Xenophobic Revenge: Nigerians Protesters Vandalize MTN Headquarters in Abuja

Xenophobic Revenge: Nigerians Protesters Vandalize MTN Headquarters in Abuja

Suspected vandals on Thursday attacked the regional head office of telecommunication giant, MTN in Abuja stealing phones, cash and also destroying vehicle and office equipment.

MTN head office
The vandals invaded the premises at 4 Madeira Street, Maitama armed with sticks and rods in retaliation for the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

An MTN worker said the staff ran to safety when the vandals invaded the premises. Police operatives however stopped the attack shortly afterwards.

Meanwhile, the Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Musa Kimo, has warned individuals and groups against indulging in acts that will result in the destruction of property and cause a breakdown of law and order in the nation’s capital, Daily Post reports

Kimo, only a few days ago took over from CP Mohammed Mustafa.

His warning came at the wake of the invasion of the office a telecommunication service provider, MTN at Maitama District, by some Nigerians on Thursday.

The spokesman in a statement made available to Daily Post expressed the CP’s condemnation of the attack.

He reiterated that while the Police as the custodian of law and order would remain professional in the discharge of its primary duty of the protection of lives and property, it “will not hesitate to apply the appropriate sections of the law in the prosecution of those arrested for causing the breakdown of law and order.

“The public is, therefore, enjoined to always adopt civil and legitimate channels in registering grievances instead of resorting to self-help and causing security breach”.

MTN Sacks Top Staff Over BRIBE Offered Buhari's Chief of Staff, Kyari

MTN Sacks Top Staff Over BRIBE Offered Buhari's Chief of Staff, Kyari

Amina Oyagbola
South African telecom giant, MTN, has fired one of its top and most valuable staffers in order to avoid scrutiny by the United States government over bribes offered to Abba Kyari, Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Shortly after helping to resolve a hefty fine imposed by the Nigerian government, Amina Oyagbola was so important to MTN that the company gave her two strategic positions. Her corporate elevation saw her combining leadership of the Human Resources department with the post of "Director of Strategic Communications" at MTN.

Ms. Oyagbola and her husband were instrumental in resolving MTN's serious problem with the Nigerian Presidency culminating in a massive $5.2 billion fine imposed on the company for ignoring the Nigerian government’s directive to ensure that all SIM cards were registered as a strategy to curb Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria's northeast.

An insider within the company and other sources in Abuja told our correspondent that, once the fine was imposed, Ms. Oyagbola recruited a close friend, Femi Lijadu, to act as a consultant for “strategic advisory services.” In that capacity, Mr. Lijadu was a member of the team that negotiated with the Federal Government to reduce the fine to $1.7 billion. One of our sources said Ms. Oyagbola and Mr. Lijadu once worked with presidential Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari at the United Bank for Africa.

Once the fine was reduced to about a third of the original sum, Ms. Oyagbola’s corporate star seemed to soar. However, MTN last week told her to step down from one of her two corporate positions. A source at MTN claimed that Mrs. Oyagbola decided to resign.

However, another source within the company told Saharareporters that the once powerful corporate player was fired after MTN’s bribe scandal with Mr. Kyari came to the notice of the MTN's parent company in South Africa. The source added that the decision to relieve Ms. Oyagbola was taken in order to avoid the consequences of a global disgrace should US authorities ask questions related to the company’s reported offer of an undisclosed sum as bribe to Mr. Kyari before the senior presidential aide helped broker a deal that lowered the fine earlier imposed by the government.

SUSPENSION Over MTN N500m Bribe: Kyari Breaks Silence
The Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Alhaji Abbah Kyari, on Friday, denied reports in a section of the media that he was suspended.

The chief of staff clarified that he was only on leave and had resumed.

Kyari, who made the clarification as he emerged from the president’s office, told State House correspondents that “Are you going to tweet that I am back?”

According to reports, the chief of staff was suspended on the recommendations of a panel purportedly set up by President Buhari to investigate allegations that Mr. Kyari collected N500million bribe to facilitate a reduction in the fine the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, imposed on MTN Nigeria for flouting directives on SIM card registration.

