Presidency Issues New Date For Buhari's Arrival From UK Vacation

Presidency Issues New Date For Buhari's Arrival From UK Vacation

Buhari and Aisha
The Presidency has alerted Nigerians on the possible return of President Muhammadu Buhari from London any moment from today as he is no longer “enjoying his stay’’ outside the country.

President Buhari, who proceeded on vacation to UK on Jan. 19 for a routine medical check had indicated in a letter to the Senate, transmitted another letter to the Senate, on Feb. 5, requesting extension of time to complete the medical check-up.

The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, Malam Garba Shehu, in an interview with the Channels Television in Abuja on Tuesday, said that the president would be returning to Nigeria soonest as he was no longer `comfortable’ with the extended vacation in London.

He said,  “As a matter of fact, we should be getting ready to see the president in fresh and that will be soon as possible.

“The President (himself) is looking to being home to be with his people.

“I don’t think he is enjoying any longer with an extended vacation outside the country.’’

On the president’s telephone conversation with President Trump, Shehu described as “undiplomatic’’ the request being made in some quarters for the release of the audio containing the conversation.

According to him, releasing an audio containing telephone conversation between two presidents is highly unethical and against modern day civilization.

He said, “No, I don’t think so; I don’t think it is permitted in international diplomacy. I think if we had recorded Mr Trump in this conversation it would have offended our diplomatic relations.

“I think the Americans themselves would not have recorded this conversation of president to president.”

On the president’s test results being expected from his doctors, the presidential aide said he had no information on whether the president had collected the results or not.

He said, “No, we have no information on that (test results). If he had received them, he would have been on the plane back home.’’

Shehu, who noted that there was no enough time for the two presidents to discuss other continental and international, however, expressed optimism that the conversation would boost the bilateral relations between Nigeria and the U.S.

He said, “Well, there wasn’t enough time to talk about everything. I think the point at what will follow is in the invitation that President Trump has extended to our president (Buhari) to come over.

“That is the kind of opportunity that was presented to Nigeria put all the issues on the desk.

“As for their immigration policy, I think our president has been clear about one thing- the choices made by the Americans as to who to lead them in this case, Mr Trump, is entirely their own choice.

“We have no business interfering with their domestic affairs.

“As to the countries that have barred, it has been clearly specified and Nigeria did not feature in the list.”

Buhari had on Monday in London spoke with Trump by telephone at the request of the American President.

According to the president’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the conversation was cordial and Buhari congratulated Trump on his election as President of the United States and on his cabinet.

Adesina said the two leaders discussed ways to improve cooperation in the fight against terrorism through provision of necessary equipment.

According to him, Trump encourages Buhari to keep up the good work he is doing, and also commends him for the efforts he has made in rescuing 24 of the Chibok Girls and the strides being taken by the Nigerian military.

“Trump assured the Nigerian president of the U.S readiness to cut a new deal in helping Nigeria in terms of military weapons to combat terrorism.

“Trump also invited Buhari to Washington at a mutually convenient date,’’ the statement concluded.

The American President has since been putting calls to other world leaders to inform them of his action plans towards the eradication of terrorism in America.

Nigerians have, however, been reacting to the statement with diverse views.

EXPOSED: How Jonathan Awarded Ghost Projects - Presidency
The administration of Former President Goodluck Jonathan awarded many projects on paper without allocating a single kobo for its take off, the President has claimed

The senior special assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, who stated this in an interview program on Express Radio in Kano on Tuesday, said a number of projects existing on paper are now being activated, citing the Kano-Katsina dual road project as an example of what he called “deceitful and ghost projects now being given life.”

In his words, “Kano-Katsina dual highway was awarded three years ago by the last administration. They didn’t pay a kobo for its start-up. President Buhari just paid money for the first tranche of 75 kilometers and work has begun apace.”

According to him, Nigeria is taking a giant leap in infrastructure development by speeding up ongoing projects and investing heavily in the construction and repair of highways, railways and power generating plants across the country.

He said that the Buhari administration had chosen to fast track projects related to infrastructure in order to pump money into the economy as a way of pulling the economy out of recession.

To this end, he said that an unprecedented amount of N750 Billion Naira has been released for capital projects in the last five months and that counterpart funds for the take-off of the USD 11 billion Kano-Lagos rail project had been paid.

Malam Garba explained the essence of infrastructure in the country’s economic and industrial take-off, describing it as the equivalent of the arteries forming the bloodstream in the body. “Without infrastructure, the country will not witness growth,” he noted.

On the resurgence of militancy and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta region, Malam Garba appealed to militants to maintain peace in the region as the President seeks a permanent solution to the problems that are worrisome to every citizen.

“We must keep national interest above all else and give priority to eschewing violence and destruction,” he urged.

The Presidential spokesman expressed regrets that despite its good faith in pursuing dialogue with the Niger Delta stakeholders, the militant groups have not reciprocated the government’s good gesture in finding peaceful and lasting solution to the crisis in the oil producing areas of Nigeria.

In his words, “Despite the government’s practical demonstration of goodwill by bringing the parties or stakeholders to the round table, the militant groups have continued to blow up national economic assets.”

According to Malam Garba, the continued destruction of oil installations, including those repaired, has thrown a spanner in the works, causing enormous hardships on innocent Nigerians on account of declining oil production output and massive losses of revenues, which in turn, badly affect the ability of governments at all levels to meet their basic obligations, including payment of salaries.

The Presidential Spokesman, while cautioning that violence brings no benefits to anybody, appealed to Niger Delta leaders at all levels to exert every influence they have to stop the violence and economic sabotage “so that normalcy returns to the region.”

Buhari DISOWNS Media Aide Over Aisha Kitchen Comment Rebuttal
President Muhammadu Buhari has disowned a rebuttal comment made by his  Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mallam Shehu Garba over the President's Wife, Aisha belongs to his kitchen comment.

President Buhari has reiterated that his wife, Aisha, actually belongs in the kitchen, saying she should stay out of politics.

The president held his ground when he was asked to clarify his earlier comments by German broadcaster, Deutsche Welle.

“I am sure you have a house. You know where your kitchen is. You know where your living room is. And I believe your wife looks after all that even if she’s working,” Mr. Buhari said when the interviewer, Phil Gayle, asked him to clarify his controversial comments.

The president’s comment counters the previous explanation by his media aide, Garba Shehu, who tried to play down the remarks.

Mr. Shehu had, hours after Mr. Buhari made the statement at a press briefing in Berlin, said the president was only joking.

“My friends, can’t a leader get a sense (of) humour anymore? Mr. President laughed before that statement was made,” Mr. Shehu said as the comments drew worldwide condemnation. “He was obviously throwing a banter.”

But when Mr. Gayle asked Mr. Buhari if “that is your wife’s function?”

The president answered: “Yes, to look after me”.

Mr. Buhari said “I think so” when asked if his wife should desist from talking about politics.

Mr. Buhari has been roundly criticised for his comments, which he made in response to his wife’s criticism of his cabinet composition.

Mrs.  Buhari threatened to withdraw her support for the president should he decide to run for reelection.

This is the second time Mr. Buhari will contradict his media assistants in recent months.

In April, when former British Prime Minister David Cameron said Nigeria was fantastically corrupt , Mr. Shehu pushed back against the comments on behalf of his principal, saying Mr. Buhari was embarrassed by it.

The next day, Mr. Buhari said in at least two different occasions that he agreed with Mr. Cameron that Nigeria was indeed a fantastically corrupt country.
