Ondo Governorship: Court SACKS PDP's Eyitayo Jegede As Guber Candidate

Ondo Governorship: Court SACKS PDP's Eyitayo Jegede As Guber Candidate

Eyitayo Jegede
A Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to accept Jimoh Ibrahim as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo State.

Justice Okon Abang gave the order in a ruling on an application for the enforcement of his earlier judgment delivered on June 29, 2016.

The judgment came after the electoral body recognised Eyitayo Jegede, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, as the governorship candidate of the PDP in the state.

The court, in the June 29 judgment, in a suit with number, FHC/ABJ/CS/395/2016, had ordered INEC to only accept the names of the candidates sent by the Biyi Poroye and Ademola Genty-led Executive Committee of the PDP in the state.

Poroye and Genty, who applied to the court for themselves and on behalf of the Ondo State Executive Committee of the PDP, said the post-judgment application was informed by INEC’s refusal to accept their candidate, as directed by the court in its June 29 judgment.

In his ruling on Friday, Justice Abang held that INEC had no justifiable reason not to accept the candidate submitted to INEC by the plaintiffs.

He noted that INEC participated in the proceedings leading to the June 29 judgment but failed to oppose the case of the plaintiffs.

The judge wondered why INEC did not promptly comply with the judgment when it did not have any objection to the case.

He further faulted INEC’s stance by not complying with the judgment as there was no appeal filed against the judgment.

The judge ruled, “INEC knew that issues were not joined by parties on the date of the election but issues were joined by parties as regards who INEC was ordered to deal with exclusively during the plaintiffs’ tenure as executive officers.

“As for PDP in Ondo State, the purport of the order of court being that any election conducted by INEC during the applicants’ tenure in office, INEC has no choice but to accept the list of candidates from the instant judgment creditors/applicants herein.”

The judge then ordered INEC to “accept and process for the purpose of its functions and activities in the organisation and conduct of the Ondo State governorship election only the nomination of Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim Folorunso, who emerged from the primary election conducted by the 1st and 2nd plaintiffs/applicants, as candidate of the 2nd defendant (PDP) in the said Ondo governorship election.”

He also ordered INEC to “reject and jettison any other nomination form(s) submitted to it by any other person(s) apart from the 1st and 2nd plaintiffs/applicants, indicating that no other person, apart from Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim Folorunso, is the candidate of the 2nd defendant for the Ondo State governorship election.”

Meanwhile, the Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the Ondo State chapter of PDP has urged its members to disregard the court judgment.

In a statement issued by the Publicity Secretary of the Makarfi- led faction of the party, Mr. Banji Okunomo, the party maintained that Jegede remained its candidate for the forthcoming governorship election.

At Last, Jonathan Breaks Silence On His Reported '2019 Presidential Ambition'

At Last, Jonathan Breaks Silence On His Reported '2019 Presidential Ambition'

Goodluck jonathan
Some section of the online media, News Punch not inclusive, were awash with reports that Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan declared the intention to vie for the Presidency again come 2019. But the former President has denied the report

Jonathan through his media aide, Ikechukwu Eze, denying the report said  the former president never made any declaration on 2019 election, either in May or this month.

Jonathan contested the 2015 presidential election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against President Muhammadu Buhari of the APC.

Before the final count at the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja, Jonathan called Buhari to congratulate him on his victory.

It was reported that Jonathan was inundated with calls from Nigerians “to recontest and salvage the economy from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

in the denied reports, ex-president Goodluck Jonathan was quoted to have said;
“A while ago I stood at the stood Eagle Square, to offer myself for election as the President of our beloved country on the platform of our great party; the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). I decided to run for office because of the many troubles our dear country faced. In a hotly contested election, we ‘lost’ the election to the opposition. We would have rejected the election results but decided my personal ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian.
“I made it clear then that when I leave office, Nigerians will understand the freedom they enjoyed under my administration. Are my I saint? Certainly not. Were my Ministers saints? Certainly not. But the opposition have unleashed untold hardship on Nigerians. I read from the news how power generation dropped to zero for a few hours. I read how the minister of State petroleum told Nigerians that he is not a magician to fix Nigerian oil problems. As we speak, subsidy regime has returned. As we speak the current government have reverted pump price to where we left it.
“Over the years, the Almighty God has made it possible for me to develop a bond with you and I am grateful for your support and understanding in the difficult periods we have journeyed through. Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, as I stand here this day being April 1, I declare to you that our stewardship has not been without challenges. We dealt with waves of insurgencies, vandalization of our nation’s pipelines and armed banditry. Let me crave the indulgence of all present here to stand up to observe a minutes silence in honor of fathers, mothers, sisters and brothers who lost their lives in Agatu. The situation in Agatu and elsewhere has cast a dark cloud on our Nation but we will surely win. A number of young men and women have been kidnapped by these criminal elements including our daughters from Enugu and Kanu States.
“During my tenure, we established a Presidential Initiative for the North East, the Victim Support Fund and the Safe School Initiative. These programs built Almajiri schools and opened brand new universities across all regions in this country. I read how the APC led government dissolved the governing board of universities and sacked the vice chancellors. We did what we did to better the lots of less privileged among us. Today, those dreams are but a mirage.
“I am grateful to all Nigerians for standing with me and my ministers despite the persecution we have so far face by the current administration. Let me also thank the leaders and elders of our great party, the People’s Democratic Party, for the opportunity reposed on all PDP governors and House of Assembly members. I am overwhelmed by the trust, confidence and support of the various organs of our party, the Board of Trustees, the National Caucus, the National Executive Committee, the National Working Committee, the PDP Governors Forum, members of the PDP Caucuses of the National Assembly, and others. This trust showed itself in the just concluded Rivers state re-run elections. This day affords me the opportunity to continue the conversation of development we started together. We must develop our country."
These the former President had denied totally.

