PDP CRISIS: Gov. Wike, Party Chairman Fight Dirty As Jonathan's Peace Meeting Turn 'War Zone' ...Sheriff Storms Out

PDP CRISIS: Gov. Wike, Party Chairman Fight Dirty As Jonathan's Peace Meeting Turn 'War Zone' ...Sheriff Storms Out

ALI MODU SHERIFF
The peace meeting convened by former President Goodluck Jonathan to end the crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party ended in disarray in Abuja on Thursday.

The disagreement among the key actors in the party crisis also forced the National Chairman of the party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, to walk out of the meeting.

Jonathan, who presided over the meeting, had earlier in his opening address, begged the combatants to sheathe their swords.

As of the time he spoke, Sheriff had yet to arrive the meeting, but some other guests, including the Chairman of the sacked National Caretaker Committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, were in attendance.

As soon as he finished speaking, Sheriff walked in.

His late entrance caused a little stir as the sitting arrangement had to be hurriedly adjusted in order to find him a place close to the former President.

In the programme of events, those listed to speak after Jonathan were Sheriff, Makarfi and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Senator Walid Jibrin.

Instead of calling the two combatants to address the gathering, Walid was ushered into the podium, where he also appealed to the members of the party to forget their differences.

He said he would die a member of the party, just as he pleaded with those that would attend his burial to bury his party membership card with him.

Sources at the meeting said at the closed-door session, Sheriff was alleged to have insisted that as the national chairman of the party, he was going to address the audience.

It was gathered that he insisted that Makarfi would not speak since his committee had been sacked by the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt Division.

His proposal was said to have been rejected by the Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Nyesom Wike, who allegedly insisted that Makarfi should also be allowed to speak if Sheriff would speak.

A source stated, “The argument became so ferocious to the extent that Sheriff and Wike had to stand up, pointing fingers at each other while Jonathan looked with bewilderment.

“The former President tried to pacify them, but there was nothing he could do.”

He added that both the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu; a former President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, and a host of others, who were at the meeting also tried in vain to calm the two combatants.

At this point, the former President was said to have asked that some selected attendees should meet inside one of the rooms within the Yar’Adua Centre, where the meeting held.

Those at the secret meeting were Jonathan, Wike, Sheriff, Ekweremadu, Jibrin, Mark and the Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose.

Fayose was the first to come out of the secret meeting, the source added.

It was also gathered that Sheriff later emerged from the room and walked out of the larger meeting.

Sheriff, a former governor of Borno State, later spoke with journalists outside the hall of the meeting.

He said he was standing with the report of the Peace and Reconciliation Committee of the party, which is headed by the Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Seriake Dickson.

The committee had, in its report, outlined ways to end the crisis and that a national convention should hold latest by June 30 in Abuja.

He said, “The party, as of today, has one national chairman, which is Ali Modu Sheriff. There is no PDP meeting that will take place under any arrangement that I will not make an opening remark as a national chairman.

“I think that Governor Dickson made a proposal, and we have accepted it. Other people have a programme to bring agenda which is not part of the proposal.

“And as a national chairman of the party, what I told you people in my office that I will not be a party to anybody using me for his personal agenda; I will not.”

When asked if he had respect for the former President who convened the meeting, Sheriff answered in the affirmative.

He said it was because of the respect that made him return to Nigeria for the meeting.

“But we have a programme, which is initiated by the Dickson committee. Anything outside that, I will not be part of it,” he added.

Among those who followed him were members of his National Working Committee, led by the Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh; and the National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo.

Later, Jonathan, who spoke with journalists after the exit of Sheriff and his team, described what happened as unfortunate.

He nevertheless said the meeting would go ahead with the hope of ending the crisis in the party.

He announced that he would set up of a 40-member committee, which he said he would head.

Jonathan added that in his absence, either his former Deputy, Namadi Sambo, or Mark would stand in for him to lead the meeting.

He explained that the proposed committee would have six members of the BoT, six members to be drawn from both Sheriff and Makarfi groups, all the governors, Ekweremadu and other members from the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Nigerians still believe in PDP, says Jonathan

Meanwhile, the former President, on Thursday, submitted that Nigerians still believed in the PDP.

The former President spoke at the ongoing PDP Stakeholders Meeting in Abuja.

He stated that the former ruling party remained the only hope for the country, pleading with its members to bury their differences in order to end the crisis bedevilling it.

“We shall overcome the challenges and I can assure you that the PDP will rise again,” he said.

He added that all over the world, political parties lost elections, not because they had entirely failed, “but because in most cases, the people who gave them power in the first place, have decided to hand it over to another party in order to experience a different kind of leadership.”