When asked to respond to rumours of his suspension, the chief of staff fired back “I don’t go on leave?”

Pressed further to speak on camera, he retorted, “I don’t talk to the press. You know my job doesn’t hold me talking”.

N500m MTN Bribe: Presidency Cabal Depleted As Buhari Suspends 'almighty' Kyari

N500m MTN Bribe: Presidency Cabal Depleted As Buhari Suspends 'almighty' Kyari

Abba Kyari
The cabal reportedly ruling the nation from the Presidency instead of President Muhammadu Buhari may have been depleted as fresh reports suggest that the President has suspended the second in command among the cabal, the Chief of Staff, Mr. Abba Kyari over the alleged N500 million telecom giant, MTN bribe.

Kyari is regarded as number two among the cabals in Presidency.

News Punch had few days ago published that Abba Kyari has been placed under investigation by the Special Investigation Panel of the Nigerian Police Force over bribery allegations as ordered by President Buhari

This is in connection with the $5 billion fine slammed on telecommunication giants, MTN last year by the government, as Kyari had allegedly taken a bribe to help MTN lessen the fine.

The probe according to Vanguard’s investigation is in connection with alleged N500million bribery money said to have been paid to the Chief of Staff by officials of South African owned MTN Telecommunications Company with the intent that the COS influence government to discontinue its heavy stance on the $5billion fine.

It would be recalled that the NCC, Nigeria’s telecoms regulator, slammed a $5 billion fine on MTN for failing to disconnect subscribers with unregistered phone lines bought before January 2012.

Following the frustrations of the telecommunications giant’s bid to fight the huge fine imposition, firstly through the courts and later through diplomatic means, Sahara Reporters published a report on 20th September 2016, stating that officials of MTN gave a bribe of N500million to Alhaji Abba Kyari, to intervene and use his closeness to President Buhari, to influence the federal government to give MTN a safe landing.

Worried by the allegation, the Presidency is said to have directed the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to investigate the allegation and come out with findings regarding the accusation.

Buhari's CoS, Kyari's Alleged Receipt Of N500m Bribe - MTN Breaks Silence
Following media reports that the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari allegedly received N500 million from the telecommunication giant, MTN to cut down the N1.04 trillion fine slammed on the company for infraction, the Chief Executive Officer of MTN, Ferdi Moolman, announced on Friday that the telecommunications giant did not give bribe for the reduction of the N1.04 trillion fine, NAN says

Mr. Moolman said in a statement in Lagos that MTN’s attention had been drawn to an online report, alleging that a top official in the Presidency took bribe from the company to get the Federal Government to reduce the fine.

”MTN Nigeria has no knowledge of this and the allegation is therefore denied.

“The MTN Nigeria fine was ultimately settled with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC),” he added.

Media reports have alleged that a top presidency official collected N500 million as bribe from MTN to help the company to mitigate the fine imposed on it by the Federal Government.

The NCC had last year reduced the fine to N330 billion.

MTN was allowed to pay the fine in a staggered payment plan that would last till May 31, 2019.

The fine was imposed in October 2015, over the inability of the operator to disconnect about 5.1 million subscribers it registered improperly on its network.

By the terms of the agreement, MTN is expected to pay N30 billion to the NCC, 30 days from the date the agreement was entered into on June 10, 2016.

MTN is also expected to pay N30 billion to NCC on March 31, 2017 and another N30 billion on March 31, 2018.

It is also to pay additional N55 billion on December 31, 2018 and a balance of N55 billion is expected to be paid on March 31, 2019.

How Buhari Shielding Chief of Staff, Kyari Despite Concrete Evidence Of N500m Bribe From MTN

How Buhari Shielding Chief of Staff, Kyari Despite Concrete Evidence Of N500m Bribe From MTN

How Buhari Shielding Chief of Staff, Kyari Despite Concrete Evidence Of N500m Bribe From MTN
President Muhammad Buhari has received concrete evidence that his Chief of Staff (CoS), Abba Kyari, took N500m from operators of MTN to help the telecommunications giant mitigate the fine imposed on it by the federal government, SaharaReporters has learned.