Forgery Scandal: Things Fall Apart In Saraki's Camp As Ndume Joins Force With Buhari's Men

Forgery Scandal: Things Fall Apart In Saraki's Camp As Ndume Joins Force With Buhari's Men

The crisis in the leadership of the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly has taken a turn for the worst as a cold war has started  between Saraki and his deputy on one hand, and the Leader of the Senate, Ali Ndume, on the other hand, Punch Newspaper reports this morning

It was revealed according to Punch Newspaper that trouble started when Saraki allegedly discovered that Ndume was not on the same page with him on the crisis he was having with the Presidency.

A ranking senator, who craved anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the issue, confided in one of our correspondents during the week that Saraki suddenly discovered that Ndume, who was allegedly close to the Presidency, was no longer pleading his case whenever he was in the Villa.

The senator explained that since his emergence as senate leader, Ndume allegedly warned Saraki to be wary of Ekweremadu and other members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the red chamber who might want to pitch him against the presidency.

He was said to have specifically advised Saraki to avoid any form of confrontation with President Muhammadu Buhari, but should rather do everything possible to support his administration, so that the latter would extend a hand of fellowship to him.

The source said, “The trouble between Saraki and Ndume started when some of Saraki’s ‘men’ in the Villa started feeding the Senate President with reports of how Ndume had allegedly joined members of the Senate Unity Forum to work against him and Ekweremadu.

“Don’t forget, Ndume contested for deputy senate president against Ekweremadu in this Eighth Senate. His initial intention was to be senate president before realignment between him and Saraki made him to settle for deputy senate president.

“It was when Saraki discovered that all attempts by him to see President Buhari did not succeed despite Ndume’s assurances that he started listening to other close colleagues, who advised him to adopt a confrontational strategy against the Presidency.”

Attempts to speak with the Senate President on the issue failed as he is currently on Lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia, while calls put across to his deputy did not also connect.

However, when contacted, the Senate Leader denied knowledge of any face-off between him and the presiding officers of the senate.

Ndume said, “I am not aware of any crack in the Senate leadership. In fact, I am hearing that for the first time.”

But some of Saraki and Ekweremadu’s aides, who spoke with one of our correspondent off the record in separate interviews, confirmed that Ndume was no longer on the same page with the Senate presiding officers.

An aide to Saraki said, “It is true. Ndume is no longer on our side but there is no cause for alarm. We have taken necessary measures. We have been observing him for quite some time now but he has shown to us where he belongs.”

Likewise, an aide to Ekweremadu, who equally spoke on condition of anonymity, acknowledged the crack in the Senate leadership, stressing that Ndume had finally fallen apart with Saraki and his boss.

He said, “The truth of the matter is that the crisis did not start today. It was when the Senate President realised that he was being misled by the senate leader that they fell apart.”

One Party, 3 Chairmen CRISIS: PDP NASS Lawmakers Set To Defect To APC Massively As Pressure Mounts
The opposition Peoples Democratic Party National Assembly members may massively defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress over unending crisis ravaging the party that has produced three chairmen running parallel affairs of the party, News Punch has learnt

The party report says is now at the risk of losing most of its elected members at both chambers of the National Assembly especially from the non-PDP controlled states to the All Progressive Congress (APC) if it failed to find an amicable resolution to its crisis, report according to Nigerian tribune suggests

The chieftains of the ruling party are already in serious talks with lawmakers in both chambers of the National Assembly on the need for most of them to dump the former ruling party with assurances of several offers, including automatic ticket to return in 2019 general elections, Tribune reported

According to our source the most targeted states are Anambra, Lagos, Edo Kogi, Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, Yobe, Adamawa, Kaduna, Ogun, Oyo and Osun.

