NLC Doubts President Buhari Is Still Alive; Here's What They Say

NLC Doubts President Buhari Is Still Alive; Here's What They Say

As controversies and confusion continue to trail the health status and the death rumour of President Muhammadu Buhari, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC has challenged the President to speak to Nigerians, if he is not dead as rumoured.

The NLC, in reaction to a comment by presidential adviser on media, Femi Adesina, that no one can force Buhari to speak, noted that public appearance by the country’s leader would put to rest rumors of his death.‎

General Secretary of the NLC, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson, told Punch that “In the social media, stories circulate without confirmation; I think that the easiest way is to talk publicly to the nation because the citizens are concerned about their leaders’ whereabouts.

“If there are those who orchestrated rumours and they are not true, the easiest way is for him to reach out to Nigerians through a public appearance and a statement.

“Nigerians have a right to be certain about the health situation of their President and the people who orchestrate rumours and unsubstantiated reports, one would wish for him to call their bluff by publicly addressing the citizens.”

In his reaction, Executive Secretary, Anti-corruption Network, Ebenezer Oyetakin, faulted the call for Buhari to address the nation.

He said, “I do not subscribe to that. It smacks of mischief from such people. We are Africans. We have cultural discipline on some issues.

“He has done the appropriate thing by handing over to the VP as Acting President. Let us be patient and maintain a sense of decorum and respect to the institution of governance.’’

Gov. Amosun Unleashes His Thugs On Us, We Were Beaten mercilessly - Ogun Striking Workers Allege

ibikule amosun
Striking Ogun State workers on Thursday alleged that thugs suspected to be loyal to Governor Ibikunle Amosun beat up public servants and labour union leaders as workers started their indefinite strike over unremitted cooperative union deductions and unfriendly labour practices.

It was gathered that some labour leaders and union members who had gathered at the secretariat of the state Nigeria Labour Congress around 8am on Thursday were attacked by the thugs.

One of those beaten, who pleaded anonymity, said, “The thugs came in a Toyota Camry and some others came on motorcycles; they descended on union leaders and some of us who had gathered at the secretariat, beating us blue, black.

“The thugs covered the number plate of the car, in order to shield the identity of the owner from being traced. This is sad.”

Another worker said, “They attacked our members at Laderin Estate, Kuto Roundabout and Oke Ilewo.”

The state NLC chairman, Akeem Ambali, who confirmed the attack on workers and labour leaders, said he had noticed some people trailing him since Monday after he addressed the press briefing where the strike was announced.

Ambali said two of the labour leaders and some members were attacked by the thugs, who the workers alleged were Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s loyalists.

He said, “This is the first time in the history of this state that workers will be attacked by the agents of the state. We have heard that some people have hired some thugs to attack us. But we thought it was all a rumour. But we were shocked this morning when some thugs came in a black Toyota Camry with number plate LND 555 BD to the place where the labour leaders were standing at Kuto roundabout.

“They attacked our members at Kuto, Oke Ilewo and Laderin Housing Estate.

“They beat up two labour leaders, Comrade Benco and Comrade Olayemi, among others.

“The NLC office has been sealed off by 30 armed men, but I have gathered that two cultists have been trailing me.

“My life is not safe and I have gone underground. My life is not safe with this government.”

But the Ogun State  governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2015 governorship election,  Gboyega Isiaka, and the state chapter of the Labour Party have  condemned the attack on labour leaders and protesting workers by suspected party thugs in Abeokuta.

Isiaka, who sympathised with the workers, warned  against politicising a normal trade dispute and urged  “the rampaging party thugs that thought they were helping the state government to exercise restraint.”

In a statement signed by the LP leaders, Abayomi Arabambi and Oginni Olaposi, they condemned the situation in which the workers were not allowed to exit the cooperative scheme while the deductions taken were not remitted.

Meanwhile, about 30 armed men of the Quick Response Squad and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps hurriedly took over the NLC state secretariat along Abiola Way, in the capital city.

Some security men also took over the two major entrances leading to the Governor’s office/secretariat to secure the complex.

But the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the police did not seal off the NLC secretariat but rather security men were dispatched there to maintain law and order.

In spite of the attack, the strike paralysed government activities, as workers stayed away from their duty posts.

When our correspondent visited Oke Mosan Governor’s Office secretariat where the civil servants’ offices are located around 8.30am, the place was deserted.

