committee with Mr. Makarfi as chairman.

Shortly after that decision, the Makarfi caretaker committee approached the appellate court to demand a stay of execution of Mr. Abang’s October 14 decision.

At that time, Mr. Jegede had been recognised by INEC as the party’s flag bearer and the supporters of the Makarfi-led faction said the status quo should be maintained, pending the determination of their appeal at the appellate court.

Mr. Jegede also approached Mr. Abang’s court, according to the rules of the Federal High Court, to seek his permission to appeal the October 14 judgement. That appeal was denied by Mr. Abang on October 27.

During his ruling on Mr. Jegede’s application, Mr. Abang reiterated his decision that Mr. Ibrahim remains the authentic candidate for the PDP in the coming election of Ondo State.

In deference to the October 27 decision of the Federal High Court, INEC withdrew its recognition of Mr. Jegede and had him replaced by Mr. Ibrahim.

Consequently Mr. Jegede and other members of the party from Mr. Makarfi’s faction made further appeals to the Appeal Court demanding that it strikes out the June 29 ruling by the Federal High Court as well as that of October 14.

Those appeals were what the appellate court was scheduled to determine on Tuesday.

INEC had said Mr. Ibrahim would remain the candidate of the party in Ondo until a ruling by the appeal court.

Ondo: Gov. Mimiko Switches Support To Akeredolu To Effect Done Deal With Buhari, Allies To Defect To APC On Thursday

mimiko and akeredolu
Allies of  Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko are already opening discussions with certain leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), following the court pronouncement which stripped their anointed candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the November 26 governorship election.

According to Daily Sun, Gov. Mimiko is contemplating a deal that would ensure that he pulled the string to ensure victory for the APC candidate, Rotimi Akeredolu, while his role would ultimately be acknowledged and rewarded by leadership of the APC.

The source, who revealed that Mimiko’s meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari was actually facilitated by a former South-West governor and minister in Buhari’s cabinet, further disclosed that in the event that Jegede could not retrieve the ticket at the Court of Appeal, the outgoing governor would ask his  supporters to line behind Akeredolu, the APC candidate.

But Governor Mimiko has since denied the purported deal with APC. Mimiko, who spoke with Daily Sun through his media aide, Eni Akinsola, said there was no reason for him to dump Jegede for candidate of a rival party, Akeredolu.

The Court of Appeal will tomorrow sit on the appeal filed by Eyitayo Jegede whose name as the PDP standard bearer for the governorship election was removed by  the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and substituted with Jimoh Ibrahim.

The former Attorney General of Ondo State had emerged as the party’s candidate at the primary organised  by the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led faction while Ibrahim picked the ticket at a parallel primary organised  by the Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff leadership held in Ibadan, oyo State.

The electoral body had last Thursday deleted Jegede’s name from its list of eligible candidates for the election fixed for November  26, in compliance with the ruling of Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

While ruling on an application filed by the factional chairman and secretary of the PDP in Ondo State, Prince Biyi Poroye and Ademola A. Genty,  Abang ordered INEC to “accept and process for the purpose of its functions and activities in the organisation and conduct of the Ondo State governorship election only the nomination of Ibrahim, who emerged from the primary election conducted by the 1st and 2nd plaintiffs/applicants, as candidate of the second defendant (PDP) in the Ondo governorship election.”

He also ordered INEC to “reject and jettison any other nomination submitted to it by any other person(s) apart from the first and second plaintiffs/applicants, indicating that no other person, apart from Ibrahim, is the candidate of the 2nd defendant for the governorship election.”

Meanwhile, a gale of defection has hit the state chapter of the party. Daily Sun gathered that certain chieftains of the party who have decided to dump the party would be received by the national leadership of the APC, billed to storm Akure on Thursday, for the official flag off of the campaign.

Among those expected to defect are former governorship aspirant and former director general of the National Sports Commission,  Gbenga Elegbeleye; former member of the state House of Assembly,  Thompson Otito Atikase and a former lawmaker, Afolabi Iwalewa.

