56th Independent: Buhari List 3 Main Problems Of Nigeria's RECESSION, States Steps Taken To Ease Out Quickly

56th Independent: Buhari List 3 Main Problems Of Nigeria's RECESSION, States Steps Taken To Ease Out Quickly

Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari has listed three major problems why Nigeria is currently plagued with recession.

The President in his 56th years independent anniversary broadcast message to Nigerians said Nigeria is in recession due to;
  1. Critical shortage of foreign exchange
  2. Oil price dropped from an average of hundred USD per barrel over the last decade to an average of forty USD per barrel this year and last.
  3. the damage perpetrated by Niger Delta thugs on pipelines
Buhari in his broadcast this morning said;

"All countries face ups and downs. Our own recession has been brought about by a critical shortage of foreign exchange. Oil price dropped from an average of hundred USD per barrel over the last decade to an average of forty USD per barrel this year and last.
Worse still, the damage perpetrated by Niger Delta thugs on pipelines sometimes reduced Nigeria’s production to below One million barrels per day against the normal two point two million barrels per day. Consequently, the naira is at its weakest, but the situation will stabilize."
In stating what the government is doing to ameliorate the suffering of Nigerians and ease out of the recession, President Buhari said;
"But this is only temporary. Historically about half our dollar export earnings go to importation of petroleum and food products! Nothing was saved for the rainy days during the periods of prosperity. We are now reaping the whirlwinds of corruption, recklessness and impunity.
There are no easy solutions, but there are solutions nonetheless and Government is pursuing them in earnest. We are to repair our four refineries so that Nigeria can produce most of our petrol requirements locally, pending the coming on stream of new refineries. That way we will save ten billion USD yearly in importing fuel.
At the same time, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and the Central Bank have been mobilized to encourage local production of rice, maize, sorghum, millet and soya beans. Our target is to achieve domestic self-sufficiency in these staples by 2018.
Already farmers in thirteen out of thirty six states are receiving credit support through the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Anchor Borrowers Programme. Kebbi state alone this year is expected to produce one million tonnes of locally grown rice, thanks to a favourable harvest this year. As part of the 13 states, Lagos and Ogun are also starting this programme. Rice alone for example costs Nigeria two billion USD to import.
The country should be self-sufficient in basic staples by 2019. Foreign exchange thus saved can go to industrial revival requirements for retooling, essential raw materials and spare parts. It is in recognition of the need to re-invigorate agriculture in our rural communities that we are introducing the LIFE programme.
Government recognises that irrigation is key to modern agriculture: that is why the Ministries of Agriculture and Water Resources are embarking on a huge programme of development of lakes, earth dams and water harvesting schemes throughout the country to ensure that we are no longer dependent on rain-fed agriculture for our food requirements.
In addition, government is introducing Water Resources Bill encompassing the National Water Resources Policy and National Irrigation and Drainage Policy to improve management of water and irrigation development in the country. We are reviving all the twelve River Basin Authorities, namely;
Anambra - Imo
Benin - Owena
Chad Basin
Cross River
Hadejia - Jama'are
Lower Benue
Lower Niger
Niger Delta
Ogun - Osun
Sokoto - Rima
Upper Benue
Upper Niger
The intention is eventually to fully commercialise them to better support crop production, aqua –culture and accelerated rural development.
29. This Administration is committed to the revival of Lake Chad and improvement of the hydrology and ecology of the basin. This will tune in with efforts to rehabilitate the thirty million people affected by the Boko Haram insurgency in the Lake Chad basin countries.
The second plank in our economic revival strategy is centred on the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing. The Ministry will lead and oversee the provision of critical infrastructure of power, road transport network and housing development.
Power generation has steadily risen since our Administration came on board from three thousand three hundred and twenty four megawatts in June 2015, rising to a peak of five thousand and seventy four megawatts in February 2016.
For the first time in our history the country was producing five thousand megawatts. However, renewed militancy and destruction of gas pipelines caused acute shortage of gas and constant drop in electricity output available on the grid.
There has been during the period June 2015 to September 2016 big improvement in transmission capacity from five thousand five hundred megawatts to the present seven thousand three hundred megawatts.
There were only two system collapses between June and December 2015, but due to vandalism by Niger Delta militants the over-all system suffered 16 system collapses between March and July 2016 alone. As I have said earlier, we are engaging with responsible leadership in the region to find lasting solutions to genuine grievances of the area but we will not allow a tiny minority of thugs to cripple the country's economy.
In the meantime, government is going ahead with projects utilizing alternate technologies such as hydro, wind, and solar to contribute to our energy mix. In this respect, the Mambilla Hydro project, after many years of delay is taking off this year. Contract negotiations are nearing completion with Chinese firms for technical and financial commitments.
The project is to be jointly financed by Nigeria and the Chinese-Export-Import Bank. In addition, fourteen Solar Power Projects have had their power purchase agreements concluded. Hence the plan to produce one thousand two hundred megawatts of solar electricity for the country would be realized on schedule.
And in line with the objective of government to complete all abandoned projects across the country, the Rural Electrification Agency's projects needing completion are provided for in the 2016 Budget. Bringing electricity to rural areas will help farmers, small scale and cottage industries to integrate with the national economy.
Roads Construction and Rehabilitation has taken off. The sum of twelve billion naira was allocated to this sector in the 2015 Budget, not enough even to pay interest on outstanding unpaid claims.
39. Notwithstanding the budgetary constraints, the current budget allocated two hundred and forty billion naira for highway projects against twelve billion naira in 2015. Many contractors who have not been paid for three years have now remobilized to sites. Seven hundred and twenty point five billion naira has so far been released this budget year to capital projects.
The Ministry of Power, Works and Housing has received one hundred and ninety seven point five billion naira. Work on the following highways has now resumed.
Dualization of Calabar – Itu Road in Cross River/Akwa Ibom States.
Dualization of Lokoja – Benin Road, Ehor - Benin city, Edo State.
Re-construction of outstanding sections of Benin – Shagamu Express way, Edo/Ogun States.
Expansion works on Lagos – Ibadan Dual carriageway, Ogun/Oyo States
Rehabilitation of Onitsha – Enugu Expressway, Anambra/Enugu States.
Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of Enugu – Port Harcourt Dual carriageway, Abia/Rivers States.
Rehabilitation of Hadejia – Nguru Road, Jigawa State.
Dualization of Kano – Katsina Road, Kano State.
Dualization of Kano – Maiduguri Road, Borno State.
Dualization of Azare – Potiskum Road, Azare – Sharuri Road, Bauchi State.
Rehabilitation of Ilorin – Jebba – Mokwa – Birnin Gwari Road, Kwara State.
Construction of Oju/Lokoja – Oweto Bridge over River Benue, Benue State.
Other major highways are in the queue for rehabilitation or new construction.
Already contractors have recalled about nine thousand workers laid off and Government expects that several hundreds of thousands of workers will be reengaged in the next few months as our public works programme gains momentum.
On railways, we have provided our counterpart funding to China for the building of our standard gauge Lagos -Kano railway. Meanwhile, General Electric is investing two point two billion USD in a concession to revamp, provide rolling stock, and manage the existing lines, including the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri Line. The Lagos-Calabar railway will also be on stream soon.
We have initiated the National Housing Programme. In 2014 four hundred million naira was voted for Housing. In 2015 nothing. Our first budget this year is devoting thirty five point six billion naira. Much of the house building will be private – sector led but Government is initiating a pilot housing scheme of two thousand eight hundred and thirty eight units uniformly spread across the 36 states and FCT.
We expect these units to be completed within 4 – 6 months. These experimental Nigeria House model Units will be constructed using only made in Nigeria building materials and components. This initiative is expected to reactivate the building materials manufacturing sector, generate massive employment opportunities and develop sector capacity and expertise.
The programmes I have outlined will revive the economy, restore the value of the naira and drive hunger from our land.
Abroad, Nigeria’s standing has changed beyond belief in the last 18 months. We are no longer a pariah state. Wherever I go, I have been received with un-accustomed hospitality. Investors from all over the world are falling over themselves to come and do business in Nigeria. This government intends to make business environment more friendly because we can not develop ourselves alone.
All countries, no matter how advanced, welcome foreign investments to their economy. This is the essence of globalization and no country in the 21st century can be an island. Our reforms are therefore designed to prepare Nigeria for the 21st century."