Public primary and secondary schools in the state were also shut while activities at the state high courts and magistrates were also paralysed. Patients at the state-owned  General Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta, have started moving out as many wards were deserted.

However, the state government has described the strike as illegal and threatened to invoke the  ‘no work no pay’ rule for those who stayed away from their duty posts.

The Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, while briefing journalists in his office on Thursday, said he was not aware that there was a strike.

Adeoluwa, who did not react to the allegation that workers’ cooperative deductions had not been remitted in the last 12 months or whether striking workers were being attacked, said the state government had not defaulted in its agreement with labour.

He said, “When they served us this notice, we were like what does these workers really want? It has been said in some quarters that it (the strike) is purely political. If there is a strike at all, it has no basis and no justification.

“All I will do now is to just appeal to the workers through you, I mean the little percentage who feel they have a case against the governmentý, that strike cannot be the solution and I want to challenge them to come out and state where we have defaulted from the agreement we had in March.”

Buhari Sets To RESIGNS As Petroleum Minister, Pencils Trusted Ally As Replacement

President Muhammadu Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari
Barring last minutes change, President Muhammadu Buhari will in a matter of months resign as the Minister of Petroleum and hand over to the outgoing Governor of Edo State Post-Nigeria reports today.

The President reportedly will appoint the out-going Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole as Minister of Petroleum Resources, after he hands over to the Governor-elect, Godwin Obaseki, in November, our source says it authoritatively gathered

Buhari, who has been guarding that position jealously, is now ready to relinquish it to his most trusted ally, Oshiomhole, who assiduously worked for his emergence as the President of Nigeria.

Confirming the plan to our source is a staunch supporter of the President, and who also has the ears of former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, from Ogun State said: ” Oshiomhole has done a good job as the Governor of Edo State.
“He has the trust of the President. Remember how he unofficially acted as the Spokesman of the President, before the appointment of Ministers.
He added, “He was the one who kept on exposing the rot in the NNPC, Ngozi-Iweala’s corruption breaking scandal, and many more. He is a man of passion and zeal.
“As I speak, the Presidency is contemplating compensating him with the position of Petroleum Minister, for the purpose of reforms.
“But some Northern cabals are against it”.
Recall, that Oshiomhole was once the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC President, and contested for the Governorship position of Edo State, under the defunct Action Congress, AC, and was re-elected under the party ACN, which is now known as the APC, in 2012.

At Last NLC Bows, Suspend Strike

At Last NLC Bows, Suspend Strike

The Ayuba Wabba led-faction of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) held a meeting on Sunday in Abuja on the on-going protest action against the increase in pump price of petroleum products and hike in electricity tariff.

A communique Wabba co-signed with Peter Ozo-Eson, NLC general secretary, said NEC reviewed the protest action and its impact across the nation, noting the sacrifices of its members, response of the generality of Nigerians, government’s attitude and the brutality of the police in some states.

It stated that NEC took special notice of the Ebonyi State Police Command “where our members were intimidated, harassed, arrested and detained unjustly.”

It reads: “After an exhaustive deliberation, NEC noted its protest action was informed by the twin issues of the unjustified and illegal hike in electricity tariff and increase in the pump price of petroleum products. NEC adjudged the protest action to be a success in spite of both internal and external challenges.

“NEC reiterated the correctness of its position on the twin-issues of electricity tariff hike and astronomical increase in the pump price of PMS and the hardship they portend for Nigerian masses.

“NEC also acknowledged that the temptation to compare the strike action with that of 2012 could be compelling but that the scenario had changed as both the actors and the terrain were different.

“NEC said before it had embarked on the action, it had anticipated a probable outcome and therefore was not surprised by government’s negative response. Nonetheless, it felt fulfilled by having the presence of mind and courage to identify its mission and fulfilling it, stressing that if a similar situation arises again, it will still rise and stand with the people.

“NEC therefore commended those who took part in the action in one way or the other and reaffirm its commitment to the struggle. The action, it reiterated was taken in the best interest of the poor and the weak and in drawing government’s attention to the dangers of relying on importation of petroleum products as a sustainable strategy for making available petroleum products. It expressed the belief that in the days ahead, time would prove its position right.

“Congress singled out for commendation, its state councils, affiliates and other patriotic Nigerians who at very short notice picked up the gauntlet for this struggle. Congress commends the leadership of the National Assembly and All Progressives Congress led by Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

“In consideration of the above, NEC after due consultation with its constituents resolved to suspend with immediate effect, the action it commenced on Wednesday, May 18, 2016. The action is thus hereby suspended.