It was gathered that following the three divisions that emerged in the Party on last Saturday, APC leadership reportedly directed its leaders in the affected states to everything possible to bring the PDP lawmakers into its fold since the electoral law allows defection once there is a division within a political party without losing one's seat.

A member of the PDP in the National Assembly who confirmed this development to the Nigerian Tribune in Abuja yesterday said that this might forced the party members  to come together to resolve their   problems

"The pressures are just too much; the leaders of the APC are mounting serious pressures on us to come over to them, following the latest development in our party, the pressures are coming with various promises and am afraid some of our members may bow to the pressures since they will have nothing to lose," the source.

According to our source, "we cannot continue to waste our time and resources; we are tired of the ending crises, there are factions here and there in all the states and the zone and all fighting for selfish interests, we thought the coming of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff would unite the party but alas, look at what is happening now, PDP is supposed to be providing a credible opposition to the ruling APC.

This came just as the National Secretariat of the former ruling Party, popularly known as "WADATA Plaza" in Abuja remained sealed on the orders of the Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase.

The Plaza was sealed off in the early hours of Sunday, following the three divisions that emerged in the Party on Saturday with the three factions threatening to take over the party secretariat on Monday.

The road leading to the Plaza were barricaded with two trucks belonging the Nigeria Police Force, while the staff of the secretariat, journalists and visitors were politely turned back by the stern looking mobile police personnel.

The staff and journalists covering the party were seen in groups discussing the lasted development in the Party.

The Caretaker Committee headed by the former Haduna State governor, Senator Ahmed Markarif, put in place at the Port-Harcourt convention to oversee the affairs of the party did not show up as expected while the Ali Modu Sheriff-led National Working Committee, which rejected the Caretaker Committee and vowed to take over the secretariat was said to be attending a crucial meeting at a location in the city and the third faction led by Senator Ibrahim Mantu was nowhere to be found.

As at press time, the Board of Trustees of the party was said to be meeting on the crisis in the Party

BREAKING: Jerry Gana Led PDP Abuja Convention Picks Mantu, Adeniran As Party Interim Leaderd
Report just reaching us suggests that Prof. Jerry Gana led Peoples Democratic Party faction, which held own convention at Abuja today has also postoned the election of the party national officers, but picked Ibrahim Mantu and professor Tunde Adeniran as the national coordinators of party pending the time a substantive convention will be held.

Reported monitored via Daily Trust Newspaper says, the former minister of information, Prof Jerry Gana-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Saturday, held a parallel national convention of the party at the M & M Event Centre, Abuja, ‎which shelved the elections of national officers of the party.

The convention which ‎started by 10 am and ended by 12 pm adopted a former deputy senate president, Ibrahim Mantu and Professor Tunde Adeniran as coordinators of the party pending when the next national convention of the faction would be held.

Although the date for their next convention was not announced, the convention also ratified a 57-member steering committee ‎that would administer the affairs of the party nationwide.

A member of the steering committee, Chief ‎Dubem Onyia moved a motion that "in compliance with the court order, Mantu and Adeniran should run the party‎ until the next convention." Mantu and Adeniran were upheld as the co-chairmen of the party.

Addressing the crowd, Mantu who enumerated the achievements of the PDP during its 16 years of ‎reign as the 'biggest party in Africa' added that the 16 years also led to mistakes that needed to be addressed by Concerned PDP Stakeholders in order to deepen democracy in the country.

He said the stakeholder viewed the extension of the PDP national chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff's tenure by the National Working Committee (NWC) as "null and void" as the National Executive Committee (NEC) cannot grant any such extension under the party's constitution.

Mantu said NEC's appointment of Sheriff as chairman of the party was a "gross violation"‎ of the established procedure for the selection as Sheriff was not among the nominees sent by the North-east caucus of the party to the party's national leadership.

According to the former law maker, Sheriff's decision to go ahead with the "illegal convention in Port Harcourt in disobedience for a valid court judgement stopping the convention" signalled a wearisome trend that would further weaken the party.

He added that the Gana-led faction was aimed at rebuilding, renewing and re-branding the party to anchor the dreams of its founding fathers  ‎and give wings to the hopes of citizens who "live in uncertainty and surrounded by a growing culture of fear."

He said: "mindful of our role as elders and conscience of our great party, we the elders reviewing recent events‎ have come to the painful conclusion that the culture of impunity, disdain for democratic norms and utter disregard of our party's constitution, behaviours that brought us to the 2015 loss, are rearing its ugly head again.

"‎The current challenges in the PDP is symptomatic of our democratic heritage and signals the begin

PDP BoT Endorses Sheriff As Chairman, Election of New Chairman Barred By Court
Obviously in a move that could be termed as an endorsement of the embattled national Chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, the Board of Trustees, BoT of the party yesterday unanimously extended the tenure of the National Chairman to 2018, Vanguard News reported.

