FAREWELL BROADCAST OF DR. OLUSEGUN MIMIKO, CON, GOVERNOR OF ONDO STATE

– FEBRUARY 24 2009 – FEBRUARY 24, 2017

My Good People of Ondo State,

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the sun (Eccl. 3:1). Exactly eight (8) years ago, I stood before the entire world to be inaugurated, as ordained by God, as Governor of our dear Ondo State, through the instrumentality of your votes, love and support, which remains unprecedented in many respects. Truly, the journey did not start on February 24, 2009. It commenced much earlier.

Recall that you, the good citizens of our dear Sunshine State, had trooped out en mass on April 14, 2007 to vote me in as Governor, a feat you repeated again, against all odds on October 20, 2012 – giving me the unique privilege to serve two terms of eight years in office.

That we had to wait for two years, and through an excruciating legal battle, before the first mandate could be actualized is all now a part of history.

At my inauguration in 2009, I made a solemn commitment to work for you, the good people of Ondo State, at all times and in all seasons. I enunciated a program, underpinned by our campaign manifesto, which sought to bridge the gap between the government and the governed; bring succour to the blighted lives of the poor and weak amongst us; give a fresh hope to our women and children; upgrade our environment; and generally reposition our State for the good.

Today, eight years on, by the special grace of the Almighty God, Ondo State has not only done well, it has indeed become a benchmark across the globe in several of our well-conceived and well-delivered programs. It is now time to go and turn over the baton of state to another governor. As I take my exit, I recall, in modesty, some of the programs that have these past eight years set our State apart.

Our life enriching programmes with the acronym ‘A Caring Heart’ was activated to propel masses-centered approach to governance. We developed frameworks for setting Key Result Areas (KRA) for each MDA, performance objectives and standard were defined while the activities of MDAs were constantly measured to ensure that they conform to the vision, mission and objectives of government. We developed conducive physical working environment to enhance customer – focused and result – oriented governance by enthroning reforms and designing scientific human capital development architecture to bring out the best in every public servant and citizen.

Through the instrumentality of our intervention in infrastructure i.e mega schools, the mainstreaming of the inspectorate institution in our secondary schools, to unprecedented intervention in our tertiary educational institutions, we have brought meaning back into education. We have thereby given our children the platform once again for competitive engagement with their peers all across the world. The percentage of students with credit level passes in five (05) subjects and above, including English and Mathematics in Ondo State public secondary schools shows that students’ results in WASSCE under our administration has steadily improved. In 2016 for instance, we recorded 67.68% in credit level passes in five (05) subjects and above including English and Mathematics in WASSCE/NECOSSCE as against the 25.42% of 2009. From 33rd position on the national scale in 2009 to 7th in 2016.

We have done everything within our reach to help assuage the private cost of education and to also rekindle the hope of our kids in a government that has orientation for service. That perhaps is responsible for the fact that the regime of fees in all Ondo State owned Tertiary Institutions remained the most affordable under our administration.

With a bouquet of programs and initiatives, not the least of which are our Abiye Safe Motherhood program, Agbebiye program, the chain of medical care initiatives encapsulated in the Medical Village and on top of which sits the relatively novel University of Medical Sciences, our health care program has undoubtedly enhanced the quality of lives of our people, rich and poor. It has also turned our State into a medical tourist destination for which we continue to receive compliments from the world over.

Starting from Akure, our State capital, we have in eight years been able to change the general outlook of our cities – making them cleaner, more functional, and more pleasing to the eyes. Our International Event Centre (the Dome) stands tall today as one of the best of its kind in the entire country. The Centre sits on 36.054 hectares of land (360,540,000m2). With different categories of event halls and a total capacity of over 7000, it can host many events simultaneously in a world-class environment.

For eight years, we deployed an Urban Renewal paradigm that is virtually a repudiation of the ‘trickle-down-theory.’ We renewed our markets and our motor parks. We built over forty (40) neighborhood markets across the state. In Ore alone, we set out to build a 1000-capacity trailer park, the first phase for 300 trailers of which has been completed. On the whole, our urban renewal program was good enough to attract an award from the UN Habitat in 2012.

The testimonies of our urban renewal efforts are evident in the successful completion of a new Akure-Ondo axis Motor Park, construction of an ultra-modern Automart, beautification of our towns, reconstruction and dualisation of strategic roads while road side slums and ghettos have been transformed into beautiful greenery and scenery.