“Congress will resume negotiations with government on the twin issues of the hike in electricity tariff and an increase in the pump price of petroleum products and any other issue that may arise thereof.

“It similarly remains committed to genuine dialogue within the framework of internationally established and recognized principles of representation.

“The Congress will continue to resist wrong legislations, policies and programmes and will always act in the best interest of Nigerians as it remains the only pan Nigerian organisation not affected by religion, region, creed, partisanship or primordial sentiments.

“The Congress urges the government to play by the rules in its engagement with its constituent parts, stakeholders and non-state actors as proof of its commitment to deepening our democracy and also in acknowledgment of the well-worn credo that what goes around, comes around.

“The Congress also urges the citizenry to be vigilant at all times as the price of freedom is eternal vigilance. The Congress commends all Nigerians for their understanding and support.”

I Can Swear On My Life, Buhari'll NOT Steal - Tinubu

I Can Swear On My Life, Buhari'll NOT Steal - Tinubu

Bola Tinubu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says he can vouch for President Muhammadu Buhari when it comes to managing Nigeria’s funds.

Speaking at the headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on Friday, Tinubu described Buhari as honest and straightforward.
The APC chieftain said that he was at the union’s headquarters to appeal to the NLC to shelve the strike.

An NLC faction led by Ayuba Wabba had declared a nationwide strike and protests on Wednesday.

But the action failed to gain much traction.

“I cannot say, I’m a part of the decision that created the situation. I can only say I noticed the communication gap. And I cannot say you are enemies of this government,” he told the executive of the congress.

“Today, we came here to appeal to you. Go back to history, we worked real hard to bring Nigeria on progressive path. For me a progressive government is all about the welfare of the people.

“Mr president, the former president of NLC, and senators are here to make it clear that you are not an enemy of a government that is progressive.

“We have refineries, but they are not serving our people. Is it benefiting the public? Why should we continue problem after problem, and continue to do the same things over and over again.

“We must try new things. I’m here to appeal to you to understand this government. You brought this government in. If change is our slogan, are we collaborating to make it possible?

“This is by the way, we must introduce history… the political history of the country is not being taught in schools anymore.
“In good conscience, many of you who are part of genuine labour struggle know is about progress and not cheap oil.

”We are shipping our labour, oil and opportunities abroad, which is not good for the country.

“Buhari is straightforward. We didn’t say we won’t have problems with him, but he has integrity.

“They brought in SURE-P, but the only thing about SURE-P is corruption. It was sure stealing, sure diversion….
“Buhari will listen to us, we will work together to make this change possible.

“I can swear that Buhari will not touch a penny for personal gain. He has that character and integrity to steer Nigeria.
“Let us look at a new mechanism of doing things.

“Let us work together for a government that we know is honest. My mission here is for peace, for us to return to the negotiating table.
“Let us build Nigeria, let us make it the centre piece of Africa.

“Let us call off this strike. I come to beg on behalf of my party.”

Tinubu was accompanied by Rauf Aregbesola, governor of Osun state and Kabir Marafa, a senator from Zamfara central.

Some leaders of Nigeria Labour Congress yesterday got more than what they bargained for as they were heavily resisted by some angry Nigerians at the Terminus main market area of Jos city yesterday when they tried to mobilise traders to embark on a strike action scheduled for today, Daily Trus Newspaper says.

An eyewitness account according to Daily Trust said; the labour union had arrived the market area in an 18-seater bus and a Jeep and began to announce to traders through a loudspeaker not to open their shops today but were told off by the traders.

Auwal Mohammed, a vendor in the area, told our correspondent that some youths had surrounded the union members and began to chant in Hausa, ‘Karya kukeyi,’ meaning, ‘You are liars,’ accusing the unionists of being sell-outs and pelting them.

However, the State NLC Chairman, Jibril Banchir, later sent a text message, saying the news of attack on his members at the Terminus area was not true.

Meanwhile, feeler from the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Abuja suggests Judicial workers at the Federal High Court Abuja were seen this morning going about their normal duties defying the strike ordered by Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC.