Indicted Buhari's Minister Name Missing As FG Orders Probe of Ihejirika, Minimah, 52 Others Over Arms Scandal

dambazau and buhari
A serving Minister of Interior, Abdurrahman Bello Dambazau is missing as President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the recommendation of the Committee charged with investigating the Defence Equipment Procurement from 2007 to 2015, for further investigation of those involved, after the committee found a number of irregularities in the contract awards.

Dambazau was reportedly indicted in the report submitted by the committee to the President, an earlier report according to Premium Times and culled by News Punch had published.

Mr. Dambazau was particularly mentioned as trying to suppress the content of the report. He was appointed the chief of army staff by late President Umaru Yar’Adua, and served between 2008 and 2010.

The approval followed the Third Interim Report of the Presidential Committee on the Audit of Defence Equipment, which was released on Thursday.

Among those to be investigated are 18 serving and retired military personnel, 12 serving and retired public officials and 24 Chief Executive Officers of Companies involved in the procurement.

All were either accounting officers or played key roles in the Nigerian Army procurement activities during the period under review.

Those listed for further investigation include two former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. O.A. Ihejirika (Rtd) and Lt.-Gen. K.T.J. Minimah (Rtd); former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs II, Dr Nurudeen Mohammed and three former Permanent Secretaries in the Ministry of Defence – Mr. Bukar Goni Aji, Mr. Haruna Sanusi and Me. E.O, Oyemomi.

Also, the CEOs to be investigated include Col. Olu Bamgbose (Rtd) of Bamverde Ltd; Mr. Amity Sade of Dolyatec Comms Ltd and DYI Global Services and Mr. Edward Churchill of Westgate Global Trust Ltd.

According to the Committee, the total amount spent for procurement and operations within the period were N185,843,052,564.30 and $685,349,692.49.

It found that the Nigerian Army Contracts awarded by the Ministry of Defence for the period under review were often awarded without ”significant input from end-user (Nigerian Army) and to vendors who lacked the necessary technical competence”.