He stated, “The fact that we allowed this process to take place peacefully and freely handed over power to the opposition did not only lift the profile of our party, but also elevated our country to the status of one of the world’s stable and reliable democracies.”

He listed the achievements of his party in power for 16 years.

The former President stated, “We were able to achieve this because our government really reformed the electoral and political process by giving the electoral bodies their true independence which subsequently opened up the political space for free and fair elections.

“We may have had shortcomings while in power, but we also recorded significant achievements and great milestones.

“Through purposeful leadership, we reformed our institutions, rebuilt the nation’s confidence, regained international goodwill and rekindled hope in our people.

“This is not a forum for chest-thumping but it is important we highlight some relevant initiatives of past PDP administrations.”

Jonathan added, “We transformed the entertainment industry, especially Nollywood, by not only boosting its capacities and international prominence, but also turning it into an attractive and viable sector that became an important contributor to the growth of our economy.

“We built the Kaduna-Abuja rail, the first modern rail in the country. We also pursued a successful automotive policy and established a promising industrial revolution plan.

“We equally enacted the Freedom of Information Act in order to give the people unfettered access to information on the activities of government.”

He appealed to the members of the party to work together and rebuild the PDP and strengthen it in line with the vision of its founding fathers.

He said, “We have to remind ourselves that the prolongation of the crisis in our party may have cost us so much in election fortunes in recent times.

“The loss of Edo and Ondo governorship elections is still fresh in our memory. It goes without saying that we cannot afford to have a repeat of that in the forthcoming elections in Anambra, Ekiti and Osun states.”

PDP Crisis: What I Told Sheriff Today His Dying Party - Obasanjo
News Punch had earlier published that the embattled factional Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP , Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff held a secret meeting with the former President Olusegun Obasanjo at Abeokuta Presidential Hilltop residence

Obasanjo after the meeting told journalists that he wished Sheriff well in the dying baby they have  put on his laps.

The former President described the Peoples Democratic Party, as a dying political party that is currently in comatose and needs to be taken to an intensive care unit.

Obasanjo wa a former chairman of PDP’s Board of Trustees, said the party he superintended for eight years was vibrant, but currently it has lost its soul, adding that he prayed that Sheriff would not be the one to bury the party.

He said, “And, as they all want to say now, ‘well, you were once the father of PDP’, I was once the leader, for eight years. I was the leader of PDP but the PDP that I was the leader of is not the PDP of today.

“The PDP of today, if you can talk of a party again as PDP, its soul has been taken out of it and those who allowed that to happen are, unfortunately, either in the country or out of the country unperturbed about the fate of the party and indeed the fate of the country.

“I have said to my brother (Sheriff), that I wish him well in the dying baby they have  put on his laps, because PDP is in comatose and he was of course not in the PDP, he has never been in the PDP until now.

The former president who reiterated his non-partisan stance, said he didn’t belong to any political party, Sheriff’s faction nor any other faction of the PDP.

PDP Highly INDISCIPLINE, May Die Soon - Gov. Mimiko Laments

PDP Highly INDISCIPLINE, May Die Soon - Gov. Mimiko Laments

 Dr. Olusegun Mimiko
 Dr. Olusegun Mimiko
New Telegraph - Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has raised fears over the possible survival of the party, saying the opposition party may go into extinction.

The National Headquarters of the PDP is yet to be reopened, 52 days after it was shut. Mimiko hinged his fears on indiscipline among the rank and file of the party members which has given rise to several litigations in different courts on the leadership crisis in the party. He spoke at the zonal meeting of the PDP held in Akure, the state capital, yesterday.

Both Senators Ali Modu Sheriff and Ahmed Makarfi factions are in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja courts contending over the leadership crisis in the party. Mimiko said it was indiscipline that made people to rush to court over issues that could be settled without interference of the judiciary. This indiscipline, he said, must be kicked out of the PDP before it kills the party.

Apparently referring to Sheriff, Mimiko wondered how somebody would think of running a political party based on court judgements when all organs of the party have not given him the nod.

These courts cases, he said, may eventually lead to the death of the party and foster one-party state and dictatorial tendency on the citizens.

His words: “Unless, let me repeat it, unless we exorcise this demonic tendency to rush to the court, this party will never find its feet: the future is jeopardised, the future will continue to be uncertain if each time anybody feels abused the next thing is to go to court. “I think this is one area we must tackle as a party if we must move forward. That is the biggest threat and challenge we have as a party.

Nobody should deceive himself, especially those who are not direct political practitioners, nobody should deceive himself that trouble in PDP will necessarily translate and remain as trouble within PDP alone. Ultimately, the PDP that is unsettled is a veritable origination of dictatorship  in our land.”