News Punch had yesterday in a headline error, which read; PDP Dethrones Sheriff, Elects New Chairman, Secretary, published the accounts of the PDP BoT's ratification of Sen. Walid Jibril a substantive BoT Chairman and the election of  Ojo Maduekwe, as the board's Secretary. The headline error highly regretted.

In a related development, confusion was said to have pervaded the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja on Monday evening when words filtered in that a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has stopped the party from conducting elections into the offices of the national chairman of the party, the national secretary and its national auditor Punch Newspaper reports this morning.

The court has also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission from monitoring the conduct of any election into the offices.

He is to now quit office in 2018 to allow for the emergence of a chairman from the southern part of the country, while the north produces the party’s presidential candidate for 2019 election.

On their part, the chairman of the party and its governors dropped the proposal to amend the party’s constitution at the forthcoming convention in Portharcourt, while also promising to revisit the conduct of state congresses that were contentious in some states.

The Board also confirmed the position of its chairman, Senator Jibril Wali, who had been in acting capacity, while also appointing Ambassador Ojo Maduekwe as secretary of the board. While Jibril was appointed unanimously, Ojo Maduekwe’s appointment followed the stepping down of his sole challenger, Senator Stella Omu.

PDP is planning to hold its national convention in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Saturday, May 21.

The order to restrain the party from conducting the elections followed a case brought before the court by the National Chairman of the party, Senator Modu Sheriff; the National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo; and the National Auditor, Alhaji Fatai Adeyanju, who were listed as 1st, 2nd and 3rd plaintiffs in the case.

In the case with suit number FHC/L/CS/61 3/2016, dated 6th of May, 2016, both the INEC and the PDP were listed as the 1st and 2nd defendants.

The plaintiffs prayed for an order of interlocutory injunction restraining the 2nd defendant from conducting any election into the offices of the National Chairman, National Secretary and National Auditor occupied  by the 1st, 2nd and 3rd plaintiffs respectively, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

An order of interlocutory injunction restraining the 1st defendant/respondent from monitoring and or recognising the conduct of any election by the 2nd defendant/respondent into the offices of the National Chairman, National Secretary and National Auditor occupied by the 1st, 2nd and 3rd plaintiffs respectively, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

According to the court order dated May 12, 2016 which was shown to reporters at the party secretariat in Abuja, the affidavit in support of the Motion on Notice and the exhibits attached were deposed to by Adeyanju.

In response to the submission made by the plaintiffs’ counsel, the court presided over by Justice I.N. Buba, granted the following: “An order of interlocutory injunction as requested by the plaintiffs/applicants restraining the 2nd defendant/respondent from conducting any election into the offices of the National Chairman, National Secretary and National Auditor occupied by the 1st, 2nd and 3rd plaintiffs respectively, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

The substantive case has been adjourned till May 24, 2016.

Efforts made by our correspondent to get the reaction of the party’s National Legal Adviser, Mr. Victor Kwon, failed as he did not pick the calls made to his telephone.

But the national secretary said the party was aware of the court order.

A photo of 2019 campaign poster of proposed joint ticket of former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff and the governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Peter Ayodele Fayose has surfaced online.

Though the 2019 Presidential election could be said to be far, at least 3 years from now, but the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP who mulling how seizing power back from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC is leaving no stone unturned. The party, which had zoned the national chairmanship of the party to the northern part of the country, have also resolved to pick it Presidential candidate from the same zone.

Unfortunately, Ali Modu Sheriff is already tagged and accused as Boko Haram sponsor. Fayose, highly controversial too; ranging from slaping a Chief Judge of his state, stomach infrastructure to Ekiti rigging scandal. How the PDP will convince Nigerians to vote for these guys, i can't still comprehend.

The APC on the other hand, still in the euphoria of victory harped on Change still finding it difficult to convince Nigerians it has actually brought the desired change. The Party, the government have been bedeviled by various challenges that seem insurmountable. Still full of hope, Nigerians are yet to visibly reap from their decision to Change from PDP To APC.

The only visible achievement of the APC is no doubt the fight against corruption. Though many see it as witchhunt of political opponents. Be it witchhunt or 'wizardhunt' so to say, the big question is that; are the accused innocent?

It's Too Early To Condemn Buhari - PDP Chieftain, Bode George

Chief Olabode George, a former southwest Vice-Chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has said it is too early to batch President Muhammadu Buhari-led government of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Chief George in an interview with the Daily Sun opined that the President grapples with the myriads of problems confronting the country urged Nigerians to be patient with Buhari. He said  he has refrained from joining issues with him because, “it is just a year and personally, I don’t believe this is the time to start kicking them”, described Nigerians as “ very impatient.”