”As an example, 3 contracts with a total value of N5,940,000,000.00 were awarded to DYI Global Services Ltd and Doiyatec Comms Nig. Ltd (owned by the same individuals) for the procurement of military hardware including 20 units of KM-38 Twin Hull Boats and 6 Units of 4X4 Ambulances fitted with radios. The committee found that the 2 companies collected N5,103,500,000.00, representing 86% of the total value of the 3 contracts worth N5,940,000,000.00, but only performed to the tune of N2,992,183,705.31,” the report said.

The committee also found that a contract worth N169,916,849.77 for the procurement of 53 Armoured Vehicles Spare Parts, with 90 days completion time, is yet to be completed 5 years after.

With respect to contracts awarded directly by the Nigerian Army, the Committee found that many of the contracts were characterized by ”lack of due process, in breach of extant procurement regulations and tainted by corrupt practices.

”In this regard, a review of the procurement carried out by Chok Ventures Ltd and Integrated Equipment Services Ltd established that between March 2011 and December 2013, the 2 companies exclusively procured various types of Toyota and Mitsubishi vehicles worth over N3,000,000,000.0 for the Nigerian Army without any competitive bidding.

”Though the committee found no credible evidence of delivery of the vehicles, the vendors were fully paid based on job completion certificate authenticated by the then Chief of Logistics. Also, analysis of the various bank accounts of the 2 companies showed transfers to individuals related to then Chief of Army Staff,” the report said

“About two – three times I called the villa they would divert my call to the CSO, saying I cannot talk to the president. I should say whatever I want to say to him; a sitting governor? That is not Nigeria. So, at that point, I had to stay clear because they were on a vendetta mission”, Fayose said in a private interview with select journalists. “I wrote three letters to the president, none of them was replied. Initially, when he became president, I didn’t start like this”, Fayose added.

Asked why, as sitting governor, he shuns state executive council meetings with the president, Fayose said: “Each time they call meeting, my deputy goes there”.

Fayose added that he has did not harrass anyone despite provocation.

“The fact that I criticise you; I don’t have to be in your party! The APC, every day they come here to do rallies, they say that Fayose should resign, they say Fayose is fraudulent, did you see me slapping anybody? I will just look at you. There is freedom of expression.

“Even in the face of intimidation and even in the face of misbehaving, as a leader, you should accommodate all. Let me give you one instance, which the APC can never do to anybody. Throughout the tenure Fayemi was here, I never used a word that is unclean on him. I tell him he is our leader because anybody God has put there is our leader truly.”

Fayose's Revelation On Buhari's Wife Halliburton Bribery Scandal: US Govt. Opens Up
Apparently in response to the outburst of lousy Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose stating that President Muhammadu Buhari's wife, Aisha Buhari was wanted in the US and was avoiding travelling to the country Over link to the scandalous Halliburton bribe, the United States government says it has no information on the alleged crimes committed by President Muhammadu Buhari’s wife.

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, had, last month, alleged that Mrs. Buhari was involved in the $185m Halliburton scandal.

While reacting to the freezing of his Zenith Bank accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Fayose claimed that the wife of the President was a wanted person in the US.

He had said, “Even the President cannot claim to be an angel. The estate he built in Abuja is known to us. His wife was indicted in the Halliburton scandal. When that American, Jefferson, was being sentenced, the President’s wife was mentioned as having wired $170,000 to Jefferson. Her name was on page 25 of the sentencing of Jefferson. We can serialise the judgment for people to see and read.”

Fayose repeated the claim in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi. He said Aisha refused to travel with the President to the US because of her involvement in the scandal
The acting Public Affairs Officer, US Consulate General, Lagos, Frank Sellin, said this in an email sent to our correspondent on Tuesday.

But the acting Public Affairs Officer, US Consulate General, Lagos, Frank Sellin, in an email sent to Punch Newspaper on Tuesday, exonerated Aisha Buhari in the bribery saga.

Sellin According to Punch Newspaper, Sellin said in the e-mail that  “Thank you for the inquiry.  We have no information to provide on this matter.”

Before now, a former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, Nuhu Ribadu had also exonerated the President's wife of any complexity in the Halliburton bribe saga.

Ribadu said; the Aisha Buhari mentioned in the bribery scandal of a former United States congressman, William Jefferson, was an impostor who was peddling influence with the name of President Muhammadu Buhari, a former chairman of the EFCC, Nuhu Ribadu, has told PREMIUM TIMES.

Mr. Ribadu narrated how the EFCC during his tenure, in conjunction with U.S. authorities, almost arrested the impostor.

“She is a different person and has lived in the U.S. for years. She is hardly in Nigeria. The EFCC was working with U.S. authorities on the investigations. One of my plans was to arrest her before I left the commission. Our suspicion then was that she was using the Buhari name for influence.

“The EFCC laid ambush to see if she would come into the country so she could be arrested. I didn’t know what happened to the plan to arrest her after I left,” he said.

Fuel Subsidy: National Youth Council Of Nigeria REJECTS N145 New Fuel Price - Press Statement

PRESS RELEASE:
CLARION CALL ON FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FOR A REVIEW OF NEW PMS 145 NAIRA PUMP PRICE

Governance is ultimately about the interest of the entire populace, democracy as a form of government compels government to ensure policies are formulated not only to strengthen the authorities or protect the incapacitations of people in power but to ensure the masses are not thrown into servitude and penury as a result of government policies.