Sources say the evidence was presented to President Buhari several times including during the Sallah holiday.

The mind-boggling revelation is the latest in the mounting allegations of corruption involving members of the top echelon of President Buhari’s administration.

Confronted with the evidence, the CoS reportedly claimed he was helping the All Progressives Congress party raise funds for the gubernatorial election in Bayelsa State, to which the president is said to have asked him if he was the party chairman, but did not relieve him of his post.

SaharaReporters has previously revealed several corrupt actions of the Chief of Staff.  They include taking money from Jide Omokore, a shady businessman who was massively involved in corruption in the oil sector in the preceding administration.

Following acceptance of the money, Mr. Kyari reportedly took Mr. Omokore twice to meet President Buhari to enable the businessman to make a promise to refund some of the funds.  A source told Saharareporters Omokore promised to refund N500 million

When Omokore was eventually arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the CoS reportedly told President Buhari that it was the EFCC chair, Ibrahim Magu, who had bungled progress concerning Omokore.  SaharaReporters has also previously reported that Mr. Kyari wants to remove Magu from the anti-graft body in favor of a candidate who is more amenable to his wishes.

On his part, Omokore is also known to have bribed the judge handling the case with $2million.  He was released on bail without leaving the court premises.

Other members of President Buhari’s inner circle have been exposed as engaging in serious cases of corruption but the President has not acted on their cases, either.  In some instances, they reportedly got members of President Buhari’s office to absolve them of any “wrongdoing”.

Among others:

The Chief of Army Staff, Yusuf Buratai, was found to have used Nigerian Army funds to purchase homes in Dubai;

The Minister of Internal Affairs, Abdulrahman Dambazau, bought homes for millions of dollars in Boston in the United States;

Several other aides and officials within the government have been exposed for involvement in illegal employments and forgery of age and certificates.

As in the case of Mr. Kyari, they have so far all been shielded by President Buhari.  Speaking earlier this to journalists in Daura, his hometown, the president said his “anti-corruption war” was being implemented on the basis of justice and fairness.

N780bn FG Fine Not Intended To Destabilize MTN - AGF

N780bn FG Fine Not Intended To Destabilize MTN - AGF

  • …Insists on strict compliance with laws and regulations

The Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN has revealed that it is not the intention of the Federal Government to destabilize MTN as a result of the fine imposed on it by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) due to its contributions to the growth of the nation’s economy, especially through employments.

He however insists that what is imperative is to ensure that corporate bodies operate within the scope of the prevailing regulations and respect the laws of the land within which they operate.

In a statement made available to the media, Special Adviser to the HAGF/MOJ on Media and Publicity, Comrade Salihu Othman Isah revealed that the Minister informed the House Committee on Communications and Information Technology at the National Assembly on Thursday 14th April, 2016 during a public hearing on the MTN fine.

Malami in his response to questions from members of the Committee explained that the case of MTN does not bother on criminality but non-compliance to laws and regulations.

“It is my constitutional responsibility to ensure that laws of the federation are respected and the interest of the business communities protected”, he further hinted, stressing that penalties are negotiable in accordance with the law and public interest.

According to him, “I’m not unmindful that Nigeria is looking for foreign investors, neither unmindful of the fact that many Nigerians are on the employment of MTN. But my major concern is to ensure that the laws of the land are respected”.

Also responding to questions from members of the Committee, the Accountant General of the Federation, Alhaji Idris Ahmed said he opened the FG Asset Recovery Account based on the instructions.

He explained that MTN deposited the N50bn penalty into the said account while assuring that the statement and figure had remained the same and intact.

The Accountant General of the Federation further affirmed that all recovered looted funds and the MTN fine are domiciled in the FG Asset Recovery Account pending conclusions which would eventually be moved into consolidated accounts.

In his closing remarks, the Chairman, House of Representative Committee on Communications, Honourable Saheed Fijabi said the public hearing was reconvened as a follow up to the meeting held on Tuesday to shed more light on grey areas.

According to him, “We are in the change era and that business is not as usual. That’s why we are here to throw more light into this case.”