Elegbeleye and Atikase in separate telephone interviews confirmed the development. Atikase said he was not comfortable with the development in the PDP and accused the outgoing state governor of running the party aground.

‘’I am a practical politician, I don’t deceive myself. Mimiko has destroyed this party because of Jegede and there is no way we can win the election. So, there is no point staying back. I am going to declare officially for APC on Thursday,” he said.

EXPOSED: How Lawyers Got 'Backdoor' Court Victory For Ibrahim
Punch Newspaper - The Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has picked holes in the orders of the Federal High Court recognising  Jimoh Ibrahim as the party’s governorship candidate ahead of the November 26 election in Ondo State.

The Makarfi faction, in a counter-affidavit filed before the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, on Saturday, also faulted the roles played by lawyers engaged by the rival leadership faction of the PDP led by Ali Modu Sheriff in obtaining the court orders.

The caretaker committee faction filed the counter-affidavit in response to an objection filed by the Sheriff faction of the PDP, asking the Court of Appeal to discontinue the appeal commenced by the Makarfi’s rival faction against the order of the Federal High Court.

A special panel of the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, led by Justice Jumai Sankey, was set up to deal with the cases that emanated from the orders made by Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja on October 14, which  recognised Ibrahim as the authentic governorship candidate of the PDP in Ondo State.

The Makarfi faction of the PDP and others, including Jegede, have since filed about eight different cases primarily seeking leave to appeal against the Federal High Court orders.

They needed to first obtain the leave because they were not parties to the suit which Justice Abang made the orders.

They also need another leave to file their appeals because they failed to do so within 90 days of the delivery of the June 29 judgment of the Federal High Court.

Three of the cases have so far been withdrawn, leaving five pending.

But the Sheriff faction , on October 27, filed an objection to the cases filed by the Makarfi faction in the appeal numbered CA/A/551/2016, on the grounds that the Makarfi group did not receive the authority of the party to commence the legal action at the Court of Appeal.

In its response contained in the counter-affidavit filed against Sheriff’s faction’s objection to the appeal, the Makarfi camp  stated that the lawyers engaged by Sheriff deliberately hid the suit before the Federal High Court from legitimate authorities of the parties and went ahead to act as both the plaintiffs’ and respondents’ lawyers in the case.

The Makarfi faction also stated that the lawyers engaged by the Sheriff’s faction did not have the authority of the party to challenge the appeal.

Out of the eight cases originally filed in respect of the Ondo State PDP matters , only five of the cases filed by Jegede, PDP and Makarfi are left pending.

The appeal panel fixed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (of this week) for further hearing in the cases.

Crisis has reportedly erupted in Ondo State yesterday over the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to drop Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, the anointed candidate of Governor Olusegun Mimiko and the factional Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Ahmed Makarfi for the bussiness mogul and Senator Ali Modu Sheriff PDP faction candidate, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim, News Punch understands.

Facts according to New Telegraph are beginning to emerge on how a purported political solution to the nomination crisis trailing the PDP for the November 26th governorship election in Ondo State crashed like a pack of card.

According to a source privy to the undercurrent moves in both Makarfi and Modu-Sherrif’s camp, the issue over who will be the standard bearer between both factions shouldn’t have degenerated to the level it got yesterday, whereby INEC had to resort to a court ruling before listing a candidate for the party ahead of the poll.

According to the source, “Mimiko’s camp underrated Jimoh and one is amused that a political general like Mimiko will watch and see his house come down easily like this.

There were several effort made by some stakeholders with the intention of reaching a feasible truce where both interests will be satisfied but ego, over confidence and misplaced priority didn’t allow the Mimiko Camp to bend.

“I can tell you for free that Mimiko and Ibrahim used to be friends, in fact, there was a pact between them both in 2012 when Mimiko was about to seek re-election as governor but after the election, things didn’t work out between them especially on the ‘agreement’ on bringing Jimoh on board as a consultant on economic issues.

“A legal trap was set for them by the Sherrif’s faction of the Ondo PDP who waited for two weeks to end of INEC’s nomination window before approaching the Court to validate Jimoh based on a ruling last June.