As the umbrella body of the entire Youths of Nigeria and the mouthpiece of the most vulnerable to the hardship to trail the new policy on the pump price of petrol designed to ensure the complete deregulation of the downstream sector, we view the policy as antithetical to the real purpose of deregulation. Deregulation is a process of removing constraints, in real sense, it is defined as government-imposed economic regulation aimed at protecting the interest of the governed against exploitations and threats.

Every successive government since 1976 have mismanaged the Petroleum Industry, our government has failed to maximize the opportunities offered to this Country as a large Oil Producing Country where the Pump Prices of Petrol Products ought to be available for domestic consumption at lowest rate which will facilitate ease of commodities, trades cum purchase and supply.

Instead of government to ensure the availability of our abundant natural resources to create comfort for the masses, a high level of retardation has traded the handling of petroleum products by allowing some oil cabals to determine the fates of the masses with the malfunctioning of local refineries. Oil subsidy payment to oil marketers have been a subject of review over the years, previous attempt to remove the subsidy failed as it translated to higher cost of purchase at pump price which informs our extensive study of the intricacies surrounding the oil subsidy and deregulation of the oil sector.

It is the responsibility of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation to efficiently manage our oil sector and ensure the oil products are available at an affordable cost for domestic and industrial usage. The low functionalities of our refineries have doomed the Country for Crude Exportation to foreign refineries through a process often shrouded in secrecy to dupe Nigerians in spite of common knowledge of price of crude per barrel time to time.

The beneficiaries of oil subsidy payments and the NNPC have always subjected the masses to exploitations by fixing Pump Prices often static for a long period against fluctuations of price of crude which amount to rape on the purse of commoners. A Government of the People has once again acted against the norms of democracy that commandeer proper consultations and explanations of policy for peoples understanding and trust before pronouncement of such sensitive policy at a period when the masses are enduring economic hardship.

The government has failed to announce the indices and parameters engaged in arriving at such an alarming pump price of 145 Naira. Considering expertise and common sense, if Crude currently sells at 46.23 Dollar per barrel, Nigerians deserve to know the cost of refining per barrel, transportation expenses, products availability, volumes distributed and consumptions.

We are not convinced that the removal of oil subsidy translates to an increase in pump price as usually claimed by government. The issue at stake is domestic usage and not foreign exchange or oil trade, payment for our crude to be refined and transported back to the Country for proper distributions and efficient usage shouldn’t be shrouded in secrecy, the whole details should be available to the people without element of deceit to justify proper pump price regulations.

In a Country of few people of good conscience, the Federal Government got it extremely wrong to regulate the pump price at 145 Naira considering the absence of means of ensuring the masses are not subjected to exploitations by oil marketers and filling stations owners that will buy lesser than imagined and sell at outrageous rates under the regulation. We do not consider the removal of oil subsidy as translating to increase in pump price and as such, there is no justification for the 145 Naira Pump Price Regulations.

We understand the good intention of government to deregulate the oil industry, create competition and block leakages in the interest of the masses but the government has not acted rightly by not informing appropriately on the indices used to arrive at that alarming pump price which inform our opposition to the new pump price announced by government. Putting all factors into proper considerations, we are strongly convinced that the intention of government is still attainable within a regulate pump price below 95 Naira even with the removal of subsidy and before we can hold a different view, government must come forward to give details to justify their claim in an engaging forum with experts from Civil Societies, Labour and Youth Movements.

We demand an immediate downward review of the pump price and call on government that necessary machineries be conveyed to guide against exploitations of the masses by the oil dealers and guard against deprivations of the masses of the gains of the full deregulation of the downstream sector. This is the time for Mr President to prove his sensitivities to the plight of Nigerians and not be glued to uniformed decisions of the handlers of petroleum industry under his watch and supervision.

A Peoples’ Oriented Government will ensure that the people are not subjected to economic servitude under any guise; we demand serious explanations from our government. In the past, we witnessed situations where oil dealers were gaining more than 40percent or more profit on a litre at pump price and the government has just opened another window for the oil dealers to even make 60percent profit in this new order of 145 Naira at Pump Price which is not only an aberration but grievous exploitation of the downtrodden.

Buhari Brings Back WAI, 32yrs After

Buhari Brings Back WAI, 32yrs After

The Authority - The Minister of Information Culture and Tourism, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, as hinted that the National campaign tagged: ‘War against Indiscipline’ will be re-launched soon after the proposed National Summit on Rebirth, Ethics and Values have been concluded in July, 2016.

It will be recalled that as a military Head of State, President Buhari alongside late Tunde Idiagbon launched a nationwide campaign called ‘War Against Indiscipline’ (WAI). The campaign was aimed at tackling the most anti-social Nigerian characteristics such as indiscipline, corruption, and lack of environmental sanitation.

The minister disclosed this at a press briefing yesterday in Abuja which was intended to inform Nigerians on the successful take-off of the pilot scheme of the Digital Switch Over in Jos Plateau State.

Fielding questions from journalists on why government was yet to start the campaign one year after it assumed office, Alhaji Mohammed explained that government had already started the ground work for the campaign to be launched.

“You cannot do everything on day one in office. You choose your priority. The truth about it is that we have started actually working one time on our ‘War Against Indiscipline’ and we have received presentations from both public and the private sector. The ministry has reviewed the proposals.
“But we do not want to launch our campaign until after our Summit on National rebirth, Ethics and Values have been concluded and this summit will come up in July. So, we are actually just at the tip of launching this national campaign”, he said.