A renown human rights activist, a constitutional lawyer, now Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on prosecution at the Ministry of Justice, Barr. Okoi Obono-Obla confirmed that the judicial workers at Federal High Court, Abuja were this morning seen going about their normal duties. The lawyer who posted on his facebook page this morning saying; "Right now I am before Honourable Justice A.F.A Ademola of the Federal High Court , Abuja in respect of the case of Federal Republic of Nigeria versus Col. Mohammed Sambo Dasuki (rtd) in Charge No. FHC/ABJ/CR/319/2015."

"Abuja this morning is peaceful and quiet! Everybody is going about his or her business . Civil servants and workers have determinedly and unequivocally shunned the strike !" Obono-Obla stated.

Also a renown journalist with the Premium Times, Mr. Nicholas Ibekwe also envisaged that the current strike action called by the Nigeria Labour Congress could fail.

Fuel Hike: ASUU Defies Court Order, Mobilizes Members To Down-tool

Fuel Hike: ASUU Defies Court Order, Mobilizes Members To Down-tool

Despite Industrial Court order earlier today restraining all labour unions from embarking on the planned strike in protest of sudden hike in petroleum products by the Federal Government, the Academics Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has commenced massive mobilisation of it members to down-tool in compliance with earlier directive by factional Nigeria Labour Congress led by Ayuba Wabba, NLC; Trade Union Congress, TUC and other affiliates labour associations.

National President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, in a letter despatched to members of the congress nationwide and read at the University of Ibadan Chapter on Tuesday where the Chairman of the chapter, Dr Deji Omole addressed members; said that the chapter was ready for mass resistance to what he called obnoxious and callous policy of fuel price increment.

In the letter tittled ‘Increase in Pump price of Premium Motor Spirit to N145 per litre: Proposal for Joint Action with NLC’ stated that “ASUU members are called upon to according to our Union's principles, fully respect Article 2 of the Constitution of ASUU; that our Union and members shall work for the protection and advancement of the socio-economic interests of the nation. Branch Chairpersons are to conduct emergency congress meetings on Tuesday 17 May 2016 to mobilise our members for the action commencing on Wednesday. All branches of ASUU nationwide are to comply.”

Ogunyemi anchored the position on "delayed, partially paid and in most cases unpaid salaries for a number of months by state, federal and local governments, disguised retrenchment of workers, especially by State Governments, in the name of verification exercise and endless hunt for ghost workers and heavy taxation"

The UI ASUU boss, Dr. Omole, has described the policy of subsidy removal as the most criminal ambush from the Mohammadu Buhari-led federal government to empower the rich and cripple the poor.

The ASUU Chair who said that the common denominator to all Nigerians is poverty lamented that the same APC government that failed to pay civil servants for months is now celebrating budget signing with the legalization of black market.

While noting that many state governors who now align with the removal of subsidy ran their states aground through wasteful spending, the ASUU boss called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to beam search lights on state governors.

STRIKE: The Untold, Why FG/Labour Dialogue Ended In Stalemate - An Insider's Account
An untold reason why dialogue between the Federal Government and the Labour union yesterday night ended in stalemate.

According to a reliable source, the FG in a bid to stop the strike action, during the meeting with the Ayuba Wabba-led NLC proposed N120 per litre but labour rejected, describing it as outrageous, this was principal reason the dialogue was stalemated.

News Punch yesterday's reported that the Federal Government has concluded plan to table a reduced fuel pump price from the initial N145 to N125 has been confirmed as a fresh report as culled from DailyPost says the FG, at the dialogue with the Labour yesterday proposed a reduced rate of fuel pump price to N120.

According to him, the presidency said the best they could do was to reduce the pump price by N25, in consideration of the outcries by Nigerians.

“That was why the meeting ended in deadlock. FG proposed N120 per litre but the NLC insisted on total reversal to the old price, which is N86 per litre.

“They were not ready to accept the outrageous proposal.

“The outcome of the meeting with the Joe Ajaero-led group would determine the next line of action,” the source who would not want his name mentioned said.

However, efforts to reach the NLC General Secretary, Peter Ozo-Esun for confirmation could not yield any fruit at the time of this report.

STRIKE: 2 NLC Factions In Separate Dialogue With FG, Here Is What They Really Discussed Last Night

STRIKE: 2 NLC Factions In Separate Dialogue With FG, Here Is What They Really Discussed Last Night

The dialogue between the Federal Government and workers unions; the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress and their affiliates over the impending industrial action planned to begin tomorrow due to the sudden hike in petroleum pump price reportedly ended in stalemate.

