Punch Newspaper Goofed Again: Gov. Aregbesola Bought To Bullet Proof Cars In Recession And Doesn't Have Six

Punch Newspaper Goofed Again: Gov. Aregbesola Bought To Bullet Proof Cars In Recession And Doesn't Have Six

Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola
We read the story with the above headline on your Saturday, September 24, 2016 edition with utter disbelief.

Not that we were taken aback by the underlying motive to whip up negative sentiments against the government, portray it in bad light as wasteful and inconsiderate especially in the face of growing economic hardship, we are particularly miffed by the utter lack of depth displayed in the publication.

It is particularly sickening and a show of editorial mishmash for a paper to list some of the vehicles personally owned and already in use by a governor far before he became a governor as instances of lavishing “billions on bulletproof cars.”

Does it not call to question The PUNCH’s sense of judgment that a vehicle in which Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola was attacked in the well reported Oroki Day saga in 2006 is one of the so-called bulletproof cars it has accused the governor of “lavishing billions” on at a time of recession?

If PUNCH has forgotten that near-tragic drama, has its correspondent also forgotten that more than a year after Aregbesola assumed office as Governor, no official car was procured for his use? Assuming without conceding that there are six bulletproof vehicles in the fleet of the governor’s convoy, how does that justify the basis for PUNCH’s story which is recession? If recession was declared officially less than a month in Nigeria, is PUNCH suggesting that vehicles in the fleet of governors ought to be auctioned immediately?

In addition, is the PUNCH suggesting that because of recession, number one citizens of states saddled with delicate tasks of piloting affairs of their states must loose their rights to personal safety?

There are many questions begging for answers which the story raises. For the umpteenth time, we can only advise The PUNCH to allow the promotion of an egalitarian society, truth and balance be the basis of its editorial output.

In 2012, The PUNCH in an editorial, accused Osun government of lavishing millions to procure exotic cars for traditional rulers in the state. They bought no bicycle for any monarch. This is among several other false stories written about the state and the governor.

The story in question is another in the series of stories which call to question, The PUNCH’s editorial judgment.

Akeredolu's Victory In Ondo: Tinubu, Aregbesola Take Decisive Action

Akeredolu's Victory In Ondo: Tinubu, Aregbesola Take Decisive Action

Ondo Election: Tinubu, Aregbesola Meet Behind Colsed-door Over Akeredolu
The national leader of the ruling All progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his die-hard loyalist, the Governor of State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola may have recently met behind-closed-door to fashion out a way forward following following the shocking defeat of his anointed candidate, Dr. Olusegun Abraham in the just-concluded primary elections in Ondo state, report according to Information Nigeria suggests.

This comes after supporters loyal to Tinubu accused Aregbesola of being responsible for the loss experienced by their Leader’s candidate at the Ondo APC primaries.

Recall that Rotimi Akeredolu, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, won the Ondo APC primary elections by defeating Tinubu’s candidate, Olusegun Abraham by a slim margin.

Since the incident, the Ondo APC has been witnessing serious crisis as a result of the primary election as one of the contestants in the Primary election, Chief Olusola Oke has faulted the result of the election.

But, in a surprise twist, Tinubu has called for peace as he asked aggrieved party members to sheathe their swords and support Akeredolu.

The former Lagos governor, who was embroiled in an imposition saga as the Ondo primary election gathered momentum embraced the party’s emerging flagbearer, Rotimi Akeredolu despite the uninspiring utterances by the winner directed at him during the build-up to the intra-party election.

“In Ondo we must close ranks to achieve victory. The future of the state and of the party in the state should never be held ransom to insignificant personal animosities and perceived slights,” he said in a statement.

This report is unconfirmed as where and when the duo of Tinubu and Aregbesola met, our source could not disclose.

Judge Who Falsely Scandalized Aregbesola SACKED, 2 Others Judges Too Over Corruption, Bribery

Judge Who Falsely Scandalized Aregbesola SACKED, 2 Others Judges Too Over Corruption, Bribery

Justice Olamide Oloyede,
The female judge, Justice Olamide Oloyede who in 2015 petitioned the Osun State House of Assembly urging them to impeach Governor Rauf Aregbesola whom she accused of corruption has been sacked by the National Judicial Council of Nigeria (NJC), report according to Sahara Reporters suggests

Justice Oloyede, even as a serving judge in Osun State, subjected herself to be used by some top politicians to write the state's assembly to impeach Governor Rauf Aregbesola, whom she accused of abuse of office and corruption. The allegations which were later found to be false.