Speaking further, the Minister while highlighting the benefits that would be accrued to the nation’s economy with the migration from analogue transmission to the Digital Terrestrial Transmission said the ministry was focused on meeting the June, 2017 deadline.

“The digitisation project must go on irrespective of what irregularities are taking place. But we know that we do not have a choice than to meet the deadline of 2017. Apart from the huge economic benefits that will be reaped from this process, Nigeria will be left behind if it does not meet the deadline. It will mean in effect that all our television broadcasting will no longer be protected by interference from other parts of the world.

Angry Buhari Walks Out On 'Stranded' Ministers Over Frivolous Demand

Angry Buhari Walks Out On 'Stranded' Ministers Over Frivolous Demand

The ministers received a shock of their lives as President Muhammadu Buhari reportedly walked out on them over what could be termed as frivolous demand for accommodation allowances at a time the economy is biting harder even on the common citizens

Most of the Minister, which report says are still stranded 6 months after President Muhammadu Buhari swore them in, have still not settled down in Abuja and are groaning because the N4 million approved by the president as their yearly accommodation allowance have not been able to rent any meaningful house in Abuja, ThisDay says.

The scene, according to SignalNG, reportedly took place at last Wednesday saw President Buhari walked out on a meeting with a team of ministers who scheduled a meeting with the President last Wednesday on behalf of their colleagues to make a case for decent accommodation. The ministers, led by Youth and Sports Minister Solomon Dalung had sought the audience of President Buhari to acquaint him with what ministers in his cabinet were suffering when all of a sudden the President stood up and ‘excused himself’ leaving the ministers dejected and hopeless.

“The ministers have been facing serious challenges with accommodation and they put their heads together to go and see the President hoping that they could persuade him to do something. Dalung was the spokesperson of the ministers, Communication Minister Adebayo Shittu was also at the meeting. Where the problem started was when Dalung started making reference to how ministers got a nice accommodation package under previous governments. He actually said that under Jonathan, ministers were given N20 million each for accommodation. When he said that, Buhari asked if he meant N20 million for all the ministers and Dalung replied that it was N20 million per person. It was at this point that Buhari stood up and said he was taking his leave and leaving Osinbajo to “sort it out” with them”, the source disclosed.

Buhari’s ministers have been complaining about the meager N4 million approved by Buhari for their accommodation. The Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu was only recently able to get an accommodation in Abuja after his state governor, Abiola Ajimobi graciously helped him with an extra N2 million, a source who did not want to be named told this newspaper.

On his part, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung recently secured a low-key accommodation at Gwarinpa district of Abuja where he now resides.

However, not all ministers are groaning under the accommodation challenge, as a few of them are believed to be wealthy enough to afford any type of accommodation anywhere in the world. Conspicuously absent at the meeting with Buhari were the Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola and Minister of Solid Minerals, Kayode Fayemi. The ministers are ex-governors and super ministers in Buhari’s cabinet.

Quoting a presidency source on Monday, Thisday reports that Buhari rejected the request by the ministers “because his hands are tied by the Remuneration Act, even though he empathises with their situation. They were asking for N20 million per annum for their accommodation. But prior to last week’s meeting, several other options had been proposed, including buying an estate or the FCDA (Federal Capital Development Authority) building one, but these were considered expensive and dropped. The final option was the request for N20 million per annum, because some ministers are squatting in Abuja and the situation is impacting on their jobs.”

A four to five-bedroom detached house in Wuse 2 district of Abuja, goes for anywhere between N8 million to N10 million per annum. The rate is almost the same in Gwarinpa Phase 1 and Jabi parts of Abuja, while a four-bedroom detached house in Maitama or Asokoro goes for between N10 million and N15 million per annum.

Buhari, Tinubu Can Never AGREE, We'll Shock Them In 2019 - Sule Lamido
Sule Lamido, the immediate past Governor of Jigawa State, has expressed confidence that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will bounce back.

Lamido, who spoke in his country home, Bamaina, said he was hopeful that efforts to rebuild the party at the local and national level will be productive.

“Modu Sheriff (current PDP acting national chairman), has a long-standing political history. All those making noise are products of political invention,” he told Daily Trust.

“Sheriff has been in politics and defeating PDP at the poll since 1999. He was in the ANPP and worked for the alliance that brought together incompatibles. I mean, how do you put (Alhaji Abubakar) Atiku, (President Muhammadu) Buhari and (Chief Ahmed Bola Tinubu) in one political pot? How do you cook them?

“No, tell me. You can’t cook Buhari and this two in one political pot. When they were forging alliance with ANPP, Sheriff was the arrowhead. They were celebrating him when he was in APC, working for APC. He was a very wonderful person. But, when he joined the PDP, he became a Boko Haram member.

“He knows them damn too well. In the build-up to the last general elections, PDP was vilified, intimidated with religion, falsehoods and propaganda through Facebook postings. Rwandan genocide pictures were posted as Boko Haram victims.

“Sheriff is the best thing to have happened to PDP. It is a huge good will, he has a huge followership. He will come to Jigawa sometime next week. We will come out en masse to welcome him and assemble the biggest crowd ever in Nigerian politics. We want to force them (APC) out in 2019 because they have no agenda and manifesto to govern”, he stated.