According to him, the high level of indiscipline in the party has culminated into series of leadership crises at the national level and challenges that also have overbearing effects in some state chapters of the party.

According to him, “there is no question about the fact that recent events within our party can challenge anybody no matter how strong hearted you are. Recent events in our party can set people asking; is this party really jinxed?” “One of those weaknesses is this demonic propensity to rush to the court for issues that can be settled within.

I think the level of indiscipline in the PDP is the number one challenge we have.” Mimiko compared the  PDP with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), saying “as divisive as APC is, in spite of all the different tendencies working themselves out in APC, I have not heard of their cases in court.

But, PDP has endless cases in courts. That is the demon we must exorcise from PDP if this party must progress.” Meanwhile, Sheriff has denied media reports that the senator representing Ogun East in the National Assembly, Buruji Kashamu, is his political godfather.

This is as former National Vice Chairman (South-South), Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, has predicted that PDP would come out stronger after its present crisis. There have been media reports that the leadership crisis in PDP was because of Kashamu who have been nudging Sheriff to keep on laying claim to the party’s leadership.

But Sheriff, in a statement yesterday by his media aide, Inuwa Bwala, described it as a smear campaign and urged PDP loyalists to work towards finding lasting solution to the crisis in the party.

“While it remains obvious that the said report was part of the mischief and orchestrated smear campaigns embarked upon by some people against the National Chairman, we wish to state for the avoidance of doubt that, he has no godfather in  politics and Senator Buruji Kashamu could not have been one.

“It is becoming clearer that the PDP National Chairman’s critics have run out of ideas on how to achieve their selfish agenda, hence the resort to blackmail and blatant falsehood in order to distract Sheriff from manifesting his capacity to reposition the PDP,” the statement noted.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who visited the party’s national secretariat yesterday reports that its entrance was still locked and manned by men of the Nigeria Police. As at 2p.m., the time of visit, no fewer than 10 police officers were seen within and outside the secretariat. A police Hilux vehicle from Wuse Division, marked NPF 6684C, was used to block the access road to the complex. However, few members of staff of the secretariat were seen hanging around under trees, nursing the hope of having the office reopened soon.

Armed police officers had, on May 22, blocked all the entrance gates to the secretariat, preventing human and vehicular movements to the facility. The action, according to the police, was to prevent crisis from springing up following the party’s May 21 national convention held in Port Harcourt.

Updates on Abia State Governorship Judicial Abracadabra

Updates on Abia State Governorship Judicial Abracadabra

The judicial abracadabra beclouding the Abia State governorship seat seem to  have had no head as at press time.

The Nigeria Police Force on Friday said it was monitoring events in Abia State, where a political leadership crisis in unfolding, threatening the peace of the state.

The assurance came amid concerns of a potential breakdown of law and order that may arise as a result of INEC’s decision to issue the certificate of return to oil and gas executive, Sampson Ogah, in compliance with a Federal High Court ruling on Monday.

Mr. Ogah had challenged the emergence of the state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, as the winner of the Peoples Democratic Party’s ticket in the gubernatorial primaries held in December 2014.

Mr. Ogah said Mr. Ikpeazu had defaulted on his taxes, adding that he submitted fraudulent tax documents to qualify as a candidate in the primaries.

In a verdict delivered by Abang Okon, the FHC in Abuja found Mr. Ikpeazu guilty of the charges and ordered INEC to issue a certificate of return to Mr. Ogah to pave way for his swearing-in.

Mr. Ikpeazu appealed the judgment and notified INEC of the development.

But the electoral umpire went ahead to execute the order of the court, saying it never received any notice of appeal from Mr. Ikpeazu.

Soon as he was in receipt of his certificate of return, Mr. Ogah embarked on a journey to Umuahia, the state capital, to prepare grounds for his swearing-in on Friday.

But while on his way, Mr. Ogah received notifications that Mr. Ikpeazu had secured an injunction from an Abia State high court stopping the Chief Judge of the State, the President of the Customary Court of Appeal and any other judicial officer from swearing in Mr. Ogah as governor.

Mr. Ikpeazu also declared a public holiday for Friday and Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday had already been declared public holidays by the federal government.

Mr. Ogah’s efforts to get sworn-in as governor on Friday morning was thwarted by the absence of the state’s Chief Judge, Theresa Uzoukwu.

Also on Friday morning, INEC finally acknowleged it is in possession of a notice of appeal from Mr. Ikpeazu, but said it did not include a notice of stay-of-execution order from the court.