Also sacked by the National Judicial Council of Nigeria (NJC) is Justice Mohammed Yunusa and one other judge for judicial malpractices, our source reported

The NJC met on Thursday and Friday to consider several allegations of judicial misconduct by Justice Mohammed Yunusa of the Federal High Court, Justice Olamide Falahanmi Oloyede of the Osun High Court, and an unnamed judge from Benue State. At the end of its deliberations, the NJC decided that the three judges deserved to be dismissed for acts of gross misconduct.

An NJC source stated that Justice Yunusa had the worst case, with numerous petitions accusing him of receiving kickbacks and bribes. He was also accused of writing and delivering two different judgments in one case.

Our NJC source disclosed that one of the strongest cases against Justice Yunusa was his decision to grant an interlocutory injunction stopping the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission from investigating and arresting Senator Stella Oduah, a former Minister of Aviation, who is the target of an EFCC investigation. Ms. Oduah is accused of massive embezzlement of public funds and numerous acts of fraud in contracts.

Justice Yunusa had been in the public eye after federal prosecutors commenced the prosecution of a well-known lawyer, Rickey Tarfa, as well as other persons accused of bribing judges. Justice Yunusa was named as the major recipient of bribes from Mr. Tarfa, whose trial is ongoing.

The judge became notorious for granting injunctions aimed at stopping law enforcement agencies from carrying out their investigative duties, especially in cases related to corruption by major public figures. “We found out that Justice Mohammed Yunusa basically committed acts that amounted to subversion of the course of justice,” an NJC source said.

Our NJC sources said the judges were dismissed after an exhaustive investigation determined that they were guilty of various acts of grave misconduct.

Osun Hijab Crisis: Obasanjo Lauds Aregbesola

Osun Hijab Crisis: Obasanjo Lauds Aregbesola

Obasanjo and Rauf Aregbesola
The Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has been lauded by former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday for saying a certain word which ex-president said confirmed the governor’s neutrality in the conflict over the use of hijab by female Muslim students in public schools in the state.

According to the ex-president in Odeomu, Ayedaade Local Government Area of Osun State at the handover of a multipurpose hall and a library donated by Senator Yinka Omilani to the community , said the word spoken by Aregbesola doused the tension generated by the court verdict which approved the use of hijab in public schools.

Omilani, who was elected to the Senate on the platform of the then Social Democratic Party, made the donation to mark his 80th birthday.

Delivering Obasanjo's message at the event, Dr. Femi Majekodunmi,  one of Baba's allies, at a ceremony which had Aregbesola, Chief Shuaib Oyedokun, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, Senator Olasunkanmi Akinlabi; former Minister of Police Affairs, Jelili Adesiyan; and others dignitaries in attendance, said Obasanjo, who was presently in China, asked him to tell Aregbesola that certain things he said during the crisis doused the tension but he did not say what the governor said exactly.

He said, “He (Obasanjo) is in China now. He said the governor (Aregbesola) said something which confirmed his neutrality in the matter; that word went a long way in dousing the tension which recently heightened in the state.”

Obasanjo described Omilani, a former Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in the South West, as a great philanthropist, a great leader and a very dependable ally whose business acumen could not be rubbished.

Omilani said the multipurpose hall could seat 1000 persons and the library could accommodate 100 persons said he made the decision having studied what the town lacked.

He said there was the need to revive the reading culture among the youths and the old ones as well.

He said, “The library can conveniently accommodate up to 100 persons at a time. It has several shelves for the display of books and also has a section reserved as virtual library when fully utilised.

“It has been moderately kitted with books for a start and I wish to seize this opportunity to call on my fellow educated indigenes of Ode Omu to continuously seek ways of improving the library.”

Aregbesola lauded the donor and appealed to Nigerians to always seek ways of assisting their towns.

Osun Hijab Brouhaha: Why These Persecutions, Lies Against Me - Aregbesola cries Out

Osun Hijab Brouhaha: Why These Persecutions, Lies Against Me - Aregbesola cries Out

Premium Times - The Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, on Monday said neither his government nor himself has ever ordered the use of Hijab by female Muslim students in public schools in the state.

Mr. Are‎gbesola stated this at the roundtable on Development Collaborative Framework for Education Development and Advancement organised by the Development and Advancement in Western Nigeria (DAWN) in Osogbo.

Mr. Aregbesola challenged those who accused him of ordering the use of Hijab by Muslims‎ to bring concrete prove to substantiate their claims.
The governor challenged those accusing him of plunging the state into religious crisis to present a video or voice recording, written speech evidencing where he commanded or ordered female Muslim students to wear hijab on their uniforms.

“If I permitted Hijab, would the Muslims have gone to court to challenge it? Is that not contradictory? the governor asked.