Interestingly, they didn’t join Jegede in the suit but only INEC, who they knew won’t appeal the judgement.” Another reliable source told Saturday Telegraph that the Mimiko camp refused to seize the advantage of a political solution dangled before them but rather chose to ignore and call the acclaimed billionaire names.

“Instead for them to seek peace with Jimoh Ibrahim, they rather chose to be begging Modu-Sheriff, who incidentally unknown to them was using them as pun. What he (Sheriff) said that he won’t pressurise the INEC on which candidate to pick between both factions, was as a result of intense heat on me to step down on the candidature of Jimoh.

Everyone knows that Jimoh cannot ordinarily win election but ignoring him completely is also political suicidal,

“Jimoh Ibrahim was expecting them to approach him for a political truce but they felt they should rather appease Sheriff.

For Jimoh, it’s not a do-or-die affair but he always insists that the candidate of the PDP must come the South. He was ready to step down but not for Jegede. He wanted to step down for Mimiko’s former Commissioner, Sola Ebiseni, who defected to the APC.

But they wouldn’t want to listen to anything other than Jegede who is from the Central.”

JImoh Ibrahim: INEC Action Might Set Ondo On Fire - Olusegun Mimiko warns

olusegun mimiko
Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State on Friday alerted President Muhammadu Buhari of the potential danger of the declaration of Jimoh Ibrahim as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state, warning that the move by INEC could cause a conflagration in the state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had yesterday removed the name of Eyitayo Jegede of the PDP from the list of the candidates of the political parties that would participate in the November 26 governorship election and replaced it with that of Ibrahim.
Speaking with State House correspondents shortly after meeting behind closed-doors with Buhari at the Presidential Villa, he expressed reservations over the ability of INEC to conduct a credible election in the state.

The Governor said there was no moral justification for what the INEC did, describing Ibrahim’s declaration as injustice and mischief.

He said the President has promised to look into it and that if there is any injustice, assuring that it will be rectified.

REVEALED: Why INEC Actually Dropped Jegede For Jimoh As PDP Ondo Guber Candidate Despite New Court Order

Eyitayo Jegede and Jimoh Ibrahim

Until the commission released the final list of all the candidates that would contest the election, on Thursday evening, the name of Jegede was put on its website as the candidate of the PDP, report according to Punch Newspaper says

It was gathered that INEC, in a letter sent to the Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Segun Agbaje, the commission described the list as final.

The letter conveying the list was signed by the Secretary to the Commission, Mr. Augusta Ogakwu.

The emergence of Ibrahim came on the heels of a ruling by a Federal High Court in Abuja, which rejected a move by Jegede to appeal against the recognition of Ibrahim as the candidate of the PDP.

Specifically, Justice Okon Abang, on Thursday, dismissed the application by Jegede on the grounds that he lacked the locus standi to file it.

Jegede had by his application sought the leave of the court to appeal against the judgment directing INEC to recognise Ibrahim as the party’s candidate.

The October 14, 2016, judgment of the court which Jegede sought to appeal was for the enforcement of an earlier verdict of the same court delivered on June 29, 2016, and which directed INEC to only accept the list of PDP candidate submitted by the Biyi Poroye-led executive in the state.

But in his ruling on Thursday Justice Abang held that the application lacked merit.

While striking it out, the judge held that Jegede was not mentioned in the substantive matter and, as such, he lacked the locus standi to seek leave to appeal the judgment.

The judge ruled, “He (Jegede) also lacked the right to be joined in the main suit and, as such, he cannot be joined thereafter or have the right to appeal the judgment. He is not entitled to appeal.

“There is nothing from the records of the court leading to the judgment of June 29, showing that the applicant has interest in the matter.”

But a High Court sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital, earlier in the day restrained INEC from removing the name of Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) as the candidate of the PDP for the November 26, 2016, governorship election.

Justice William Olamide gave the ruling on Thursday based on an ex-parte motion brought before the court by the Clement Faboyede-led PDP faction in the state.

An Abuja High Court had on October 15 ordered the electoral commission to remove Jegede’s name for the name of Ibrahim.