In agriculture, our desire to have our educated youths back on the farm was canalized through our four Agro-business villages located at Epe, Isuada, Auga and Ore. Our Cocoa Revolution program continues to post impressive results, as the attention to the average farmer in Ondo State remains unprecedented in its impact. For example in the year 2016, we recorded the highest turnage of graded cocoa in the history of Ondo State. We added value to the production of agricultural products, as well as its processing and marketing.

We recognized early enough that without power, not much could be done in the area of industrial development. Thus, we embarked upon an independent 30KVA power generation project which is now at an advanced stage of completion. When finally delivered, it would turn the Ore axis into an industrial hub that would propel our State’s industrial development.

We have built on assets inherited from past administrations. We have for example, deepened our investment in the Oil and Gas exploitation and in a short while, we shall start earning direct income from one of them.

We successfully kick started the Ondo State Government’s exclusively owned Free Trade Zone and conducted all necessary Environmental Impact Assessment of the Ondo State Industrial City and procured the required license from the Nigeria Export processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) in 2015 to locate the FTZ at Eruna/Ogboti in Ilaje Local Government. We have sought a credible investor in developing a Deep Sea Port. When fully developed, it will be the first Deep Sea Mining Port in Nigeria.

We have secured License for the exploitation of our Bitumen deposit and also signed Memorandum of Understanding with notable Bitumen exploration companies. This will not only improve our economic base but also provide job opportunities for our teaming Youths.

Our Chocolate Factory at Alade-Idanre is nearing completion. The Factory, when completed will increase the income accruable to farmers.

Fellow citizens of Ondo State, I can go on and on to highlight several others of our life-impacting programs, but as direct beneficiaries of these programs, I am aware they need little or no introduction to you.

Our government in the past few weeks had carried out a comprehensive documentation of all of these programs and projects, including but not limited to the 663 quick win projects; the ultra-modern abattoir, the eight (8) completed dual carriage ways; the over 500 kilometres of road done across the State; the water plant in Aboto, Ilaje Local Government that has ensured that our people no longer live the saying of ‘water, water everywhere, but none to drink; the free shuttle scheme that transports thousands of school children on daily basis in the last four years; support for our artisans, etc.

Only recently, the State Government secured a Fifty Seven Million Dollars facility from French Development Agency for reticulation, transmission and distribution of portable water from Owena Dam. When completed, it will provide potable water to the State Capital and many towns and cities in the State.

It is important to note, however, for emphasis that several of the programs we had worked upon these past eight years may not be physical in nature, but are nevertheless no less important in their significance in the overall purpose of improving the quality of life of our people. We, for instance, moved the NURTW away from the culture of violence in their leadership selection process.

To the glory of God, we made Ondo State the most peaceful State not just in the Niger Delta and the Southwest, but arguably across the entire nation. We enhanced the self-confidence of students in our higher institutions, which has propelled them to the top of their game, either in the Law School, or the debating halls across the country. Our women no longer cut the destitute image as they ply their trade having now modern, clean and inviting facilities and stalls built across the State for their use. Our traditional institutions have been accorded their rightful place in the scheme of things as key players in the administration of our communities. I cannot thank the royal fathers enough for the way they partnered with us these past eight years in the determination to make our State the safest in the nation.

We have recorded successes and also have our own measure of insurmountable challenges among which is the inability to pay salaries as at when due.

We have made friends and admirers, we have also attracted detractors. We have not targeted anybody or institution to witchhunt but have been true to our determination of ensuring that the interest of the greatest number of people is the determinant of all the decisions and choices we made.

My good people of Ondo State, to everything there is a season, so the holy book says. It is time now for me to go, having enjoyed the unique privilege of serving as your Governor these past eight years. I thank you for your support. I thank you for believing in me, and standing by me through thick and thin. I value your support and friendship at all times. By God’s own special grace, I will continue to repay the honor you did me by standing up in your support at all times. I pledge to remain a part of our communities even outside of government.

What remains for me is to enjoin you, in the name of God, and for the good of our State, to extend your full support to our incoming Governor, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN. It is imperative we do this so as to keep our State firmly on the path of peace and progress on which it has been for the past eight years. May I then commit you all, the entire citizenry of Ondo State, our Sunshine State, our Place of Pride, into the safe hands of the Almighty God, on whose shoulder the governance of our State has rested these past eight years. To Him alone be all the glory.