An account by Punch Newspaper suggests that the government actually discussing with the two factions of the Nigeria Labour Congress-led by Ayuba Wabba and Joe Ajaero respectively.

At the end of the four-hour meeting on Tuesday morning, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Babachir Lawal, briefing journalists  said the two parties had “a fruitful discussion and will continue from where we stopped.”

The meeting, which ended at about 12 midnight, will resume at 3pm on Tuesday (today).

Lawal, however, refused to answer further questions from newsmen.

The Federal Government, however, began another round of meeting with the Joe Ajaero-led faction of the labour movement at about 12.15am on Tuesday after its meeting with the Ayuba Wabba-led Nigeria Labour Congress.

Wabba confirmed that discussions with the Federal Government would continue by 3pm on Tuesday (today).

Sources at the meeting said the labour leaders were not convinced by the figures presented by the government team.

Those who attended the meeting included Wabba;  NLC General Secretary, Peter Ozo-Esun; NUPENG president, Igwe Achese; PENGASSAN President, Olabode Johnson; TUC President, Bobboi Kaigama; Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige; Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang; and the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole.

Earlier on Monday, the Federal Government said it had no choice but to liberalise the price of petrol.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who stated this at a news conference in Abuja, justified the increase in the price of petrol to N145.

He also faulted a claim that the new price regime was about removal of subsidy.

He stated, “We have no choice but to liberalise the price of petrol if we are to end the crippling fuel scarcity that has enveloped the country, ensure the availability of the product and end the suffering of our people over the lingering scarcity.”

Debunking a claim that the new price regime was about removal of subsidy, he said, “There is no subsidy to remove because no provision was made for subsidy in the 2016 budget. Last year, the government paid out N1tn in subsidy, and that’s one sixth of this year’s budget. We can’t afford to pay another N1tn in subsidy.”

Justifying the government’s action, he said the fall in the price of crude oil had led to the reduction of foreign exchange available in the country.

This, he explained, had forced marketers to stop the importation of the product, thus making the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation the supplier of over 90 per cent of petrol.

Mohammed stated, “With the drastic fall in the price of crude oil, which is the nation’s main foreign exchange earner, there has also been a drastic reduction in the amount of foreign exchange available.

“The unavailability of forex and the inability to open letters of credit have forced marketers to stop product importation and imposed over 90 per cent supply on the NNPC since October 2015, in contrast to the past where NNPC supplied 48 per cent of the national requirement.”

He dismissed critics, who were comparing ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s fuel price increase in 2012 to the recent one by the Buhari administration.

Mohammed added, ‘‘Our answer to that is that there is no basis for comparison. The conditions in 2012 were vastly different from the conditions now.

“Then, oil was selling for over 100 dollars a barrel, compared to just a little over 40 dollars a barrel now. Then, the country was awash in forex, thanks to the high earnings from oil. Then the foreign reserves were high.

“The new price regime is simply inevitable.”

The minister also disclosed that the renewed insurgency and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta had drastically reduced national crude oil production to 1.65 million barrels per day, against the 2.2 million barrels per day planned in the 2016 budget.

He noted that the resultant fuel scarcity had created an abnormal increase in price, resulting in Nigerians paying between N150 and N300 per litre because hoarding, smuggling and diversion of products had reduced volumes made available to citizens.

He stated, “The liberalisation of petrol supply and distribution will allow marketers and any Nigerian entity, willing to supply PMS, to source for their forex and import PMS to ensure the availability of the products in all locations of the country.”

In a similar vein, Christians in the 19 northern states and Abuja on Monday backed the deregulation of the petroleum industry and cautioned the Nigeria Labour Congress against the proposed nationwide strike.

Under the aegis of the Northern chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, the association called on organised labour to shelve its planned nationwide strike over the increase in the price of petrol.

Northern CAN’s Public Relations Officer, Reverend John Hayab, who spoke to our correspondent in Kaduna on Monday, said the deregulation of the downstream oil sector was the best option for now in stimulating the nation’s economy.

Hayab noted that the proposed nationwide strike by organised labour could not be in the interest of Nigerians as according to him, “strike has never and will not be the option to revamping the economy.”

The cleric also proposed dialogue between organised labour and the government in order to find a common ground in solving the current problem.

He noted that the association was, however, not happy with the way the Federal Government removed the fuel subsidy without due consultations with other stakeholders.

