SHOCKER: How Landlord, Residents Organised Lagos Monarch’s Kidnap
A landlord and two residents of Iba, Lagos, connived with suspected kidnappers to abduct the Oniba of Iba, Oba Goriola Oseni, for ransom, says a police officer. According to the officer, the landlord and the two residents are well known to the monarch.

These suspects, who are already fielding questions from detectives attached to the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja and operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team (IRT), allegedly sold information concerning the layout of Oseni’s palace and security arrangement for money.

The landlord and the residents were mentioned by the overall leader of the kidnappers, identified as Duba Furejo (32) aka General Duba. The three suspects were paid N800,000 out of the N15.1 million ransom for their roles.

The monarch was abducted from his palace on July 16 and rescued last Saturday. It was gathered that while everyone was thinking the worst had happened to Oseni, the acting IG, Idris Ibrahim, was synergising with Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, to ensure the release of the Oba and arrest of the kidnappers.

Ibrahim was said to have sent operatives of the IRT to Lagos and detectives had worked round the clock to ensure the kidnappers were caught. The detectives, using modern technology, tracked the kidnappers to Iyana School on Iba Road.

It was, however, discovered that the monarch, under heavy guards, was held captive in a makeshift shanty, built on top of water. The detectives decided to keep surveillance at Iyana School area, on the shore of the river.

They knew it was only a matter of time before one of the kidnappers would come out. General Duba was the first to come out. He walked into the hands of the detectives about 5p.m. Realising the game was up, he mentioned the names of his members, including the three suspects who gave them information about Oseni.

The police officer said: “The suspects were arrested between Saturday and Sunday. One of them, who brought out the monarch from their den and left him on the water to paddle alone, was arrested moments after he left the Oba. The overall leader of the gang is with the police.

His name is General Duba. “Three others, who brought the job of the oba’s kidnap and collected N800,000, have also been arrested. One of them was arrested yesterday (on Sunday), as he was about to go to Ondo State.

The overall leader and his second in command were both arrested. Isaiah Ododomu was the suspect who left the monarch on the water. General Duba went with them for the kidnap; but the second in command, was left at their base. They, however, shared the money together.” Duba is a native of Arogbo Town in Ese Odo Local Government Area, Ondo State.

The police source added: “The kidnappers’ second in command, Ododomu (40), also from Arogbo Town, was apprehended about 6a.m. at Iyana-Ipaja Motor Park, where he was about to board a bus heading to Ondo State.

He confessed to have participated in the kidnap of the Oba. “He also mentioned Duba as his boss. According to him, they were 20 in the gang, all in the creeks. He said that only eight of them participated in the kidnapping of the oba.”

Ododomu confessed that he and Blessing, still hiding in the creek, brought the monarch to the shore and dropped him about 7p.m. on Saturday. Although the monarch had been rescued, detectives are, however, still going ahead with their investigations. It was learnt that they are going after other fleeing members of the gang.

My 21 Days Ordeal In The Hand of Kidnappers - Lagos Monarch, Oniba Narrates
Oba Goriola Oseni, the Oniba of Iba community, who regained his freedom from kidnappers on Saturday after 21 days in captivity, narrated his ordeal in the hand of his abductors, whom he claimed were Ijaw youths.

The monarch, which was kidnapped in his palace at about 8.30pm on Saturday, July 16, by some gunmen suspected to be Ijaw militants who attacked the community in two speedboats according to Punch Newspaper said the negotiation for ransom initially fell through, the kidnappers forced him to sleep on the floor for days and exposed him to mosquito bites.

He said, “On that Saturday, at about 9pm, I was listening to news in my bedroom when I heard gunshots.

“When I came into the sitting room, the gunmen were shouting, ‘This is the king’. I was in shorts and was about to enter a bathroom. They killed my palace guard, carried me into their speedboat and drove away into a swamp.

“The kidnappers asked if I had seen them before or we had done business before and I said no. They told me while driving away that they were contracted to kill me, but they had changed their mind. They said I should cooperate with them. I told them they should rather cooperate with me and treat me like their father.

“The hideout was a shanty built on water. There were about six shanties on the water. They covered my eyes while we were in the speedboat. I fainted at a point, but they still dragged me.

“When we got there, they allowed me to take my bath. On Sunday, they assured me that they would take me back to the palace. Around 5pm on the third day, they called my family members. They were Ijaw youths; they spoke the language and prepared bitter leaf concoctions, which we ate.