Thank you and God bless.

EFCC Arrest: Gov. Mimiko's Plot To Abscond Before Handing Over EXPOSED

Olusegun imiko
The All Progressives Congress  (APC) in Ondo State says it has discovered a plot by the outgoing Governor Olusegun Mimiko to proceed on vacation ahead of February 23 handover date. The Party Publicity Secretary, Abayomi  Adesanya, in  a  statement in Akure on Tuesday, alleged that Mimiko planned to abscond before the expiration of his eight years tenure.

He said, “If this happens, it will create complexities and pit-holes in the smooth take-off for incoming Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN). “Mimiko’s plan is designed to create complexity and pit-holes in the smooth take-off of the new administration as against the seamless transition he once promised. “Mimiko is making plans to relocate to Canada or China, thereby evading possible arrest by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for interrogation and prosecution and to launder his last minutes’ loots. “The governor has concluded plans to proceed on a 10-day vacation and to delegate power to his deputy to act as governor prior to the handing over date.

“He had transmitted a notification letter the state House of  Assembly under  the  leadership  of  the  former  Speaker, Ms Jumoke Akindele,  some  days  before  her  removal  from  office  over  N15 million fraud  allegation. “This arrangement failed because the  former  Speaker  could  not announce or read  the  governor’s  vacation  letter  at  the plenary as  a  result  of  her  removal.”

Adesanya alleged that Mimiko planned to sneak out of the country to a neighbouring country through the land border, before travelling through a chartered flight to either Canada or China. “We,  therefore,  call  on  security  agencies to beef-up security and surveillance in and around the country’s borders to prevent the outgoing governor  and  his  cronies from  escaping with alleged state’s looted funds,’’ he stated.

Reacting to the allegation, the state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, described it as the imagination of the writer. He said, “I’m a member of the transition committee and am aware that the governor and the governor-elect met three days ago to fine-tune the transition programme and they had useful discussion. “I am aware that there are lined up projects to be commissioned by the governor between now and the handover day, so if somebody is coming up
that the governor is planning to proceed on vacation, that means such person is coming from outer space. “This is concocted information. There is no iota of truth in what he is saying.”

BREAKING: PDP REJECTS Ondo Governorship Election Result, Heads To Court As USUAL

BREAKING: PDP REJECTS Ondo Governorship Election Result, Heads To Court As USUAL

BREAKING: PDP REJECTS Ondo Governorship Election Result, Heads To Court As USUAL
In the usual manner that has always herald Nigeria election, the PDP has released a statement rejecting the outcome of last Saturday's governorship election in Ondo state.

APC's Rotimi Akeredolu was declared winner of the election. Read the press statement signed by the party's Ntional Publicity Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye after the cut...

The outcome of the November 26, 2016 Gubernatorial Election in Ondo State as declared by Professor Abdul-Ganiyu Ambali, the Chief Returning Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is a charade and not the true reflection of the will of the people of Ondo State.

2. INEC has however graduated from Inconclusive Elections as seen in Kogi, Bayelsa, Osun, FCT, Imo, Nassarawa and some other previous By-Elections in the Country to ‘Advanced Election Rigging’, as in the case of Edo and Ondo States Gubernatorial Elections.

3. It is common knowledge that the APC Agents openly bought votes of the electorates in the full glare of security operatives who did nothing to prevent such dastardly violation of the Electoral Law. It is not surprising that the electorates in Ondo state became so vulnerable to the corruptive influence of the APC because of the hash economic situation in the Country inflicted on Nigerians by the APC Administration which have indeed made all Nigerians virtually beggars in their own Country.

4. Nigerians will recall that we had persistently called for the postponement of the Election before Saturday, for at least two weeks to enable our Party Campaign and prepare properly for this Election as a result of the setback orchestrated by Justice Okon Abang and the charlatans in PDP who allowed themselves to be used by the APC to destroy our chances in the Ondo State Election.

5. The actions of INEC in collaboration with the APC led Administration left us no time to campaign and sell our Candidate and Party Manifesto to the electorates in Ondo State. Our persistent call for the postponement of the Election which was backed and supported by more than 20 other political parties were all rejected by INEC which were acting the script of the APC. It was a carefully planned and well orchestrated strategy to rig the Election well in advance by preventing the PDP from planning and campaigning for the Election. The APC has hereby introduced a new formula of rigging Election in Nigeria.