It's Too Early To Condemn Buhari - PDP Chieftain, Bode George

Chief Olabode George, a former southwest Vice-Chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has said it is too early to batch President Muhammadu Buhari-led government of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Chief George in an interview with the Daily Sun opined that the President grapples with the myriads of problems confronting the country urged Nigerians to be patient with Buhari. He said  he has refrained from joining issues with him because, “it is just a year and personally, I don’t believe this is the time to start kicking them”, described Nigerians as “ very impatient.”

He, however, identified the congregation of different groups in the party which has defied proper fusion as the major cause of the many problems afflicting the government which has slowed down progress. Describing the President’s All Progressives Congress (APC) as a “congregation of strange bed fellows”, he averred that the instability in the party has frustrated the expectations and hopes of Nigerians on the government, adding that, “if you don’t have a solid political foundation, forget about any economic growth.”

George further advised the APC not to make the mistake of the PDP by allowing these crises and divisions, which he blamed for the latter’s ouster from government in the 2015 presidential elections.

“For me, it is still too early. Understandably, they came from different groups that make up the party. They are still struggling…politics and political activities are the foundations for economic growth.

“If you don’t have a solid political foundation, forget about any economic growth. It is sine qua non. There is CPC, ACN, APGA, nPDP. It is a congregation of strange bedfellows. It will take time for them to melt together.

“We don’t want to go into that crises and the divisions, because we know what happened to our party that we got a bloody nose. Thank God it was not a technical knockout”

Buhari Signs No LOAN DEAL But Investment With China - Presidency

Buhari Signs No LOAN DEAL But Investment With China - Presidency

Contrary to initial media reports, the Presidency on Saturday said President Muhammadu Buhari did not sign any loan deal with the Peoples Republic of China during his just-concluded one-week working visit to the country.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, gave the clarification in an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH.

Ahead of Buhari’s trip which started last Sunday, there were media reports that he would sign a $2bn loan deal with China during the visit as the Federal Government sought funds to finance the over N2tn budget deficit.

Reuters had reported that Adesina confirmed that loan agreement would be signed but he could not say how much until it was signed.

But the presidential spokesman told our correspondent on Saturday that there was no iota of truth in the report.

“There was no loan deal during the President’s visit to China. All that is coming are investments into Nigeria,” he stated.

At the conclusion of the visit on Friday, the Presidency had said the President’s trip yielded over $6bn additional investments for Nigeria.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists.

Shehu said the President believed that the agreements concluded with the Chinese during the visit would have a huge and positive impact on key sectors of the Nigerian economy, including power, solid minerals, agriculture, housing and rail transportation.

He said, “In the power sector, North South Power Company Limited and Sinohydro Corporation Limited signed an agreement valued at $478,657,941.28 for the construction of 300 Mega Watts solar power in Shiriro, Niger State.

“In the solid minerals sector, Granite and Marble Nigeria Limited and Shanghai Shibang signed an agreement valued at $55m for the construction and equipping of granite mining plant in Nigeria.

“A total of $1bn is to be invested in the development of a greenfield expressway for Abuja-Ibadan-Lagos under an agreement reached by the Infrastructure Bank and Sinohydro Corporation Limited.

“For the housing sector, both companies also sealed a $250m deal to develop an ultra modern 27-storeyed high rise complex and a $2.5bn agreement for the development of the Lagos Metro Rail Transit Red Line project.”

According to the presidential spokesman, other agreements announced and signed during the visit included $1bn for the establishment of a hi-tech industrial park in Ogun-Guangdong Free Trade Zone in Igbesa, Ogun State.

He added that the Ogun-Guangdong Free Trade Zone and CNG (Nigeria) Investment Limited also signed an agreement valued at $200m for the construction of two 500MT/day float gas facilities.

“An agreement valued at $363m for the establishment of a comprehensive farm and downstream industrial park in Kogi State was also announced at the Nigeria-China business forum.

“Other agreements undergoing negotiations include a $500m project for the provision of television broadcast equipment and a $25m facility for production of pre-paid smart meters between Mojec International Limited and Microstar Company Limited.

“About 100 Nigerian businesses and 300 Chinese firms participated in the Nigeria-China business forum, which took place a day after President Buhari began his visit to China,” Shehu added.

Modern day African politicians are special species, plenty of them are funny lot, some are ignoramuses and some are incurable utopians, but one thing that appears to be general phenomenon is self-centredness.

Unlike in the early days of African independence struggle, where African leaders were ideologues, because they were passionate about the the well being of their people, in a situation where people like Sekeou Toure of Guinea would champion socialism for his country with the people at the centre of his manifestoes; Julius Nyerere would seek African socialism as an attitude in Tanzania; Kwame Nkrumah would demand intellectual activism and socialism for Ghana and African, and our own Obafemi Awolowo would canvass for Socialism with parliamentary democracy just to define how and who to govern, the modern day politicians are controlled by their ego centrism of negative value-me, myself and I.

I read in the newspapers an interview granted by one politician from Kwara state, Mr. Kawu Baraje, who happened to be the former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) now a chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) and one of the political boys of the embattled Senate President Bukola Saraki, where he predicted doom for his party, because the interest of his paymaster is being threatened by the anti-corruption drive of President Buhari as touching Saraki's trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal and I laughed out at his fallacies and old logic.