The uncertainties prompted the police to intensify security activities across the state, its spokesperson said.
Don Awunah, the newly-appointed Force Public Relations Officer, said the police were on the ground to ensure that a peaceful atmosphere is maintained.

Ikpeazu.

'Coup' In PDP Secretariat As Sheriff 'Armed' With Own Supporters Storm To Forcefully Takeover, See Photos

The controversially ousted chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as early as 7am on Monday stormed the National Secretariat of the opposition party to take over the affairs of the party, but was prevented from gaining entrance to the Wadata Plaza secretariat by security operatives, News Punch has learnt.

Sheriff, who led his supporters to the PDP headquarters, told journalists that he would not leave until he is allowed entrance into the secretariat.

It would be recalled that the former Borno governor was the party’s chairman before the party’s national convention held in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, on May 21.

Before leaving the Rivers State capital that day, he announced the cancellation of the convention, citing court orders. However, other leaders of the party however, went ahead with the convention and also announced his sack and the appointment of a caretaker committee headed by former Kaduna State governor, Ahmed Makarfi.

Heavily Armed Police Seal Off PDP Secretariat, 'Chase Off' Sheriff Faction From Entering As Crisis Messy
The lingering crisis rocking the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP assumes a new dimension on Sunday as some men of Nigeria Police Force, heavily armed sealed and took over the premises of the national headquarters of the party, prevention entrance to the secretary.

No fewer than 30 armed policemen, who were led by an assistant superintendent of police, Mr. Ime Obot, prevented journalists from entering or coming close to the two-storeyed building, Punch Newspaper reports this morning

Five security vehicles were packed around the building.

Two trucks were used to block the road in front of the secretariat.

One of the trucks, with number plate NPF 5209C, was used to block the road from the headquarters of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

Three other vehicles, including a Hilux van, were used to block the back gate of the building which is used by the party’s national officers, especially the national chairman.

This step, which was noticed on Sunday, was said to have been carried out by the police to prevent the breakdown of law and order at the secretariat.

Sheriff, however, described his removal and the sacking of the members of the National Working Committee as a nullity.

Constitutionally, the ex-Borno State governor’s tenure expires on Saturday.

But some officers of the party, like the National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo, and the National Auditor, Adewole Adeyanju, including Sheriff, are in court, contesting their tenure.

They had secured a court order, restraining the party from filling their offices at the Port Harcourt convention.

Sheriff said the court action and the claim by the Independent National Electoral Commission that it would not monitor election into the above three offices were part of the reasons why he called off the convention.

He said he and members of his NWC were to meet at the party secretariat on Sunday.

Our correspondent gathered, however, that the policemen were deployed in the secretariat to prevent Sheriff and some members of his sacked NWC from meeting at the secretariat, Punch Newspaper reported

Sheriff had said the emergency meeting of his NWC would hold at the secretariat on Sunday (yesterday). He further stated that the constitution of the party does not provide for a caretaker committee.

In his argument, he said that the appointment of a caretaker committee to run the affairs of the party was alien to the PDP’s constitution.

His media aide, Mr. Inuwa Bwala, who spoke with journalists while the meeting being held by the Sheriff group was still ongoing on in Abuja on Sunday, added that the meeting was discussing the four court orders which he said compelled Sheriff to call off the convention.

He said, “In Port Harcourt, the court papers were served on the chairman. He decided to summon the meeting of the governors, members of the Board of Trustees and others. Before then, he said he had not been served the court papers.

“He told the gathering that there could be a problem if the party ignored the orders.

“He informed the governors that the convention should be deferred. But they (the governors) were angry because they had already pencilled down those they wanted to put in offices.

“To show our sincerity, we approached the court in Lagos to vacate the order, we were denied. As of Friday, all the court orders were subsisting.

“Because of the conflicting interest, some agreed, some did not. He (Sheriff) went ahead to meet with the NWC members and they said he should address a press conference to call off the convention.

“All members of the NWC members, except the Deputy National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, left. Their personal interest took the better of them. You can open the constitution of the party from the beginning to the end, you won’t find caretaker committee anywhere.

“If we are able to vacate the injunctions, we will meet and fix another date for the convention.”

Oladipo had earlier told Punch Newspaper correspondents that the group would address a press conference at the national secretariat.

However, the presence of policemen at the secretariat was said to have aborted the plan.

Report according to Punch Newspaper suggests that the policemen were drafted to the secretariat by the PDP governors.

The governors were said to have taken the action to prevent Sheriff and his faction from taking over the secretariat.