“Is it a crime that I am a Muslim, is it because I struggle to be a good Muslim that everything I do is being misunderstood? I think I don’t deserve all these lies against me.”

‎He said the programmes he introduced into the state’s education system were part of the resolutions that came out of the education summit organised by his administration shortly after coming into office.

The programmes has no religious undertones, the governor said.

Mr. Aregbesola said the resolution of the summit, headed by Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, never considered nor recommended the wearing of religious garments in schools.

The governor said when he came to office, one of the first tasks of his administration was to convene an education summit which was chaired by Prof Soyinka.

“There is nothing religious in any of our policies,” Mr. Aregbesola said. “The fact on ground contradicts our opposition’s claim.
“The choice of my deputy governor tells it all, I knew she is a pentecotalist of the highest order before I picked her.

“Everything we have done in the line of education is in line with the resolution of our education summit.

“Against all speculations, I have not ordered the use of Hijab, I challenge anybody with evidence to come out and show that I have made a proclamation on Hijab.”

The governor was responding to a controversy sparked by a court judgment approving the use of Hijab by female students in the state.
The Muslim Community of Osun State and the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria had sued the state government asking the court to clear Muslim Students to use hijab.

The court ruled in their favour.

Following the judgment, some Muslim students started wearing head covers to school, a development that irked the state’s chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

CAN then arranged some Christian students of the Baptist High School, Iwo, to wear choir robes and other church garments to school to protest the judgment and spite the state government.

Speaking on education in the South-West at the conference, the governor said the downward trend in education was worrisome due to the role of education in development.

The governor told participants that his administration was constructing 100 elementary, 50 middle and 20 high state-of-the-art schools in addition to rehabilitating existing ones.

He added that the schools in the state before his intervention would have attracted rebuke from animal rights activists if government had put pigs there.

On the Osun school feeding programme, tagged O-MEALS, the governor noted that the programme provided a template for national adoption and implementation of free meals in schools, adding that he was invited by the British Parliament twice to share Osun’s experience with the world.
He said his administration’s efforts and intervention in education was massive and that there had been qualitative and quantitative improvement in the performance of pupils and general education of youths.

He said, “Those who say we are declining are not being honest. The following data will put a lie to the unfounded allegation of our detractors that the performance of pupils has gone down under our watch. In 2007, the state government put forward 36,171 candidates for WAEC examination out of which 2,483 representing 6.86 per cent had credit pass in five subjects, including English and Mathematics.

“In 2008, it was 37,715 candidates with 3,813 pass, representing 10.11 per cent. In 2009 it was 39,676 candidates, with 5,545 pass, representing 13.98 per cent. In 2010 it was 43,216 candidates, with 6,777 pass, representing 15.68 per cent. This four years gave us an average of 15.68 per cent.
“However, our administration started sponsoring candidates for WAEC in 2011. That year, we fielded 53,293 candidates, had 11672 pass, representing 21.98 per cent. In 2012, we fielded 51,463 out of which 11,431 passed, representing 22.21 per cent. In 2013, we also fielded 47,013 candidates, recorded 9,301 pass, representing 19.78 per cent.

“In 2014, we sponsored 47,672 candidates, 9316 of them passed, representing 19.54 per cent. The average performance for our first four years was 20.88 per cent. Compared with the average performance (13.26 per cent) of the three years that preceded us, the percentage improvement in performance during our tenure is a huge 57.46 per cent.”

UPDATE: What Tinubu, NLC Discussed Today At Labour House, Abuja

Tinubu, accompanied by some officials of the APC and Governor Rauf Aregbesola, said he came on behalf of his party, the Buhari government to appeal to the labour leaders to end the strike and return to the negotiating table TheNicheNG says

In a move designed clearly to massage the ego of the labour leaders, since the strike was largely ignored in many parts of Nigeria, Tinubu urged Labour to employ anger management in resolving the disagreement over the fuel price increase.

Tinubu explained the reason for the fuel price increase and said it was done in the best interest of Nigeria as it would allow investors to come into Nigeria to build refineries.

He contrasted the policy to the step taken by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012, when he set up SURE-P in 2012. The APC leader said what was sure of the SURE-P was corruption.

He said the Buhari administration would not follow the same path. He urged labour leaders to repose trust in the Buhari administration as it is one of integrity and honesty.

“This President is genuine. This decision was the only one left. Buhari has integrity and a character that is reliable”, Tinubu said.

In a response, Ayuba thanked the Tinubu for his intervention and promised to take the appeal to the affiliates of the NLC. He said the NLC was not opposed to negotiation with government.
