Nigerians, After The Victory On Terrorism, Who Wins The Peace? By Abdulkadir Inuwa Suleiman

Nigerians, After The Victory On Terrorism, Who Wins The Peace? By Abdulkadir Inuwa Suleiman

Tukur Buratai
Many Nigerians are still in limbo about the prevailing peace and the end signals of anti-terrorism campaigns, which Nigerian troops have spiritedly battled in the last one year to extract from Luciferic terrorists. But it is time to wake up to the piercing lights of reality.

It was in the media recently how Nigerian soldiers are still relentless, conducting clearance operations to fish out remnants and fleeing Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) in the Northeast. A statement credited to the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. SK Usman, disclosed that troops of 112 Task Force Battalion, 22 Brigade, Nigerian Army on Operation LAFIYA DOLE, have been conducting joint operations with local vigilantes and civilian JTF in suspected BTHs hideouts in some communities.

Troops have been intermittently engaged in patrolling, raiding of hideouts and cordoning operations in several villages and towns in the Northeast. And interestingly, troops noticed dead and live footprints of terrorists, some of whom were arrested; weapons and operational vehicles of insurgents seized; freed captives still held in bondage and recovered terrorists flags or emblems.
But an incident in the operations is particularly striking. Troops encountered and “…arrested the terrorists’ food storekeeper and recovered 2 Isuzu vehicles, grinding machines and vehicles' workshop.”

This is an unequivocal statement about the unwillingness of some elements in the same communities afflicted for years by insurgency, which have been rescued from terrorism to bid goodbye to the devilry. Not long ago, a politician and council boss in Borno state was arrested by soldiers. He harboured, fed and nurtured fleeing suspected terrorists in his residence. Of course, Nigerians are aware that elsewhere in the country, like in Lagos and Abuja, security agents have apprehended fleeing terrorists, who secretly relocated to these locations to explore avenues to cause more atrocities.

It is noteworthy to recount that since Sambisa forest was demolished by Nigerian troops, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai has consistently re-echoed the need for vigilance of members of the public to fish out fleeing terrorists who would sneak into villages, communities, towns and cities to recuperate and plan afresh. He intimated of his directives to the Army to maintain vigilance round the clock, to sustain the tempo of the defeat of insurgency in the country. And the military has lived up to this responsibility, as evident in the on-going clean-up operations in villages and towns in the Northeast.

But the freedom and peace troops have proudly won for all Nigerians by the defeat of Boko Haram must be perceived as a cherished and valuable asset, which all men and women of good conscience must seek to jealously protect. It is day-dreaming to think, the military alone can go the whole hog alone in cordoning every village, community or city in Nigeria to identify fleeing terrorists.

It is impossible for soldiers and indeed, even if all personnel of Nigeria’s security apparatuses are deployed to conduct a house to house or community to community search for fleeing insurgents. It is the more the duty of every Nigerian regardless of creed or affiliation to be his brother’s keeper by constantly looking out for fleeing insurgents in his vicinity. It is his obligation to instantly alert security agents of strange elements in their midst, with the character or tendencies of terrorism.

The scenario is now more deadly and scary, with the indiscernible, widespread and mixture of insurgents into sane communities. It is more worrisome with the incontestable evidence adduced recently to the effect of the sponsorship of Boko Haram terrorists by some dubious political characters and high profile Nigerians. It appears more probable now that the political wing of Boko Haram terrorism is wielding stronger, with the obliteration of religious wing of terrorism.

Therefore, it is the onerous responsibility of all Nigerians to secure this peace, by the rejection of sponsorship or shielding of terrorists from the beacons of security agents. All citizens of Nigeria, this beloved nation should decree today henceforth to become the unofficial security agents of their localities to facilitate the identification, arrest and flushing of fleeing terrorists, who escaped from Sambisa forest and other parts of the Northeast.

Failure to enlist in the project of preserving the hard-earned peace from Boko Haram terrorism would have dire consequences for such communities and Nigerians generally. It is imperative now more than ever that the civil population, co-operate and extend massive support to the Nigerian Army to enable them clip the wings of fleeing insurgents, who may disguise and take protective shelter in unsuspecting communities.

Nigerians should vow and covenant with their conscience that the labour of the Nigerian Army and the sacrifices they have endured, and for which some families are plunged into eternal pain and misery for losing their beloved ones to terrorists is not in vain.

This should be the proud duty of Community Based Organizations (CBOs), Civil Society organizations (CSOs) Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) traditional and community leaders, religious Organisations, professional bodies, human rights organizations, clannish associations, students unions, politicians, market associations, transport unions , citizens of Nigeria, visitors and a lot more.

It is therefore heart-breaking to discover that during troops clearance operations in the villages of Talwari, Agulari, Kirinari, Gubdori and Yale, a Nigerian who served terrorists as storekeeper still kept the insurgents equipment without willingly turning them over to security agents. It is bad enough that none of the community members or traditional heads alerted security agents, until troops’ surveillance operations uncovered it.