PDP Crisis Tears Southwest To Shred As Fayose, Mimiko Fight Dirty

PDP Crisis Tears Southwest To Shred As Fayose, Mimiko Fight Dirty

There seems to be no end in sight to the crisis rocking the Southwest Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The two factions hold parallel meetings today in Akure, the Ondo State capital, and Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State, to discuss its proposed national convention, The Nation Newspaper says

The Akure meeting, which is slated for the Government House, Alagbaka, is convened by Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who is leading party elements opposed to the zoning of the national chairmanship to the North and moves by the chairman, Senator Modu Sheriff, to extend his tenure beyond the May 21 convention.

The Ijebu-Igbo meeting, which has the backing of Senator Buruji Kashamu (Ogun East) and five PDP state chairmen, is being convened by Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose.

A statement by the PDP National Vice Chairman, Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe, said the Ijebu-Igbo meeting, which will take place at Omoilu Foundation Headquarters, will forge a common front on the zoning of party positions, ahead of the national convention billed for Port-Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Expected at the meeting are members of the NEC from Southwest, Board of Trustees (BoT) members, former and serving governors and deputy governors, former and serving senators, and former and serving National Assembly members.

Others are former governorship candidates and their running mates, former ministers and ambassadors, six state chairmen and members of the working committees, former and present members of Houses of Assembly and 50 selected leaders from each of the six states.

But, a source close to Miniko said: “The real meeting of Yoruba leaders in the PDP takes place tomorrow (today) in Akure. The governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, is convening the meeting on behalf of the leaders. We know that some people have slated a parallel meeting at Ijebu-Igbo.  But, that Ijebu-Igbo meeting is a non-event.”

According to the source, prominent PDP leaders expected at the Akure meeting include former Deputy Chairman Chief Olabode George, former Transport and Aviation Minister Chief Ebenezer Babatope, former Works Minister Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, former Majority Leader of the House of Representatives Hon. Mulikat Adeola-Akande, former Sports and Special Duties Minister Prof. Taoheed Adedoja, former Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chief Jumoke Akinjide, Senator Femi Kila, Senator Bode Olajumoke, Ambassador Dare Bejide, Chief Ladosu Ladipo, Dr, Doyin Okupe, Chief Yekini Adeojo, Chief Joju Fadairo, Prince Nekan Olateru-Olagbegi and Capt. Tunji Shelle.

It is not certain whether former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel will attend the Akure or Ijebu-Igbo meeting. Although he was present at the PDP elders’ meeting in Lagos two weeks ago, he did not speak at the meeting.

The source added: “It is possible that some leaders from other zones will also attend the Akure meeting in solidarity with the cause of the Southwest.”

Shedding light on what he described as the Southwest cause, the source said: “There is an effort to relegate the Southwest to the background in the PDP by some elements who are sacrificing our interest on the altar of their 2019 ambition. These are the Southwest elements backing the zoning of the chairmanship and the presidential candidate of the PDP to the North.”

The zonal body split into two factions a month ago, following the zoning of the chairmanship to the North. The Fayose/Kashamu camp endorsed the zoning and backed Sheriff’s chairmanship aspiration. Other Southwest leaders, led by George, opposed it, saying that the slot should have been zoned to the Southwest.

At a meeting of some PDP  leaders in Lagos, George said it was strange that the two critical positions of chairman and presidential standard bearer are zoned to the North, in utter insensitivity to the interest of the South. The BoT member also said Sheriff’s ambition is contradictory to his promise to hand over to a new chairman at the convention.

Ahead of the ratification of the zoning arrangement by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party, some PDP leaders from the Southwest had stormed the PDP National Secretariat to show solidarity for Sheriff’s bid. In the delegation were the chairmen of the PDP in Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti and Lagos. However, the Lagos chairman, Capt. Tunji Shelle, retraced his steps, saying that he was not properly briefed about the mission to Abuja.

Party sources said during the meeting of the PDP Governors’ Forum, which considered the Committee report  on Zoning, headed by Akwa Ibom State Governor ,  Mimiko pleaded with the governors and other party leaders to consider the agitation of the Southwest for the position, but without success.

At the meeting of the Southwest PDP Elders’ Summit in Lagos convened by George, party leaders, especially those attending the Akure meeting, vowed to resist the zoning arrangement, saying that it was in bad faith. According to the zoning formula, the national secretary, the national publicity secreatry and the national auditor are zoned to the Southwest.

Hope of a truce between the two factions dimmed this week when Fayose fired salvos at George, describing him as a spent force. He said it was curious that elders who have dominated the political scene for decades were unwilling to give youths a chance to actively participate in party affairs because of their over-bearing influence.

The Ekiti governor also said that George has an axe to grind with him because he refused to support his chairmanship bid.