For those who have not read the interview, let me just point out three points out of Baraje gibberish and affirm his claim-that APC is floundering, because the President is being distracted by his aides; that the party and the President stand aloof in the trial of the embattled Senate President for corruption at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, making Saraki to be facing justice without influence; that the trial is designed to remove Saraki from Senate Presidency, because some party chiefs were not happy with the way he emerged as number three citizen cum chairman of the National Assembly. Therefore, APC would break like they did to the decimated PDP and new stronger party would emerge.

Those who are thinking with their anus go along with the possible worlds created by Baraje,  while any level headed person knows that the same tactics cannot be used to win election twice. I would have been convinced by the poor man's argument had it been that he detached emotion from his points, but his desperation is understood, and I would not fall into the error of argumentum ad hominem by attacking his personality.

I chose to write this piece, because I voted for President Buhari, not as an APC member, but because he was the only credible alternative to former President Goodluck Jonathan whose administration was hijacked by the wicked looters and unscrupulous politicians who succeeded in dragging the country backward for 50 years. So, I affirm my locus for speaking on the matter affecting his presidency.

In the first place, Baraje has forgotten that what attracted Nigerians to Buhari in his fourth attempt was his anti-corruption status, and his handlers deployed his sterling anti-graft posture as a campaign tool. More so, the people recognized that corruption was on its four when Jonathan was ruling, and that the nation was becoming pariah. So, for Baraje to think that the neutrality of President Buhari would spell doom for his party in the next election is false, because people are keenly following the trial, and they want to test the will of the President, and if he is seen interfering  with the trial, his anti corruption fight would be deflated and useless. So, Baraje's first and second premises are false.

Furthermore, Baraje failed to understand that Buhari did not win because a new PDP was formed and broke away from the old PDP, the President won, because the "talakawas" of the North and South West identified with the man because of his spartan lifestyle and his unblemished integrity despite the fact that he had served in all strategic positions the nation could offer including being Head of State. And for the fact that Professor Attahiru Jega, the man of history made the votes count(a feat that must be credited to Jonathan). Fact sheet had it that the last election would still have been won by Buhari without the help of any big PDP chief in the North, but the input of the south western elite was obvious anyway. So, for Baraje to claim that another party would emerge from APC like the then new PDP and shoot down Buhari suggests an inductive leap.

Now, what could make Buhari presidency to kiss the dust? It is certain that the President is concerned and is working round the clock to fix the mess this nation was put into, but the struggle of the old order with the new Sheriff has brought untold pain unto the masses. So, people are justifiably shouting under heavy pressure: economic topsy-turvy, epileptic power supply, paralysis of critical sectors, skyrocketing inflation, fuel scarcity, infrastructure decay and terrible hunger. Hence, Baraje thought this crisis brewed because the President chose not to save Saraki. What a fallacy!

If Buhari delivers on his campaign promises by deploying maximum force against the pipeline vandals and the gas flow freely to our turbines, and the power is fixed, jobs at formal and informal sectors would be created in millions, and people would be happy; if Buhari deploys funds to capital projects and turn the entire nation into a construction site, jobs would be created in thousands and there would be development along the affected corridors, and people would be happy.

Besides, if Buhari can fix the naira value just the way he sought out the currency deal with China, and use the yuan to fight dollar dominance in the country, and the commoners regain their purchasing power, and the machinery to develop agriculture is imported, and the new factory from textile to car assemblies spring up, jobs would be created in millions and the people would be happy; if Buhari can chase boko haram out the country and annihilate the terrorists, and make the country safe and secure just the way it is happening now in the North East, then there would be no vacancy in Aso Rock in 2019. Otherwise, his party will kiss the dust.

Meanwhile, Buhari seems to be reading Awolowo's mental magnitude that touches on discipline of mind on the part of leadership, because the President has made enough trips, and I have not seen him journey with his beautiful wife, suggesting that toiling for the nation matters to him than fun trip, where the wife would disembark from the Presidential aircraft before the President. Suffice to say that the world takes this President serious.

It is very difficult to have a man like Buhari, a Muslim Fulani who sticks with one wife, with no scandal or corruption profile, who had been the governor, Petroleum Minister, Chairman, Petroleum Trust Fund, Head of State without commensurate wealth. So, I pray he succeeds and there are indicators that he would succeed, and that this nation would be happier for it, because if he fails, Nigeria is doomed. Where are the honest people again? Dasukigate revealed the real identities of the so called leaders of the nation.

If Baraje likes, let him go back to his bag of tricks and unleash the known antics of breaking the APC, we are no longer bothered, because the difference between the PDP and the APC is located in the difference between the six and half of a dozen. All we want is for Buhari to deliver. After all, President Obama, the most successful President in United States came  on the slogan of 'change' and won his second term on the mantra of "forward" despite the fact that Republican (opposition) torpedoed his party, Democrats at the Congress. So, for Baraje to ascribe PDP's wining of rerun election in some southern states to what is coming is fallacious and illogical, and at best the reflection of a frustrated old horse.