“Any time they brought up the matter of ransom and my family members begged them, they would start arguing in the shanty. They would carry guns and start threatening me. But their boss instructed them not to manhandle me.”

Goriola said after the first ransom was paid, the gang split into two and a fresh ransom was demanded by the new group.

He said, “My children paid the first ransom. The ringleaders among the kidnappers spent the money and did not share it with the other members and they became angry. One of the ringleaders said he was going to the city and asked what he should buy for me. I asked for sausage roll. I did not know he was running away.

“On the second week, about 12 gunmen showed up and said they would now start a fresh negotiation. They said if my children did not cooperate, they would abandon me in the creek and run away.  They maltreated me and made me sleep on the floor. They removed the mattress and the bedspread.”

The monarch explained that the kidnappers brought out idols and made him swear he didn’t have more money than he claimed.

He said later, some of his family members brought the second ransom, adding that despite the payments, he was made to sleep on the floor and was bitten by mosquitoes.

He said, “When they eventually got both ransoms, they asked me to go. They brought me in a speedboat. When they heard one of them had been arrested by the police, they said they would take me back to the creek and I persuaded them not to, saying I would tell the police to release the suspect; they agreed.

“When they got halfway, they said the boat was faulty and asked me to find a canoe for myself.  I found one by the bush and got into it. I paddled myself to the land.

“When I came to an expressway, I saw some youths playing football. They seemed not to know who I was. I asked them which way was to the king’s house. When I crossed the road, some youths saw me and ran to embrace me.

“I told the gunmen in the creek that it was God who permitted them to kidnap me, because I am not an easy prey. I told them I was putting on only shorts and that was why they could abduct me. And they said they knew.”

One of the arrested suspected kidnappers who abducted the Oniba of Iba land, Oba Goriola Oseni, has narrated how they kidnapped the monarch and successfully collected N15.1 million ramsom before releasing him.

The monarch was released on Saturday by his abductors after spending three weeks with the kidnappers at the creek.

The police have arrested two of the suspected kidnappers and were paraded at the State House, Ikeja, Lagos, on Sunday. The two suspects are Toba Forejo and Isaiah Ododomu, both from Ondo State.

Narrating the account to newsmen on how they kidnapped the oba, Ododomu said nine people went to the palace to kidnap the oba on that fateful day.
He gave the name of those who went to the palace to kidnap the oba as Toba, Igodo, Mighty, Folly and Sam, while one Micah who is a leader did not go with them because he “he has a babe with him at home.”

He explained that the kidnappers were armed with two AK-47 riffles and three pump action guns which they used during the kidnapping.

Ododomu, who said he used to be a bunkerer, explained that since the bunkering business had been stopped, they decided to go into kidnapping.

He disclosed that the kidnappers first collected N12 million ransom and later demanded for another ransom and were given N3.1 million extra, making a total of N15.1 million which they shared among themselves.

“I am a bunkering man, when this government stopped the bunkering business, our leaders fomed another group and we started kidnapping to manage ourselves. I am a married man and I don’t have any job to cater for my family. When we started the kidnapping business, whenever they collected N500,000, they will give me N20,000.

“After this one, Toba, Igodo, Mighty, these eight people, went to Iba junction, they kidnapped the king, after they kidnapped him, they demand for N500 million, after that they reduced it to N40 million. They gave them N12 million at the first time. After that we gathered and shared the money.

“All our senior people got the lion share of the money. They gave Toba N1 million, all those Igodo, Micah, they collected N2.5 million and so on; for me, they gave me N100, 000,” he explained.

He added that after he travelled and came back, some of them agitated that the money given to them was small and decided to demand for the remaining N28 million balance, but noted that he was the one who prevailed on them to collect anything from the monarh’s family so that they could disperse before they were arrested.

“I told them that we should collect any amount and decamp because they can arrest us. Because of me, they agreed to collect N3, 100,000. The family of the oba brought the money and they dropped it for us at Igbehinadun water side. We went there and brought the money and they gave me N100,000. Toba and the others shared the remaining money. Our base of operation is at Izegemo creek in Ikotun area,” he explained.

Ododomu said he was the one who paddled the oba on the water to Iba while the others fled and that he was arrested.

One of the prime suspects, Toba Ferejo also said they were nine people who kidnapped the monarch, saying that he was arrested at Iyana School area.