He, however, identified the congregation of different groups in the party which has defied proper fusion as the major cause of the many problems afflicting the government which has slowed down progress. Describing the President’s All Progressives Congress (APC) as a “congregation of strange bed fellows”, he averred that the instability in the party has frustrated the expectations and hopes of Nigerians on the government, adding that, “if you don’t have a solid political foundation, forget about any economic growth.”

George further advised the APC not to make the mistake of the PDP by allowing these crises and divisions, which he blamed for the latter’s ouster from government in the 2015 presidential elections.

“For me, it is still too early. Understandably, they came from different groups that make up the party. They are still struggling…politics and political activities are the foundations for economic growth.

“If you don’t have a solid political foundation, forget about any economic growth. It is sine qua non. There is CPC, ACN, APGA, nPDP. It is a congregation of strange bedfellows. It will take time for them to melt together.

“We don’t want to go into that crises and the divisions, because we know what happened to our party that we got a bloody nose. Thank God it was not a technical knockout”

Fights To Replace Saraki Intense; North-Central Picks A Consensus, PDP Picks Ekweremadu

Senators from the North-central geopolitical zone, under the auspices of the Forum of North-central Senators, have resolved that one of their own emerges as the next senate president in the event of Bukola Saraki’s removal by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), ThisDay reports

Saraki is being tried by the tribunal for false declaration of assets when he was the governor of Kwara State between 2007 and 2011.

According to our source, a senator from the zone yesterday  said: “It is expected that the North-central zone retains the seat because in the present dispensation, the zone only has the Senate presidency allotted to us.”

The senator, who elected to speak anonymously, disclosed that several meetings across political divides had been held recently on the issue.

He said: “It is becoming obvious that the present occupant of the seat would likely give in to the pressure coming from his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

“So we have weighed the situation surrounding Saraki’s situation and have come to the resolution that we must work across board to have one of our own replace him. This is in the spirit of political correctness and inclusion.

“When you look at the crop of senators from the zone, we have experienced lawmakers comprising ranking and knowledgeable senators capable of administering the Senate. Some of us have combined experience of both being in the executive and now as legislators.

“Agreeably, the zone parades the best crop of lawmakers in the present Senate and it is rightly expected that we retain the leadership of the Senate at this crucial time.

“What we have done is to look at individual senator’s profiles and taken crucial Senate service requirements into consideration and I can tell you that we have a consensus on who is most suited for the job."

“It is in the overall interest of the zone to keep the seat without any compromise at this point in time and this is what we have decided to do regardless of political affiliations.”

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may field Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu as a likely replacement if there is vacancy following the Chairman of All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun said in a recent interview that his party would only consider it as sacrifice for Change should the opposition PDP emerges as the next President of the Senate.

Some members of the opposition party are thinking in that direction following the body language of the Unity Forum and the Like Minds camps in the Senate.

Members of both camps, who spoke with our correspondent yesterday evening, revealed that they are considering Ekweremadu as a possible replacement for the Senate president, based on his experience and the fact that he has been Saraki’s deputy since last June.

Oyegun's Outburst: PDP Back-down On Saraki, Roots For Ekweremadu, APC Senators Oblige
Barely twenty four hours after the national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, openly declared that the party will not mind if a member of another political party takes over from Senate president, Dr. Bukola Saraki, if he leaves office based on the asset declaration trial, there are indications that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may field Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu as a likely replacement if there is vacancy.

Daily Sun gathered that some members of the opposition party are thinking in that direction following the body language of the Unity Forum and the Like Minds camps in the Senate.

Members of both camps, who spoke with our correspondent yesterday evening, revealed that they are considering Ekweremadu as a possible replacement for the Senate president, based on his experience and the fact that he has been Saraki’s deputy since last June.

A senator from the South-East who is a member of the kitchen cabinet of the Senate president, told our correspondent that members of Like Minds group, who are predominantly PDP, were already mooting the idea of Ekweremadu succeeding Saraki. He said since it was becoming glaring that Saraki was losing support, both from the party and the Senate, it was time to shop for a senator who will carry everyone along as his possible replacement.

He said though the idea of Ekweremadu succeeding Saraki has not formally been discussed in their regular meetings held at the Maitama residence of Saraki, lawmakers were already throwing their weight behind the Deputy Senate President.

The source said: “We hold meetings everyday and we strategise on the way forward. But many of us were shocked when we read yesterday (Saturday) that the APC was willing to concede the Senate presidency seat to us (PDP). We did not expect it to end like this.

“We have always stood by Saraki and we will stand by him till the end. But we also need to start putting the interest of our party (PDP) first. We have started talking to ourselves and we have started mounting pressure on Ekweremadu to gear up and be prepared to succeed Saraki. He has been the Deputy Senate President for three times now. PDP will take over and Ekweremadu may just be the man.”