Lest I forget, my gratitude to friends and family who sent their greetings for my birthday, I must say I felt the pleasure of the day through the prayer of my mother and  the inspirational acknowledgement of my wife, all the from the United States, messages from teachers, senior colleagues, colleagues, school mates, students who had passed through my tutelage, old and new friends. And it cut across the continents. I thank you all for identifying with yours sincerely.

Buhari And His Government Should Not Promote Illegal Possession of Arms In Nigeria, By Terfa Naswem

Buhari And His Government Should Not Promote Illegal Possession of Arms In Nigeria, By Terfa Naswem

Why is it that when Fulani herdsmen kill thousands of children, women and men in defenceless communities it does not even concern the federal government and does not even make headlines that can make the issue to be taken seriously but when Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Abia State kill Five Fulani herdsmen it becomes a very serious headline to the level that the federal government takes the issue so serious which DSS accuses IPOB of killing Fulani herdsmen? Why is it that DSS didn’t look seriously into Agatu massacre and other massacre in Benue State and other parts of Nigeria? From the way the DSS is behaving on this issue I hope the federal government headed by Buhari is not on the side of the Fulani herdsmen.

If Buhari and his federal government do not take this matter of killings very seriously, they will be indirectly promoting illegal possession of arms in Benue State and beyond because when the federal government can no longer protect the people they will be left with no option than to get arms illegally to defend themselves. And when such crisis calms down, such weapons can later be used for arm robbery and other criminal acts.

Buhari and his federal government should not allow this to happen because it will later turn Nigeria to a country of illegal arm possession.

EXPOSED: Positions Allotted To 91 Buhari's Relatives, Cronies' Children By CBN Gov. To Evade Sack

EXPOSED: Positions Allotted To 91 Buhari's Relatives, Cronies' Children By CBN Gov. To Evade Sack

Godwin Emefiele
Sahara Reporters - The offices and titles allocated to 91 of the persons tied to influential and highly placed Nigerians recently offered juicy appointments by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in a secretive and illegal high-stakes hiring process aimed at consolidating favour with the presidency, SaharaReporters has identified

The beneficiaries of the CBN’s employment gerrymandering include daughters of such figures as former Vice President Abubakar Atiku; Mamman Daura, one of the closest members of the president’s inner circle; former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Na’aba; Inspector General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase; as well as sons of Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and of Abdurahman Danbazzau, the Minister of Internal Affairs; along with a niece of President Muhammadu Buhari and at least 86 others.

The scandalous recruitment was first uncovered by SaharaReporters two weeks ago, but in the past few days, we obtained exclusive identification of the ranks assigned to each of the beneficiaries.

The leaking of the irregular hires by the CBN caused significant embarrassment for the government and the bank.  The CBN’s Director of Human Resources, Chizoba Mojekwu, was redeployed to a new position as the bank’s Director of Capacity Development and IT after CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, accused her of being behind the leaking of the list.

A top official of the bank told our correspondent that Mr. Emefiele had arranged the hiring of relatives of top party leaders and powerful government officials as a strategy for ingratiating himself with the presidency and saving his job.

Even though the list earlier released by SaharaReporters had 91 names, our sources at the CBN disclosed that Mr. Emiefiele started the strategy of using job offers to woo top government officials after Mr. Buhari came into power on May 29, 2015. One source revealed that in September 2015, Mr. Emefiele hired Claire Arase, a daughter of IGP Arase.

Since concluding the hiring of the 91 persons that were outed by this medium, sources at the CBN have further disclosed that three persons related to Senate Majority Leader Ali Ndume benefitted from the largesse, as the bank hired his daughter, his son as well as an in-law.

Our sources disclosed that each Senator was reportedly given an employment slot, meaning that the Upper House alone could have put in 100 persons in the implementation of Mr. Emefiele’s political job multiplication strategy.

While some of them nominated their wards, however, we learned that others sold their slots for huge amounts of money.

SaharaReporters learnt that the CBN often went to great lengths, including tweaking the names of the beneficiaries, to hide the actual identities of the beneficiaries of politically motivated recruitment, such as using the beneficiary’s first name and his/her father’s middle name.

In that schema, for instance, the bank disguised Maryam Atiku as “Maryam Abubakar,” while the son of Dambazau became “Nagodi Abdulrahman.”  In other instances, the bank used the maiden names of the hired persons instead of their married names, thus permitting Ali Ndume’s daughter access to her fat pay cheque as “Mariam Mohammed Ndume.”  It is unclear how their academic and professional certificates, if any, matched these names in the bank’s human resources records.

The recruitments are illegal because the CBN failed to advertise the vacancies as prescribed by law to allow all qualified Nigerians to apply for the jobs. In addition, the bank’s “political” recruitments did not follow principle of federal character set out for employment by government agencies and other public institutions.

“Jobs were just handed to the children of ministers in the current administration,” one bank official stated.

To add insult to injury, many of the new hires were asked to pick their department of choice once their irregular employment was concluded, the source said.

The job placement ranking obtained by SaharaReporters sees some of the illegally hired persons being given higher rankings than others.  This suggests that such new employees actually had years of experience in relevant fields before their employment by the CBN, but our sources at the bank affirmed that the ranks were given as gifts with a nod and a wink to some of them with no consideration for extant rules whatsoever.

Why several civil organizations have called upon Mr. Emefiele to resign his appointment on account of the scandal, neither he nor the government has responded officially.