6. In view of the fact that the Election was blatantly manipulated from the beginning to the end to favour the APC, we vehemently reject the results of the November 26, 2016 Gubernatorial Election in Ondo State. The Election and all actions leading to it fall short of laid down principles guiding conduct of elections in Nigeria. We have instructed our Candidate and the Ondo State Chapter of our Party to proceed to the Tribunal to challenge the Outcome of the Election. We call on the Judiciary to redeem Nigeria's image on this matter as we request for the Total Cancellation of the Election in Ondo State.

7. Finally, we congratulate our Candidate, Hon. Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, and our Party in the State for the gallant performance at the Poll, despite the severe injuries inflicted on us before, during and after the Election.

We call on all our members and teeming supporters nationwide and Ondo State in particular to remain calm and continue to work with the leadership of the Party to move the PDP forward.

How Gov. Mimiko Aided Akeredolu's Victory In Ondo - PDP Senator Reveals Top Secret
The Saturday monumental loss of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to the ruling All progressives Congress APC has been attributed to the high-handedness of the out-going Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State, Ogun State Senator of the PDP, Buruji Kashamu has revealed

Senator Kashamu in  a statement signed by him said the refusal of the Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, to listen to advice on where his successor should come from worked against him and the PDP during the election, Punch Newspaper reports

The Ogun Senator said; “We told Governor Mimiko that after eight years in office,  the good people of Ondo State would resist the injustice of producing a successor from the same senatorial district where he hails from.

“It is not that Jegede is not a good material. He is urbane, intelligent and smart. He would have probably won had he come from any other senatorial zone than Mimiko’s.

“We told Mimiko that the people would not take anything that would look like a third term for him and his senatorial district. He would not listen.

“ Mimiko turned deaf ears to wise counsel, just like he turned his back on all those who helped him to power.

“Despite being the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Mimiko turned himself into Fayose’s puppet, allowing Fayose to lead him by the nose.”

Kashamu however,  also crticised the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee of the party over the statement credited to its spokesman, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, where he threatened to sanction those in the camp of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.

Kashamu, in a statement signed by him,  said that no one should mistake the pronouncements of the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court over the Ondo State PDP governorship ticket as their judgments on the party’s national leadership crisis.

On the claim by the spokesman for the National Caretaker Committee of the PDP,  Prince Dayo Adeyeye,  that the party would impose severe sanction on Sheriff and members of his faction, Kashamu said such action would fail.

But he said that neither he nor any member of the faction was afraid of such impending sacrifice since, he said, they were fighting for the interest of their people.

He said, “”No one is afraid of any sanction so long as we know that we are fighting to protect the interest of our people.

“A political party is a congregation of people with a common goal yet with various interests. In every political setting, people align and realign with the bloc or group where they feel their interest is better protected and guaranteed.

“If your bloc or group wins, it does not mean you should seek to emasculate the other because you never can tell what would happen tomorrow.

“I wish to advise that no one should mistake the verdicts of the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court over the Ondo State PDP governorship ticket as their pronouncements on the national leadership crisis.

“They are two separate issues that I hope we can still resolve amicably. Anyone talking of sanctioning any member of the party for fighting to protect his interest does not wish the party well.”

He said that the gale of sanctions in Osun, Ogun and Kwara states would further exacerbate the crisis in the party, adding, “the truth is, such a move that will further undermine the party and its leadership.

“Is anyone saying that if tomorrow the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court rule in favour of any of the national leaders, he should send all those in support of the other out of the party when all the 36 states are polarised along the lines of Senators Sheriff and Makarfi? No. That is not the spirit of party politics and participatory democracy.”

His statement read in part, “I have read the decision of the Court of Appeal delivered today (Wednesday).  We have nothing to lose as the Supreme Court sits on the same case tomorrow. JUST IN: Mimiko, Jegeder Wins At Supreme Court
The Supreme Court this morning ruled that the Court of Appeal should as a matter of expeditious, hear the suit filed by Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, the factional PDP candidate against Jimoh Ibrahim and Senator Ali Modu Sheriff faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP over the controversial Ondo gubernatorial election

The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the Justice Ibrahim Saulawa-led panel of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which is handling the various cases relating to the dispute over the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship ticket in the forthcoming election in Ondo State, to continue with its proceedings.

The five-man panel of the apex court led by the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, made the order after 10 applications asking for stay of the Court of Appeal’s proceedings were withdrawn by the applicant’s lawyer, Mr. Beluolisa Nwofor (SAN).