Although, no terrorist was found, but the sustenance of the weaponry store and the vehicle workshop is an indication that once insurgents regroup and stray into the area, they have ready access to the means of servicing their mobility machinery or where to store the lethal weapons. This disposition is extremely bad and should be discountenanced henceforth, because it is anti-peace.

The atmosphere of peace currently savoured in the Northeast and the entire country would once again become elusive, when minds, corrupted and focused on evil are allowed the laxity to mess it up. It is everyone’s responsibility to stop them in their tracks.

Security as repeatedly drummed is the collective responsibility of all, because when it is allowed to collapse or breached, it affects everybody, both far and near. The Nigerian Army has won the victory over terrorists; but mortgaging the sustenance of this peace to soldiers alone is unrealistic and a fatal mistake in the offing.

Nigerians must learn to imbibe the culture of not only being their brother’s keeper; but good brother's keepers. And it is a task not so difficult to accomplish, as all it requires is a good conscience nurtured by the fear of God, respect for sanctity of lives and vigilance.

Thus far, this posture would encourage soldiers to do more to secure citizens, having sensed the appreciation of Nigerians to their sacrifices. So, the burden of finally winning the peace coercively extracted from terrorists is on the shoulders of Nigerians, by the simple adherence to these security prescriptions.

SIR: It is with unimaginable tears of joy that I express my hearty congratulations on your victory against the deadly Boko Haram sect. The entire country has been thrown to a hysterical moment with the news of this victory. Big congratulations to you and our gallant soldiers who achieved this great feat. Words really can’t thank you all for your sacrifice and will to protect our fatherland at all cost. The timing of this triumph is perfect as we edge closer to a new year of renewed optimism.

For some years now, we have endured horrendous carnage in the hands of those terrorists. People, especially in the North-east, particularly Borno State, have been rendered homeless, businesses and properties shut down and vandalized, kept apart from their loved ones and psychologically living in anticipation of the worst. It is pathetic how we lived in fear, run at a fast acceleration with the strike of a flat tyre, filled with trepidation in market squares, viewing centres and social cum religious gatherings as our safety was under constant threat.

Perhaps it was a long wait. It is now fully deserved. The patient dog eats the fattest bone. Before now, many of us have ruled out the possibility of winning the war. And for those that remained hopeful for long, it faded gradually till the odds became apparently not in our favour. It looked as though Boko Haram have come to stay ad infinitum. But as reports emanate about the final assault by operation Lafiya Dole to invade the stronghold of their fortress: Sambisa forest, we grinned, prayed and had renewed hopes. And as such, we salute your efforts, for masterminding the final push that disgorged the sect to their demise. You and your men alone knew what ensued at the battleground that purged them to the embrace of your bullets and for that, we remain in your awe. This is a victory we have craved for, dreamt of and lived for!

While we continue to celebrate your triumph, it is imperative for us not to rest on our laurels and do the needful. The security conundrum has always been lack of preventive measures cum consistency. More often than not, we are not proactive; we wait to arrest the situation after the worst has been done. We are caught off guard in most cases because we fail to instill consistency in detecting, preventing and sustaining effective security measures. Now, this has to change. It must change. Boko Haram may have been defeated, but we must not slumber for a return to dark days. We must not give room for any terror group to ensconce themselves in our territory again.

The reward of your sacrifices is with God. May He reward you in plenitude. I also congratulate and appreciate the man whose strong will, alacrity and resolve to eradicate Boko Haram remains second to none since taking the mantle of leadership: President Muhammadu Buhari. Thank you. Wishing you all a prosperous new year ahead!

Following air strike that killed many insurgents and fatally wounded Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, the Nigerian troops on Operation LAFIYA DOLE stationed at Darul Jamel, on the fringes of Sambisa forest, northern parts of Borno State, Monday evening successfully repelled an attempted attack on their location by remnants of Boko Haram terrorists, killing two sect commanders in the process.

The terrorists attempted to storm the troop location at about 10.00pm, but paid dearly as the troops killed several of them including two senior commanders that led the attack.

The troops recovered 1 Light Machine Gun (LMG) with Registration number 56M-1101229, 1 AK-47 Rifle Magazine, Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) Bomb and 1 top cover of an AK-47 Rifle. Other items recovered include 395 Rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition and 15 rounds of 5.5mm by .45 ammunition.

Prior to the attack, the troops of the same unit on routine patrol earlier, had cleared an ambush staged by elements of the suspected remnants of the terrorists desperate for food near Banki Junction.

It is equally believed that the attack and ambush might not be unconnected to the fact that the terrorists were desperately targeting over 890 rescued herdsmen with their 5000 livestock being held captives by terrorists along Nigerian borders with Cameroon.

Troops Set Boko Haram Hideout Ablaze, Killed Many, Rescues Hostages In Clearance Operations

Troops Sets Boko Haram Hideout Ablaze, Killed Many, Rescues Hostages In Clearance Operations
Nigerian troops of 7 Division in Operation LAFIYA DOLE  have launched massive attacks on what it described as the remnants of Boko Haram terrorists, hideouts of the sects were burnt, many killed and abductees freed.

