Ferguson To Return As Manchester United Head Coach By June

Ferguson To Return As Manchester United Head Coach By June

ALEX FERGUSON AND JOSE MOURINHO
Sir Alex Ferguson will return to the Old Trafford dugout to manage the Manchester United 2008 XI, in Michael Carrick’s testimonial game this year.

This was confirmed via the Premier League club’s official Twitter handle on Monday morning.

Ferguson stepped down as manager of the Red Devils after the 2012/2013 season.

Harry Redknapp, who managed the former England midfielder at West Ham United, will be in charge of the Michael Carrick All-Star XI.

“I think the best bit will be seeing the players, to be honest with you,” Ferguson told MUTV.

“No [I don’t miss managing]. I miss the big games of course but I made my decision and I’m enjoying it. I don’t have to worry about you lads or the agents or the press conferences and having to control that press secretary of mine!

“I’m delighted Michael is getting a testimonial. It tells you Manchester United are probably the only club in England that can do that. Players do tend to stay a long time here. We don’t have players here one minute and gone the next. If you go right back to my time, most of the players stayed 10 or even more years. I think we can be proud of that fact, being a family-type club. It encourages players to put roots down here and enjoy it.

“I read about what Michael’s intentions are [with the funds raised for the event] and I think it’s very honourable. I think he’s shown he’s prepared to share his success and his contribution to the charity, starting it himself, will be very, very worthwhile.”

The testimonial will be played on June 8 and kick-off is 4pm.

At Last, Mikel Obi's Dream To Join Manchester United Almost Done

At Last, Mikel Obi's Dream To Join Manchester United Almost Done

Mikel Obi
Should report according to the Sun UK newspapers is anything to go by, then Nigeria's Captain and Chelsea's prolific out of favour midfielder, John Obi Mikel may be on his way to join Coach Jose Mourinho in Manchester United.

According to The Sun UK's report, Jose Mourinho intends to sign Chelsea and Super Eagles midfielder John Mikel Obi in January.

Mourinho feels Mikel, who has a few months left in his Chelsea contact, will help improve Man U's midfield and is prepared to sign him in January when he knows he'll come cheap. Read the full report, after the cut.

Mikel, 29, has not played under new Stamford Bridge manager Antonio Conte and there are no plans to renew his contract which runs out this season.

Now the Man united boss is ready to take advantage with a cut-price New Year offer for the player the Red Devils thought they had signed ten years ago.

Mikel had just turned 19 when the Old Trafford outfit announced on their website that they had signed the teenager on a four-year contract from Norwegian club Lyn Oslo. The £4million transfer was done directly with the player and his club — bypassing his agents and he was even pictured in a United shirt. But Chelsea angrily claimed they had an agreement with the agents to buy him.

It was reported Obi started to get threatening phone calls and ended up having to take refuge in a safe hotel with a security guard.

He then went missing from Lyn amid stories he had been kidnapped.

The Nigerian midfielder had actually travelled to London where he went on Sky Sports TV to claim that he had been pressured into signing for United, something they denied, and he wanted to join the Blues.

The matter was resolved when Chelsea paid United £12m and Lyn £4m.

The Nigeria forward got a goal plus an assist to hand Pep Guardiola’s men derby victory to remain atop the English Premier League log.

Guardiola savoured a derby success over arch-rival Jose Mourinho on Saturday as Manchester City beat Manchester United 2-1 in an engrossing Premier League clash.

First-half goals from Kevin de Bruyne, a player Mourinho sold when he was at Chelsea to Wolfsburg and Kelechi Iheanacho sent City into a 2-0 lead in the first-half before a colossal error by Claudio Bravo gifted Zlatan Ibrahimovic a goal late in the half.

City held on to make it four wins from four and top the table while United slipped to their first defeat.

CONFIRMED: Louis van Gaal SACKED

CONFIRMED: Louis van Gaal SACKED

Louis van Gaal has been sacked by Manchester Old Trafford sources have confirmed.

The Dutchman led United to their first FA Cup triumph since 2004 on Saturday, with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, though celebrations were quickly overshadowed by speculation regarding Jose Mourinho's imminent arrival.

Van Gaal's two-year reign at Old Trafford proved divisive, with several fans and former players bemused by the Dutchman's playing style having seen United score just 49 league goals this season.

And after Van Gaal arrived at the club's Carrington training ground for work on Monday he was relieved of his duties. The 64-year-old remained cordial throughout the rest of the morning but his backroom staff were seen clearing their desks after being sacked along with the man who brought them to the club in 2014.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was also seen on site alongside one of the club's lawyer.

Mourinho has been out of work since he was sacked by Chelsea in December, but is poised to return at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal's departure comes two years after his appointment, with the manager guiding the club to a fourth-placed finish in his first season.

However, United missed out on qualification for the Champions League - which they exited at the group stages this term - in his second campaign despite spending around £250 million on new players during Van Gaal's reign.

United have now failed to finish in the top-three since Sir Alex Ferguson's last season in charge, when they won the league in 2012-13.

Ryan Giggs was also on site on Monday morning, but he left around an hour later. The Welshman's future is unknown with Mourinho's appointment as manager on the horizon.