With the Tuesday’s order, the Justice Saulawa panel can go ahead to deliver its reserved judgments on the appeals filed by Eyitayo Jegede and a factional leader of the PDP, Ahmed Makarfi, challenging Jegede’s replacement by the Independent National Electoral Commission as the party’s governorship candidate for the election scheduled to take place on November 26.

Acting on the orders of Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja made on June 28 and October 14, 2016, INEC had dropped Jegede and substituted him with Jimoh Ibrahim of Ali Modu Sheriff faction of the PDP as the authentic governorship candidate of the party in Ondo State.

The Justice Saulawa panel had heard and reserved its judgments on the appeals after hearing them between November 16 and 17.

But on November 18, the appeal court panel suspended its proceedings with respect to all the pending appeals relating to the dispute over the party’s ticket for the election slated to hold next Saturday, on the grounds of the pending motions for stay of proceedings pending before the apex court.

The appeal court panel had ruled that it would stay proceedings pending when the Supreme Court would determine the motions for stay of proceedings and another setting aside the November 16 proceedings of the appeal pending before the apex court.

The motions for stay of proceedings were filed before the apex by nine respondents before the appeal court who were led by Mr. Biyi Poroye, who filed the motion before the Supreme Court are state officials of the Sheriff-led faction of the PDP in the South-West zone.

But at the hearing before the Supreme Court on Tuesday, Poroye’s lawyer, Nwofor, withdrew all the 10 motions seeking stay of proceedings of the appeal court.

The lawyer withdrew the motions for stay of proceedings to pave the way for the hearing of his motion seeking the setting aside of the proceedings of the appeal court which were said to have been conducted on November 16 in defiance to pending appeals and applications before the Supreme Court.

The application to withdraw the 10 motions for stay was not opposed by other lawyers appearing for other parties to the suit.

In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court dismissed the motions having been withdrawn without objection.

Reading the lead ruling of the apex court, Justice Onnoghen held that the motions for stay of proceedings having been withdrawn, the appeal court “is ordered to continue its proceedings forthwith”.

The order of the apex court on Tuesday paved the way for the appeal court to go ahead to deliver its reserved judgment.

Ondo Guber Conundrum: What Buhari And I Discussed Toaday At Aso Rock - Gov. Mimiko Explains
The Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, on Monday said despite the controversy surrounding who flies the flag of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state governorship election holding on Saturday, he was not contemplating joining the All Progressives Congress.

He said the courtesy he extended to President Muhammadu Buhari when he led party members to a rally in the state on Saturday was done because of his position as the president and had nothing to do with the party he belongs to.

Mimiko spoke with State House correspondents shortly after meeting with Buhari for the second time inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja, since the crisis over the PDP candidate started.

He said the purpose of his two meetings with the President was to brief him on the security situation in his state ahead of the elections.

The governor said, “This is my second visit to the Villa since this crisis in our party started. Like I said, as the Chief Security Officer of my state, if there is any credible threat to security, I owe the responsibility to Nigerians to apprise Mr. President of what is going on in the state.

“Mr. President was in my state to campaign for his party. I extended to him the courtesy of receiving him at the airport and seeing him off as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, not as APC (member).

“I understand that people have speculated that this means I am going to APC. There is nothing of such. I only extended him normal courtesy that protocols demand.

“As a governor and Chief Security Officer of the state, if the President is visiting, no matter the party he belongs to, it is only appropriate for me to extend the courtesy to him. That was what I did in Akure.

“And I have also come to brief him about the security situation in my state.”

When asked to comment on the ongoing crisis in the PDP, the governor said he was concentrating on the case in court.

Mimiko said once his candidate, Eyitayo Jegede, wins at the court, the state would erupt in joy.

“The whole of Ondo State will erupt in joy and it will be so self-evident,” he said.

ONDO Election: Reasons Why President Buhari Desperately Determined APC MUST Win At All Cost

ONDO Election: Reasons Why President Buhari Desperately Determined APC MUST Win At All Cost

ThisDay Newspaper - The outcome of Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State is a major test run for President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election bid in 2019, presidency sources have said.

According to THISDAY checks, the Buhari camp of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is determined to win Ondo State, first to make a statement in terms of who is in charge of the party, and two, to set the path for the 2019 general election.