The Army Headquarters in a statement posted on facebook said during the operation, 10 terrorists were killed and one was captured alive. Unfortunately, 2 Civilian JTF accompanying the troops lost their lives. The troops rescued 7 civilians and recovered a Volkswagen Golf car, 15 bicycles and various bags of foodstuffs.

Below is the Full Statement:

In continuation of clearance operations of the remnants of Boko Haram terrorists, troops of 7 Division in Operation LAFIYA DOLE have been making tremendous progress in their various areas of operational responsibilities. They were able to carry out clearance operations, raids and patrols that resulted in the killing of so many suspected Boko Haram terrorists, arrests and rescue of persons, as well as recovery of arms and ammunitions.

On Thursday, 21st April 2016, troops of 21 Brigade Nigerian Army carried out clearance operations at Bulari, Tori 1, 2 and 3 during which they successfully cleared the general area of remnants of Boko Haram terrorists.

During the operation, 10 terrorists were killed and one was captured alive. Unfortunately, 2 Civilian JTF accompanying the troops lost their lives. The troops rescued 7 civilians and recovered a Volkswagen Golf car, 15 bicycles and various bags of foodstuffs.

The troops of 22 Brigade on the other hand intercepted 26 persons comprising mostly women and children, coming towards Adah village in Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State, who on interrogation stated that they were held hostage by Boko Haram terrorists, but escaped as their captors were moving towards Lake Chad general area because of troops presence.

Similarly, troops of the same Brigade carried out a fighting patrol, cordon and search operation on Thursday 21st April 2016, along Dikwa-Marte road, Kaje, Selenge, Manekura, Mane Gana and Gawayi villages. Although there wasn’t any encounter with the terrorists, the troops recovered 5 motorcycles, 6 Boko Haram terrorists flags and 4 bags of grinded corn in Mane Gana village. They also rescued 3 women and 5 children at the same village. The rescued persons told the troops that their husbands were actually Boko Haram terrorists who have ran away towards Lake Chad area due to immense pressure from the military clearance operations.

On their part, troops of 3 Battalion also conducted patrol towards Diema, Sigel and Kala in which they had an encounter with Boko Haram terrorists in which the gallant troops killed 8 of them and recovered 2 Dane Guns and 4 assorted batteries.

The troops of 7 Division Special Fighting Forces attached to 25 Task Force Brigade Damboa, at a checkpoint, arrested a suspected Boko Haram terrorist, Abubakar Bello and 6 other suspects carrying 28 gallons of “Turkey” brand of vegetable oil, 8 bags of flour, 130 crates of soft drinks and 2 bags of sugar. In addition, 5 mobile telephone handsets, 1 external hard drive and 5 flash drives, 2 national identity cards and the sum of Seventy Thousand Naira (N70,000.00k) only were recovered from him. Preliminary investigation discovered that the terrorists now dilute the vegetable oil with other substances to produce diesel to power their generators.

The troops of 254 Task Force Battalion in conjunction with vigilantes and Borno Youths Empowerment Scheme (BOYES), also carried out clearance operations at Mufurundi, Kaleri, Masemari, Bego, Bale, Gadzama and Gagantilo villages along Damboa-Bale-Gwoza road. During the operation, the troops encountered and detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), buried by the terrorists at Gadzama village. They also encountered Boko Haram terrorists at Bego where they engaged the terrorists, neutralized them and cleared their camps within the general area. In the encounter, the troops killed 9 Boko Haram terrorists and recovered 1 AK-47 rifle with registration number TH5712 and 17 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition. They also rescued 157 persons held hostages by the terrorists.

The troops of 26 Task Force Brigade stationed in Gwoza yesterday also intercepted 8 suspected Boko Haram terrorists, trying to enter Gwoza town. Though they claimed to be farmers coming from Shiadawey, Takwala and Amdaga Madachi villages respectively, which were known terrorists hideouts, preliminary investigations showed that they were indeed terrorists on a recruitment drive. This was made manifest when the sum of Six Hundred and Thirty Seven Thousand (N637,000.00k) Naira was discovered on Abdullahi Yakubu who was identified by another escapee/suspected Boko Haram terrorist as having trading links with the terrorists while the others were confirmed to have participated in carrying out various terrorists acts for the Boko Haram terrorists group. Similarly, one Ibrahim Bute aged 67 years, of Gobara village was arrested by the troops on suspicion of being a Boko Haram kingpin.

Troops of 114 Task Force Battalion of 28 Task Force Brigade also conducted a fighting patrol along Bitta-Madube-Izge axis same day.

The troops of 117 Task Force Battalion following a tip off, also arrested a suspected Boko Haram terrorist who gave his name as Bello Isah at Mugulvu village. The unit also discovered and retrieved 29 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) rounds of ammunition hidden at a farm in Gella village.

The troops in various deployments within the theatre remain vigilant with soaring morale and committed to their duties of clearing the remnants of the Boko Haram terrorists hiding in various remote corners and crannies.

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.