In his ruling, Justice Olamide said that it would be out of order for INEC to replace Jegede’s name, pending the determination of the motion on notice, saying doing such would contravene the principles of equity, justice and fairness.

SHOCKER: INEC Defies Court Order As Jimoh Ibrahim, Olusola Oke Names MISSING On Final Guber Candidate List, See Full List
It appears the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has shunned the court order that asked it to recognize business mogul, Jimoh Ibrahim of the Senator Sheriff’s faction of the People’s Democratic Party as the authentic governorship candidate of the party ahead of the November governorship election.

On the list, Akin Enoch Zerubabel Olowookere and his 72-year old running mate, Yahaya Ipinloju was listed.

Similarly, the former legal adviser of PDP, Olusola Oke also lost out in the power tussle within the Alliance for Democracy (AD) as his name was missing in the list released by the electoral body. Oke who had last year pitched his tent with the All Progressives Congress (APC) came distance third in the governorship primary of the APC behind Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN and Tinubu’s loyalist, Dr Abraham, but had to abandon the progressives train again to pick the AD’s ticket.

Though the state executive of the AD allegedly gave him the ticket the national working committee of AD rejected him, hence his failure to make the eventual final list of governorship candidates.

The released list according to INEC is the final list of the candidates participating in the November 26 governorship election in Ondo State.

On the list, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) is seen as the flag-bearer for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Rotimi Akeredolu as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Conspicuously, the names of Jimoh Ibrahim and Olusola Oke were omitted from the final list released by the commission.

Ibrahim is the factional candidate of the PDP while Oke is the candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD)

It would be recalled that a Federal High Court had ordered INEC to recognize Ibrahim as the PDP candidate in the Ondo election.

ONDO Election: INEC Counter-Accused PDP Ondo Factional Gov. Candidate, Jimoh Ibrahim Of Attempt To Bribe REC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has accused Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim of attempting to compromise the Ondo State Resident Electoral Commission (REC), Mr. Olusegun Agbaje.

The commission also restated its earlier position that there was no truth in Ibrahim’s allegation that its Acting Director, Legal Services, Mrs. Toyin Babalola, demanded $1 million from him to comply with court order recognising him as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Ondo State governorship election. Ibrahim had, at a press conference on Sunday, alleged that Agbaje “requested to hold a meeting with him (Ibrahim) in London in the United Kingdom.”

He, therefore, called for Agbaje’s removal as Ondo REC as he would not conduct a credible election on November 26. But in a statement yesterday by Prince Adedeji Soyebi, National Commissioner in Charge of Publicity, INEC said Ibrahim was economical with the truth. According to the commission, it was Ibrahim, who through an intermediary, tried to arrange a meeting with the Ondo State REC in London.

“This, Mr. Agbaje promptly declined and insisted that if Mr. Ibrahim wanted to see him (Agbaje), he was free to do so at the Ondo State INEC office during official hours.

“Therefore, Mr. lbrahim’s allegation cannot be the correct account of what actually took place,” the statement added. The commission also said there was no time when Babalola demanded $1 million bribe from Ibrahim before she could act on Justice Okon Abang’s court order.

It added that preliminary investigation revealed that “Mr. Ibrahim turned up at the INEC headquarters, Abuja unannounced, made his way to Mrs. Babalola’s office, brandished a copy of the court document and insisted that INEC should accept him as the official candidate of the PDP for the Ondo governorship poll.

“On sighting the unexpected guest, Mrs. Babalola called three other lawyers in her department to witness her encounter with Mr. Ibrahim and politely told him that the commission was already in possession of the court document.

“At no time during the encounter that lasted less than 15 minutes did Mrs. Babalola ask for $1million. “Therefore, the allegation by Mr. Ibrahim is false.” INEC noted that court orders/judgements are served by court bailiffs and not individual parties.

It also added that the commission only receives nomination papers from the national chairmen of political parties or their designated officials and not aspirants.

The commission assured that it will never succumb to any form of blackmail or intimidation, but will remain focused on its determination to deliver free, transparent and credible elections, based on the rule of law.