In a dramatic twist, the Unity Forum has promised to work with Ekweremadu in the event that he emerges as Senate President. A prominent figure of the forum from the North-West who had a telephone chat with our correspondent yesterday, aligned with the position of the APC national chairman.

He said the forum was ready to work with Ekweremadu if he emerges as Senate President. He argued that it was safer to have an opposition member as Senate President than Saraki, who he said has repeatedly defied the party, APC.

He said: “If Ekweremadu emerges through a democratic means, we will support him. We cannot have our own who is fighting us. We will rather support a stranger that we know than someone who is fighting us from within. We will soon meet and take a position on the next line of action.”

Saraki’s trial is expected to continue today at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), having failed to get a fresh reprieve from the Federal High Court in Abuja which ruled last Friday that the Senate President should face trial.

PDP Secretary, Prof Oladipo Admits Receipt of N75m From Dasuki, Begs Refund To Evade Trial

PDP Secretary, Prof Oladipo Admits Receipt of N75m From Dasuki, Begs Refund To Evade Trial

Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) National Secretary Prof. Wale Oladipo has appealed to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) to be allowed to refund the N75 million he received from ex-National Security Adviser (NSA) Mohammed Sambo Dasuki.

Oladipo’s request is contained in a letter to the Vice President in which he sought to be excluded from prosecution.

Prominent Nigerians, including Raymond Dokpesi and ex-Director of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Aminu Baba-Kusa, were charged to court for allegedly diverting billions of naira belonging to the Federal Government under the guise of fighting Boko Haram.

The existence of the letter by Oladipo was confirmed in the suit he filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, through his lawyer Babs Akinwumi.

He is seeking to, among others, restrain the attorney general of the federation (AGF) and four others from arresting, detaining and prosecuting him.

Oladipo also seeks to restrain the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), the inspector general of Police (IGP) and the Department of State Services (DSS) from holding him.

The PDP national secretary, in a supporting affidavit, said he wrote the Vice President on his intention to refund the money he received from the Office of the NSA, without knowledge that it was proceed of unlawful dealings, with the understanding that he would be shielded from prosecution.

Oladipo, who claimed to have received an anonymous message on his telephone, inviting him for interrogation, urged the court to, among others, restrain the respondents from moving against him.

He alleged that the respondents were being used by agents of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to harass, intimidate and persecute him, being a key opposition figure.

But the respondents faulted Oladipo’s letter, arguing that his letter could not shield him from investigation and prosecution.

“Assuming without conceding that Exhibit 1 (the letter) exists, it is our further contention that the exhibit cannot come to the aid of the applicant because a letter written to the Vice President to return N75 million cannot act as shield from investigation and possible prosecution, rather it is suggestive of corruption, requiring investigation,” ICPC said in its objection to the suit.

Other respondents faulted the suit and urged the court to dismiss it on the grounds that Oladipo was merely seeking to hide under a spurious text message, whose source he failed to establish, to prevent statutory established bodies from performing their responsibilities.

“It is clear that the applicant has failed to discharge his duty of establishing nexus between the 3rd respondent and the so called witch-hunt of APC against him.

“The applicant, in anticipation of possible invitation by the 3rd respondent (ICPC) to answer questions with respect to the N75 million, which, he said, he received from officials of the PDP, has come to this court to twist the arms of the law and challenged the statutory powers of the 3rd respondent in carrying out its constitutional duties and ultimately escape from criminal invitation.

“It is submitted that the applicant’s suit is incompetent, misleading, lacking in merit and should be dismissed. We urge the court to so hold and strike out or dismiss this suit,” ICPC said.

In his response to the suit, the AGF, Abubakar Malami (SAN), argued that Oladipo only raised unsubstantiated allegation of persecution and harassment against the respondents “on account of funds he received from his party members and is thus seeking to restrain the respondents from performing their constitutional duties”.

He denied taking any steps against Oladipo “in respect of money received by the applicant either from party members or other sources”.

“Even the alleged invitation by the 2nd respondent (EFCC) did not state that the applicant was invited because of funds, which he received.

“The applicant, on his free volition and admission, wrote to the Vice President wherein he offered to return to the Federal Government funds which he received.

“Rather than comply with the invitation, if indeed it exists, to clear his name, the applicant, via the instant suit, resorted to engage the instrumentality of the law to stop or frustrate his investigation and possible prosecution,” the AGF said.

The judge adjourned hearing to May 19 to enable ICPC file its responses.

Ekiti Rigging Saga: Aluko Makes More 11 Shocking Revelations, You'll Cry For Ekiti If These Are True
The unending scandalous rigging of 2014 Ekiti State Governorship election continued wednessday as a former  Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State, Dr. Tope Aluko revealed more statling revelations,

Speaking on Adaba 88.9 FM, Akure, on Wednesday, Aluko made the following shocking revelation on how the Ekiti election rigging was perfected in a hotel belonging to an unamed State Goverment official.