Sources in the presidency hinted that with the decision to edge out certain players in the APC over the Ondo governorship poll, and the decimation of the most formidable opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the race, the camp of the president is out to test its popularity as well as capacity for political strategy in the lead up to the 2019 elections.

A source hinted that though the president is very keen on a second term in office, he is taking it slowly because of the state of the country, but would not mind taking his chances if the atmosphere is right.

It is for this reason the presidency is said to have gone out on a limb over the Ondo governorship poll slated to hold this weekend. The source noted that if, with all that has been at play in the Ondo theatrics APC wins, then Buhari would throw his hat into the ring come 2019.

However, if the outcome of the election does not go as planned, it may not necessarily mean that the president would automatically abandon his re-election bid, but he might only take a more cautious approach to his second term bid for the presidency, especially if the mood of the public remains the same.

Although the source did not address the allegation of interference by the presidency in all that has gone on in the state, especially within the PDP, it is generally believed that the presidency actually had a hand in the crisis in the main opposition party, particularly the bid to stop the candidate of Governor Olusegun Mimiko, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN).

Another source told THISDAY that the general consensus is that if the outgoing governor is able to get Jegede on the ballot, then the dream of the president to realise a Rotimi Akeredolu governorship might be in jeopardy, hence the alleged attempt to frustrate Jegede’s candidacy through the courts.

It is against this backdrop that the president’s foot soldiers are said to have resolved to not only frustrate the emergence of Jegede, but ensure that Akeredolu emerges the next governor of Ondo State.

Another reason the Ondo saga is believed to have become really messy is the alleged decision by a former governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, to extract his own pound of flesh from Mimiko, who was believed to have worked against him in 2014 when he sought re-election but was defeated by Governor Ayodele Fayose.

Sources informed THISDAY that Fayemi is taking the Ondo election personally because of Mimiko, and is the very reason the Minister of Solid Minerals Development has not hidden his desire to oust the PDP and Mimiko’s candidate at all cost.

He was even said to have been responsible for some of the problems the Alliance for Democracy (AD) candidate, Olusola Oke, had at the time he (Oke) defected to the AD.

All he wants, sources said, is to clear the road for Akeredolu and would stop at nothing including decimating whoever stands in APC’s way.

Another presidency source also volunteered that the angst of the National Leader of the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, over the party’s primary in the state, which threw up Akeredolu was self-inflicted.

He said Tinubu had no reason to hold a grudge against the party or Buhari over the primary because the National Chairman of the party Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, at the outset, gave Tinubu his due as the national leader of the APC and its leader in the South-west geopolitical zone by consulting with him and sharing with him the delegates’ list.

“However, Tinubu’s camp tried to hedge its bet by backing three candidates for the primary. Rauf Aregbesola was backing Olusola Oke, Tinubu’s wife, Remi, was pushing for Senator Robert Ajayi Boroffice, while Tinubu was supporting Dr. Olusegun Abraham.

“So Akeredolu who was not given much of a chance came and decimated the field of Tinubu’s contestants in a very close race to win the primary. If you recall, he only beat Abraham who was second by 31 votes while Abraham beat Oke who came third in the primary by 97 votes.

“The reason it was so close was because Tinubu’s camp was hedging its bet and did not want to put all of its eggs in one basket, so it could not make up its mind by backing one candidate against Akeredolu.

“As such, the votes that could have gone to Abraham was split among other candidates that they were backing,” the presidency source explained.

He also revealed that once Akeredolu emerged the party’s candidate in the Ondo poll, the APC, its governors and presidency were in no mood to change the outcome of the primary despite the recommendation of the review panel that it should hold another primary, citing other instances such as the Katsina and Adamawa primaries in 2014.

“If Buhari could accept the outcome of the Katsina primary in which his preferred candidate, Hadi Sirika lost to Aminu Masari, and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar accepted his candidate’s loss to Jibrilla Bindow, we would have expected Tinubu to do likewise by embracing Akeredolu as the APC candidate in Ondo.

“However, he has refused to do so, forgetting that the loss of his candidate to Akeredolu was self-inflicted,” he said.

Meanwhile, APC has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to postpone this weekend’s governorship election in Ondo State on account of the internal crisis in the PDP.

APC said that it opposes the call made by PDP on the electoral body to shift the election date to allow it settle its internal crisis.

A statement yesterday by its National Secretary, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, said that the crisis in the PDP was self-inflicted and as such the party could not hold Ondo State and the country hostage on account of its internal problem.