The spokesman added, “We understand the pains and difficulties Nigerians are passing through. We share the pains and difficulties with them. This is a period of sacrifice.

“We don’t think going or embarking on strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress is the best option. The best option is a roundtable discussion.”

Fuel Scarcity End Dims As North Gets 160 Tankers, S'West 40, S'East? S'South? In New Imports

Fuel Scarcity End Dims As North Gets 160 Tankers, S'West 40, S'East? S'South? In New Imports

Fuel Scarcity
The Sun Newspaper - The expectation that the lingering fuel crisis in the country may turn out to be a mirage after all as only 6.5 million out of the anticipated 16 million litres was delivered over the weekend.

According to Daily Sun investigation, 80 per cent of the consignment (21,000 metric tonnes) which represents 5.28 million litres has been allocated to the north while Lagos, Ogun and some other South West states will share the remaining 20 percent or 1.32 million litres.

In practical terms 6.5 million litres translate to 200 tankers, with each tanker containing 33,000. With this calculation, the North gets 160 tankers while the South West will have 40 tankers.

Daily Sun, had exclusively reported the arrival of the vessel christened Sea Frontier which brought in the 6.5 million litres of petrol.

Loading activities at the Apapa and Ibafon depots as at yesterday was not encouraging as long queues of tankers dotted the stretch of Apapa Oshodi Expressway from Ijesha to Mile 2. At  press time, scores of tankers were also waiting at other loading bay including that of the Cooperative Society of the Kaduna Petrochemical Refining Company (KPRC) to be loaded.

Investigations by Daily Sun revealed that a vessel arrived at Capital Oil yesterday while loading activities was ongoing at Folawiyo as at 4.20pm with Techno oil loading in trickles.

Meanwhile, commuters across the country have been telling tales of woes as they experience challenges moving to their respective offices and business locations.

However, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has attributed the perennial scarcity to the inconsistencies in the Federal Government’s policy.

The NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, who spoke in Lagos, said contradictory utterances by the Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu on the present crisis have further aggravated the situation across the country.

Wabba said with the statement credited to the minister that fuel would not be available until May made the independent marketers to deliberately hoard the product, while others resorted to selling at skyrocketed prices.

The Minister is not consistent, at one time he said fuel will not be available until May, at another time he said April 7, so the marketers who are behind the present high prices know that they will not be sanctioned. They hoard products, despite the fact that they have fuel, so that they can sell at high prices,” he said.

The NLC president stressed the need for the government to be firm on the issue of petroleum, adding that it is high time the Federal Government addressed Nigerians on the present crisis.

“With the present crisis, we want the Presidency to tell Nigerians if the subsidy policy is still in place or not. The contradiction is what is causing the crisis,” he said.

Wabba who lamented that since the scarcity began, productivity has been at its lowest ebb called for a meeting of all stakeholders in the industry to resolve the perennial problem.

Wabba stated that Nigerian workers have been impoverished by the crisis  as they have spend more on transportation.

“This is quite unfortunate, people voted for this government because we believe that they will fight corruption. But we wonder why it is still difficult to stop all these people causing problem in the oil sector, despite the fact that they have support from the people,” he said.

The fuel situation in Benin and environs remains critical as most filling do not have the product to sell. The few stations that have the product are selling between N230 and N250 per litre. The scarcity has forced long queues, especially at NNPC stations and those belonging to major marketers as motorists keep vigil in expectation of supply of fuel.

Expectedly, many commercial buses and taxies have been forced off the road, thereby resulting in transport difficulties even as passengers are forced to pay high fares.

While Abuja has recorded improvement, residents of the South-East are still groaning.

In Lagos, traffic snarl occasioned by the activities of filling stations impeded movement, forcing commuters to spend longer hours in traffic.

At Agege Pen Cinema, Abula Egba, Egba, Yaba, Igando, Ikeja, and Sango in Ogun State, commuters had a hectic time getting buses while the few available ones hiked their fares by over 100 percent in a bid to cushion the effect of high fuel cost.

A ride from Egbeda in the early hours of yesterday, which normally costs N150 attracted to N500 while Oshodi to Mile 2, which ordinarily costs N100 was hiked to N150.

Most of the transporters who spoke to Daily Sun hinged the hike on the high cost of fuel from the filling stations, especially independent marketers who have refused to sell at the official pump price.