The Revelation made by Auko ar as follows:

  1. The Ekiti election rigging plan was hatched in a hotel 7 days to the main election.
  2. Sensitive materials such as ballot papers and result sheets were delivered to PDP chieftains by the Independent National Electoral Commission at the hotel.
  3. Aluko confessed that claimed that the Governor Ayodele Fayose’s administration had received the refund of the N5.2bn spent on the Ado-Ifaki federal highway by the administration of ex-governor Kayode Fayemi.

The state government has, however, continued to deny receiving the refund.
  4. Aluko claimed that the electoral materials were delivered through the Akure Airport.
  5. He claimed that INEC ballot papers were forged and result sheets filled by some PDP members, which gave the party an edge long before voters went to the polls.
  6. Aluko explained that the operatives of the Department of State Services led by a female officer stormed the hotel and arrested the PDP members perfecting the rigging but that they were released within three hours, following the intervention of the then President Goodluck Jonathan-led Federal Government.
  7. Aluko disclosed that a lorry conveying some of the electoral materials delivered through the Akure Airport was the one intercepted by soldiers led by the recently retired Brig.-Gen. Aliyu Momoh.
  8. According to Aluko, the materials were later released after the officers received an ‘order from above’
  9. Aluko alleged that the N5.2bn refund had been diverted to the Ado Ekiti flyover project, following an investigation conducted by the Department of State Services, the police and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Aluko said, “Ask him (Fayose) why did the former Commissioner for Works, Kayode Oso, run away? The Commissioner for Finance, Toyin Ojo, told his interrogators about the finances of the state, including the N5.2bn refunded on the Ado-Ifaki Road project carried out by Fayemi.

“You will recall that Fayose had earlier denied receiving the N5.2bn refund but the revelation by Ojo while in custody now made him (Fayose) to divert the money for a flyover construction because Ojo told them that Oso was in a better position to explain the refund collected on road.”
  10. Aluko said the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Owoseni Ajayi, was liable for his alleged role in an attack on the Ekiti State High Court – to prevent the delivery of a ruling on a perjury case involving Fayose.

Aluko said, “I pity Owoseni Ajayi who is saying that I should be prosecuted because he (Owoseni) was the one who placed a call to Fayose to organise a mob to disrupt the delivery of a ruling by Justice Olusegun Ogunyemi.

“Owoseni told Fayose on the phone that should the judge deliver the ruling on the perjury case, it would go against him (Fayose) and his planned inauguration would be in jeopardy.”
  11.  Aluko said he did not fall out with Fayose when he was not made the Chief of Staff, saying he fell out with the governor because he had derailed from delivering the dividends of democracy to the masses. He said, “Fayose told me that Ekiti people are easy to deceive because by the time you buy them ‘ponmo’ and ‘booli’, you have stolen their hearts’.
But the Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said Aluko should be disregarded.

“Is he an official of the Federal Ministry of Works? Is he an official of the Federal Government? Anybody making such an allegation should come with proof.”

Modern day African politicians are special species, plenty of them are funny lot, some are ignoramuses and some are incurable utopians, but one thing that appears to be general phenomenon is self-centredness.

Unlike in the early days of African independence struggle, where African leaders were ideologues, because they were passionate about the the well being of their people, in a situation where people like Sekeou Toure of Guinea would champion socialism for his country with the people at the centre of his manifestoes; Julius Nyerere would seek African socialism as an attitude in Tanzania; Kwame Nkrumah would demand intellectual activism and socialism for Ghana and African, and our own Obafemi Awolowo would canvass for Socialism with parliamentary democracy just to define how and who to govern, the modern day politicians are controlled by their ego centrism of negative value-me, myself and I.

I read in the newspapers an interview granted by one politician from Kwara state, Mr. Kawu Baraje, who happened to be the former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) now a chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) and one of the political boys of the embattled Senate President Bukola Saraki, where he predicted doom for his party, because the interest of his paymaster is being threatened by the anti-corruption drive of President Buhari as touching Saraki's trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal and I laughed out at his fallacies and old logic.

For those who have not read the interview, let me just point out three points out of Baraje gibberish and affirm his claim-that APC is floundering, because the President is being distracted by his aides; that the party and the President stand aloof in the trial of the embattled Senate President for corruption at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, making Saraki to be facing justice without influence; that the trial is designed to remove Saraki from Senate Presidency, because some party chiefs were not happy with the way he emerged as number three citizen cum chairman of the National Assembly. Therefore, APC would break like they did to the decimated PDP and new stronger party would emerge.