“The attention of the APC has been drawn to a bizarre request by a faction of the PDP on INEC to postpone the November 26 governorship election in Ondo State on account of the PDP’s internal crisis.

“APC calls on INEC to ignore PDP’s bizarre request and concentrate on delivering a free, fair, credible and transparent ballot on election day.

“The PDP in continuation of its wild conspiracies on the Ondo governorship election has also accused the APC of colluding with the judicial system, INEC and security agencies to ‘manipulate’ the outcome of the Ondo State governorship election.

“The PDP crisis and the aftermath governorship candidate tussle within its ranks are self-inflicted and the PDP cannot hold Ondo State and indeed the country hostage on account of its internal crisis.

“Instead of making the ridiculous election postponement request on INEC, the PDP should focus and redirect its energy towards putting its house in order.

“The APC is not party to any scheme to subvert justice and undermine the very progressive and participatory democracy which the APC fiercely stands for.

“The Ondo electorate is wise and will vote for the candidate with a proven track record of performance on election day,” it said.

Call For Ondo Governorship Election Postponement: Gov. Mimiko Gets Response From INEC
The call by Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko has attracted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, but on the negative.

Rather than oblige to Mimiko's postponement call, the INEC, has declared that the Ondo governorship election slated for Saturday, November 26, will hold as scheduled.

Gov. Mimiko and the Makarfi led Peoples Democratic Party had called for the postponement of the election to allow the Supreme Court take a decision on pending issues relating to its candidate for the election.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ondo State, Olusegun Agbaje, said on Sunday that the call for postponement was unnecessary, report according to Premium Times says

“There are 28 political parties contesting the election, we cannot postpone it because of just one party,” he said.

“This is a pre- election issue, it can go on even up to the Supreme Court, so we cannot wait for that. The election must go on.”

Mr. Agbaje noted that it was not reasonable to shift the election now because all the insensitive materials have been received in Akure.

He also said that the sensitive materials were also ready and now with the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“With this level of preparation, we cannot be talking about postponement,” he noted.

“Let them go and put their house in order, and settle their problems, we cannot allow that to hold us back.”

The official said a final stakeholders meeting will be held in Akure on Tuesday where the Chairman of INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, and the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, will address all political parties on pending issues.

However, PDP’s Publicity Secretary in Ondo State, Banji Okunomo, said the postponement is necessary to give all parties a level playing field given that all some matters were now before the Supreme Court.

“INEC has a hand in the candidacy crisis in the PDP,” Mr. Okunomo said. “But INEC is supposed to be neutral in this matter.

“Everybody is before the Supreme Court right now, which will begin to sit on the matter on Tuesday, we don’t know when it will finish.”

He said it was necessary for INEC to shift the election to avoid any crisis and because the commission is a party to the dispute.

Mr. Okunomo also argued that the shift would forestall a “foreseeable crisis” and ensure peace in the conduct of the election.

“It will be pre-emptive for INEC to go ahead with the election with a controversial candidate for the party,” he insisted.

Businessman Jimoh Ibrahim of the Ali Sheriff faction was listed as the candidate of the PDP by INEC on October 27, on the strength of the judgment of Justice Okon Abang of the Abuja Federal High Court.

Before then, Eyitayo Jegede of the Ahmed Makarfi camp had his name submitted to the commission and was the candidate until he was substituted.

The matter which had been at the appeal court, was to be decided on Friday, but had to be adjourned to allow the Supreme Court decide on the appeal brought by the factional chairman of the party in Ondo State, Biyi Poroye.

Mr. Poroye and others challenged the hearing of the matter by the Appeal Court.

Ondo Election Conundrum: Aggrieved Mimiko, Akeredolu Strikes Deal In Secret Meeting With Okorocha, Plots Tinubu's AD Fall
Aggrieved incumbent governor of the state, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, is reported to be holding talks with the candidate of the APC, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu, ThisDay Newspaper reports

Mimiko and his preferred choice, Prof. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), have been having a running legal battle with businessman Jimoh Ibrahim over the ticket of the PDP. Mimiko has reportedly told the PDP supporters not to join the Alliance for Democracy (AD) if the legal fireworks did not favour Jegede before the November 26 governorship election.