Those who are thinking with their anus go along with the possible worlds created by Baraje,  while any level headed person knows that the same tactics cannot be used to win election twice. I would have been convinced by the poor man's argument had it been that he detached emotion from his points, but his desperation is understood, and I would not fall into the error of argumentum ad hominem by attacking his personality.

I chose to write this piece, because I voted for President Buhari, not as an APC member, but because he was the only credible alternative to former President Goodluck Jonathan whose administration was hijacked by the wicked looters and unscrupulous politicians who succeeded in dragging the country backward for 50 years. So, I affirm my locus for speaking on the matter affecting his presidency.

In the first place, Baraje has forgotten that what attracted Nigerians to Buhari in his fourth attempt was his anti-corruption status, and his handlers deployed his sterling anti-graft posture as a campaign tool. More so, the people recognized that corruption was on its four when Jonathan was ruling, and that the nation was becoming pariah. So, for Baraje to think that the neutrality of President Buhari would spell doom for his party in the next election is false, because people are keenly following the trial, and they want to test the will of the President, and if he is seen interfering  with the trial, his anti corruption fight would be deflated and useless. So, Baraje's first and second premises are false.

Furthermore, Baraje failed to understand that Buhari did not win because a new PDP was formed and broke away from the old PDP, the President won, because the "talakawas" of the North and South West identified with the man because of his spartan lifestyle and his unblemished integrity despite the fact that he had served in all strategic positions the nation could offer including being Head of State. And for the fact that Professor Attahiru Jega, the man of history made the votes count(a feat that must be credited to Jonathan). Fact sheet had it that the last election would still have been won by Buhari without the help of any big PDP chief in the North, but the input of the south western elite was obvious anyway. So, for Baraje to claim that another party would emerge from APC like the then new PDP and shoot down Buhari suggests an inductive leap.

Now, what could make Buhari presidency to kiss the dust? It is certain that the President is concerned and is working round the clock to fix the mess this nation was put into, but the struggle of the old order with the new Sheriff has brought untold pain unto the masses. So, people are justifiably shouting under heavy pressure: economic topsy-turvy, epileptic power supply, paralysis of critical sectors, skyrocketing inflation, fuel scarcity, infrastructure decay and terrible hunger. Hence, Baraje thought this crisis brewed because the President chose not to save Saraki. What a fallacy!

If Buhari delivers on his campaign promises by deploying maximum force against the pipeline vandals and the gas flow freely to our turbines, and the power is fixed, jobs at formal and informal sectors would be created in millions, and people would be happy; if Buhari deploys funds to capital projects and turn the entire nation into a construction site, jobs would be created in thousands and there would be development along the affected corridors, and people would be happy.

Besides, if Buhari can fix the naira value just the way he sought out the currency deal with China, and use the yuan to fight dollar dominance in the country, and the commoners regain their purchasing power, and the machinery to develop agriculture is imported, and the new factory from textile to car assemblies spring up, jobs would be created in millions and the people would be happy; if Buhari can chase boko haram out the country and annihilate the terrorists, and make the country safe and secure just the way it is happening now in the North East, then there would be no vacancy in Aso Rock in 2019. Otherwise, his party will kiss the dust.

Meanwhile, Buhari seems to be reading Awolowo's mental magnitude that touches on discipline of mind on the part of leadership, because the President has made enough trips, and I have not seen him journey with his beautiful wife, suggesting that toiling for the nation matters to him than fun trip, where the wife would disembark from the Presidential aircraft before the President. Suffice to say that the world takes this President serious.

It is very difficult to have a man like Buhari, a Muslim Fulani who sticks with one wife, with no scandal or corruption profile, who had been the governor, Petroleum Minister, Chairman, Petroleum Trust Fund, Head of State without commensurate wealth. So, I pray he succeeds and there are indicators that he would succeed, and that this nation would be happier for it, because if he fails, Nigeria is doomed. Where are the honest people again? Dasukigate revealed the real identities of the so called leaders of the nation.

If Baraje likes, let him go back to his bag of tricks and unleash the known antics of breaking the APC, we are no longer bothered, because the difference between the PDP and the APC is located in the difference between the six and half of a dozen. All we want is for Buhari to deliver. After all, President Obama, the most successful President in United States came  on the slogan of 'change' and won his second term on the mantra of "forward" despite the fact that Republican (opposition) torpedoed his party, Democrats at the Congress. So, for Baraje to ascribe PDP's wining of rerun election in some southern states to what is coming is fallacious and illogical, and at best the reflection of a frustrated old horse.

Lest I forget, my gratitude to friends and family who sent their greetings for my birthday, I must say I felt the pleasure of the day through the prayer of my mother and  the inspirational acknowledgement of my wife, all the from the United States, messages from teachers, senior colleagues, colleagues, school mates, students who had passed through my tutelage, old and new friends. And it cut across the continents. I thank you all for identifying with yours sincerely.