It was learnt that in order to firm up the arrangement, Mimiko held a preliminary meeting with the Chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha on Tuesday.
The meeting, which had the APC candidate, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), in attendance, took place at the Akure Airport.

Although no firm commitment was reached, Mimiko assured the duo of Okorocha and Akeredolu that if after the court processes Jegede did not fly, he would deploy his forces to back the APC candidate, source close to the Ondo State governor confided in our source

Said a Mimiko source: “It is true they met but not as people are speculating that Mr. Governor has already committed himself to the Akeredolu project. We are still confident we will win the mandate back. But if at the end of the day because of lack of time it happens that Jegede cannot fly, we have been told what to do.

“The governor and even those of us supporting Jegede believe that it is an insult for Tinubu to come from Lagos and install Iroko’s successor. It is an aberration we will fight, so rather than allow that, Iroko will be the one to swing support for Akeredolu to win because Ondo State belongs to us.”

PDP Offered Me N500m To Rig Election - Undaunted Ondo INEC Chief Opens Up

Olusegun Agbaje,
The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ondo State, Mr. Olusegun Agbaje, yesterday, while denying bribery allegation made against him by one of the candidates contending for the governorship ticket of the PDP in Ondo State, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim, said he had repeatedly spurned invitations from a serving governor, adding that Ibrahim’s grouse against him was that he refused a request for them to meet in London.

Agbaje said Ibrahim approached him through one of his friends who is currently residing in London. Agbaje, who is the Ondo State’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, also revealed how he was at a point offered N500 million to rig the last governorship election in Osun State in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, when he was serving there.

Agbaje, who spoke at a dialogue session with a coalition of over 60 Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, led by the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre, PLAC, said he rejected the money, which he said was brought in a van at night by certain chieftains of the PDP.

The Ondo REC, who said he was a former Director of the Department of State Service, DSS, revealed the money was offered to him at the IBB Golf Course in Abuja, after one of his former colleagues in the DSS, hoodwinked him into following him to the venue.

“So it baffles me now to see allegations being raised against me. I have never met Jimoh Ibrahim in my life. I have never spoken with him in my life. There is one of my friends, an old friend, Mr. Austin Obiagwu who was a former Managing Director of Broad Bank which later merged with Union Bank. He called me sometimes in April this year and said Segun how now, long time! He said when will I come to London, that he has been there for some time. I said ok, that I might be in London later in that April for the ceremony of one of my children and that I will see him then.

“He then told me that there is a friend of his that would want to meet me and that his name is Jimoh Ibrahim. I think he said he was in Accord Party. Either Accord or Alliance Party, I can’t remember. That was in April this year; he was certainly not in PDP then.

“I told my friend that I don’t know him (Ibrahim) and that I have never met him in my life and that I don’t think it is proper for me to see him because I made it a personal policy not to have such interaction with politicians.’’

Speaking on the Osun bribery attempt, he said; ‘’One of his colleagues “picked” him at the end of a conference he attended in Abuja and took him to the meeting where the bribe was allegedly offered. Agbaje said he was shocked and immediately berated his friend.”

“I told them that all my children have been trained and they are all married. I have a house in Lagos and another in Ekiti where I come from. So I don’t know what I will use money for at this age. I told them politely that I would not be part of their deal.”
He said: “The governor in my state had wanted to see me in the government house and I told him that this year, I am not coming to that Government House. He wanted to come to my house and I said you cannot come to my house.”

“I was the ICS of Anambra State, the then governor, who was a candidate, came to my office, he brought money to my office and I said Sir, we do not accept money, that my headquarters had provided all we needed for that election and as Director of the SSS in that region we don’t need the money.”

“The man was annoyed. He said whether I have seen the other people in the other party and I said Sir you don’t know me, that I knew him when he was Permanent Secretary at Dodan Barrack, that if not because he was a very old I would have known what to do. But very politely told him that we didn’t need his money.

“These are some of the circumstances in which I found myself in the past. I was so much flabbergasted when I was reading Punch of upper Sunday and saw that Jimoh Ibrahim mentioned a lot of things against me. I have written to my Chairman on this whole issue to clear my name, as well as asked for two prayers- to address the press and to also go to court.  The Chairman has approved the two. ”

“Ladies and gentlemen, I have never met Jimoh Ibrahim before, the allegations are false and at the appointed time I will take action. Like I said, politicians think that they can always buy everybody, but I told them that the Chairman did not send me to Akure to go and be in favour of a particular candidate.”
